IMove loads completely before playing on Homepage

I have a perplexing problem.
I just created a 20 minute iMovie that I put on my .Mac Homepage.
To do that, I saved it as a Quicktime file with the settings of 12
frames per second and the size of 240x180 and put it in the Movies
folder of my iDisk account.
So I've done all the stuff on my Homepage to publish it, but when I
try to view the movie when I use the URL for it, it takes forever to
load. I timed it this afternoon at 3 and a half minutes before it
would start playing. So I thought it might be taking so long because
the file was so large at 50 MB. But I have another movie on my
Homepage that's 30 MB, and it loads and starts playing instantly.
I noticed that the one that plays right away continues to load as
it's playing, but this new one seems to want to completely load
before it starts playing. I've tried looking for settings to see if
I had set something different, but I don't see any settings for the
Homepage, and nothing either in iMovie.
Does anybody have an idea what might be happening?

Well, Karl, thanks for your tips about what you did with the original ..I'll try that too.
Meanwhile - while Discussions was down earlier today - I took the original (..the blockiness came from the original compression with QT 6.5.2, I think..) and played it in QT7 and then just clicked 'Share', and QT offered to set it up as 'Automatic' - which meant shrinking it down to 240x180 (from 320x240) which would produce a file size of 10.4MB instead of 41.1MB.
So I let it do that, and let it directly upload it to my Homepage ..whereas previously I'd 'Exported', put the exported file in my Desktop iDisk, then sync'ed the iDisk to dotMac and manually created a movie page..
Anyway: it 'Shared' it straight to my dotMac Homepage, where I selected a 'Frameless Black (Large)' blank page, thinking that by putting it in a 'Large' page that would expand the size from teeny 240x180 to something larger ..which it did.
But the expansion to a larger size makes it rather less sharp and lowers the apparent resolution. That's because it was encoded with the old QT 6.5.2 codec, not the more advanced, scalable H.264 codec of QuickTime 7. And when seen with QT 6.5.2, some of the black borders on the page, intended to automatically pad out the 4x3 aspect ratio to a possible 16x9 shape, don't meet the edge of the movie itself, so there are white bands at the left and right of the movie. When seen with QT7, the page's black edges do correctly fill to the 4:3 ratio so that there's black all around the edges of the movie.
[..Because it was originally "manufactured" with QT 6.5.2, this movie's visible when using either QT 7 OR earlier versions of QuickTime on your Mac..]
I then uploaded - I mean 'Shared' - it also to a 'Frameless (Black)' page which wasn't called 'Large', so it's in the actual 240x180 size and shape which QT 7 prepared, and both QT 6.5.2 and QT 7.0.3 correctly play it back as 4:3 - with black going right to the very edges of the movie, and the 'native' resolution's nice and sharp.
Both of these load and start playing almost instantly, on my fast broadband connection.
So what I draw from this is that:
(a) Smallest useful filesize makes the movie load and play far faster;
(b) Use 'Share' to send a movie to a Homepage, accepting Apple's default values, to package it so that it loads and plays at its optimum speed, without needing to specify 'Fast Start' or 'Hinted' or whatever;
(c) Choose the appropriately specified page for the relevant aspect ratio of the movie ('normal' for 4:3, 'large' for 16:9 or HD);
(d) 'Creating' the movie in QT 6.5.2 gives slightly lower resolution and blockier artifacts than using QT7's H.264 codec, but allows everyone to view it ..and nothing of that is altered by using QT7 to 'Share' or upload it.
The 'large' version is here, and looks a bit unsharp, as it's been 'magnified', and will have white edges if you're viewing it with a QuickTime version earlier than 7.
The 'normal', un-enlarged version is here, and looks OK in both QT 6 and QT 7, but is rather small, and therefore loses some impact.
But both of them load and play pretty much instantly on a fast connection!
[..Finally: the source of all this was a cable TV programme about films: 'America's Greatest Love Stories' ..which I recorded on a TiVo in MPEG format; then played it out of the TiVo and into an Archos Video Jukebox (..predecessor of a Video iPod, but which includes its own excellent hardwired codec..) in DivX format; FireWired it across from the Archos' hard disc into my old PowerBook running 10.3.9 (..as there's no DivX codec for 10.4 yet..) and into QuickTime 6.5.2; then uploaded that using QT 7 on another PowerBook. And yet it's survived, and most of it looks, and sounds, great ..though rather small, and with less impact now. But I find it incredible that it survived all that so well!..]
P.S: I could watch it forever, couldn't you?..

  • How prevent movie from loading completely before playing?

