IMovie 6 to iDVD, want to burn on another machine

I have a new intel MAC dual core machine running iLife 6, but no DVD burner.
I have an older MAC with ilife 5 that has a DVD burner. I have made a rather long movie ~ 2 hrs, that I want to burn to a DVD. Question, is there some way I can save the movie on the new machine as some sort of exportable file that I can copy to the old machine have it burn it to a DVD?

Yes you can move the DVD file to another computer in order to burn it as a DVD. In order to do this you must first go under the file menu at the top, then go down to where it says "save as Disc Image". This will save your DVD as a file that can be moved from one computer to the other. Once you have the file on your other computer, use the Disk Utility program that should be located in the Utility folder in applications. You then mount the Disc Image of the DVD and burn it to a DVD

I just finished creating a movie using IMovie and want to burn it to a DVD and loop it.  Since I just purchased this mac it looks like they no longer include IDVD.  Is there something out there to help me do this.  I am new to MAC and any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

There is free open source software called Burn that will burn DVDs. Here is a link.
If you wish to pay for software, there are many, including TOAST TITANIUM from Roxio. Apple's retail copy of iLife 11, and Apple's Compressor.
Of these, I would say that iDVD is known for being able to create very professional looking DVDs with intros, menus, lots of interesting templates.
Toast is much simpler and the menus and templates are more plain.
Compressor is a professional tool that does a lot more than make DVDs. Don't expect much in the way of menus or templates.
Burn, I have never tried, since I have iDVD and Toast for those ocasions when I need to burn a DVD. However, since it is free, I think it is worth a try.
Each software package is a little different, but in general, in iMovie, you can use the SHARE menu to SHARE/MOVIE in Large size. Save the movie to your desktop or someplace you can easily find it. Then drag it into the tool of your choice. You can alsouse SHARE/MEDIA BROWSER/LARGE if you have iDVD or Toast.

  • I have created an iMovie file and have created an iDVD menu file. I am now ready to burn a DVD. But my superdirve is broken. If I put my files on a mac without iMovie or iDVD, can I burn my DVD with Toast 11?

I have created an iMovie file and have created an iDVD menu file. I am now ready to burn a DVD. But my superdirve is broken. If I put my files on a mac without iMovie or iDVD, can I still burn my DVD with Toast 11?

    no need for Toast ..
tell iDVD to create a disk-image
    transfer dmg to othe Mac
launch the Disk Utility, burn that dmg .......

  • Can't import to iMovie when iDVD is encoding/burning...Any Ideas?

When I am burning/encoding in iDVD, iMovie will not let me import any video. I am connected, via firewire, to a Sony VX2000 camera, and I have had the problem ever since I upgraded to the newest iDVD and iMovie software. It says Camera Disconnected or Off, and it disables the import button.
    Any ideas?

When I am burning/encoding in iDVD, iMovie will not
    let me import any video.
I guess I'M not surprised! During burning/encoding in iDVD there is a whole lot of computing and disk access going on. Our normal advice in the past has been to simply walk away and stop using your computer during burning/encoding. I CERTAINLY wouldn't try to import video from a camera.
Creating DVDs requires lots of patience (and free hard disk space).

  • Jagged font problem - iMovie to iDVD to then burn a DVD

    I have iMovie 11 - v 9.0.2 and iDVD 7.1.1.
I've imported photos and audio into iMovie to create a slideshow with transitions.  All works well there.
When I then export to iDVD and preview it on screen, everything looks great.
But when I burn to DVD and play in a DVD player, the fonts look terrible - so they are not rendering properly.
Font I am using is Coolvetica.  It was in the iDVD package.  I opened up the iDVD package and copied the font into Fontbook to make it available in iMovie.
Any advice on what I'm doing wrong?
    neilc

Thanks. That solved the font problem.
However, the overall quality of my DVD when display on a 42 inch plasma HDTV is poor---looks like a photo that has been copied on a color copier--too contrasty and with color shifting to yellow.  I have created three new projects from the original video, which is 47 minutes long, one DVD in each of Best Performance, High Quality and Professional Quality. The Best Performance is terrible.  However, neither the High or the Professional quality is much better, other than the fonts looking better.  Both formats result in high contrast poor images and color shift to yellow.
I have shared the iMovie in the Media Browser in HD 1080 and in 720.
I noticed that all the DVDs didn't seen to write more than about 1/2 inch on the outside edge of the DVD. The size of the TS-Video folder on the High and Professional DVDs take up only 2.82 gig.  It seems that iDVD is compressing the video more than necessary, leaving a lot of unused space on a standard 4.7 gig DVD.
Interestingly, DVD's made of much shorter videos and produced in the Best Performance mode on iDVD look very good when played on the Plasma TV.
Both the High and the Professional DVDs look very good on my McBook Pro and MacMini screens.
Given the restriction of a standard DVD player (480p) I wonder if I should share the movie in this format.

