IMacs lose connection to windows server

We have recently moved over to macs in the office, so previously we had 3 PC's all connected to a WD Sentinel server where we access large files between us rather than keeping information on the computer.
We have slowly been moving over to iMacs but the problem is these lose connection to the server, so for example if we are transferring large image files, they will just stop, or if accessing catelogs on Lightroom that are stored on the server, we have to 'find missing folders'. This can happen every hour. The connection is also overall slower (for example loading previews/thumbnails) compared to the PC's, which arent even spec'd as high as the iMacs. It also has nothing to do with it going to sleep, it can happen in the middle of working.
All iMacs are connected via ethernet as the PC's were. The WD is meant to be compatible with macs and pc's, which is why we bought it.
Ideally I want to avoid having to splash out money on a Time Capsule and connect them all via thunderbolt, but wanted to check if this is my only option?

I would guess the user's Windows account is corrupted. Since Error -36 is a read/write error, it could occur if the user's server account record is damaged. Since you can use this Mac to logon to other accounts, the Mac is probably fine. Since other Macs can still logon, the Windows server 2003 is fine. This points toward a corrupted account.
I've experienced this phenomenon with Windows accounts and Windows PCs.
A test would be to logon to this user's account from another machine on the network, either Mac or PC. Failure from another machine would point to corruption of that account on the Windows 2003 server. If corrupt, it will need to be deleted and re-created. Backup any server data for this account, since deleting the account will destroy any server data for this account.

  • I have a time capsule connected directly to fiber connection. I have connected a windows server directly to TC and configured it for remote desktop connection. From my interanet I can access srvr but not from my home. What config I need on TC?

I have a time capsule directly connected to fibre optic point out. All pcs and macs are connected wirelessly to the internet. I have connected a windows server pc to TC. When configured for Remote desktop connection, I can access windows server from within interanet but don't know how to access it from internet. I guess I need to change some settings in TC to get some ip adress for the remote desktop connection from my home. Anyone who can help me out? Appreciate it.
    Narmin

I am a little lost now.. I have read again your title and your first post.. and they seem inconsistent.
    In the title you state.
From my interanet I can access srvr but not from my home.
Interanet is not a word I know.. I assumed intranet...are you talking about internet or intranet? And just to be clear say WAN or LAN.. !! Is your home part of the interanet??
In the first post you state,
I can access windows server from within interanet but don't know how to access it from internet.
Now this is more normal.. the issue is not in the home at all, it is accessible from there but fails from internet. If this is correct, then you can do a few obvious things to determine where the problem is.
But first I need to know are you actually testing from a different internet connection to your home lan.. you are not just trying the public IP from inside the LAN as that will fail due to the TC not doing NAT Loopback.
I am also assuming the TC is the only router in the network, and has the public IP on the WAN interface.
And I am also assuming you have turned on the ping responder and you can actually ping your public ip from the internet and get a response. This helps no end in figuring out where there are issues. Strange but I have no idea if there is a ping responder in the TC WAN so you might need to forward that as well. Also if you have a dynamic public ip address are you using dyndns or no-ip or some other service to connect.
    1. Test bypassing the TC.. plug the internet connection straight into the windows server,, and test if you have access. If yes, the TC is the problem.. if not, your setup on the windows server is wrong.. look at firewall in particular.
    2. Assuming from test 1 the TC is the problem, Post the screen shots of the port forwarding setup for us to look at.. that is by far the easiest way to check it out.
There are lots of references to port forwarding in the TC.. eg
    http://must-know-mac.blogspot.com/2008/07/how-to-port-forward-time-capsule.html
The things that generally go wrong are firewall on the computer that is accepting the port.
The ISP doesn't allow connections on a particular port. (not likely in your case)
The router is behind another router.. double NAT will kill any port forward.
Upnp has already allocated a port.. not an issue as TC doesn't use upnp although a reboot of everything after you set port forwards is well worth it.. amazing how things don't stick properly without a reboot.
IP on the receiving device is not static and so changes.
Not enough or right type of ports are opened. This is always messier than it looks as one port is often not enough for two way communications.

