IMac screen locks-up

I have a 27 inch iMac Mid 2010 (iMac 11,3) 16GB RAM (Kingston, installed after purchase) currently running OS X 10.7.4. Came with OS X 10.6. Apple Care until Dec 29, 2013.
Since the beginning I have experienced the screen freezing, but still able to move the mouse/cursor.
Originally the problem occurred once every three to four weeks. I phoned Apple Care a couple of times in the first three months, but because it was so infrequent, and I couldn't note anything specific prior to the freezing occurring, I got nowhere with a solution from Apple. I did decide to take out the 3 year Apple Care extended warranty.
As time has gone on, the freeze-ups have become more frequent. Can't recall specifically if it got more frequent after installing Lion.
The problem is much worse if the computer is cold, ie. if I turn it off. When cold, I basically have to let it freeze up and then let it sit until it gets hot. The switch off and start it again.
Sometimes I get weird graphics effects on start-up when I have the problem, such as a pattern of tiny blue squares about 1/8" square in horizontal line across the screen. Sometimes the dock will be scrambled graphics, seeing parts of the icons all on top of each other across the dock area. This is what happend one time just before it froze. This is also how the dock will appear once in a while.
If iTunes is playing music or a radio station when the problem occurs, it continues playing fine.
I can still print a document from my MacBook through the iMac with the screen frozen.
Today I was on Skype having a conversation and suddenly realized the screen was frozen. We were able to carry on talking to each other.
I can access files on the iMac or attached external USB drive using my MacBook.
I have never had the problem while running in 'Safe Mode'.
I have tried the following resolutions:
• Reset the PRAM when restarting the computer. Seems to extend MTBF. If I don't do a PRAM reset the problem will sometimes recur immediately.
• I have done an SMC (System Managements Controller) reset with no noticeable results.
• I installed and  ran smcFan Control and upped the fan speeds. No difference.
• I have emptied all cache files (as directed by an Apple Care rep) and deleted all start-up programs. No change.
• I set up another User to see if problem occurred with the test user. No difference.
• I have run 'Verify Disk' and 'Repair Disk' as well as 'Verify Disk Permissions and 'Repair Disk Permissions' more times than I can remember, including with an Apple Care rep on the phone.
• I took the iMac to the Apple Store Genius Bar and they plugged in a drive and ran a hardware test (not the AHT, something else) which showed the RAM was faulty. It just showed a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark beside 'Memory'. Everything else tested fine. I asked the 'Genius' if it could determine if it was a particular bank of RAM. He said he didn't think so, but clicked on the yellow icon which opened to illustrate the four banks of RAM all shaded yellow.
• I came home and pulled the RAM and reinstalled the 2 x 2GB original Samsung RAM. Out of curiosity, I took Disk 2 which came with the computer and ran the AHT and it showed the RAM fine. Then I pulled the Samsung RAM and reinstalled 1 x 4GB bank of Kingston RAM and ran the AHT. It said the RAM was fine. I ran the AHT for each 4GB bank of RAM in both slot '0' and slot '1'. Took me several hours. All AHT test results said the RAM was fine.
• I then reinstalled the 2 x 2GB original Samsung RAM and went to work. The desktop froze within about 10 minutes. I reset the PRAM and it lasted a couple of hours. Then about a day.
Apple Care says wipe the drive and reinstall OS X. I'm somehow not convinced, but will probably be my next step. I hate wasting hours reinstalling everything. I will make a clone backup, and if nothing changes after reinstalling OS, I'll wipe the drive again and copy the clone back over.
Any other suggestions? Have I missed trying something, before I wipe the drive?

open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem for clues.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • HELP!!! new iMac. screen shifts side to side and i can't use mouse when this happens.

i bought this imac back in january and have had nothing but problems since then with it. first my OS (lion 10.7.4) crashed or some **** where i got extremely slow and would give me the colored wheel of death so i take it to worst but where i bought it and they say its a corupt hard drive so its sent out. get it back, they say it whats the os system so they re-boot the os on to it. mean while i was having the same problem ive have from the beginning which was the screen would shake side to side when ever i would be doing something and the mouse locks up and i would have to wait for it to stop. this is VERY ANOYING!!! i took it to apple and they ran a series of stress tests on it and they couldnt even get it to produce it once while they had it. so now its STILL doing it!  can anyone please help me. im ready to go to apple and demand a new computer or punch someone in the face...

