IMAP setting to save mail permanently on my computer?

Hey there-
So when I got an iPhone (iFun), I needed to convert from pop3 to imap so I could read mail in multiple locations.. and properly have things marked as read or not, etc. Anyhow, I have an email set up where I only have 20 megabytes of storage space on the server (it's free, I don't complain), and I like to save every single piece of email that comes in.
So, is there any way to keep the mail on the server for about a week before they get permanently chopped from the server, yet permanently archived on the puter???
Any help with this is super appreciated!
THANKS!
-Robert

Hi Robert,
I'm not certain, but since nobody has replied yet, I think you'd have to have both a POP & iMAP account, perhaps where the POP account is set to leave the mail on the Server, then empty the IMAP one once a week!?
I can't test it as I have no IMAP. Just throwing out ideas.

OK. No problem. It isn't required.
Which one do I use? POP,IMAP,SMTP?
You use whatever your email provider uses. SMTP is the standard for outgoing mail, with POP and IMAP used for incoming mail. Most providers support both options, some only support one or the other. You'll need to check with your mail provider to determine which is appropriate for you.

OK. We've already ascertained that MobileMe is not a requirement here.

OK, that's a start. You can configure Mail.app with either of them, or both if you prefer.

[email protected] is not a valid server address. That is your email address.
You'll need to check with Hotmail what their SMTP server address is (their help section is so awful I couldn't find it before I had to go shower to get clean).
For Yahoo, they have a help page on enabling POP access to your mailbox, along with the relevant entries you'll need to put in your mail client.

  • How can I save mail messages to my computer and not my mail program

My mail program seems to be slow.  I'm not sure why.  I get the spinning ball frequently.  I need to save mail messages sometimes for a few years and there are hundreds of emails. Is it better to save them on my computer than my mail program?  I may need to retrieve them at some other time so they need to be readable.  Is that possible?
    I'm using OS X 10.9.4. I have a 3.06 GHz processor and 12 GB of memory.  Thanks

You can select to export a folder to save as a .mbox file. This file would need to be imported if you wanted to view the messages.
    Select mailbox (folder)
Under Mailbox in the Menu bar select Export Mailbox...

  • Can't send any emails from various accounts set up in mail 4.4

I have a number of different email accounts (3 POP, 1 IMAP) set up in mail 4.4. Lately i have had some problems sending emails from some of the accounts. Usually, I get the outgoing mail server reject message, and then I try another server, and then it sends. THe next time I go to send an email through the outgoing server that I was rejected by, it sends without problems. Each time I shutdown, restart, or open the lid on the macbook, I go through the same process. UNTIL today. Now, I can't send ANYTHING outbound, via any of the 4 outgoing mail servers that I have set up. I have run with this same configuration without change for almost 3 years. Only change is that I have recently changed ISPs. Please help. Work from home, so critical problem.

I had had the same problem after changing my ISP. It is definitely a Mail 4.4 problem. I partially fixed it by trashing all four of my e-mail accounts in mail preferences (simply click on the minus sign to delete them) and rebuilding them all with the correct settings and passwords. This worked fine with ATT, MSN and QWest but the Mail app simply refuses to connect to AOL's outgoing mail server (smtp.aol.com). In other words, I can receive AOL mail but I cannot send AOL mail using the Mac Mail app. Have to log on to AOL's web site and do it that way, which is a huge pain in the you know where. Mail 4.4 is definitely hinky -- keeps erasing passwords and asking for them again and again. As a result, my keychain contains numerous repetitions of the same password for each mail account. I don't know why Apple doesn't fix this problem, which recurs with depressing regularity according to many Mac Mail users on this forum.

  • Difference between Exchange and IMAP tabs when setting up a mail account

I understand that for iPhone to communicate with Exchange, IMAP access is required:
"Exchange email accounts must be configured for IMAP to work with iPhone" (from the iPhone user guide)
My questions is, what (exactly) is the difference between the IMAP and Exchange tabs when setting up a mail account on the iPhone? I have it working with secure IMAP inbound (port 993) and SMTP outbound (port 25) on my Exchange Server 2003 server; however I would like to know the difference between plain "IMAP" and "Exchange" in the iPhone configuration.
Searching the forums has revealed lots of people asking how to set up IMAP on Exchnage (Microsoft documentation would seem a good place to start), but I don't seem to be able to answer this question.
If anybody knows the answer, I'd be most grateful. One post suggested that there is no difference; however I can't imagine Apple cluttering the interface with an option if there is an existing feature that's identical!

