IMAP email issue with hundreds of phantom emails arriving

Hi guys,
I have seen this phenomenon described on other forums but haven't found a solution as far as I can tell, so am hoping someone here can help us please.
We recently switched to IMAP email with virginmedia (previously had been using POP with btinternet). The whole IMAP thing is taking a little while to get used to but we are getting used to it.
Now the wierd bit.
Every now and again I notice hundreds of emails appearing to arrive (the status bar tells me they are arriving), but nothing lands in my inbox apart from a few real ones.
Although we are on a mac running lion, it seems to be a frequent problem on PC's with Outlook running IMAP. I have used Virgin webmail and checked - there really aren't hundreds of emails anywhere.
Thanks for any insight or advice you can offer.
regards,
Chris

Imap does have folders for sent mail, trash, junk all of which (unless you specifically turn it them off) will end up syncing.  Not sure what your problem is but if virgin mail is moving things around on it's own (like to spam folders) those changes will sync to you.

  • Mail App and IMAP sync issues

I am facing IMAP sync issues with Mail App ver 4.4. I have specified the automatic fetch interval as 1 minute. The problem is the App does not seem to send requests to the server to sync the Inbox folder alone, but it send requests to get STATUS and sync the other folders.
Has anyone else faced similar issues.

Not many of us would set the interval to be only 1 minute -- too often for the speed of many connections. Have you tried 5 minutes to see if the behavior continues?

  • Having email imap synchronization problems with outlook 365 proplus

    Hello,
I have email imap synchronization problems with outlook 365 proplus.
If I sent emails , my sent items box does not synchronized.
This is really a bug, because I see more problems like this on internet.
Please make ASAP a solution , this is not professional
    JMR

    Hi JMR,
Assuming you are referring to Outlook 2013 by "outlook 365 proplus". This is actually because Outlook 2013’s IMAP implementation has changed when compared to previous versions of Outlook.
While configuring the IMAP account, Outlook will talk to the IMAP server for the correct folders first. If Outlook 2013 can’t find the correct folder for the Sent Items in your mail server, it will create a folder which doesn’t sync with the mail server.
To sync the Sent Items folder with IMAP server, we can try to root the mailbox:
    Go to FILE->Account Settings->Account Settings…
Double click on your IMAP account.
Click More Options… button, then Advanced tab
Type "Inbox" as the "Root folder path"
    Hope this helps.

  • IPhone 6/iOS 8 email issues with wifi connection

    Hi
I have just upgraded from an iPhone 4 (iOS 7) to an iPhone 6 (iOS 8) and am having an issue with my pop email account. I used my iPhone 4 backup to set up new iPhone, so all the settings were as they were in my old phone. I have two email accounts, one is an IMAP account and the other is a POP account (which is my main email), I have no problems connecting to the server and downloading emails when connected via 4G (its super fast), but when I am connected via wifi, the POP account takes ages to connect to the server and check for emails (stuck on checking for email). I can speed up the process by closing mail app completely and reopening, then it checks and downloads really quickly (IMAP account has no problems), but this is frankly a pain.
I have spent ages on the phone with Apple support, who have got me to delete my POP email account twice, reset network settings, reset the phone using on/off button and home button, all to no avail. They are intent on telling me it's my email service providers fault, but as I pointed out there is no issue on 4G and my old iPhone (using iOS 7) on wifi has no issues, so can't be email provider. I have also tried using Apple's wifi in store to rule out router issue and the problem happened there too.
Have now run out of suggestions and options. I'm not sure if it's the phone itself, either a hardware or software issue (Apple support think not). Someone told me that it could be the wifi on my phone blocking the connection to the server. I have an appointment booked at the genius brand they have suggested wiping the phone and setting up as a new phone to see if the problem occurs, but this seems a bit drastic and I would lose all messages etc. Any help would be appreciated.

I have solved the issue! I tried my pop account on other devices with iOS 8 and the same thing happened, so I deduced that the issue is a glitch in iOS 8 with wifi and pop accounts. I managed to get hold of the IMAP settings for my email provider and all seems to be well. Happy days!

  • Godaddy IMAP email no longer downloads with iOS 8.1

no problem sending, however, no new email will download.  I rebooted, deleted account, added it (which it adds fine), it just no longer downloads email.

