IMac locking up with 10.8.2 have to power cycle
Second total lockup of iMac in two days. I can still ssh into the machine from another computer on the network, but the GUI is totally locked up. I had a song playing on iTunes, it was still going, but couldn't change volume or mute it from keyboard. So appears user interface totally locks up. Mouse moves around, but can't click on anything.
Computer hasn't done this before, wondering if recent OS update is causing issues?
Should I revert to the way the machine was last week? Is this possible? I have time machine backups.
Google or the search funtion here can also be really helpful...

EDIT: Sure you haven't had more running, also in the background, also loaded per Login Items list? Hmmmmm...

IMac locks up with Mountain Lion with 10.8.1
My iMac is locking up with the SPOD since upgrading to Mountain Lion. So far the only fix I have found is to power off, unplug, wait, and plug in and power up, like a PC. Any ideas out there for how to fix? So far there are no updates other than 10.8.1 and this didn't help. Before upgrading this was not an issue. I find this happens when using Aperture 3 which is what we do most of the time. Any suggestions appreciated.
How much RAM does your iMac have installed?
Have you tried starting in Safe Mode and see if the problem still occurs?

LaserJet P2015d seems to lose connection with computer; I have to power cycle the printer
I purchased the LaserJet P2015D in March 2008 and have been pleased with it. However in the last several weeks it seems that my computer "loses" it, like it is not connected. I issue the print commance from my computer, I see the document in the printer cache, but it never goes to the printer. I can fix this by power cycling the printer, i.e., unplugging it and plugging it back in. After this, the cached document gets released and printed. This works most of the time. Sometimes I have to delete the cached document and re-issue the print command. My computer will see the printer for an hour or two and then I have to apply the fix again. And then in the last couple of days the toner warning light has come on constantly, and I'm pretty sure the toner cartridge is not empty. The print quality remains good.
I suspect a hardware problem, like a component (capacitor?) has failed. Are spare parts available and how can I buy them? Can anyone recommend specifically what parts might be needed?question answered on a different part of the boards

X1 Any-room DVR, 3 nights have to Power cycle all 3 DVR boxes to see Recordings
On 7/2 I went to watch a DVR show in my bedroom, which is not my Primary DVR box. The recording was playing like a slideshow, skipping and moving at 1/100th of it's normal play speed. So I went into the living room to the primary DVR and checked the recordings from the Saved Programs menu and it told me that no recordings were available and Comcast was working to fix this problem. I then called Comcast customer service and a man sent a refresh signal for me, and it reset the primary DVR box, and then the recordings came back on the primary box. I went to check the secondary box in the bedroom where I had the original problem, and that box still was not showing any recording, it didn't have the same error, it just said that no recordings were available and to check if all my DVR boxes were plugged in. I asked the guy on the phone and he told me that I should unplug that one and plug it back in and that it should then work. I asked if he should wait on the phone in case it didn't and he said no, and that if it didn't, if I just waited another half hour it would be back. I hastily agreed and hung up.Well, they never came back that night. And I checked for another 2 hours. On the morning of 7/3, it still wasn't back, so I decided I would power cycle all of the boxes at the same time. I unplugged all 3, waited a minute. Then I plugged in the primary one, waited for that to come all the way on, waited 5 minutes after the primary box was all the way on and then proceeded to plug in the 2 other DVR boxes. Then I waited 5 minutes until after they were back live on TV to check the DVR menu (the original guy on the phone insisted that I should wait at least 3 minutes after the DVR box was turned all the way back onto live tv before opening the Saved Recordings menu). This seemed to work, the recordings came back and it worked fine for a little while during the day that day. Later that night I went to sleep really late after 12am. I went to play a DVR show in bed and it said again that my recordings were unavailable and to check all the DVR boxes. AGAIN!? YES. So I did the same thing again, I unplugged all 3, plugged in primary box, waited for it to go to live tv, waited 5 mins, plugged in the other 2, waited for them to go to live tv, waited 5 mins, then checked the saved list and it came back. Then it worked for the rest of that night.The next day on 7/4, I was out all day so I didn't really get a chance to watch until later on that afternoon, I can't remember if I watched anything DVR'd. But that night I went to bed and guess what!? The recordings were gone again. I did the same thing again. It worked for the night.Today, on 7/5, watched a couple shows on the DVR during the day, was still working. Went to bed at 9:30 pm... RECORDINGS ARE GONE AGAIN! SOOOOO I spend another 20 or more minutes power cycling and waiting and stuff, it works, I start to watch a show, 20 minutes in, it freezes, like it did the first night. I try to restart the recording several times. Still frozen. I try resetting just the bedroom box through the power settings menu on the DVR. When it comes back on, NO RECORDINGS AGAIN! TWICE IN ONE NIGHT. I am completely fed up at this point. I know if I call that you are just going to tell me to power cycle it or send a refresh signal again, and it's going to take another hour--and then it is just going to stop working again by tomorrow night!!! I am losing sleep over this at this point, literally. What is going to be done about this beyond power cycling and refresh signaling??? I refuse to spend any more time on the phone anymore at night when this happens, it wakes up my boyfriend who has work earlier than me.