    Hi,
    how do I prevent an swf from loading completely before
    starting to play in the browser? When simulating a download in the
    Flash application, several preload stages work perfectly, but not
    in the browser. Preload stages don't appear, instead it takes ages
    for the 3.5 mb file to completely load before displaying the first
    frame of the movie.
    I have tried inversing the load order in export settings and
    different flash versions, but just can't get it to work.
    Can someone help? Thank you!

    hi kglad
    I thought it should be that way; the point is that I don't
    want to add code that loads the entire movie before starting to
    play the first frame, but only a certain number of frames (i.e. 11
    out of 35, for example). I'm trying to do this with this code in
    the first frame:
    ifFrameLoaded (11) {
    gotoAndPlay("start");
    in the simulation, it works perfectly, but when uploading the
    movie and viewing it in html, the entire thing loads, and the
    preloader doesn't appear.
    Many thanks for your help.

  • Webm loads completely before playing and starts playhead at the end

    Hi,
    We are trying to figure out playback of our WebM videos in Firefox. Looking at the native video player by going directly to a video url we have some strange behavior.
    We have found that the browser seems to download the entire video before beginning playback. When the video finally does download and playback, we find that often the playhead will be placed at the end of the video. If the playhead is not at the end of the video, you can't just click play, you have to click a position in the "timeline" to get the video to begin playing.
    Ideally, the behavior would be that the video beings playback as it starts to download from the beginning of the file.
    We are encoding the videos with FFMPEG using libvorbis and libvpx. We server our content from Amazon Cloudfront, but can also test from a lighttpd server (same behavior).
    Please let me know if you would like more information and thank you for your help!
    Here are a bunch of our videos to look at:

    Has anyone found an answer to this? I tested and used a different converter other than Miro and the issue didn't happen. The webm file played normally. Fact is, i dont want to pay for another converter - I really want to use Miro.
    ...anything?

  • Is there a way to make YouTube download my selection completely before playing (like you can do with songs on iTunes)? I'm getting sick of start and stop during viewing!!

    Apparently I typed my entire question into the subject line without knowing what I was doing!
    I want to FULLY download selections from YouTube before attempting to view them. Just like you can select to fully download the samples of songs from iTunes. I am sick of the **** YouTube video going in and out, especially when I'm also downloading something else at the same time!
    Please tell me how to set this 'preference,' if there is a way!
    Thanks !
    David

    Sounds like you did this on the fly.
    MM is supposed to open the Marker Panel Dialogue
    M just sets a marker
    Not sure if either are intended for on the fly during playback .
    There is also a Marker Icon on the Source Window Pane  >>

  • When opening a new tab, Firefox often freezes for a few seconds until the page has loaded completely.

    When I open a new tab, the tab must load completely before Firefox will respond at all. I cannot do anything in Firefox; Windows and the rest of my programs that are running are unaffected. This happens randomly, but it is more common on certain websites. How do I fix this?
    Thanks!

    Please check for the problem in [[safe mode|safe mode]].. does it work there?

  • Need to load complete preview before playing from the iTUNES STORE  No such selection.

    REBUFFERING STREAM is constant during preview of songs.   The solution suggested by the community was to: Go to iTUNES preferences>STORE and select "LOAD COMPLETE PREVIEW BEFORE PLAYING.   I tried that but the STORE does not offer this option.   WHAT NEXT?

    I have the same problem with my iphone 4 . I solve it with giving permission to the cookies on safari from the settings.

  • Firefox 4 wont load page completely or play videos on youtube after clearing cache

    Firefox 4 wont load page completely or play videos on youtube and ive noticed its always after clearing cache. after a while it will start working properly but its kind of annoying. Know what the problem is?

    oh, there is still a pending issue with youtube unfortunately. I can play videos individually but if I click on a video that is part of a playlist it lags and then goes to a blank space where the video should be. Is that a flash player issue? So, I can play videos individually but not playlists.
    Any word on that would be awesome
    Thanks again