    I'm speaking from experience.
You're using a wireless Magic Mouse right?  Yeah, thought so.
I first noticed the problem on Lion (10.7.5) but that was also the time my Mighty Mouse or whatever that thing was called crapped out and I upgraded to the Magic Mouse.  I always thought the problem was with the OS.  My system is not supported by Mountain Lion (late 2006 model, the white one) so I did a system reinstall and stil had the issue.  Being stupid, I still attributed it to the OS but had my doubts about the mouse with all the silly swipes here and there and everywhere.  Until today.  I said enough of this garbage and switched off the mouse and plugged in a beat up wired Logitech.  Going on 4 hours now and not one screen shake.
The "iMac screen shake".  Not very well documented.  But **** if that isn't one frustrating mofo.  Seriously, how did I use this thing for many moons with the screen shaking every 3-5 minutes.  ***??   And by the way, to stop the screen from shaking while it's doing it, madly swipe back and forth on the magic mouse shell to take control back.  Man, I'm getting upset just thinking about this problem.  And the waste of $70 for the mouse.
And for what it's worth, I bought an iMac (2010) for my folks and I've noticed the problem on their machine too.  Yep, Magic Mouse.

  • Screen Locking During Screen Share Access

When I access my iMac from another Mac using Screen Sharing my iMac system is then open for anyone walking by to access.  Is there any way to use Screen Sharing for access and keeping the physical screen on the system being accessed locked?  I know there are ways to do this using a third-party VNC, but that requres using a non-standard port for access.  Is there some working-around for Screen Sharing, or perhaps some way to change the port that Screen Sharing is using (and if so, does this work?)???
    Jim

I don't understand what you're asking here... about the screen locking during a call "over the time" set.
    Could you please explain?

  • IMac Crashes/Locks Up - Sonos?  TimeMachine?

Hi folks. My iMac keeps locking up. I am using my desktop as a Sonos Controller for my iTunes library, which requires that the computer never goes to sleep. The display can go dark. This has been running since Christmas with no problems but in the last month or so, I have had problems with the machine not working once I trigger the display. Sometimes, I get the spinning disk, sometimes everything seems fine but nothing works (can't launch an application, can't shut down, nothing). Sometimes, if Sonos is playing music, it will stop playing after a while (never the same amount of time).
I've disconnected all USB devices (save for a 3.5" hard drive acting as the Time Machine backup), reset the SMC, PRAM, VNRAM, verified and repaired disk permissions and run Disk Utility when booting from my Installation CD.
I'm not sure it matters but I don't get the gray screen (typical kernel panic). And I also try and leave no applications open (save for the Sonos Desktop Controller) when I let the display dim/go black. I did install a shareware screensaver, which I thought was the problem. I deleted the screensaver but am worried there are other files related to that program I can't find. Could that be causing the problem?

ok i have a macbook 4,1 here that exhibits pretty much exact same behavior. coming out of screensaver kills the machine with a black screen kernel panic. here's the report. so far exactly 2 kernel panics, June 10 and June 15, these are the only panics encountered during ownership of 6 months.
smells strongly 10.5.7 specific, googling "AppleAHCI newFIS" gives 6 (six) hits..

  • Screen Lock and MS Messenger

Using Automator, I can create a screen lock script:
    cat
    '/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/User.menu/Contents/Resources/CGSession' -suspend
But how can I get it to change my MS Messenger status to "Away" before it locks? I tried recording mouse clicks but get an error.

Same here, I just had that today exept that it was only the sound not the locking!
I turned the service off incase it remotly wipes my iMac!

  • Log in screen appear after Mac goes to sleep even if screen lock is turned off.

Log in screen appear after Mac goes to sleep even if screen lock is turned off. This happens usually but not always. Using Yosemite, 2 year old iMac. This has only started to occur recently and it happened in Mavericks also.

    Howdy stkh,
You may want to check the General pane of the Security & Privacy System preferences to make sure that the Require password...after sleep or screen saver begins is not checked. See this article for reference -
OS X Yosemite: General pane of Security & Privacy preferences
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • My ipad recognizes my home network but will not connect to the internet. When I click on AirPort/preferences at the top of the imac screen it says..."AirPort has a self-assigned ip address and may not connect to the internet".How can I change ip address?

My ipad recognizes my home network but will not connect to the internet. When I click on AirPort/preferences at the top of the imac screen it says..."AirPort has a self-assigned ip address and may not connect to the internet". If this is the root of the problem, how can I change ip address?
Ipad will connect no problem to other networks.