This could explain the clipping, and the LOST recordings.... You did do the right steps to getting your Any-Room DVR working, but if those recordings are in the cloud and the cloud had issues, you wouldn't have seen them.... -=Ray=- -

I have no movies on my computer at all, and I do not know what files are considered "movies" . I was also wondering how to get rid of the files to clear up the space.

But it looks like the Spotlight index is damaged or not up-to-date. Drag your internal HD from a Finder window into the exclusion box in System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy for a few moments, then remove it via the minus sign at the bottom.
That will trigger a compete re-indexing, which may take a while and won't be done when the Spotlight indication no longer shows it, so do something else for a while. If that doesn't fix it, post back and we'll try another finagle. -
WRVS4400N stops working, I have to power cycle to get it to work again
I own two of these Routers. One is at my business and the other one is at my home. I bought them with the intention of using VPN Tunnel. Initially I had nothing but problems with them. Over time and hundreds of hours later and through a select few of individuals, the problem was finally resolved. I could finally get the VPN tunnel to work. Of course they had to write a special BETA Firmware just for me, since apparently no one else that purchased these routers had actually setup or tried the VPN tunnel.
I just recently updated my Firmware to Firmware Version: V1.1.13. I've had the Firmware in place for about 1 1/2 to 2 months now as far as I can recall. Up until last week one of my routers will just work great for about 10-12 hours and then it just stops working. No access to router whatsoever. No Traffic, all lights on but no one home. The ports are getting quite HOT to the touch. I don't understand what is going on. Is my Router going out on me??? What should I do??Its never a good sign when something is getting hot to the touch. This could be a sign that there is a hardware issue with your device. I recommend calling Cisco Small Business Support Center and let us troubleshoot this for you if the product is still in warranty.

Suggestions?I did some more digging, it appears to be a backlight problem only. I can see the screen very dimly if I use a bright flashlight in a very dark room. It also seems to run ok if the brightness is turned down a LOT.
So I'm thinking this is a LED driver board issue or the display itself. I'll open it up and check the connection between the two and see if I can get any more clues. At least I can use it somewhat now by dimming the display significantly... -