  • Preload external swf before play

    i have a project i am working on...but for some reason the solution i went with is not satisfying my instructor......
    so....here is my new code ( which is incorrect but i cant figure out how to arrange the preloader at the end )
    var Xpos:Number=0;
    var Ypos:Number=0;
    var swf:MovieClip;
    var bgloader:Loader = new Loader();
    var bgURL
    if(page==1){
    bgURL=new URLRequest("pages/home.swf");
    else if(page==2){
    bgURL=new URLRequest("pages/about.swf");
    else if(page==3){
    bgURL=new URLRequest("pages/projects.swf");
    else if(page==4){
    bgURL=new URLRequest("pages/experimental.swf");
    else if(page==5){
    bgURL=new URLRequest("pages/contact.swf");
    bgloader.load(bgURL);
    bgloader.x=Xpos;
    bgloader.y=Ypos;
    bg.addChild(bgloader);
    stop();
    var percent:Number = bgURL.bytesTotal;
    if(percent==100){
    gotoAndPlay("start");
    first off, i dont even know if what i am being asked to do is possible...but, what i am being requested to do is obviously load in the external swf BUT, the external swf cannot play until the MAIN swf is directed to "start"......
    i have done this numerous times in as1 and 2....but back then things were totally written different and if you do it the same way you run into migration issues....
    i thought this was solved already, but my instructor will not accept the method of using an event to be dispatched in the external SWF to tell the main swf when to play "start"....im not sure if there is any other way to do this?
    he wants the external swf to contain NO code other than what is necessary for its internal functions....
    everything is to be coded in the MAIN swf.....
    so im trying to use bytesTotal, and the percent==100 is just a number i threw in for example purposes.....i am just not figuring this out....
    any help is greatly appreciated

    From what I could gather based on your description, your instructor wants you to start playing when external swf is loaded completely.
    If my understanding is correct, what you need to do conceptually is:
    1. Instantiate Loader
    2. Add event listeners that you are interested in.
    3. Execute code corresponding to these listeners in their corresponding handler functions.
    As for No 2 - Usually there are at least 3 events that are of interest when dealing with Loaders:
    1. Event.COMPLETE - dispatched when entire target is loaded
    2. ProgressEvent.PROGRESS - dispatched when a new bytes packet arrives.
    3. IOErrorEvent.IO_ERROR - dispatched when something goes wrong with loading (say, wrong url, etc.)
    In your particular case it is supposed to be something like this (may not work because you did not describe what is the point of different swfs loading and how it affects entire application). SEE COMMENTS:
    stop();
    var swf:MovieClip;
    // always specify datatype
    var bgURL:URLRequest;
    if(page == 1) {
         bgURL = new URLRequest("pages/home.swf");
    else if (page == 2) {
         bgURL = new URLRequest("pages/about.swf");
    else if (page == 3) {
         bgURL = new URLRequest("pages/projects.swf");
    else if (page == 4) {
         bgURL = new URLRequest("pages/experimental.swf");
    else if (page == 5) {
         bgURL = new URLRequest("pages/contact.swf");
    var bgloader:Loader = new Loader();
    configureListeners();
    // now you are ready to load
    bgloader.load(bgURL);
    * Adds listeners.
    function configureListeners():void {
         // NOTE!!! Listeners are added to contentLoaderInfo - not Loader itself
         bgloader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, onLoadComplete);
         bgloader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(ProgressEvent.PROGRESS, onProgress);
         bgloader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(IOErrorEvent.IO_ERROR, onLoadError);
    * Removes listeners.
    function removeListeners():void {
         bgloader.contentLoaderInfo.removeEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, onLoadComplete);
         bgloader.contentLoaderInfo.removeEventListener(ProgressEvent.PROGRESS, onProgress);
         bgloader.contentLoaderInfo.removeEventListener(IOErrorEvent.IO_ERROR, onLoadError);
    function onLoadComplete(e:Event):void
         // depeneding on the situation
         // you may want to add loaded swf
         // but before if swf exists - you need to remove it
         if (swf && this.contains(swf)) {
              removeChild(swf);
              swf = null;
         swf = bgloader.content as MovieClip;
         addChild(swf);
         // now play
         this.gotToAndPlay("start");
         // dont't forget to remove listeners
         removeListeners();
    function onLoadError(e:IOErrorEvent):void
         // deal with the error
    function onProgress(e:ProgressEvent):void
         // here you update preloader if you have one
         trace("Progress", e.bytesLoaded, e.bytesTotal);
    On a side note, the way you deal with instnatiating URLRequests is not the most efficient or scalable. A better approach would be to keep them in an array and call by index. Note, conditionals are gone.
    var bgList:Array = [
              "pages/home.swf",
              "pages/about.swf",
              "pages/projects.swf",
              "pages/experimental.swf",
              "pages/contact.swf"];
    var bgURL:URLRequest = new URLRequest(bgList[page]);

  • Pages not loading completely or at all.

