Images blury, tinged and flat in LR4.1

Hi.. Just upgraded to LR4.1 from LR3 so I can upload my mkiii raw files. On camera, the images are crystal clear and sharp. The colour is correct. However, once I import them into LR4.1 they look completley different. They are not sharp, have a slight redness but most annoying of all completley flat/dull. At first I thought Id taken a pretty bad set of images then I realised they were not showing like this in-camera.
Can anyone give me any sugestion here. I am a photographer.. not a techie so non-technical speak is reeeally appreciated
I have spoken to Adobe and after being put on hold for 35 minutes the only advice they could give was to reboot my laptop (I know...) and then decided they couldnt help afterall as its beta
extra info:
I use a mac book
sRGB
shoot in raw
thanks

The fact that images are "completly flat/dull" is not a flaw of Lr or of the images. In fact a flat looking image is better than a snappy looking image.
Since you shoot Raw, the image that comes out of the camera and is imported into Lr is just a "blueprint" of the final image that emerges after you apply various develop settings in Lr.
A flat looking image is easier to work with, and it is always possible to increase contrast and vibrance or saturation. A snappy looking image is at first more appealing but it might have flaws - like too much contrast in certain parts and/or too much saturation - that you don't see on the screen but will become apparent when you print the image.
When my images are imported from memory card into Lr they are always flat and dull. I prefer it that way and have set my camera to "low contrast" and "low saturation". This flat image gives me the most workable image.
What the camera shows you is (mostly) not a true representation of the Raw photo data but a JPG created in-camera from the Raw data. It is a widely held misconception that what the camera shows you must be to "correct" image. It is not! Even on top-end cameras the colors shown on the panel (not the colors of the Raw image itself) are often not "true". But this is not important. The only important thing that the camera can show you is the histogram. If your histogram is OK, that is if neither the blacks nor the whites are clipped, you have good Raw data that Lr can work with and create a good image.
You say that your image looks more red in Lr than on the camera display. But you can rely on the colors shown on your computer screen only if your monitor is calibrated. If your monitor is calibrated your image colors will be shown as they are. If they are too red then (most possibly) the White Balance in your camera was not set correctly.
Finally, in your extra info you mention sRGB. What is set to sRGB? The camera? Your computer screen? Please specify.

  • Noise reduction and sharpening in LR4

    Am I the only one that feels that the LR4 NR is inferior to that of LR3? I swear the only slider that does anything is the luminance and it is not as precise or powerful as LR3. The detail and contrast slders don't seem to do anything?? And as for the sharpening, the radius and detail seem to not do much as compared to LR3. Is it just that it is slower than LR3? I just feel as if I can't dial in things as precise. I am using RC1 with 5D3 files. Should I go for RC2? I heard is was even slower. Thanks

    As far as I know, nothing was changed in the sharpening and noise redution between LR 3 and LR4, so I think you are "seeing things" that aren't there...and yes, PV 2012 takes more processing than PV 2010 but the image detail (sharpening and noise reduction) should be the same...

  • Discrepancy between execution time of state machine and flat code

    I am trying to optimize the performance of my application, and I've found that the same code executed as a case in a state machine, and flat on the block diagram takes a dramatically different amount of time to run. I'm trying to figure out what I'm missing here. The picture shows a test vi I threw together (the next post will have the diagram image for the "Add New" case of my Buffer Engine.vi - basically the same as what is in frame 5). The fifth frame in the sequence is what I am concerned about. It shows that executing the case in the state machine takes ~700ms, and flat, ~113ms.
    Any thoughts?

    Thanks for the suggestion Altenbach. I had to insert a for loop to replace array subset indivually for each column of new data to place in the buffer, but even with the extra processing, the result was about 80% faster. I guess I'll have to come up with a system to track where to place the data (it was convenient to always drop the data at the end..), but that shouldn't be an issue.
    However, this suggestion doesn't address the original concern. The same array resizing was going on in both the subvi and the sequence frame. This improvement should increase the performance of each, but doesn't explain the difference.
    As an aside, I contemplated using a queue, but without the ability to dequeue from both the beginning and the end, I don't see how I can use them for this. I want to trash the oldest data, not hold up the acquisition. In any case, I don't think it would be faster because the memory isn't pre-allocated. Now I am considering just storing the data in a control, and passing the reference as necessary. The question is, is reading the value from a control faster than reading from a shift register?
    Thanks again.

