IMovie09 - cool features, horrible video output - very disappointed.

I ran out the other day and bought iLife09, ONLY to get iMovie09. I wanted to use the stabilization feature of it, and after I saw some of the pretty cool new features (map, globe, etc), I loved it. Spent 16 hours over 2 days building a nice cool 45 min video. All video came off my Canon HV20 via firewire.
The tapes were previously made on an DV camera so they weren't high def. But they should have looked pretty good on output anyway.
I used iMovie to compose the movie, then rendered and burned it with iDVD09. I chose the highest resolution for import of the tape, and highest quality for output of the burn.
What a major disappointment. If someone has some suggestions for me other than 1) use iMovie06 or 2) use Final Cut Express, I'd love to hear them.
Yesterday I reinstalled FCE 4.0 and did a sample 10 min video with that, and rendered and burned it with iDVD09. What a difference. Much better quality. However, I have a steep learning curve to subject myself to with FCE (which it appears I'm going to have to pay).
But I bought iLife09 with the hopes of using all these cool new whizbang features and doing some great videos. Major downer.
So, hit me with suggestions. Tell me it's pilot error and blame it on my ignorance. I can take it.. I welcome it - if it solves my quality problems using iMovie09.
I'm open to any suggestions. Hearing none in the near future, I will start relearning FCE, and put iMovie (and iLife) back in it's box.
Signed,
Sad in Seattle.

I am also quite disappointed, an i can't believe that Apple is not aware of this. Seems to be another stupid decision to cripple the software to push the customer into a certain direction.
There are millions of DV cameras out there and people have important memories on Dv tapes, but Apple somehow decides to neglect them.
Doing easy home videos with an Apple? Forget it, you have to buy new cameras, convert your tapes with other software.
Sorry for being rude.

  • Horrible video output quality with Premiere Pro CS4 + Adobe Media Encoder

I am trying to make some changes to a DV format file, and output as the same DV format. When the video is brought into Premiere, it looks crisp in the left-hand video box. But, when playing it on the right window and when encoding it, it comes out as a mess with substantial compression artifacts.
What confuses me is, I have experimented with a lot of codecs--even uncompressed AVI. There is no change in the video resolution--source is 720x480, as is output. I am keeping all the pixel aspect ratios the same as the source footage.
What is creating this distortion? I have no scaling of the video whatsoever in the sequence...
Is there some compression box I'm not seeing here?
I've attached a screenshot of a still from the video. As you can see, substantial artifacting around the lettering, making the text unreadable.

Some suggestions and answer at least the 16 questions at the end of the Wiki article.

  • TV (video) output from new nano looks very good!

Just a comment for those who may be wondering how the video quality on the new iPod nano looks when output to a TV. I have one of the old iPod AV docks with the s-video port and the new nano seems to work fine with that combination (using a standard s-video cable between the dock and the TV). Thus far I'm really impressed with the video quality, I can't see a single problem, the color is good, the quality and sharpness is as good as I've seen from any iTunes Store content, and as far as I can tell the frame rate is fine (no stuttering, skipped frames, or problems with audio sync). I'm amazed that such high quality video can come from such a small device. If it continues to look this good (after viewing more content and after more testing) then I think Apple may have "hit one out of the park." This thing could turn out to be the most popular iPod yet (if you have any interested in video and still want a small device).

I just found out that the video out (TV) on the new nano supports video playlists so you can create playlists for back-to-back display on the TV. Not even the AppleTV will do that (even though the latter has been a highly requested feature for the AppleTV since day one). In fact, if you can do without the on-TV menus you may find that the nano is a better video output device than is the AppleTV (that is, the menus system on the nano doesn't appear on the TV output).
Also, I just competed a few hours of video playback to my big-screen TV from the nano and I'm still impressed. No video problems at all, looks very good considering the quality limitation from the content that is currently on the iTunes Store (limited to standard definition, no HD movies, HD TV, or HD music videos as yet).

