Imac to TV wirelessly

I have the equipment noted below, plus an airport extreme. My local network works just fine. I want to broadcast materials such as a nextflix movies wirelessly to my TV along with internet content such as ABC.com, and do away with my overly commercialized, hundred channels of disinterest cable TV. What hardware and/or software do I need? I understand Apple TV is only good for itunes content.

In other words, there is no hardware that will enable streaming content from my iMac and display it on my TV, other than another computer using, say Safari. I;ll check my old mini -- it is an intel I'm sure. Since I can now wirelessly share all kinds of data with other imacs in the house, this seems unreasonable. What about a slingbox, or even, at great expense, an appletv?
I just want to eliminate cable TV, but still be able to get various internet programs.
*"In other words, there is no hardware that will enable streaming content from my iMac and display it on my TV?"*
Yes there are quite a number of options actually. I stream everything from my Macbook Pro ( mostly an attached external Lacie Rugged TB HDD) to my PS3 and XBOX 360 - works great on both - via a program called "Orb" http://www.orb.com/
It supports most all media formats (of course it does not like Apples MP4's but that is easy enough to get around with any conversion sware) and they even let you log in via web portal and stream all of your media to anywhere you are/online if you so choose the option. What's so shocking is that it's free and it actually works really well. I even get stuff on my iPhone - of course there is an app for it! * end of shameless promotion * Only kidding.... ; )
Do you have Blue Ray player Sadon? Does the thought interest you? If it does and you have the spare coinage one suggestion I offer with personal experience is to buy a PS3. The BlueRay Drive itself in it is worth the price alone. It's still one of the finest available - and that is coming from an ex Blue Ray cynic (no I wasn't burned by HD DVD, I just didn't believe in either format until I got my PS3). It's our media hub connected to our 46" Samsung 1080p 120MHz LCD and surround sound setup. Once you load Orb on it (via web browser) it will stream right from your Mac wirelessly to your tv/stereo. Just another thought outside the apple box.
From what I've seen Slingbox streams whats on your tv or your digital tv tuner box from tivo, cable company set top box etc. Sling Box will not and in it's current state can not stream stuff from your computer to your tv.
Another method would be to save some money and skip all the hassle and just plug your mac into your TV and blow everyone away with Front Row!
For the record I am in fact adding the latest Apple TV into our above mentioned mix next time I find myself at our local general e goods establishment. We are then also kissing the money stealing mind numbing cesspool that is cable tv goodbye for good! The high quality on demand future has arrived!
~ This is the part where I tell you I have a bunch of apple stuff like iphones and ipods and a MBP and a G4 Quicksilver and Airports and oh how I would love a nice new quad core iMac anyday now...hopefully...this Tuesday...Apple? ~

  • How can I tell if my iMac is using wireless N?

I have my iMac connected via wireless to the router, and my PlayStation3 connected to the router with a wire. I use a program called MediaLink to stream videos, photos and music 'apple tv style' to the PS3. Now, with my old D-Link Wireless G router, I was having network errors all the time, so I figured I'd upgrade to a Netgear Rangemax Wireless N and take advantage of the iMac's N capabilities for a more reliable and faster connection.
I switched out the router last night and I'm actually having MORE errors now as opposed to LESS. Is there a way for me to tell what sort of connection I'm getting between the iMac and the Netgear? I know I can test my DSL speed using online utilities, but how do I test my internal connection to my router and see what speed it's getting and whether it's using N or falling back to G/B?

Hold down ALT (Option) when clicking on the the wireless icon on your menu bar. That will give you more detailed information about your connection. If your transmit rate is greater than 54 then it is 'N'.
What I've found is when I connect to an 'N' router, my iMac sometimes still does a 'G' connection. You can force it by disabling everything but 'N' on the router.
Also, try different channels to avoid interference.

  • I can't get my iMac to print wirelessly...