  • Image.getWidth(null) and image..getHeight(null)  returns -1

    Hi ,
    Plz tell me whats wrong with code

    There is no difference in main function getWidth/ getHeight and function getImageDimension getWidth/ getHeight
    If u remove getWidth and getHeigth in the main function i.e comment the 1st four lines in main function then the output is
    Output
    width :-1.0-- height :-1.0
    Plz help in understanding this.
    Thanks
    Venkat

    Toolkit images are not loaded until they are first drawn or you request a property from it (such as getWidth). To force the image to load and wait for it to finish loading, you can use the MediaTracker class. The ImageIcon class has one built in.
    Image image = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getImage("Picture.jpg");
    new ImageIcon(image); //loads the image

    Hi there,
    Will you be able to provide the backend script for saving the
    file data?Will you be able to provide the backend script for saving
    the file data?
    This example is created for a desktop application. Saving the
    file is included in this example, it saves in the application
    storage directory.
    // File.applicationStorageDirectory gets you to the local
    storage dir
    //On Windows, this is the "projectname" directory
    //(for example, C:\Documents and Settings\application
    data\projectname).
    // On Mac OS, it is /Users/userName/Documents.
    If you attempt to use certain functionality in a website, you
    need other functionality for storing the image on the server. There
    are lots of examples on that one.. Perhaps i need it in the future.
    If i do i will post an example on the forum.
    Also, may I post your link to other forums, so that others may
    benefit?
    Sure you may post the example on other websites and forums.
    I found it difficult to find nice examples, so the more the
    better ;)
    Just put underneath the example something like:

  • Create a new Buffered Image using Raster and ColorModel

    Sorry , I crosspost this message,because no one reply.
    Recently,I write a programme combining C++ and Java .
    The C++ part create a array containing image data in form of BI_RGB and biBitCount==32.
    The java part create a image using Raster and ColorModel like this:
       static int[] data ;
       DataBuffer db = new DataBufferInt(data, data.length);
       WritableRaster wr =Raster.createPackedRaster(db, 1024,768, 32, null);
       ColorModel cm = new DirectColorModel(32,0xff0000,0x00ff00,0x0000ff);
       img = new BufferedImage(cm, wr, false, null);But it doesn't work .
    it report this:

    //                 Check the number of pages

                   FileInputStream in = new FileInputStream(f);
                   bytes = new byte[(int) f.length()];
                   in.read(bytes);
                   in.close();
                   return bytes;
              catch(Exception e) {
                   e.printStackTrace ();
                   throw(e);
         }But this code save de image in the server; its posible do it without save.

    Numbers the iWorks program? Not sure you can convert it to that or just a list of numbers. Never heard of anyone that would even want to convert an Image file, Photo, to any other format. Other then another image format like JPG, PNG or a PSD Photoshop file.

  • Help! Saving an image to stream and recreating it on client over network

    Hi,
    I have an application that uses JDK 1.1.8. I am trying to capture the UI screens of this application over network to a client (another Java app running on a PC). The client uses JDK 1.3.0. As AWT image is not serializable, I got code that converts UI screens to int[] and persist to client socket as objectoutputstream.writeObject and read the data on client side using ObjectInputStream.readObject() api. Then I am converting the int[] to an Image. Then saving the image as JPEG file using JPEG encoder codec of JDK 1.3.0.
    I found the image in black and white even though the UI screens are in color. I have the code below. I am sure JPEG encoder part is not doing that. I am missing something when recreating an image. Could be colormodel or the way I create an image on the client side. I am testing this code on a Win XP box with both server and client running on the same machine. In real scenario, the UI runs on an embedded system with pSOS with pretty limited flash space. I am giving below my code.
    I appreciate any help or pointers.
    Thanks

    While testing more, I found that the client side is generating color UI screens if I use JDK 1.3 JVM for running the server (i.e the side that generates the img) without changing single line of code. But if I use JDK 1.1.8 JVM for the server, the client side is generating black and white versions (aka gray toned) of UI screens. So I added code to save int array that I got from PixelGrabber to a text file with 8 ints for each line in hex format. Generated these files on server side with JVM 1.1.8 and JVM 1.3. What I found is that the 1.1.8 pixel grabber is setting R,G,B components to same value where as 1.3 version is setting them to different values thus resulting in colored UI screens. I don't know why.

  • Silicon image sil 3112 and seagate 200GB sata

    hey everyone..
    im trying hard to get dma activated on my sata drive..i dont need raid(and cant have it..only one sata drive  ...but hdparm -tT shows slower performance on the sata drive
    /dev/sda = sata
    /dev/hda = pata
    /dev/sda
    hdparm -Tt /dev/sda
    /dev/sda:
    Timing cached reads:   1008 MB in  2.01 seconds = 502.32 MB/sec
    HDIO_DRIVE_CMD(null) (wait for flush complete) failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
    Timing buffered disk reads:   58 MB in  3.05 seconds =  19.04 MB/sec
    HDIO_DRIVE_CMD(null) (wait for flush complete) failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
    hdparm /dev/sda
    /dev/sda:

    hdparm -i /dev/sda
    /dev/sda:
    HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
    the results for the pata drive are
    /dev/hda
    hdparm -Tt /dev/hda
    /dev/hda:
    Timing cached reads:   996 MB in  2.00 seconds = 497.58 MB/sec
    Timing buffered disk reads:  120 MB in  3.00 seconds =  39.97 MB/sec
    im able to enable dma/set Xfer mode/IO/ only in the pata drive, not in the sata drive..in kernel config ive enabled "scsi low-level->sata support->silicon image sata support" and also enabled "silicon image chipset support under ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support"
    im right now using sata as root and the drive is stable..just need dma..thanks in advance

