Delete emails from server after retrieving with IMAP protocol?
Hi,
I am using Mail as my email program and have set up my account with IMAP.
When I use the POP protocol, I get the option to 'Remove copy from server after retrieving message'. When I set up Mail with the IMAP protocol, there is no such an option. The result is that my server inbox is slowly filling up and I manually have to login on my server to delete older messages.
Is there a setting to automatically remove retrieved messages from my email server using IMAP?
Thanks for your help.
ErikDear Thomas,
Thanks for the clarification! Now I understand the mechanism.
Still I would like to know if there is a way to automatically remove retrieved messages from the e-mail server. Would it help to automatically move my incoming messages in INBOX to a different mailbox in Mail.app? How would I set this up?
Thanks for the response!

Javamail adding some default properties for IMAP protocol
Hi,
I'm using Javamail API 1.4.2 to read emails using IMAPS and POP3S. It looks like Javamail API adding some properties by default.Though I'm using the IMAPS to get mail store it's adding some plain imap related properties like mail.imap.fetchsize, mail.imap.statuscachetimeout, mail.imap.appendbuffersize and mail.imap.minidletime+.
see the debug trace below:

I have tried Jamail API 1.4.3 but the result is same. I think the protocols for IMAPS should be *mail.imaps.fetchsize, mail.imaps.statuscachetimeout,
mail.imaps.appendbuffersize* and mail.imaps.minidletime+.
Here is the code I have used to get the store
public static Store getMailStore(String protocol, String emailServerHostName,
int portNumber, String userName, String password) throws MessagingException {
Store store;
Properties props = new Properties();
boolean isSessionDebugEnabled = false;
props.put("mail.host", emailServerHostName);
props.put("mail.port", portNumber);
props.put("mail.user", userName);
props.put("mail.store.protocol", protocol);
Session session = Session.getDefaultInstance(props, null);
session.setDebug(true);
store.connect(emailServerHostName, portNumber, userName, password);
return store;
public static void main(String[] args) {
Store store = null;
try {
store = getMailStore("imaps", "myhost", 993, "myuser", "password");
Folder inboxFolder = openFolderForRW(store, "INBOX");
} catch (MessagingException e) {
e.printStackTrace(); //To change body of catch statement use File | Settings | File Templates.
Am I need to add these properties manually for IMAPS?
Thanks,
PrasadKTIt's just laziness in the code that prints out the debug information.
It's using the correct property, but the debug output hardwires the
property name. Yes, I should clean it up... -
Mailto protocol instead of MAPI for email submission
Using Adobe live cycle Designer 8 I have created forms and have inserted email submit button for people to submit the forms to different folders in sharepoint directories. It works fine if you use notes, outlook etc but can not make it work with web based email.
The email submit button uses the MAPI protocol for sending emails. This only allows these forms to be submitted using email clients based on the computer locally. Our compnay has switched to webbased mail. Both IE and Chrome uses mailto protocol and thus does not allow forms to be submitted. Any suggestions on how to make this work. ThanksThere is a preference setting that you have to configure. I don't have access to a machine with 11 on it at the moment, but it's something like Edit > Preferences > Webmail

Why all of a sudden am I having difficulty sending Gmail emails? I get a send error. When I run diagnostics there is a SMTP and IMAP account for Gmail and I am not sure how to fix this.
Hi jodilynnf,
When using Connection Doctor to see what is could be causing the issue, look for the red dots to let you know what is wrong. Then all you have to do is correct that information. You can double click on the section that is giving you issue and it will take you there. Most issues could be just password being entered incorrectly. Take a look at the article below to walk you through troubleshooting issues with Mail.