  • Can't create ODBC connection in Windows Server 2012R2

I just finished installing the instant client & odbc connection on Windows Server 2008R2. I then attempted to perform the same installation on a new Windows Server 2012R2 instance and encountered the following issue.
After extracting the contents of the 64bit instant client & odbc files into c:\oracle\instantclient_12_1, adding this to the path statement, and adding a TNS_ADMIN environmental variable, I successfully ran odbc_install.exe from an admin cmd window. I then opened the 64bit ODBC Data Source Administrator, clicked add, selected the Oracle in instantclient_12_1, and clicked finish. As soon as I did so, I received the following error: "The setup routines for the Oracle in instantclient_12_1 ODBC driver could not be loaded due to system error code 126: The specified module could not be found. (c:\oracle\instantclient_12_1\SQORAS32.dll)"
I uninstalled the odbc client (odbc_uninstall.exe) and attempted again with the 32bit version & 32bit odbc configuration screen. I get the exact same result with 32bit as I do with 64bit.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Outlook Mac Loses Connection to Exchange Server

    Hi All,
I've had this problem pretty since deployment a couple of weeks ago, so I'm hoping some one can point me in the right direction.  I'm running Exchange 2013 on a Server 2012 Standard box with the DC running on a different box, every thing up to date.
Mac clients running Outlook 2011 (14.4.2).
Periodically throughout the day, Outlook loses connection to Exchange server.  After several minutes, it will connect back up, and seems to operate normally.  During the down time, I am able to connect to OWA, and ActiveSync seems to work as well.
If I run the Remote Connectivity Analyzer while Outlook is responding, I get no errors and the "Connectivity Test Successful" message.  However, if I run it while Outlook is NOT responding, I get the following:
Exchange Web Services synchronization, notification, availability, and Automatic Replies.
Not all tests of Exchange Web Services tasks completed.

Following the adice I've seen online so far, I've:
I've made sure the auto discover in DNS points to the Exchange server.
I've disable auto-discover on the client, manually adding accounts, tried using their FQDN, local IP, LAN IP.
I've made exceptions to the proxie on the client.
Just not sure where to look next?  Appreciate any advice out there.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Before we go further, I'd like to confirm if your Outlook clients can work well when your Outlook MAC clients come across the issue.
If the issue only happens on your Outlook MAC clients, we can check the IIS log and confirm if there is any error releted to EWS. And you can recreate your EWS virtual directory to have a test.
    Thanks,

  • I can't connect to Windows Server via FTP

I've been using FTP for about 13 years and it works fine on Apache servers but can't connect to a windows Server via my Fetch FTP program. The site owner sent me a screenshot and copied/pasted the password so I know I have the info correct. It is still giving me errors.
Is there a special method to connect to Windows server via FTP?

  • AirPort in Intel iMac loses connection and does not see network

I bought an Intel iMac in the summer of '06. I had no problems connecting my airport card to my house wireless network which uses an AirPort Extreme Base Station.
In september I brought my iMac to college and used an AirPort Express as my base station. I had no problems other than that the computer did not automatically reconnect to the network upon start up.
In december I returned home and configured the AirPort Express (located on the main level of the house) to extend the network of the AirPort Extreme (located upstair in the bedroom next to my iMac).
Lately the iMac loses connectivity to the wireless network randomly while the computer is on, even in the middle of using it. Not only does it lose the signal but does not list my network when i click the airport signal icon on the top bar of the screen. Once in a while it will have it listed but will give me an error when trying to connect. The only way I have of fixing the problem is to restart the computer.
I know the airport base station works fine and the network is still there becasue I have a PowerBook G4 that I will put right next to the iMac and the PowerBook will still be connected to the network.
    Can someone help?

I have a very similar problem. My machine's airport connection has always been a little flaky, but it's always gone on working. However, yesterday I turned on WEP 128 bit encription. It now connects for a few minutes and then I see the signal strength gradually die until it goes off completely. There are then two ways to get it back working: 1. close the lid, then open it again; 2. tun off the airport, then turn it on again. When I do that the signal strength suddenly comes on full after about 3 seconds. The G4 iMac I have doesn't suffer from this problem. I am using a netgear access port as the base station.

  • My iMac loses connection to my AirPort several times a day.

My iMac loses connection to my AirPort several times a day, and I have to manually select the AirPort each time.  My other devices (laptops, iPads, iPhone) never lose connectivity to the AirPort - just the iMac.  What is going on?  It is just inconvenient to take the extra steps to reconnect my Wi-Fi every time I want to use my iMac.

Make sure your system is up to date with all available Software Updates since this problem was supposed to have been fixed some months ago, but I understand it remains for some users.
Assuming everything is up to date, try this: Using the Finder's Go > Go to Folder... menu, open the following folder
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Drag these three files to the Desktop:
    com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    com.apple.network.identification.plist
    preferences.plist
This will only make copies of them. If they still exist in the folder, select each of them and then drag them to the Trash. You will need to authenticate with your Administrator name and password.
Restart your Mac and log in again. Your wireless network will not be selected automatically, so select it from the Wi-Fi menu. The three Preference files above will be replaced with new ones.
Use the Mac and determine if this made any difference. If you think it's fixed, you can drag the three files from the Desktop to the Trash. If not, you can always drag them back to the original folder. You will have to authenticate again, and your previous network preferences will be restored.