Thanks for answering Lawrence. I'm not using Outlook as the computer I sync with is running Mac OS X with Office for Mac 2004, but guess it considers Outlook and Entourage to be the same.
I'm still a little bit confused when you say "takes the settings" as most Outlook clients are not configured for IMAP (MAPI-RPC is the native protocol, although some may use HTTP-RPC) and mine didn't seem to take any settings automatically - I had to set it up manually on the iPhone.
    Cheers, Mark

  • Can't set up my mail account.  Virgin info says it should be POP Mac says it is IMAP

    Hi
I am trying to set up my email account.  I have recently changed from windows to a mac.  Virgin media say it should be a POP account  - Mac says IMAP on account type.  I have at least three mail accounts now and non of them work.  How can I re-start mail set up.  Any help would be great.  Thank you.

    paulinefrombolton wrote:
The account information says Account Type:  POP which won't let me alter it.  The next box down says Description and so on.  I can only alter certain things but nothing that lets me alter the Account Type.  I downloaded "how do I set up apple mail on os x" from the virgin website but it doesn't tell me how to alter the POP to IMAP etc.  Can I just delete all the mail boxes and try again from scratch?  Thanks for the reply.
If mail has lready been downloaded you need to back it up before you delete the account, POP does not synchronize mailboxes so you may have the only copies of your mail on your computer so:
In Mail, go to Mailbox>Export Mailbox and repeat for each mailbox with content you want to keep.
Then delete the whole account and re-enter it but leave the password blank, click create and you will get to a manual setup page in which you can choose iMap/Pop etc. You will need to know the correct server settings so get them from Virgin.
From this page (VirginMedia mail Setup) it appears that VirginMedia mail is POP only so you can't change it to iMap.

  • Setting up apple mail account with imap fails

    Hi folks.
I have a mail address from a german provider www.all-inkl.com.
My hardware is a MacBook Air 1,7 GHz Intel Core i5 with MacOSX 10.7.5
I do not succeed setting up Apple Mail (Version 5.3) for this mail address using IMAP. Strangely it works on Thunderbird 17 for Mac.
Find the settings below (those which Thunderbird accepts):
    INCOMING: imap.XXXX.de – Port 143
    OUTGOING: smtp.XXXX.de – Port 587
    STARTTLS
    Email: [email protected]
    Username: j.raff
Apple Mail says (translated from German):
"Login at the IMAP Server 'imap.XXXX.de' failed. Make sure Username and Password are correct ..."
    Does anyone have a clue?

Thank you for staying with me.
And, yes, I have the same error as described above.
    I double checked all details.
Still, there is some ambiguity with username and servernames. Username may either be the email  OR email name before @ OR client number ... Tried all.
Btw, in the Android E-Mail App it doesn't work either. I guess I have to call the provider.

  • How do I set up an IMAP Yahoo! Beta mail account in MAIL app?

    Hi there!
I would like to know how do I set up an IMAP mail account from Yahoo! Mail Beta in Mail app. Can someone help me?
    THX!

Please disregard my post above. It appears that Yahoo does now indeed have IMAP access. From Wikipedia:
    "Free IMAP and SMTPs access
It is possible to get direct IMAP access. Yahoo! operates IMAP and secure IMAP servers (imap.mail.yahoo.com in particular), which are globally accessible. However they require a specific, non-standard IMAP command to be sent before login is done, namely: “ID ("GUID" "1")”. This non standard command is not required if accessed from mobile networks, typically those used by smart phones on mobile carriers such as AT&T, T-Mobile, etc... For regular internet users, it is feasible to modify an open-source e-mail client to send the ID command, and there are modified versions of Mutt and Mozilla Thunderbird available to download.[25] Alternatively, one can connect an unmodified e-mail client through an IMAP proxy that adds the ID command. A commercial software package that accomplishes this is called 'Yahoo IMAP Connector',[26] available here. Mutt-dev (1.5) works without any modifications.
It is also possible to send mail through mail clients as Yahoo! also operates an SMTP server (smtp.mail.yahoo.com). It is necessary to enable SSL through port 465. For IMAP and SMTPS access the username is the user's Yahoo! Mail address and the password is the same as for webmail access.
Mac OS X users can directly set up an IMAP account in Apple Mail 4.4. After entering a full name, email address and password, hold down the Option key. The Create button will change to Continue, allowing one to manually configure the account settings."