  • Premiere CS4, NO hardware video output aceleration?

All Premieres for Windows, from early ones up to CS3 were supporting hardware acceleration in "video space" for output via OVERLAY or DIRECTDRAW (VMR that is just a bit slower). That allowed to archive very low CPU utilization, very FAST video frame draw and refresh, very clean colours... And possibility to mirror on full-screen devices (e.g. TV, calibrated monitors etc.)
Today I'm testing new CS4(with updates)... And they removed this so essential feature!
WHY!? How could they stop supporting Overlay ?
Do they, in Adobe, think that everybody in industry are so crazy to move to Vista that has no 2D video acceleration?
Do they think it is very funny to catch dropped frames and frame disruptions during playback?
I have not very slow station on C2Q9650 with tons of hard drives and accelerated by nVidia that I love for good YUV overlay support, various outputs and easy colour setup...
And with CS4 I dropped on the level of 90th with buggy S3/Trident video and Pentium-Pro.. The performance so horribly degraded.
ADOBE! Come to senses, bring back 2D accelerated video output to Premiere Pro CS4 ! You are ruining whole experience!

Do you understand difference between 1) clip mixing/effect processing and 2)video overlay matrixing/up-downscaling in native accelerated YUV space?
Yes - CUDA is ideal for clip mixing and effect processing, predominately in RGB24+ spaces.
I personally use OGL accelerated FFT3D filtering via AVISYNTH. It unloads 30% of CPU time for other preprocessing code.
But this is NOT video output mixing/ fast DAC output!
It uses the same RGB GPU RAM space as conventional 2D/desktop graphics uses.
Overlay uses separate accelerated hardware block that works without double framebuffering for scaling, but scales on the fly.
Overlay works in native YUV colour space, what is much faster. And overlay multiplexes output to various display devices via hardware without penalty!
Actually, what was done is SOFTWARE rendering on GPU device. This is NOT hardware accelerated output!
Yes, you can buy a $3000 GPU and overtake $0.001 classic overlay accelerated chip block... with HUGE graphics board which needs regular maintenance!
(and still you'll get some frame phase dislocations on output device. Main DACs are not necessarily field/frame phase-locked as Overlay block)
Bye-Bye notebooks for "field operations"! Welcome oilcan for regular gpu-fan lubrication!