Why can't I set up POP/IMAP emails for my Muse website in Business Catalyst? I don't have the option 'use this service for email as well as hosting the website' under Advanced options.
Is this due to my Hosting Plan? Appreciate any answers.Your site is a CCM site which is on a WebBasics plan (This plan does not provide hosted emails on Business Catalyst).
If you want to create email addresses on this site, you would need to setup your email server elsewhere and configure the MX records on your site to point to that external mail server.
If you want to use Business Catalyst's hosted email services you would need to use a WebBasics+ or higher siteplan. To upgrade your CCM free site, Access your site's admin area -> Site Management -> Upgrade Now -> choose the desired site plan and billing frequency -> Add personal and credit card details -> Submit.
Please refer this article about setting up email accounts on your BC site: http://docs.businesscatalyst.com/user-manual#!/site-settings/email-users
For setting up records to point to external mail server, check out http://docs.businesscatalyst.com/user-manual#!/site-settings/email-users/creating-inboxes- for-your-users

Hello, I'm using Mountain Lion and mail does not leave the mails on the server, either on iCloud nor on other suppliers (orange). They are both using iMap protocol... Any place where I could change this ? Thanks for any hall; Christian
Under what circumstances does mail "not leave the mails on the server"?
If you mean that you delete them (or move them out of the inbox) on one device and then find them not in the inbox on the server when you look from another device, that's how IMAP is supposed to work. (Note that the deletion or moving might be the result of rules you have set up in Mail.)
If you mean something else, please explain your issue in more detail. -
Receive multipart message for IMAP protocol
I need receive content of multipart (not plain text) message with IMAP protocol.
this code correct for POP3 and IMAP paintext message only:
Part messagePart=message;
Object content=messagePart.getContent();
if (content instanceof Multipart) {
messagePart=((Multipart)content).getBodyPart(0);
System.out.println("[ Multipart Message ]");
String contentType=messagePart.getContentType();
System.out.println("CONTENT:"+contentType);
if (contentType.startsWith("text/plain")
|| contentType.startsWith("text/html")) {
InputStream is = messagePart.getInputStream();
BufferedReader reader
=new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(is));
String thisLine=reader.readLine();
while (thisLine!=null) {
System.out.println(thisLine);
thisLine=reader.readLine();
any ideas?
Thanks.You will find a better example, which looks at the parts recursively, if you look in the "demo" directory of your JavaMail download. I think it's msgshow.java but there aren't that many to choose from.

Suggestions for email service on E71
I want to signup for a new email address and before I do I want to make sure it is completely compatible with my phone(E71) and can use all its features(Whatever they maybe).
Could you guys suggest a service? For starts, I'm thinking Gmail is the best solution as of now.
ThanksGmail is perfect for use on the E71-1 as it offers both POP and IMAP protocols according to your usage requirements and it is free!
You could also consider another local mail provider, as long as they support POP/IMAP you should be fine,
Exchange is possible as well if you are in a corporate division that has an exchange server, if not it is unlikely you would be able to use this type of mail

Outlook 2010 Problem selecting ISP for email default when sending receiving OK
I am using Outlook 2010 for email with an ISP. Recently installed Outlook 2013 on a new laptop using the same broadband wireless router connection. The email file is showing as my ISP but in the Data files window although my ISP file appears I
cannot select it as the default it remains on the Data file with my ISP below it.
When I send an email it goes straight to the sent box but is undelivered.
I can receive email in the Inbox from other computers.
In the Email account details only my ISP appears with below it a statement that new messages will be delivered to the ISP account ending .pst
How can I make my ISP the default data file.
On my laptop Outlook 2013 has the default as my ISP account ending .ost
Help pleaseHi,
Based on the description, you have a pst data file in Outlook 2010 and an ost data file in Outlook 2013, I think you are probably using an IMAP account?
Please note, in Outlook 2010, IMAP data files can't be set as default, because IMAP doesn't support the special folders - calendar, contacts, tasks. Outlook needs a default data file to store these information.
This has been changed in Outlook 2013, we can now set the IMAP data files as default.
If you have further questions, feel free to post back.

I am trying to configure BFD for static routing on a 2431 running IOS 15.1(2)T to detect and route around simple multihoming faults. According to Cisco Feature Navigator, BFD for static routes is supported on c2430-ik9o3s-mz.151-2.T.bin. But when I follow the config guide steps to configure it, IOS does not recognize the commands, such as:

ERC3-IAD2431-3(config-if)#bfd ?
% Unrecognized command

The Skinny on IMAP vs POP Email and work arounds
It took me a while to figure out email so I figured I'd share what I've learned so far. Do feel free to reply with more useful tips for us all if anyone has some.
First email accounts are either IMAP or POP and the first step was figuring out the difference:
IMAP
Mirror of the server
What is done one place is done everywhere because you are looking at the server.
Advantage: can access email from multiple devices/locations
Disadvantage: May have to mark as read individually when adding to a new device
POP
Independent of the server
What is done one place stays that place because you have moved it from the server.
Advantage: once it's delivered the mail can be viewed offline
Disadvantage: where ever it is delivered once, the other divices do no have access to the mail
Think of the server as a huge mailbox as big as a room!
IMAP
With IMAP the mail stays in the mailbox until you delete it permenently,
but once it is deleted it has moved out of the main part of the huge mailbox into the trash can in the room of the huge mailbox (the trash folder settings decide when the trash gets taken out and deleted permenently) when deleted permenently it is no longer in the trash can in the huge mailbox it has been taken out the the dump.
If you read it then it's like opening the mail but leaving it in the huge mailbox.
If you move it to another folder then it's like moving it to the desk in the room but still in the mailbox.
POP
With POP the mail is taken out of the mailbox and moved to the computer (in the other room)
Once you request/download your mail it is taken off of the server and whatever is done with the mail the server no longer has access to it
If you read it (or move it to a folder) it is the same thing as Mom taking the mail out of the huge mailbox and putting it in the car, if Dad checks the mailbox the mail may have been delivered by Dad is not going to find it because it is no longer in the mailbox it is with Mom in the car.
Here a link that helped me figure it out:
http://www.office.mvps.org/glossary/pop_imap.html
So after you decide wether you want to use IMAP or POP which email carrier is which?
Microsoft Exchange is IMAP
MobileMe is IMAP
Yahoo! mail is IMAP
Hotmail is IMAP
Gmail is IMAP can be set up as POP
see here for that: https://discussions.apple.com/message/8149520#8149520
~Most web-based email is IMAP (if it is designed to be accessed via the web by ANY computer it's likely IMAP)
settings for incomming/outgoing servers: http://www.emailaddressmanager.com/tips/mail-settings.html
AOL is POP can be set up as IMAP (origanally intended to be used with only one computer via the ISP)
see here for that: http://email.about.com/od/aoltips/qt/Access_an_AOL_Email_Account_with_any_POP_IM AP_Email_Program.htm
Comcast is POP
Qwest is POP
Earthlink is POP
~Most ISP (internet service providers) email from a cable/internet company of a business specific email is a POP account
Use this chart HT1277 ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1277 ) for contacting your service provider or IT department to acquire the proper settings for your email account!
Finally, as promised, work around for your email:
If you only have access to a POP email account and it won't work on your iPhone or want it to act like an IMAP account, then follow these steps~
1) Get a free IMAP email account (using Gmail for this example)
2) Sign in to your Gmail account
3) Click the gear icon in the upper-right
4) Select Gmail settings
5) Select the Accounts and Import tab
6) Under Send mail as, click Add another email address
7) In the 'Email address' field, Enter your name and alternate email address (ie the POP address)
8) Choose use Gmail's servers to send your mail
9) Click Next Step>>
10) Click Send Verification
(Gmail will send a verification message to your alternate email address to confirm that you own it)
11) Open your other account and click the link in the message Gmail sent
12) Add your new Gmail account to your iphone
You will be able to send, receive, reply, forward, delete, and manage folders of your other address through your Gmail address on your phone and it will appear to the recipients as though it came from your other address.Allan, I have run into questions in this area recently since I got my iPhone. I have a long time Charter ISP POP email account which I've accessed with Apple Mail. This has worked fine. I also have a Yahoo web based account which I've also used separately.
Now when I set up my Yahoo account on my iPhone it worked great. But when I set up the Charter account it resulted in an IMAP account with incoming and outgoing servers being mobile.charter.net. Charter website implies that all email accounts on all mobile devices must be set up like this. My question is whether I can, or should, try to set up the account manually as a POP on my iPhone so it will behave similarly to the Charter POP account in my iMac?
I've run into some conflicts after using my iPhone to access my Charter email. My inbox on my desktop iMac in Apple Mail will give me the message that another client is accessing the email account when I try to get new mail soon after my iPhone has been accessing the Charter account. I've wondered whether this is a conflict between IMAP and POP?
Confusing. Thanks.