I have a 2009 intel-based iMac and a g5 IMac that connect to the internet via a wireless N+ Belkin router. I have two HP printers (a 2605 color laserjet and an 6500 officejet) connected with an ethernet cable to the router.
The g5 machine quickly identified both printers as "Internet printers" so I added them and was able to print wirelessly to both printers.
The newer iMac g5 prints wirelessly to the officejet, but does not "see" the laserjet as an internet printer (only as a "bonjour shared" type printer). I have tried everything, including setting up the printer manually by entering its IP address, and I can add the printer this way but I won't print.
If I select and add the laserjet printer under "Bonjour Shared" kind, it is unable to print (I either get a message that says "connecting to printer", which can last for hours, or I get a message indicating "Job accepted" but still nothing prints).
Before I switched Internet providers, both Macs could print wirelessly to both printers (I recently switched from a DSL provider to a cable provider, and then back to my old DSL provider).
Any help would be appreciated - very flustering!!

I connected a small photo printer to the router's USB cable and somehow this allowed for the iMac to once more see the HP Colorlaserjet as an IP printer. I happily tried adding it however, I get an error message indicating that the software is currently unavailable.
I still have the installation CD that came with the Colorlaserjet printer and I re-installed it last week so am unclear as to why this happens. I also tried downloading it from the Apple website but not luck either. I tried uninstalling the software (maybe this is the problem), but I can't seem to find the files in Finder (the manual recommends finding and deleting all PPD files, but must admit don't know how to search for these)
So I'm closer but still unable to print... hence my nickname...

  • I am using Photoshop CS5 on a new iMac with a wireless keyboard.  I used to be able to hit F11 to perform a custom sharpening action but now the F11 key is the volume control key and I have tried everything to disable or switch the volume key. I have also

I am using Photoshop CS5 on a new iMac with a wireless keyboard.  I used to be able to hit F11 to perform a custom sharpening action but now the F11 key is the volume control key and I have tried everything to disable or switch the volume key. I have also tried assigning other function keys to initiate the action. Is there a simple solution to this? What am I missing?

Try unmounting the volume on your iMac using Disk Utility. Then mount it again. You may need to reboot the laptop or relaunch its Finder process (using the Force Quit window) after remounting the drive on your iMac. Remember that no process may be accessing any files on the drive you plan to unmount, or the unmount will fail. Unmounting and remounting an external drive on my iMac made it become visible on my MacBook Pro after it had disappeared.

  • Using an iMac as a wireless station

Sorry if this has been answered before, but I did a search and could not find an answer. I am looking into getting an AppleTV and am wondering if it is possible to use my iMac as my wireless station in lieu of buying a base station (whether that be an Express or an Extreme). If so how do I go about setting that up, and what kind of broadcast range should I expect from my iMac? Or should I just buy a base station and use that? If so, any favorites?
    Thanks for your help.

You can set up an Ad Hoc network from an imac and manage without a new base station, in my experience range appears to be reduced when setting up such a network, but I don't actually use an Ad Hoc network so am not realy very well placed to comment on performance.
As to how to set up a network, best wait until you have the equipment in front of you.

  • Using iMac as a wireless base station.

Is it possible to have my iMac broadcast a wireless connection through airport to allow computers to join AND to get online, basically using the iMac as a wireless router. The iMac is currently connected through a LAN line.

    Yes. It's a built-in function.
Open System Preferences Sharing pane. With Tiger, click on the Internet tab. Set things there so that you:
    +Share your connection from+ *Built-in Ethernet*
    +To computer using+ Airport
Click the +Airport Options+ button to set up the wireless network. Note (or change) the name of the network. OK out of that dialog.
    Click the Start button.
On the computers using this service, look for the network name you noted above.

  • How can I get connection from iMac to TV wirelessly ?

How can I view photos from my Mac hard drive or from an external hard drive on my TV screen? My Sonia Bravia TV is in another room and has a Wireless LAN adaptor which detects my Router and connects, and also detects an external hard drive connected to the Router via Ethernet. But it does not detect my iMac (can be connected to my router via ethernet or wifi- makes no difference), nor can it connect to the external hard drive. I don't care which source I send the photos from, but at least one would be good! The Router is a Netgear DG834GT.

You can use an Apple TV.
Otherwise, you cannot do what you are attempting.  Your television cannot access the devices and files on your Mac.

  • Can I use a Time Capsule on a hard wired iMac and get wireless to other devices?

I have a 6 year old iMac that does not have an airport extreme card.  I have it connected to a cable modem ARRIS model TM502G which is also the VOIP for my telephone.  My question is, if I buy a Time Capsule, will I be able to have wi-fi for other devices like an iPad or iPhone even though my computer is not wi-fi?  If so, can you describe the order in which to hook up the Time Capsule to the existing modem and computer.  Thanks so much.

