Imac mid 2011 os10.7.5 can't access hardware test.  could months ago, now no.

using alt+D can get (wifi only) connection to page with world map in circle, below "connecting internet recovery" and statement the "this may take a while".
Gives no option for ethernet , showing only wifi accounts even when wifi is turned off on compu.
After waiting quite a while an exclamation point covers circle with world and below says:  apple.com/support -2002d - going there find nothing applicable to case.
I was able to access with no problem several times up til last couple of months.  Can any one please advise how to access hardware test?????
Many thanks.

You will need to buy it at the app store. The license for the pre-installed OS on your new machine is only for that machine. Only OS's purchased from the app store can be installed on more than one machine (as long as you own it).

If it was previously working then try a smc and pram reset.
If that doesn't fix it then see if vlc can handle the video.

  • Why doesn't the new ram memory for iMac (mid 2011) work (different brand)?

    Hello,
I have an Macbook pro at home (early 2011) and an iMac (mid 2011).
My macbook pro had 2 x 2GB ram and I wanted it to be higher, zo I bought 2 x 4GB ram from Kingston. I installed it succesfully in the macbook pro.
I saw that the ram in my macbook and iMac where the same type (1333MHz DDR3), so I figured the Ram-modules were interchangable. The iMac has 2 x 4GB ram put in by Apple itself. It's a weird brand name, something Asian that I hadn't heard off.
I thought I could put the original ones from my macbook pro (brand Samsung) in with the original ones that where already in the iMac.
So the slots would look like:
4GB          4GB -> already in iMac, original modules with brand name I can't remember ;-).
2GB          2GB -> original modules from macbook pro Samsung
I also put in in like shown: the same types next to eachother.
Then I turned my iMac on and it only "beeped".
So I tried to put it in different combinations (4GB next to 2GB etc etc). But it still "beeped".
Very frustrating... because I thought I was doing a good thing by buying Kingston (quite expensive also...).
Now I think I had better purchased new 2 x 4GB Samsung and combined that with the 2 x 2GB Samsung from the macbook and put it all in the iMac. And take those of the iMac (2 x 4GB Asian brand) and put those in the macbook... This way it were all the same brands combined...
But I did by Kingston... so... why can't I combine the original iMac ram modules with the Samung modules from the macbook????? I've read that in older iMac models, the slots are sensitive for different brands, but couldn't find out for sure for my iMac (mid 2011). It's a bit stupid, no... Both mac's are from 2011 and have the same specifications...
Could anyone give me an answer?
A little bit mad at Mac right now ;-).
    Thanks in advance!
    Wallking.
PS: if it is about the OSX I'm using... can't update to Maverick for software licence reasons... I need the iMac for work a lot...

    Hello,
I'm sorry if it wasn't clear... but I don't have ram issues with the Kingston type...
I used the new Kinsgtons in my macbook and wanted to take the originals from the macbook (Samsung) and them put in my iMac next to the other modules that were already in the iMac.
    I know it's a bit confusing... ;-)
So... I have 2 x 4gb in my iMac from a brand I can't remember the name off... And I also wanted to put in 2 x 2 GB Samsung modules. So that would count up to 12 GB ram. Why? Because I took the Samsung modules out of my macbook and I thought I could reuse them in my iMac since they have the same specifications (1333MHz DDR3). But My iMac won't start up as soon as I insert those 2 Samsung modules.

  • Win 8 pro to win 8.1 pro on Imac mid 2011

    Hi Community!
I'm experiencing the same issue as this thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/23429321#23429321
But it's on my Imac mid 2011.
I had windows 7, I upgraded with a windows 8 succesfully but when I want to update to 8.1 I have a black screen at the end of the installation (no lights) exactly like the computer is Off. When I reboot it restore to win 8
So I decided to restore windows 8 with a fresh install (all programs and files deleted) and bootcamp 5 installed before.
I have the same issue , I thought the problem was because of one of my drivers.
But even with a brand new Win8, with last update, The update 8.1 give me this **** black screen!!!
I tried with last AMD HD drivers in case it was the graphic drivers.
I really don't understand what happen!!
I have two sort of error code when It restore to win 8
    0x1900101 - 40019    or  0x1900101 - 4000D
Does anyone have a successful update to win 8.1 with an Imac mid 2011?
I try to install with a complete win 8.1 DVD (no update) I will work?
    thanks for your help