  • IDevices Periodically Lose Connection to iTunes Server

Periodically, our Apple TVs and iOS devices seem to lose "knowledge" of our iTunes server.  This has worked fairly reliably in the past, but seems more problematic now (I'm not sure if this is due to Yosemite or some other update).  There have been no changes in our network.
I am a senior-level IT systems engineer.  Here is a relevant description of our simple home network:
    Network:
Time Capsule 3TB:  Main router on upper floor
iMac 5k (connected via ethernet, though Wi-fi is also enabled as a secondary connection)
DHCP with manual IP address so it doesn't change every 24 hours (set on both Ethernet and Wi-fi)
Set to wake for network access
Firewall enabled, but iTunes connections are allowed (tried disabling firewall entirely to no benefit)
    iTunes always running.
External USB drive for iTunes library storage; this does take a bit to spin up and sometimes the VNC connection to the iMac can timeout when trying to connect, but it always works on the second try.  I wish Apple would increase that timeout; seems to be a measly 5 seconds or so.  I don't think this is a cause of problems because, for example, the iOS devices don't even see the "Shared" icon, the display of which does not wake up the iMac.
Airport Express (N version), lower floor, connected via ethernet to the time capsule.
This is used as a network extender, operating in bridge mode with no network filtering.
Apple TV (3rd generation), connected to Airport Express via ethernet
When Home Sharing is working, the Apple TV and iOS devices can all connect just fine to the iTunes library running on the iMac.  This is true even when the iMac goes to sleep after 15 minutes.  It can work for several hours, but at some point the devices simply lose sight of the iTunes library on the iMac.  This is not supposed to happen because of an Apple service called Bonjour Sleep Proxy.  This runs on Apple TV and Time Capsule/Airport devices, and it wakes up the server you are requesting.  I thought perhaps the IP lease was expiring on the iMac, but setting a static IP didn't help.
I have more issues with iOS devices than I do with Apple TV.  Quitting and re-launching iTunes doesn't seem to help iOS devices.  EITHER restarting the iMac OR restarting the Time Capsule will resolve the issue (causing the Shared button to show up on the iOS device) temporarily, but it's guaranteed to happen again a day later.
I haven't tested setting the iMac to never sleep, but I will.  This is not a long-term solution, though-- I'm not going to leave a $4k iMac running non-stop 24 x 7, sucking in all the dust it can.  I also haven't tested putting all devices on the same subnet, but this shouldn't be needed-- Bonjour Sleep Proxy will even work over the internet, around the world.  Unfortunately I can't easily test that, as the Apple TV/Airport Express is downstairs and the iMac/TimeCapsule are upstairs.  However, it doesn't matter whether the iOS devices are connected downstairs or upstairs.  When it's working it works on both WiFi basestations, and when it doesn't work it doesn't work on both.
    Any ideas?

A small number of users have reported having to keep their Macs from sleeping. Can't say why and most of us don't have to so it does seem to be something specific to set up.

  • Network imac os x7 and windows server via firewire

    Hi Everyone
I am trying to speed up the connection/file transfer between an iMac (2.8Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X 10.7.4) and a Windows Home Server machine.
I am trying to use Aperture with a very large photo collection (approx. 120,000).  Since the iMac has insufficient internal storage I am using a Windows Server machine with 8TB of storage.  Transfer is currently via Ethernet and is extraordinarily slow - read unusable.  Also, any  request to the server results in a reconnection initiated at the mac end.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    Doc

I fear the answer may be more complex than you'd hoped.
On paper, gigabit ethernet (I assume you're using gigabit ethernet, yes?) runs at 1000mbps.
FireWire 800 (I assume you have FireWire 800 ports on the Windows machine, yes?) runs at 800mbps.
That would imply that gigabit ethernet should be faster. Unfortunately it's not that simple. Without getting into too much technicality, FireWire is a more efficient connection (typically point-to-point) than ethernet (typically switched), but you also have to consider protocol overheads (e.g. TCP/IP and SMB).
If the disks were in a FireWire 800 enclosure attached directly to the Mac I think there'd be no contest - a dedicated 800mbps link vs a shared 1gbps link + protocol overheads). However, you're proposing running SMB and TCP/IP over the FireWire link, which eliminates much of the advantage (or, at least, levels the playing field).
At the end of the day, I might expect the FireWire to go faster, but probably not by much. You might need to look at other areas of contention such as the link speeds, broadcast traffic, network load, etc.