That is not the correct approach.. but you can do what you want.
Plug the TC into the cable modem.. Turn both off and restart the modem and the TC.. if there is a battery backup in the modem you may need to disconnect the coax cable in the back of the unit or drop the battery out.
Plug ethernet from the old mac into the TC.. use the wifi for the other devices.
Trying to route through the mac will be a pain.
A TC is not necessary for this.. if you don't want a backup disk.. you can use AEBS or any wireless router.

  • Solution for Connecting iMac to Uverse Wireless Network?

Hi. I would like to upgrade my 2003-vintage iMac flatscreen (that is now my secondary computer) so that I can connect to my Uverse network at home. I am considering using a USB adapter such as the one in this link:
    http://afterthemac.com/product.php?id=802.11nApple_Wireless_USBAdapter
Does anyone have any experience with this sort of solution? I would prefer to do this instead of installing an AirPort card. Any thoughts would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

As a group, the USB wireless adaptors have received mixed reviews, but largely because someone buys one that lacks Mac driver support. That seems to be covered in the model you've linked.
That leaves my only concern the statement:
...with optional-use Adapter Vertical Base Stand and 1 meter travel cable (two cables!) for up to 80% Increase in Signal Range
The bit about "two cables" makes me nervous. It's not clear if the adaptor takes up TWO of your USB ports. If you lost ports, that could be a problem. Also, bus-powered devices may not work from your keyboard ports. You may need to clarify what ports are recommended and whether the device has (or needs) a separate power supply.
I suspect a call to the vendor would sort this out.

  • Can I use my iMac as a wireless base station

    Hi Everyone
I would like some help on using my I5 Imac as my entry point to a wireless system. I have the ethernet connected to my Imac, I have gone to sharing and selected internet sharing so as to use my Imac as the unit sending out the wireless signal. First questions, with LION osx how do I password protect this wieless network I'm setting up?
Next I have 2 airport expresses. On is used to extend the range of my Imac signal and the other connected to speakers. Can someone walk me through the steps in airport utility to A - extend the Imac range using one of the airport expresses and B - connect to my powered speaker.
A lot to ask but any help would be greatly appreciated
    Cheers

  • Can I set a 2nd Gen. iMac to work wirelessly without Airport?

I have a older G4 tower that has Airport on it, but my ancient 2nd Generation iMac does not have Airport on it, and obviously will not connect to the internet. Is it possible to run the older iMac wirelessly without Airport? Is there anything I can add to the iMac externally instead of having to open it up and add hardware?
I'm not that computer savvy, so the most basic straight forward method would be most helpful.
    Thanx!

You could use an Ethernet wireless adapter. Examples of Ethernet wireless adapters are the Linksys WET11, Linksys WET54G, and the Buffalo Technology WLI-TX4-G54HP bridge.

  • Imac sharing my wireless to a PC over ethernet (and switch)

So I've got next to me an imac currently connected via a wireless N time capsule upstairs. I'm trying to get my PC hooked up to my Imac via "Internet Sharing". At this point I have...
Base station wireless-->Imac Downstairs-->Straight through to switch-->Straight through from switch to PC's NIC. I have a constant ping on my PC pinging my router's default gateway, and a ping on my iMac pinging the static IP address I set my PC to (Which is on the same subnet as the rest of my network).
Any ideas why they are just timing out and I have no connectivity?

IP address of my mac connection to the base station is 10.0.1.5, 255.255.255.0 subnet, router (Default gateway) address is 10.0.1.1
IP address of my iMac's ethernet going to the switch is 10.0.1.10, 255.255.255.0 Subnet. "Router: 10.0.1.1"
    There's your problem.
You have the SAME subnet for both interfaces on the iMac. This is not valid, and will prevent internet sharing from working
Each interface has to be in a different subnet. If your wireless link is using 10.0.1.x/255.255.255.0 then your wired interface has to use something different. Choose either something else in the 10.x.x.x range (e.g. 10.1.1.x/255.255.255.0), or something completely different (e.g. 192.168.1.x/255.255.255.0).
Your PC will need to have an IP address in the same subnet as the iMac's wired interface and its gateway address should be the address set for the iMac's wired interface.