Well, I have finally figured "my" issue out.  For me, it was the video driver for my 6970M adapter.  The real kicker is that the driver provided by Microsoft during the windows installation which correctly identified my device was NOT compatible with 8.1  The driver provided by Bootcamp driver installation was NOT compatibile either.
Basically, you have to uninstall the display adapter and have "delete the driver" box checked in device manager.  Leave it like that, do NOT reboot and install 8.1  The incompatible driver will put itself back on there again but, at least you'll be able to get into 8.1.  You just have to uninstall that device again and go to AMD directly for the latest driver.
So, below is a more step by step of how I got my 8.1 passed the black screen issue.
I did a clean install of Windows 8.
During the installation process, select customize settings and turn OFF automatic windows updates AND turn OFF automatic driver updates.
Once at the desktop, uninstall the device AND device driver (display adapter).  Do NOT reboot.
At this point I had to do windows updates to get 8.1 to show up in the windows store.  However, if you have to do this, UNCHECK any driver related updates first.  It will tell you to reboot, go ahead and do this.  Once back at the desktop, go into device manager and make sure the display adapter is uninstalled/driver deleted or its at least the microsoft generic adapter.  The point is to make sure no device specific adapter is installed.
Proceed to install 8.1.  Let it go through its reboots and setup.
Once at the desktop of 8.1, go into device manager and see if the generic driver is there of it its a device specific driver, uninstall the device/driver, do not reboot.
Go to AMD (my display adapter maker) and get the latest drivers from them directly and make sure its for 8.1
Install that driver and reboot.  It should work from there on out.  You can then proceed to install other devices and bootcamp drivers.
This is what I had to do for my black screen problem.  Its important to note that the black screen issue is common but being caused by a variety of issues.  I was on the phone with Microsoft this morning and explained all of this and my steps that were taken.  Its clear MS has a bad update package especially since 8.1 isn't playing well (causing black screen) with drivers that Windows itself installed during install.  My fix may work for some, but not all.  I hope it helps someone.

Another update to my burning problem...in my movies folder there is an img file (states it is a classic disk image-2.82GB) after I have tried burning a DVD unsuccessfully and when I open the img file I see 1) AUDIO_TS AND 2) VIDEO_TS files. I 'control' clicked the file and tried burning this folder onto a disc. Result it seemed to burn both files onto DVD but still couldn't view video.

  • Continuity and iMac mid 2011

Hi everybody: can anyone confirm that Continuity features are definitely NOT working on iMac mid 2011 (my Mac) ? thank you in advance

    Hi,
the Continuity features don't work definetly on iMac mid 2011, unfortunately. Only iPhone-Calls can be answered. I tried it out. If you don't see the handoff button in <system preferences - general> (the handoff option button must be visible below the <used objekts> and above the <LCD> option buttons), you don't have the feature on your machine. And it won't be.
    Sorry.

  • Overheating Troubleshooting for 21.5 iMac (mid 2011)?

I have been having issues lately with my 21.5" iMac (mid 2011).  It was purchased in June 2011 and is currently running the latest version of OS X.
This issue I am having is that once the computer has been is use for a few minutes (usually around 5-10...depending on usage type), the computer will freeze up and make clicking noises and is very warm to the touch.  Specifically, I will be unable to do anything and the cursor will pinwheel.  I can usually move the cursor around, but cannot click anything.  During the "freeze", there are clicking noises.  The clicking is in groups of twos....like Click...Click.....pause for a few seconds, Click.....Click, etc....  The noise sounds like it is coming from around the center bottom of the computer...maybe near or around where the base connects.  It sounds like it may be a drive starting and stopping, or a fan stopping and starting....I don't know?....it's a mechanical type clicking it seems.   It will freeze for extended periods of time (minutes) then you can usually do something else, but it will just happen again.  Sometimes, you have to shut the computer down and when you do it takes forever to boot back up.
Any ideas on what may be causing this or what I can do to troubleshoot the cause?  I'm too far away from an Apple Store to just casually take it in to have it looked at.
    Thanks.