  • IMacs running slow off Windows Server 2008

Currently the Creative Director and I are the only ones at our company working on Macs. We both are running OSX 10.6.8 on iMacs and we are having major slow loading time in Finder and very, very slow loading time working with Adobe files (PSDs/AIs/INDDs).
The company I work for has been bought out by another company and they had their tech guys come in to install a server.. I have recently found out that it is a Windows Server 2008. We were told to transfer our files to this server and ever since have been having problems. I have tried to communicate with some of the techs and they either complain about Macs or are not that familiar with Macs. They don't have any other designers at their company, so I am not sure how to get them to understand the issue.
I have done some research and found others with similar problems, but I am not really finding a solution or a discussion that is very recent. I think this is a problem that has been around for awhile, but we are new to it. The problem seems to be with the SMB sharing.
We would be grateful if anyone had any insight or infomation regarding working off a Windows Server 2008 from a Mac or whether we should recommend us working off a Mac Server which is backed up to the main server.
    Thanks!
    Aa

    Appreciate it Ed.
I let our boss know about Extreme ZIP and forwarded the link to our IT team. Although we haven't gotten a response back yet, I am thinking that a mac server would be a cheaper purchase overall since it wouldn't be a reoccuring monthly charge.
If we were to convert one an extra Mac Pros to a Lion Server, is it possible to have that backed up or connected to the Windows Server 2008? Or would we need to do that the Mac Pro. Not sure how to word this, my lack of experience in servers shines through here.
Really trying to save us from switching to PCs, thinking if we can convert the Mac Pro to a Lion Server it would be our least expenseive route.
    Thanks again,
    Aaron

  • Suddenly can't connect to windows server

I suddenly can't connect to the windows server. The username and password is correct, but it says "Connection Failed: Unknown user, incorrect password, or login is disabled. Please retype the name and password or contact the server's administrator." It pings the server as well. My internet and email works fine. The IT guys can't figure it out either, but they are not mac gurus. Connecting via smb comes back with "Could not connect to the server because the name or password is not correct" before I even enter login information, if that is helpful information. I also tried connecting through the server alias under the network and its the connetion failed as going through Connnect to Server and entering it as AFP://ipaddress.
Can it be from the 10.4.11 update? It was fine before the update I believe - but I can't recall for sure. I'm a lone mac user in a very pc company, so any mac expert advice would be helpful.
Is just strange since I have no problems connecting to our work email via GroupWise.

Connecting via smb comes back with "Could not connect to the server because the name or password is not correct" before I even enter login information, if that is helpful information.
Yes for any previous connection, Macs will send what's in Keychain Access, even if it's wrong, before you get asked... delete that reference in Keychain Access.

  • Trying to connect to Window server

    Hi all,
If anyone could help or suggest a solution I will be forever grateful!
I'm using a MacPro (OS X 10.5.7) at work to try to connect to a windows server. But they coming up with excuses left right and center to avoid giving it...
    Here what we're using:
"It is a proprietary system made by a San / Nas provider & is a mix of both.
On this system it is only possible to set the folder structure to use the following protocols, cifs (how windows connects) & NFS (how unix connects). The applemac can use either afp or smb as it’s explorer like protocol.
This is why we need to connect the windows PC to the server (as it talks to the server in cifs & windows knows what that is)."
    I asked:
"But you stated that NFS? Macs can use CIFS protocol and I’ve successfully connected to GROUPDATA. I’m just having trouble viewing the files. Would you be able to configure the permissions to at least read only?"
    Support replied with:
"The server is no longer licenced for NFS, it is CIFS only. Saved money on licencing.
When you go to the groupdata area you can see all of the top level folders, but cannot get any lower. It is not a permission thing. We use DFS to get to the folders underneath. The group data area is a virtual area (not real folders). That part uses windows but the folders below groupdata\newmedia (for example) use the filer& the cifs protocol."
    PLEASE HELP!!!!
    Thanks,
    Hal

Its a while since I used the software but I seem to recall it can register the client in active directory, hence the network admin password. This would be typed in by a Windows Network admin not by the user and only required the once.
Anyway there is evaluation email support so they can answer questions about their software much better than I can. Be interesting to confirm if it will do the job.
Just seen the post from Halmat, this would confirm what I thought. Please contact Thursby I am sure it can be sorted.