  • How can I save mail messages on iPad

I (strictly, my wife) have just bought a WiFi-only iPad to replace an ageing MacBook, and I also have an iMac.  I have a need to store and organize a limited number of Mail messages in the iPad, such that they are available in the future when I do not have internet access - i.e. while travelling.  These are varied, but typically contain reference information, reservation details, receipts, directions, etc.
Previously, this was easy to do with the MacBook.  I set up our GMail account as POP3, and filed such messages as we needed in as many Filed Mail mailboxes as I wanted.  Unfortunately, if you set up a Mail account as POP on the iPad, you can't define Filed Mail mailboxes.  And if you set up the account as IMAP, you don't have access to your filed mail when not connected to the internet.  So you're damned if you do, and damned if you don't.
So here's the question.  Is there any organised way to save messages permanently on the iPad?  And any attachments need to be kept as well.  While strictly they no longer need to be in Mail format (i.e. can't be forwarded or replied to), that would be a less convenient approach, and those all-important attachments would have to be dealt with.  But I am willing to be flexible.
And before anyone says that POP will not work with multiple devices, GMail POP has a feature that allows the same email to be downloaded to multiple devices as well as being held on the server if required, and all sent emails are also echoed back to all devices (the "recent" feature).  This has worked fantastically up to now.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Do you need to be able to initiate this entirely from the iPad, or would it be acceptable to have to use one of your Macs when you save one of the limited number of messages? If involving a Mac would be acceptable, I can see ways to work around the iPad's lack of local mailbox storage.
You could use one of the various free cloud storage services that allow general file storage and local retention on the iPad (for example, Dropbox or Dump Truck, but not iCloud).
For Dropbox, you would make a folder for this cluster of saved messages inside Dropbix. For each message you want to save, create a folder inside that cluster folder, do a "Save As..." in Mac Mail.app for the text body, then a "Save Attachments..." if appropriate. (The inner folder wouldn't be strictly necessary for messages without attachments, but I suggest it for consistency.)
The key part is to open Dropbox on the iPad and mark the message and attachments as favorites (starred). That causes Dropbox to preload them on the iPad and retain them there until they are unstarred (lose favor).
You could probably do something similar with Evernote and favorites.

  • How do I set up a mail account for an older macbook?

I'm trying to set up a mail account for my dad on a used (but refurbished) macbook. It's running 0SX10.6.8. I'm not sure how to configure the incoming and outgoing mail servers. I didn't have to do this for my macbook air and my brother did not have to do it for his pro. I don't know if im supposed to use POP or IMAP. A window will pop up asking  for the account type, incoming mail server, user name, and password. I don't know what to do from here.

    Hello,
Your Internet/email service provider should be able to tell you exactly what to enter. You may also want to take a look at the following web page:

  • GAH! How Can I Set Up My Mail Accounts?

I have 15 email accounts in total, each with it's own unique 64 character password. Manually setting up email accounts on my devices is clearly not an option. No worries, because up until today, I simply synced my mail account data from iTunes. You only have to do it once, you don't need any sort of on-going email account data syncing. The accounts keep their own mail in sync, so the 'setup sync' was a one time deal. And I didn't sync the accounts with mobile me, or later icloud, because I wanted different accounts on differnet devices.
Well I just got my new iPhone 5S and I'm trying to set up my mail. But I can't! There's no way to sync Mail data! I tried turning on iCloud Keychain (which was a complete disaster the first time I tried to use it, but I need my email!) I tried deleteing my iCloud account and re-adding it on my phone (and my old phone that I erased, and re-setting up as an iPod). But no matter what I do, I can't get any mail accounts to show up.
I NEED my email on my phone. There is no way around it, I cannot function without that. I don't even put my phone number on my business cards any more, only email. Email HAS TO WORK. But thanks to Apple, I can't get it on there.
It would seem that my only option is to get it to sync via iCloud Keychain? That's going to cause me an unlimited amount of headaches, but if that's the only way to get mail accounts to sync, then I guess that's what I have to do. But how do I do it? I have turned on iCloud Keychain on all of my devices and computers, but no mail accounts are syncing.
All my Macs are currnetly on Mavericks, and all my devices (iPad mini, iPhone 4S deactivated, iPhone 5s) are on iOS 7.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
This type of service is offered by IMAP email accounts such as the me address that is associated with your iCloud account.
Are you saying it isn't working or are you trying to add a third party address (ie gmail, yahoo etc etc) to your mail account and expecting it to work like an IMAP account.

  • I have a POP account set up in Mail, has been that way for years. Today it isn't working.

I have a POP email account that's been set up in Mail for years. Today it won't send or retrieve email, continually asks for my password but doesn't keep it. My iCloud email is fine. According to an Apple Support document, "Mail: Troubleshooting sending & receiving email" (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3276), it appears as if it's a problem with my email provider. I've spoken to the email provider and they say it's not a problem on their end. I can log into my email account using the provider's webmail and all is fine there. And, since I'm still receiving my email on my iPad & iPhone, I'm not entirely convinced it is a problem with the email provider.
When I go into Mail Preferences, my password shows blank (even when I re-enter it) and it shows my Outgoing Mail Server as Offline. When I choose Edit SMTP server list and click on the Advanced tab, my password is missing here as well. Re-entering it doesn't help.
I've tried Take All Accounts Offline then Take All Accounts Online and that doesn't work. I would delete the account and set it up again, but I get a warning message that if I delete the account, I lose everything in the account; folders, email, filters, etc. I can't afford to lose the existing emails.
I'm using Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and Mail 6.2; I believe they are both the most recent versions.

I checked the settings with Network Solutions and they are correct. As to archiving, is it possible to turn everything into one big archive or does each folder and subfolder need to be archived individually? I've looked at the documentation and I get the impression that everything is archived separately. Also I couldn't find a mention as to whether it's possible to archive or some how save all of my filters.
I use Time Machine as my general backup. I back up all the Mail files every couple weeks (on a flash drive) but now I've learned, the hard way, that's not often enough.
    Thank you.