It sounds very likely that the hard drive will require replacement. If you're not comfortable doing the removal and replacement, you'll just have to take it to an Apple authorized service provider to have the drive replaced.
As noted in the tutorial link Old Toad provided, OEM Apple hard drives for the iMac have an internal temperature sensor that is not present in non-OEM Apple models. If you use a non-OEM Apple drive, with the original Apple cable, it's very likely the fans will run at high speed 6000 rpm once the system warms up after power-on.
Replacing a mid-2011 iMac hard drive even WITH a proper sensor cable still requires a few tools and some significant disassembly, including the removal and temporary storage of the LED screen in a relatively dust-free environment, and disconnecting a number of cables in order to replace the drive before subsequent re-assembly.
Other World Computing (www.macsales.com) offers (both hard drives and) a hard drive cable with a thermal sensor that mimics the function of the sensor present in the OEM Apple hard drives. OWC updated both the cable and their original YouTube video for mid-2011 iMac 21.5" hard drive replacement in March 2014: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLuk_8w7KwU
The OWC replacement cable allows you to select most any 3.5" hard drive and still have proper 'factory' fan operation, so the fans aren't racing at full speed all the time.
The full OWC toolkit complete with sensor cable is here: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DIYIMACHDD11/
The OWC sensor cable only is here: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DIDIMACHDD11/
Then you still need to select and purchase a 3.5" internal hard drive.
I've used OWC for a number of upgrades to the three Macs in our family: mid-2007 MacBook, mid-2009 Unibody MacBook Pro, and mid-2011 iMac. I'm planning to do a hard-drive upgrade to my mid-2011 iMac using the OWC cable, once the AppleCare warranty expires.

  • Why my Apple Wireless Keyboard (2007) wont pair with my Imac mid 2011 (MacOS 10.7.4)?

Hi there and thanks in advance for the support.
Now we have an apple wireless keyboard 2007 and an Imac mid 2011 with Mac OS X 10.7.4 that won't connect. We had the keyboard the IMac brought but now it's lost and we need to get our old wireless keyboard to work with it.
It's discoverable (we know this because it blinks and appears on the devices list on the BT setup assistant) but it wont pair or even give us the "enter the passcode" to try. We tried the "do not use a passcode with this device" and then the following comes out "the pairing attempt was unsuccessful. This configuration of Mac OS X and Bluetooth software could be invalid or unsupported."
What can we do? It sounds like you guys in apple development didn't create this connecting option. Is it true?
Buying a new one is no option nor for our pockets neither our moral. Please let us know about solutions.
    Gracias

Might be corrupted Bluetooth preferences ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy and paste the following:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.Bluetooth.plist file to the Trash
Make sure the keyboard has fresh batteries then try pairing the keyboard.
If that didn't help, update your Mac's software to v10.7.5. Open System Preferences > Software Update > Check Now
Restart your Mac after the updates are installed, then try pairing again.

  • No internal or external sound from speakers on iMac (mid 2011)

After plugging in external speakers that failed, my iMac (mid 2011) will not output any sound through internal or external speakers. I am currently in a country with no authorized Apple service centers. Any ideas about what I can do to test and diagnose?
I have checked all the usual places for sound being on mute as well as in Systems Prefrences\Sound. Thanks in advance for any input/ideas. It may be a while before I can get it serviced by a professional, if need be.

Open Audio MIDI Setup and select the Audio Devices window. Select Built-In Output from the list on the left.
Make sure the format is 44100 HZ and 2ch 24bit if the settings are not that set them that way and try your audio.
Also in your frst post you menttioned speakers that failed. How did they fail? Were they pluged in when they failed?

  • How do I get my iPhoto library from a ppc g5 to an intel iMac mid 2011

How do I get my Iphoto library from a ppc g5 to an intel imac mid 2011?

I recommend tha tyou do not use migration assistant - it has a poor record of moving the iPhoto library successfully
Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formed Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • HT1338 Software Update is not finding latest release (April 3) of Java 2012 001 Update for Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 on iMac mid-2007 that downloaded automatically on iMac mid-2011

Software Update is not finding latest release (April 3) of Java 2012 001 Update on my iMac mid-2007, but it downloaded it automatically on my iMac mid-2011 yesterday. Both are running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3. When I try to download the update manually from Apple on my older iMac, it downloads okay, but when I try to open the dmg file, I get a warning message saying that opening this update may make your computer LESS secure. Do you want to proceed? (I did not).
Why would Software Update find this update and install it automatically on one iMac and not the other, if they are both running the same version of Mac OS X Lion? I checked the installed software list on my old iMac and the Java update does not appear there. Why would this update make my old iMac less secure?

Recall that Java is not installed as part of Lion.
You have to install it (and are asked if you want to) when you first try to run some java stuff.
Is it possible that the iMac 2007 does not have Java yet?
Try this: open Terminal (from Utilities) and type java -version (exactly like that, with the space before the hyphen).
    What do you get?
Consistent with this theory is that the dmg thing gave you the warning - installing java might make your machine less secure because java is a means for bad guys to try to do bad things to your computer.

Thank you for the reminder! I have been in the habit of vacuuming but have become lazy of late. This has been a particular issue as the cat spends much of his life under the reading light next the iMac. In fact, I have got so used to the cat being here, that I'd the vacuuming routine.