  • My iMac wants to connect to another machine on startup

    Hi All,
I purchased a new iMac a few weeks ago and went through the Migration Assistant to move stuff from my old G5. I did it via the ethernet method since I didn't have a fw800/400 cable to connect the 2 machines.  There was a slight hiccup in that it didn't want to transfer the applications just all of my other data.  I didn't mind and went forward.  Now the problem, during the first few days of usage I kept filesharing on the G5 turned on so I could grab various things from its 2nd internal HD.  At some point I switched off filesharing on the G5.  Now I get error messages (currently during startup) that the machine (the G5) couldn't be found and that I should check my network, etc.  For a while I attributed this to the ftp application Transmit.  I had a long email thread with the developer because it seemed that every time I started Transmit that warning would come up.  He thought it might have been an alias in my Sites folder that Transmit was trying to resolve, but that didn't seem to be the case. As part of the troubleshooting process I set Transmits default folder to be a random folder on an attached USB Drive.  So that seemed to stop that warning from happening when I launched Transmit.  However during the startup process of the iMac I was getting the error. It seemed to be happening when Transmit's menu bar icon was loading.  So I turned off the menu bar feature.  Unfortunately the warning is still coming up.  So now I am trying to figure out what process is looking for the old G5.
I looked in my Console to see if anything stood out. (I've pasted a snippet below). I see a line item for rpc.statd that references the ip address of the G5, so that looks like something.  But I also see that it is after the line where iClip loads.  When the machine is booting up I get the error message.  When I click 'OK', then the rest of the startup process continues and iClip loads after that.  So not sure what that means.
If anyone has any other methods for trying to figure out what is trying to contact the G5 I would greatly appreciate it.  Its really getting annoying now.
    Thank You,
    Chris

    Hi Don,
I thought for a minute I might have found it.  I had a saved search in the "Search For" section that referred to the hard drive on the G5.  But unfortunately, removing it didn't prevent the error from showing during startup.  If it helps I've attached a screenshot of the error message.
    Thanks,

  • IMovie to iDVD to burn

I created an iMovie and now want to burn it to DVD. I use the "share" menu option in iMovie and select iDVD and that brings up iDVD. iDVD seems to force me to have one of its themes at the begining of the burned movie. So I take it I have to select an iDVD theme, set it up (some have drop zones and others do not) and then create a disk image from the iDVD File menu. Then use Disk Utility to burn the DVD. Is that procedure correct?
What if I don't want to add an iDVD theme to the iMovie at all?
I'm new to this (my first movie) and am just trying to figure this all out!
I am using iMovie and iDVD 6 plus and OS 10.4.6

Under the file menu in iMovie or in iDVD? I have made 12 minute movie in iMovie. I have done this before and exported to iDVD when I wanted to use themes (I just read that importing from iDVD is better, so I'll do that from now on). However, this time, I will be using my movie in a loop. It will continue to play at our school auction all evening, so I will want it to repeat when it comes to the end. I think that if I put in themes, I will have to push play in order to make it begin again each time. I'm hoping that if I burn a DVD straight from the iMovie, I can make it repeat using the settings on the television automatically, but I'm having trouble following these instructions. I don't see the "Onestep DVD from Movie" under my file menu. I see that it iDVD can make a movie directly from my video camera - is that what you were talking about? I'd love to know if it's possible to burn a DVD without any themes. Thanks in advance for any help!