First thing you need I think is to get your iMac connected to the Internet.
Shut down your iMac and you iPad. Then power off your router. Wait 30 seconds and power up the router.
After the router indicates that it is connected to the Internet then start up your iMac and see if it connects. If the iMac connects to the Internet then your iPad should too.
If this power up sequence doesn't work you'll have to dig into the router setup to make sure it is working properly.

  • How do i connect my iMac Screen to Apple TV?

I have read i can connect my iMac Screen to my Apple TV via Airplay.
    How do i do that?
    I have Mac OS X Version 10.7.4
I have the OS X Lion ready to download and install, but can't back up my computer (no where to back it up to :/)

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    OSX 10.7.4 is Lion
Lion doesn't support AirPlay of the Macs screen to the Apple TV.

  • When my iPhone 4S (with ios7) experiences a failed call while connected to my Bluetooth hands free in my car(screen locked) the failed call appears on the locked screen, as it should, then when I unlock the phone it automatically redials the failed call,

When my iPhone 4S (with ios7) experiences a failed call while connected to my Bluetooth hands free in my car(screen locked) the failed call appears on the locked screen, as it should, the problem arises whenever I unlock the phone, it automatically redials the last failed call, it doesn't do this with missed calls that are on the locked screen, if any. It is really annoying as sometimes the phone doesn't respond to attempts to end the call before it connects to the number. I then have to explain that it was my phone and not me, I look like an idiot, which I don't really need any extra help with!! Does anyone have any ideas? I don't want to stop missed call from showing in the locked screen but it might be associated with the failed calls and therefore be the only resolution

I have had the same issue which was driving me mad but think I have just found a way around it. In iOS 7 if you swipe up on the lock screen to access quick settings and go into timer then click the home button you get into the phone without calling the person back. Not a great 'fix' but hope it works for you. Come on Apple this isn't good enough, fix this bug otherwise you will lose your customers.

  • I have a Thunderbolt iMac 27" with a Thunderbolt Display attached.  I would like to use the iMac and Thunderbolt display in Target Display Mode for my new Thunderbolt MacBook Pro.  So far, it seems I can only use the iMac screen itself.  How do I do this?

When I press the Command + F2, the iMac screen becomes a secondary for the MacBook Pro, and the Thunderbolt Display becomes the primary screen for the iMac.  I was hoping that both screens would become secondaries for the MacBook Pro.  Does anyone know how I should proceed?  I have tried to connect the Thunderbolt display directly to the MacBook Pro, and the iMac to the Thunderbolt Display via the separate Thunderbolt cable, but there was no difference.  And since the MacBook Pro only has the one Thunderbolt port, I'm not sure how to proceed.

Yes, eww, the language definitely states two thunderbolt displays, but I can understand the confusion and was siding with how they could make the mistake to think it would work like they want it to. My appologies for not being clear on that point, but I think you make it clear that the language in the ad says nothing about an imac.
Having said that all the language about TB would suggest that this would be possible. http://www.apple.com/thunderbolt/
    High performance on display.
Thunderbolt I/O technology provides native support for the Apple Thunderbolt Display and Mini DisplayPort displays. It also supports DisplayPort, DVI, HDMI, and VGA displays through the use of existing adapters. So you can connect your Apple LED Cinema Display or other display, along with multiple high-speed devices, all from a single port.

  • WiFi issue: Is it possible to change WiFi settings in a way that it does not switch off in the screen-lock mode?

I have iPhone 4 and 4s. WiFi is automatically switching off on both phones when they are inactive (screens are locked). It is connecting back after some seconds I unlocke the phone. But because I have no subscribtion for the Cellular data usage, I am being cuted from Internet all screen-locked period. All that time people are not able to reach me by email, skype, or other programs using Internet. It is quite uncomfortable, especially when waiting for something important!  Is there a way to change this setting?

The iPhone does not shut down WiFi completely when asleep. It does use a power conservation mode. You should still receive notifications. There is no setting for this. It should work for you as it does for me if you don't have a network problem.
There are lots of problems reported with D-Link routers and they don't have a great reputation. If there is no help available from D-Link you may want to consider installing the DD-WRT firmware. It's available for the D-Link 615. See here for information: http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index
By the way, you do have Notifications enabled for the Apps you are talking about right? See Settings -> Notifications and Mail, etc.