    According to Jeff Garzik's sata pages the drivers for the Sil 311x chipsets have beta status.
    I had worse luck with my no-name PCI Sil-SATA controllers: as soon as I connected a hard disk the kernel would not boot anymore when using libata drivers. I can only use the allegedly deprecated IDE drivers,  these work fine for me.
    The libata drivers should set the proper DMA modes automatically, but things are slightly different with SATA. Anyways, 20MB/s is proof enough that some sort of DMA is actually there. Performance would be much worse without any DMA at all.
    If you really want to use the libata driver you should try a 2.6.12rc kernel, libata has seen quite a many updates since 2.6.11

  • SQL Server Source and Flat File Target in OWB

    Hello All,
    I have a question, is it possible to have SQL Server as Source and Flat File as Target without using any intermediate Oracle table(s).
    like
    SQL Server --> ETL Operators --> Flat file?
    as i m getting errors in data type conversions here. but if i replace flat file with Oracle table it works fine. (though i have used some conversion functions for data types as well in Flat file loading but it is giving me errors)
    Thanks in advance.

    Yes this should be fine. Are you using the gateway to access SQLServer or code template mappings? You need to track which columns are throwing the data type conversion errors.
    Cheers

  • Problem in creating client side PDF with image using flex and AlivePD

    I need a favor I am creating client side PDF with image using flex and AlivePDF for a web based application. Images have been generated on that pdf but it is creating problem for large size images as half of the image disappeared from that pdf.I am taking the image inside a canvas . How do i control my images so that they come fit on that pdf file for any image size that i take.
    Thanks in advance
    Atishay

    I am having a similar and more serious problem. It takes a
    long time to execute, but even attaching a small image balloons the
    pdf to 6MB plus. After a few images it gets up to 20MB. These are
    100k jpeg files being attached. The resulting PDF is too large to
    email or process effectively. Does anyone know how to reduce
    size/processing?

  • How to use the same image map over and over

    Sorry, I posted this a couple of years ago and got a good answer by Murray. I'm so rusty with it, I can understand how it works anymore.
    Question:
    I have a large jpeg image map for a hundred pages. The jpegs are all the same except I changed the city name for each one.
    So for each corresponding htm page, the 4-5 links out are the same.
    Waht is the trick to not have to create by hand hotspots? thanks.
    I have previous notes, but I don't understand anymore, (too rusty) what they mean:
    The good news is that you really don't need a template at all.
    Just open one of your existing pages in DW, select that central image, browse to select the correct replacement image, and save the page with a new name.  It will have all of the image maps already there, from the original image.  One and done as they say."
    My old interpretation of this:
    select the large jpeg and then in link field drag over to the new city jpeg

    Ok, Nancy, code copy/ paste did work fine.
    what does this mean:
    "Change the image in the properties panel to display your new image."
    (the image is displaying ok)
    NEverthesless, I think I got Murrays old notes.
    Here is my new version of Murrays writing, easiest way I think:
    You open up a pre-existing html, say Chicago. Then drag over with pointer to the new jpeg you want (Buffalo). It replaces Chicago with the buffalo jpeg, all links work perfectly. Then do a save as called Buffalo.

  • After downloading IO6, can't capture photos from Facebook. I get "save photo" instead of "save image".  While browsing, save image comes up and photos save to camera roll.  Seems to be a problem only on FB.

    Downloaded IO6 on my iPhone 4s.  Now I can't capture a photo off Facebook to the camera roll.  When I try, I get a "Save Photo" tab rather than a "Save Image" button,  The photo does not save to camera roll.  For email images and Safari images, "save image" comes up and save to camera roll.  Seems only a problem with images on FB.  Any ideas?  Thanks

    You launched iPhoto and from its Preferences you selected Connecting camera opens.....

    You had already done "Repair" and "Rebuild"?  These usually takes scores of minutes or hours.
    Does the Library on your external drive work from the external drive?  Navigate to it in Finder and double-click the name.
    If it does, delete the problem Library, empty the System Trash, reboot, Verify your system disk using Disk Utility (and might as well repair permissions while you're at it), reboot, test the external drive Library once more to confirm it works properly, then close it and copy the Library to your system drive.  When the copying is done, double-click the Library (now on the system drive) and see what you get.