This was supposed to be my dream computer, but it has turned into a nightmare! It locks up constantly. Usually the mouse pointer will disappear and the computer will just freeze up. This normally seems to occur after the computer has been idle for a while. I have read that there might be compatibility issues with the MSI P67A-GD65 and the GTX 570 video cards. Can anyone confirm this? Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this? The only thing event viewer is showing is the unexpected shutdown when I have to power cycle it. That can happen, & it can really mess things up if two kits are attempted to be run together. The platform is DDR3 1333 as to native support by the CPU IMC. If the system can't run on 1333 RAM speed at CR 1, 9 9 9 24 @ 1.50v's, then something is wrong. No system should ever have to use an OC (or X.M.P.) as a workaround to make it work. That's why I recommended the Crucial 1333. Plug one stick in the blue primary dimm slot to get everything loaded & checked out, & go from there.
Exactly which SATA ports are you using for the HDD's & RAID? White Marvell or Intel SATA III, or the black SATA II?
Unfortunately, my local shop didn't have the Crucial, so I grabbed the Corsair instead. The Velociraptors are running from SATA 1 and 2 (the top white connectors). I also have 2X HITACHI Deskstar 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s running in RAID0 from SATA 3 and 4 for storage (this computer is intended for HD video editing, compositing in After Effects, etc.). My intel iMac locks up with no warning. Hardware test reveals no problems. Any ideas?
Can you provide more of a description for "locks up with no warning." What happens exactly? Go to Console in Utilities>Files>system.log. Do you see any messages from around the time of these freezes? Look through the various files in Diagnostic and Usage Info for anything that might be related.
Disconnect any USB devices beside the mouse and keyboard and see if the freezes stop.
Create a new admin user account and test for this behavior there.
Do these stop while in Safe Boot? Hold the Shift key down at the startup chime? Give it much longer to boot; this is normal. It is running a bare bones system. -
I am feeling so ripped off right now. I have wanted a Mac for years and believed the hype about it's stability and I have had more trouble with this Imac 2011 than I have ever had with a pc. It locks up with several software products from APP store. I have already had to have a technician to look at it and really couldn't figure out what the deal was. I was told that the APP store software should give me no problems but the truth is that it locks up on the software. This machine is only 4 weeks old and I am using 37 g on a 1 T hard drive. There is no reason for it to be locking up. Also, when I try to use the help program, it always tells me that I am not connected to the internet even though I have used both the mail program and the browser with no problem just before that. I successfully used the help program on my pc lots of times. I did not need a $2000. plus machine to just get email. I just wanted to unload on somebody that might understand my pain and after checking out this site...I think there is a few of you out there.
I was told that the APP store software should give me no problems but the truth is that it locks up on the software.
The apps downloaded from the Mac App Store are written by third party developers, not Apple. If you have problems with those apps you need to visit the support area for their websites. Launch the App Store, locate the app name. You should see a support link.

Go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.helpviewer.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash. Restart your Mac, try the Help menu.
If you need help finding that file, hold down the Finder icon in the Dock then click: New Finder Window. From the menu bar top of your screen click: Go > Go to Folder. Type this in exactly as you see it here: ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpviewer.plist That will take you right to that file.
(.plist) files stores information about a particular app or in this case, the Help viewer. Often times deleting the .plist file resolves the issue.
It's fine to "unload"... we understand that you expect your iMac to be stable but there are times when things go awry. That's why we have these forums so that you can you get help.

We have an iMac 24-inch Mid 2007 with maximum of 4G bytes of SDRAM, with OX X 10.9.4 Mavericks. It is routinely locking-up with the rainbow wheel. Especially with iTunes and Safari.
I'm wondering it it that Mavericks simply uses more RA that the machine allows when also running application, but I don't see the RAM is being maxed out per se' when in Activity Monitor either. I've also ran the Disk Utility and have run scans wit Sophos, looking for malware, but have found no issues.
Any ideas? Any better Malware/Spyware applications?

My iMac locks up constantly in email. I click on one or two emails. Then when I click on another email, I get the spinning wheel and have to relaunch. Why does it get confused and lock up? Seems like it is stuck.
10.6.8 here, MacBook Pro. Comcast. Mail freeze ups. Occasional warnings to use "Log Out" under the Apple icon.
Disk Repair run several times. Shows lots of Java "remote" issues.

Restart don't know if it helps, I do it all the time. What's with quitting Mail but it doesn't quit, and why a separate maneuver to "Log Out".

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for your password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator rights.
The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. There wiil be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress until it's done. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." That's because the forum software falsely identifies something in the post as a violation of the terms of use. If that happens, please post the results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Does my desktop come with wireless capability with no need for a separate router needed to be purchased, when airport is opened up belkin wireless is checked and other locations are listed but locked? Does my xfinity unit have one or just a modem? TIA
Your iMac does have wireless capability. It does need, however, some wireless network in order to connect to the Internet. It sounds like there are several networks in your area, including one Belkin router that is not encrypted and several other networks that are. I presume that you would know if the Belkin one is yours, and you would have mentioned it. Do not use someone else's network without their permission. In some jurisdictions it is illegal, in others it is merely foolish.
It is impossible to know what Xfinity has given you. Possibly it is only a cable modem, or perhaps it has a router built in. Call them and ask them. If it has a router built in, get them to help you set it up. Note that some tech support people for Internet service providers will resist working with Macs. Be persistent, it is not that different.
If they did not provide a router, you will need to get one. Apple makes the AirPort Extreme base station, the AirPort Express base station and the Time Capsule. Other companies have their own. Be sure you get one that is up to date and has 802.11n capabilities (for the highest speed) and go on from there.