I just found the following status update on godaddy's support page (https://support.godaddy.com/system-alerts/):
    IMAP/POP October 20, 2014 at 1:13 PM
We are aware of an issue with IMAP impacting our customers. While we are fixing it, you might experience longer than normal phone support hold times. We recommend using POP or your Web Based Email in the meantime. Thanks for your patience.
Hopefully this IMAP problem is just a coincidence and has nothing to do with the update to IOS 8.1.
My Gmail IMAP is working fine, but no luck with GoDaddy IMAP on 8.1.
    Frustrating!

That sounds like a settings issue to me. Check with your IT depatment to make sure you have it configured properly.

For your work email, do you use a well known server or do you use their own server? Their server IMAP and SMTP addresses might of changed or you entered them in wrong. It might be something with your router but unless you blocked every incoming connection, then it should work. I would talk to your tech guys at work to see if it is on their end.
Hope this helped a bit, Sean

  • E6 stopped sync with IMAP email server

Hi, since Friday28th of October, in the morning I am experiencing a rather unpleasant issue: my Nokia E6 dos not connect to my company's email IMAP email accounts. I take the opportunity to report other 3 issues
I have 2 emails accounts @mycompany.com that were regularly being used. I did not update the firmware nor performed any changes on the phone, all of a sudden the E6 does not connect with the email accounts, there is no error message.
    I tried the following:
    1) Re-entered the password of the email account, I confirm this is right
    2) Created one of the email accounts that were on the E6 on 2 other devices (Ipad and Palm Pre), they work perfect, both on Wifi, on my operator,(Orange) and on an other phone operator (Swisscom)
    3) deleted one email account, from the E6. I restarted the phone (by holding the button 8 seconds) and recreated the email account, this is not possible, I get the following error message:
" service temporarily unavailable. Try again later. "
    4) I repeated the test (point3) both on WiFi and using the 3G operator. I got the same error
On the E6 there is also a Gmail account, which works flawlessly.
Using the email is not an option for my business, so I wish that THIS TIME I will get an effective reply from NOKIA. (please NOKIA don't tell me again that I have to use OVI account or my mailprovider does not work, because as explained I tested the settings on other devices.

What you say it makes absolutely sense, I can't imagine otherwise any other explanation why suddently my email does not work.
However when you go to the mail wizard, to create a new account it's stated:
"During the activation procss, your email address, along with tech information such as your phone's serial number, may be sent to Nokia. Nokia will not process or store any identifiable information after the activation without your consent"
I thought once the account is up and running I was disconnected from Nokia servers. me fool.

  • I am having some issues with email. My iphone shows 4 emails as unread yet when I look thru all my emails, both on my iPhone5 and my outlook there are no unread emails. How do I clear this up on my phone?

I am having some issues with email. My iphone shows 4 emails as unread yet when I look thru all my emails, both on my iPhone5 and my outlook there are no unread emails. How do I clear this up on my phone?

Email does not and has never synced between the iPhone and the computer. It sounds like you may have had your PC set up to use POP3 for e-mail, which will download e-mail from the server and delete it, causing it to vanish from your phone if the phone was set up for IMAP. IMAP provides full synchronization between the server and clients. What you delete on one will vanish from the others. This is the preferred method of managing e-mail as it prevents e-mail from being downloaded, for example, on a PC and making it inaccessible on your phone.

  • Issues with sending mail when using 2 email accounts - possible bug?

    Hi all,
Having issues with trying to send email from the 3g iPhone. I have 2 IMAP acounts set up on the phone, one
which works fine but when I try to create mail from the primary account as soon as I hit send it exits the mail program and goes back to the home screen.
Both IMAP accounts have identical settings apart from the username and email address. On the primary account there is no sent messages folder on the iPhone whilst there is on the account that works. I've had a look in the advanced settings and it is programmed to store sent messages in the local sent folder which doesn't exist. I've tried selecting it to store in a IMAP folder as I thought maybe it was crashing as the local folder wasn't there but it has the same result.
Have deleted the account and entered the settings back in again to try to coax it to create the local sent folder but cake up with the same problem.
    Suggestions are welcome.

You have their SMTP servers mixed up, go to Mail>Preferences>Accounts>Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP), click on the server then choose Edit SMTP Servers and select the correct one for each account. Then check the Use Only This Server box

  • Shared IMAP email with PC

    Hello,
I have a question, in the office we have shared info@ IMAP mail which we receive in copy on our personal emails. I am the only person in the office with a MAC the others are all PC. The problem is that when I read the copy of the info mail in my personal IMAP it is shown as already read also in the info@ IMAP. Do you know if there are some settings who can cause this matter? Thank you!!!!!