  • Sectioning videos using iMovie and iDVD

I did my first conversion of some video from Mini-DV to DVD using my new iMac yesterday. I read the "Getting Started" tutorials for iMovie and iDVD and successfully burned a DVD. It came out good in the end, but I'm not sure I did things the best way. I wanted to section the video so when I watch the DVD I can click on a "button" from the menu for whatever section I want. So, I transferred all the video from the camcorder to iMac. That was easy. Then, I went into iMovie and marked off the sections of the video I wanted as "favorites" and it put a green line above it, then I selected the option for it to only display the favorites. So, it was easy to edit out the bad parts. Then, I dragged it all from the Event Library to the Project Library. I went to Share-Media Browser and clicked on Publish. Then, I went into iDVD and was able to get the video into it. But, I couldn't get it into sections like I wanted.
So, I went back into iMovie and did a File-Duplicate Project and named it with a "-1" at the end. Then, in the Event Library I selected the first section of the video (so it had the yellow boarder around it) then dragged it to the Project Library. Then, I did a Share-Media Brower and clicked on Publish. I went back to the original and did a File-Duplicate Project and named it with a "-2" at the end, and repeated the whole thing for the next section. I did this for each section, "-3", "-4", etc. Then, I went into iDVD and was able to get the video into sections like I wanted. I renamed the "-1", "-2" stuff to what I wanted and burned the DVD.
Did I do this right or did I do this the hard way? I have iMovie '08 7.0 (471) and iDVD '08 7.0 (1068).
Someone told me that the "sections" I'm referring to are called "chapters". I did a search for chapters and the only reference I can find is in the "iMovie '08 Getting Started" document where it says "Click Import. You can also import video from a project created in iMovie HD. … All chapter markers are also lost".

I would consider the usage of iMHD6 plus a slightly different 'structure' of workflow and final DVD ...
'problem' with Chapters, as they are implemented in iDVD, is, that they really functioning just as a bookmark... you jump directly to some specific position in timeline.. but then, the disk play 'til the end of a movie... (showing the next and the next and... chapters...)
iDVD allows sub-menus, think of it as 'Folders' ... which also could keep Folders..
create a movie, showing the whole program/dance...
now, select (in iMHD6) the few clips which show 'Right Hand Pass'
in the Export/Quicktime/Full Quality dialog of iMHD6, check the box 'selected clips only' ...
now, you get a/many .movs on your harddrive, with all the individual segments ...
due to lossless export, you can import that short clips into new iM projects and add content.. a slow-mo, a chart, some narration, recordings of other dancers doing the same 'move' etc ...
in IDVD, switch to 'map view' .. illustrated how-to here:
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#idvd-create-67
now, create a structure for YOUR how-to... on top should be a button for the movie which shows the whole dance; create a sub-menu containing other sub-menus for 'spins', 'turns', 'passes' (= I have NO idea of Square Dance ); inside each sub-menu item (which is a 'Folder'), you place the concerning clip(s) (drag'n drop/choose form Media) ...
structured that way, you are allowed to add much more than just a chapter = a part of your movie; editing a 'standalone' clip of your section allows to 'process' that part, as mentioned above: you can repeat it, you can add slowmos, you can add stills/charts/paintings, explaining specificly that 'move', add a narrated and a no-audio version, whatever ... there's a nice plug-in from geethree.com for iMHD6, *Slick 6* (click here), called 'White Board', which allows drawings on videos..
when the 'chapter', which is now a clip/movie on its own, is finished, the dvd will jump back to the menu/submenu... and the viewer is allowed to watch it again, choosing the next one, a different one, or jumping to 'top level' to choose a different section or watching the whole dance...
only limitation: all movies added together should stay under 120min..

  • I recently upgraded my Macbook pro with a new Hard Drive.  I then transferred the data using Time Machine.  Now when I want to backup using Time Machine again, it won't do it as it did before to the same external HD.  How can I get it to reconnect?

Purchased a new, larger solid state drive to replace my old drive.  I installed OSX then I had Time Machine do it's magic.
Now when I want to do a backup using Time Machine, it tells me that the external HD is full.  When I did so prior to upgrade, it would erase old backups and then do a new backup.
Please help.  I am worried about losing files, and am tired of seeing the "Time Machine hasn't backed up in xxx days" Error Message.

Here are dedicated discussion forums for iMovie and iDVD, where you might more likely find help.

Share your movie to the Media Browser. Then, in iDVD, drag your movie in from the Media Browser at the bottom right.
THe Share to iDVD option is only activated if your source material is DV or AVCHD.

A few months ago, I purchased a new iMac. I recently created a movie using iMovie. Then I found out that iDVD is not included. So I have the problem that I want to burn a movie that I can play on my DVD player and watch on a television. I rang Applecare and was told that I need a program called BURN.
Is this correct? I can export the movie from iMovie in a m4v format, but I think I need to convert this to iso format before I can burn the disc.
I know there are programs like TOAST that will do this, but it is expensive.
I would be very grateful for any assistance.