  • I am very disappointed in CFBuilder 2

I have been using CFBuilder since it first came out. I went through some of the early beta annoyances and even some of the situations where a new beta version came out and stopped the current one from working, effectively halting my production until it was fixed. That being said, I love CFBuilder and it has been a mostly positive experience. It has all of the good things about CFEclipse, with a lot of helpful enhancements.
When CFBuilder 2 came out, I was very excited to get my hands on it. I am sure I don't need to go into detail about how important a functional and feature rich IDE is to a developers day, so I am always looking forward to the latest and greatest. CFBuilder 2 falls short in so many ways and after talking many other developers, I realize that I am not the only one with that opinion. I am surprised that Adobe has produced such a bug ridden product.
Being a developer myself, I understand all to well the need to get a product released and making money, but this product is unusable and is making Adobe look bad. I talked to a number of developers at cf.Objective about this and I wasn't surprised that many of them shared my negative experience.
Because I have had issues upgrading from one version to the next in the past, it is my practice to install a fresh version, so there are less issues. I am running Windows 7, but I have talked to friends that are working on Macs and have experienced these problems as well. Here are just a few of my gripes:
    - In early versions of Builder and CFEclipse as well, syntax highlighting would occasionally break and would leave your code looking like it was in notepad. Sometimes it would repair itself after time, or you just needed to type something, or highlight code and it would correct itself. In later versions this got much better and all but disappeared. In CFBuilder 2 the problem is back and worse than it ever was. The only way I could fix it much of the time was to just close the file and reopen it.
    - In addition to the syntax highlighting breaking, it seems to hang much of the time. It actually crashed my editor a couple of times. Even when I set the setting to make it only refresh when you save, it still seemed to try to update anyway.
    - When going to a new line, for some reason it is inserting an extra tab. I see that there is some new code formatting functionality, and I tried to change this behavior, but I couldn't find a way. This is changed behavior from how it worked before and it is frustrating having to search for options just to have it work the way it was originally. I am not really sure who would want the extra tab anyway. It is a tab that doesn't follow the flow of your regular indentation.
    - The auto closing of tags doesn't seem to work properly anymore. I tried toggling the settings to see if that would help, but I wasn't able to get it working.
    - The previous version gave us some really cool hotkeys. CTRL+SHIFT+A to insert an abort, CTRL+SHIFT+D to insert a cfdump, C and CTRL+SHIFT+M to wrap code in a comment. In CFB2, all of those keys have been remapped by default... I understand that the functions are still there, but it doesn't make sense to me that they were moved.
Honestly, after fighting these issues for only a very short period of time, I got frustrated, uninstalled the app and went back to CFBuilder 1. It seems like this was a complete rewrite and wasn't very well tested. I realize that I could have been a little more detailed on the explanation of some of these issues, but I really don't have anymore time to waste on this unfinished product...
I am very disappointed that this was pushed out in such a non-functional state and I won't feel comfortable giving it another chance until I start hearing that things are vastly improved.
I realize that the tone of this is somewhat negative, but it comes from hours of frustration and wasted time. I only decided to post this after I spoke with a number of my peers that are equally disappointed. I hope this can serve as a nudge to improve the quality of future releases.
    Jeff

    --^ everything this guy says.
It's such a shame to see some people want always to suggest that because something doesn't work for them (and even some of their peers) that therefore it must be true for everyone, and that the product and team are shoddy. We hear the same of CF sometimes, and since I do CF server (and sometimes CFBuilder) troubleshooting for a living, I can affirm that rarely if ever is the problem (or rarely are "all the problems" someone experiences) really due to inferiority of the product.
There's usually an explanation in there somewhere, for why what fails miserably for someone does seem to work just fine for others. Often, it seems to have to do with some configuration issue.
In CFB, particularly, it's indeed important to get many config things right: some features won't work unless a file is opened within a project, and further some will only work if the file is opened in a project that is connected to a server. Then, too, you may connect a project to a server, but not do it right, or have something that's just not working (like connecting to a remote server and specifying the JNDI port but it's not the one on which the connected CF server is listening on, or you provide the RDS password but RDS is not enabled on the server, or the ports for either are blocked, and so on.)
I will grant that someone will see that and say, "well see, that's what I mean: you have to be a bloody technician to get it all working". Well, yes, to a degree. CFB tries to do a LOT for you. It isn't "just an editor" (but most here know that), but it's more than even most Eclipse plugins--they (nearly all) work with source code alone. CFB is working with both source code and the configuration of stuff on a back-end server, such as what datasources exist (in CF), what components exist (on the CF server, as defined by CF admin mappings, custom tag paths, and the web server root), and so on.
It can't "just look at your code". It needs to do this back-end communication to bring all the hotness that it does. But if that connection doesn't work, then it can either fail (obviously or silently), or perform poorly.
So yes, it's a shame when someone's configuration gets in the way and makes it seem that CFB sucks. But the reason you hear from others "no it doesn't" is just that either they don't have the same setup, or don't have the same configuration challenges, or they have solved them, or whatever.
But please, I wish people would stop with the "it sucks" mantra, just because it doesn't work for them (and some of their peers).
Jason and I (and others, I'm sure) are at least here to say, "it doesn't suck for us".
That doesn't make you wrong. It just means that your assertion that it sucks in general (calling it " unfinished product...pushed out in such a non-functional state"). I realize that countering your point, I run the risk of your (and noraaron's) wrath. Please don't shoot us as the messengers. We're just offering a contrasting viewpoint.