I think it is you who does not understand. If you have an account Info@ or any other imap account, when you read the email it is marked as read on the server. If someone else has access to the same info@ account, then when they subsequently access the same account the emails on the server that you read are marked read. So their subsequent access to the same account will show the emails as read. The same would happen if the other person accessed an imap email account then you subsequently accessed the same account. You would see the emails as read.
Your issue is not a Windows compatibility issue. Your issue is that you are sharing an imap email account. Read about the imap protocol here: https://www.google.com/search?q=imap+email+protocol

  • I have an iPad with IMAP email accounts set up but I can find no "inbox, drafts, trash" folders anywhere, either on my ipad or desktop Mac.  How can I set them up?  They do not show on my MacMail preferences either and I can find no way to add them.

I have an iPad with IMAP email accounts set up but can find no "inbox, drafts, trash" folders for each email account anywhere on my iPad or in Mac Mail.   How can I set them up? I can't find anyway to set them up anywhere.  Thanks

    Hello blu monkey,
I found some resources that I think might help with the visibility of your IMAP email folders on your iPad and Mac.
On your iPad, you may need to follow the steps in this article to make sure your folders are visible:
iOS: If IMAP Mail folders are not visible
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1393
On your Mac, I am not sure if you have the sidebar enabled, but you can enable it using the steps in the article below.  When this is showing, you should see your email account listed near the bottom with a triangle next to it.  When the triangle is pointing down, it should show your folders:
Mail (Mountain Lion): Show or hide the sidebar
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11763
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Sheila M.

  • I have an issue with some PDF documents   some MS Office documents, notably MS Word when received in eMail as attachments not displaying on iPhones, iPad 2s

    Hi,
I have an issue with some PDF documents & some MS Office documents, notably MS Word when received in eMail as attachments not displaying properly on iPhones, iPad 2s & new iPads?
PDF docs - areas of the doc only show as grey splotches regardles of viewer
    MS Word Docs -
inserted graphics don't display at all,
tables & lists especially with borders are broken &
tables & lists missing the borders &
tables & lists missing the 1st 1-2 lines of the lists/tables.
This is replicated on iPhone 4s, iPhone 4Ss, iPad 2s, iPad new (x2)
It certainly happens in iOS 5.1.1 & iOS 5.1
We believe it all worked aok in iOS 5.0.1(?) & prior
There is no problems reading/seeing these PDF & Word docs on anything other than iDevices.
This is rather critical for us & if not quickly fixed/rectified will prevent us from further purchases of these devices
Rolling back to iOS 5.0.1 or prior I believe isn't possible because of the BaseBand update(?) & isn't much of an option because of the quite noticeable Battery/Charging/WiFi improvements in 5.1 & 5.1.1

    Hi,
I logged a call with AppleCare & have since had explained why this occurs (some time ago)
I'll try to explain what was indicated to me.
iOS has a limited Font Set & this affects what PDFs can display. You need to use iOS supported fonts in your PDFs to see/read them properly
These supported fonts are indicated here => http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4980
Regards MS office docs, iOS doesn't have much of an API to work with MS Office documents at all so is stuck with 3rd Party Apps to try to do it.
Unfortunately Mail in/on iOS uses the API to attempt to open/use MS Office attachments unless you tell it to use an App to open the attachment.
I have had success opening & reading MS office docs now with CloudOn, but find it slow & very awkward to use.
Not too sure if this helps others, but at least it explains why this is occurring

  • Since I updated Firefox (around 3/8/11) I have had issues with logging in to my Comcast email. Comcast says that it is a software incompatibility, perhaps Firefox.

I received an automated download of a new FF version around March 8. I immediately began having issues with my email accounts on Comcast.net using my desktop (Windows 7). I do not have these issues with my laptop (FF 3.6.3, 4/29/10). Comcast spent almost 2 hours with me on several sessions, and demostrated that I can reach the email account through a work around, but not directly. They said that this was a software issue with some software package interfering with my login. Comcast reps could enter my email with no issues, so it has to be at my end. I removed a recent version of Adobe Flashplayer which had autoloaded around the same time as FF; when I tried to reload Flashplayer today, it told me that it was incompatible with FF.