Burn will not do what you want, and there is no real substutute for iDVD.
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac?
Apple insists that the entire world has access to fast broadband (and are prepared to pay for the considerable bandwidth usage) and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud, YouTube, Facebook, whatever) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that in reality not all users do, has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. Stating that they would return their brand new Mac unless they received a copy of iDVD worked for some, but that is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple.
Also, you can complain bitterly via Apple’s Feedback link, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between burning DVDs and distributing home movies by other means. You may feel that Apple should not dictate how you destribute family videos or photos to distant relatives and friends, and should not assume that every user is prepared to pay for the excessive bandwidth usage charged by ISPs for huge downloads from the App Store:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that came with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or that comes with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD 7, i.e. iLife version 9 onwards. You should also do this if you plan to buy a new Mac anytime soon, as stocks of iLife that include iDVD will not be available for ever.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast, which is the best software for burning anything but again does not offer the flexibility of iDVD.
And if you think Microsoft are any better, their new Windows 8 operating system will not play DVDs, or burn them, unless customers buy an extra upgrade, the company has announced:  http://www.gizmag.com/windows-8-no-dvd-playback/22443/
In other words, computer manufacturers have declared optical media as dead, long before consumers are ready to stop using them, which is fine as long as they offered us a choice, but they won’t even do that. Flexibility and intuitive use of a computer seems to be a thing of the past.

  • HT4997 I want to burn a movie to a dvd with iMovie but idvd doesn't show up in the "share" menu--why?  My SuperDrive indicates that my DVD+R can be written to.  Please Help.

I just spent a week creating an iMovie and wanted to burn it to a DVD.  The instruction tutorial said to go to the "Share" menu and select "iDVD", however there is no "iDVD" listed in that memu.  I checked to see that my DVD+R was writeable in my SuperDrive--it is?  Why doesn't "idvd" show in the "share" menu?  Please help, thank you.  Fustrated Mark.

I may have found a way around this issue. I have the old style mouse with a wired usb connection. I've learned from other discussions that by holding down the 'Control' key and pressing the mouse button on an Apple a menu similar to the right-click menu of a PC will appear. When I tried this from the 'Project Library' on iMovie on my iMAC, a menu appears that DOES contain the export to iDVD choice. This choice is still not visible from the 'Share' menu in the menubar. This appears to be some glitch in the Apple software, but my computer is currently formulating the iMovie into the iDVD format. I have my fingers crossed.

  • Exporting IMovie to Flash Drive vie IDVD for Burning on Another Computer

I have made a slide show in IMovie and since my computer can't burn a DVD, I would now like to export the IMovie to IDVD and then onto a flash drive so that I am able to burn on another computer (probably a PC). Which is the best format to put the movie in for export via flash drive and how can I create the appropriate file after transfering the IMovie to IDVD. There didn't seem to be an export or share option for me on IDVD. If someone could help with the steps after sending the IMovie to IDVD. Thank you.

to finish editting it onto another computer*

  • Sound problems when burning a film made in iMovie in iDVD

    PLEASE HELP!!!
I have upgraded to iLife 09 and for all the bad that people have to say, I actually like it a lot. Anyway, it gave me the encouragement I needed to play with some old home movies I had stored with the aim of producing DVDs to give to my friends, and hopefully showing off the slick production values I have come up with.
So after spending a week getting to grips with iMovie and editing an old holiday film with all the cuts, transitions, chapter markers and music etc that I wanted, I ended up with an hour long movie that I was happy with.
Then to iDVD. After trying out all sorts of ways to go from iMovie to iDVD to ensure the best quality, I have finally given up trying to replicate the on screen quality of the movie in iMovie with the finished DVD, and just opted for the easy to use 'share to iDVD' option. The quality is not great, but then the footage is old anyway so not too much of an issue.
Then I spend another few days playing with and learning iDVD and again end up with a finished product that I am happy with, with nice looking menu's and a slideshow etc.
So I come to burn the final DVD, for which I pick the 'Professional burn' option which takes 4 hours but I am happy to wait if it means the best quality possible, and my DVD is done.
I then play the DVD to discover my problem - the sound in the movie is not right. To explain further, in my movie I have reduced the sound of some of the film clips to nothing and placed music over the top. When played and previewed in iMovie it works fine - the music plays and the sound that is attached the the video does not. When previewed in iDVD it works fine - just as I had edited it in iMovie. But then when I burn the DVD, some of these sounds are present again which completely wastes all my hard work at the editing stage.
I have searched and searched for help on this but am unable to find any.
Sorry for the very long description and story behind my issue, but it is massively frustrating. Basically, at some point during the 'burn to DVD' stage in iDVD it decides to completely ignore most of the sound edits I have made on the movie in iMovie.
If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance.

Further to this, I have just sat and watched the whole final DVD on my TV and it would seem to be that the sound issues may be something to so with the transitions added in iMovie. Some of the sounds have even slipped in time! I get the sound from the next clip coming in early and then a blank patch of sound where it should be. All of this is always just before an iMovie transition.