    This is a problem I've been having for weeks and weeks. Pages in Safari (or in IE or in Firefox) will not load completely or at all. For example, the apple.com homepage does not load at all and neither does ebay. However, the amazon homepage will load almost completely, but a few of the images don't appear.
    I've tried numerous ideas.
    I've run through the power cycle. (Turning my router and cable modem off, and then restarting them.)
    I've run network diagnotics.
    I've reset Safari.
    I've typed in IP addresses manually.
    We bought a new router.
    It even got down to me having to reinstall the operating system. (The computer is fairly new, so there wasn't any important information on it.)
    I tried calling my ISP, but they don't know what's wrong.
    Apple won't speak to me because my 90 days is up, and my parents won't pay $160 for the care plan.
    I'm becoming desperate at this point. I love my new iMac, but there isn't much I can do without the web.
    Oh, I also can't download updates, access the iTunes music store, or anything else that requires internet acces.
    We have three windows computers in the house that are all running fine on the WLAN.
    Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Any other ideas?
    Hmm, can you try logging into another user account to see if the problem is present there as well? This will confirm where the root issue is - your user area or system wide. It sounds like it wil be system wide but best to double check.
    If you don't have another account you can use System Preferences -> Accounts -> [+] to create a test one (and [-] to remove it if needed).
    I've typed in IP addresses manually.
    Can you expand on what you mean by that? Are you referring to the DNS addresses or typing the IP address in the browsers address entry box?

  • Pages not loading completely

    I am seeing intermittent issues with web pages not loading completely, or taking a long time to load. Some times embedded images will not load. The page will often load, but the page loading icon in chrome will carry on spinning.
    This is happening periodically and at various times of the day, but has been going on for a couple of weeks. The rest of the time, my broadband speeds are fine and very snappy, as normal.
    I've restarted my router (homehub 3) several times.
    This doesn't seem to be a general speed problem.
    Using speedtest.net, i can see that my download speed is pretty consistent at just under 20mbps.
    Using pingtest.net i see no packet loss, with good ping times.
    Using the BT speedtest tool, my line speed to the house is around 23mbps, and my download speed is again around 20mbps.
    This is effecting all devices attached to the router, both wired and wifi... both windows PC/laptops and ipad/iphone devices.
    I am not sure where to look next, and am kind of dreading a conversation with BT helpdesk.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks... That's a long thread, and I am not going to pretend to understand all of it.
    It seems to be similar issue, but I am seeing this any webiste, including this one, not just on a handful of specific sites.
    If I understand the thread above correctly, that issue is with BT, and was apparantly fixed, although the most recent post suggests it has not been. And that if this is the same problem, I can't do anything to fix this myself, other than raise this BT?
    Having played around a little more, I think I can see that this problem becomes more accute when i am jumping rapidly from one webpage to another in quick succession, until i get to the point where pages are just not loading anymore.

  • Mafia Wars can not load completely because you are missing a plugin, pop up is too small to see the missing pluging, how do I find out what it is?

    Yesterday, while playing Mafia Wars, I kept getting a bar notification that "The game can not load completely because you are missing a plugin? When I clicked on the box I got an 1/2" popup, which probably contains the information I need but it is too small to find out what it is. You can not maximize it. The is nothing visible to click on. Flash and Java are all up to date, as well as all other plugins. No plugins are disabled. How can I find what I am missing?

    Try a program such as Disk Inventory X or OmniDiskSweeper.

    Okay well, for the past 2 days, Habbo will not load completely while I'm on Firefox. The loading bar comes up and it begins to load, but it never finishes. Why is this happening? I've tried using other browsers and it the loading bar does finish loading all the way, but there are a few difficulties, like some peoples characters won't show up. Is there something wrong with my computer? Please help me. I have a Mac, just to let you know, in case that helps you with anything.

  • Aol Mail Not Loading Completely

    Hello
    I just recently noticed all my mail on my aol does not load.
    all my accounts load completely my .mac,gmail etc..
    just the 1st 10 emails load and that's it, it doesn't give me the option to load 25 or 50 more like it did before. it was fine before it would load all i want. now it's change.
    i tryed deleting the account from my phone and setting it up again but nothing.
    Please someone help me out? thanks

    Errrr I would give up AOL, if I were you.
    When people send me FWDs or a long chain-list type of FWD, the AOL stuff comes out as MIME and will not display on the iPhone.
    And I don't think Apple will fix that, since they don't really talk about full support for AOL, just Yahoo and Gmail -
    so I would make the switch, if I were you.

  • Webpage do not load completely

    Many web pages do not load completely like facebook, rds.ca etc...
    What can I do to correct this?
    Thanks

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select “Help” from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
    While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
    As Guest, launch Safari and test. Same problem?
    After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created as Guest will be deleted automatically when you log out.