  • Quicktime Video Output Components equivalent in QTKit?

I need to output video frames to external devices such as Firewire cameras and Digital Cinema Desktop. This used to be handled with Quicktime Video Output Components, but I'm not seeing an equivalent with QTKit. My application is 64-bit, so I cannot use Quicktime directly. Is this available in QTKit or another 64-bit compatible framework?

Benjamin: The Digital Cinema Desktop is a Final Cut feature, even if implemented as a Quicktime Video out component. As you can see (by the lack of options) is not really meant to be invoked from other applications which use standard Quicktime video out for external previews. That requires a device with a proper QT video out driver. You could use an inexpensive device, like a Blackmagic Intensity with an HDMI to DVI cable, to feed the second display.
Or you could just ask AE to play RAM previews at full screen, in which case you don't need to enable video previews at all. Together with the ability to take into account a calibrated display's profile, this should make for very high quality previewing on computer monitors.

I am very disappointed that I spent a lot of $$; now Apple wants me to spend $$ again to get a new one. As I mentioned, I am pretty upset. Does anyone know if there's a work around?

I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1.
    Identifying iPod models
    iPod touch (3rd generation)
iPod touch (3rd generation) features a 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display and 32 GB or 64 GB flash drive. You can browse the web with Safari and watch YouTube videos with Wi-Fi. You can also search, preview, and buy songs from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store on iPod touch.
The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.

  • Couldn't open Quicktime video output component.

I was able to find 2 other posts in regards to the error. The one didn't have enough information to be answered and the other had a link to an apple page that no longer exists. Sorry for the repeat but I can't seem to find an answer that applies to me.
The "After Effects warning: Couldn't open Quicktime video output component." message appears when I open AFX and is waiting for me when I come back to it from another program. In AFX's Preferences window under Video Preview I have set my Output Device to Digital Cinema Desktop. No options ever show up in the Output Model drop down. As you can probably guess I am trying to get my second display to preview the composition full screen.
For other reasons, I just had to reinstall OSX (10.5.7). Then I installed Adobe Production Premium CS3 and the Final Cut Suite HD.
My computer is a 4 core Mac Pro with 7GB of memory. I don't have any Matrox hardware. Actually I don't have anything except the 2 DVI monitors, battery backup, analog speakers, mouse and keyboard plugged into the computer.
I have held down apple + option + shift while starting up AFX to reset the Preferences as well as replaced the DesktopVideoOut.component file with one from another working computer in the /Library/Quicktime folder finally I have tried Repairing Disk Permissions.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • A very disappointed windows convert

Being a Windows based Graphic Designer (shock!!) I finally took the plunge and bought a Macbook Pro.
The Bootcamp was the deciding factor for me (I thought the transition would be painless). However, so far I have been very disappointed, I cannot seem to find any vector drawing, photo retouching or video editing software that justifies the switch, the choice of software is very limited and when I have found something to try, NOTHING seems to work on the Intel Macs, even Photoshop!!!?
Considering macs are de-facto for Graphic design, I am shocked...I am left with a very nice looking piece of kit that gets very hot, has a cool looking magnetic power adapter socket, a very slow and useless i-movie application (on paar with MS Movie maker) Itunes (available on XP), and a gimmicky Dock application which was ALSO available for windows anyway.
As for Bootcamp, I cannot tap the mouse track area to click like a mouse click, itunes crashes and XP seems more buggy (than usual)...
So all I’m left to do is use it for surfing the web!!..while I have temporarily gone back to using my trusty HP tablet PC.
Please tell I am missing something major here, and I have not just blown £1700.

First, never buy hardware. First you buy the software you need, then look for the hardware that runs the software. First rule of computer buying.
If you must use Window's software for your work, then why bother buying a Mac even if it can run Windows? Boot Camp is Beta software. No promise that it is fully functional or even fully reliable. If you expect everything to work under Boot Camp as though it were a true Window's machine, then you didn't read the caveats.
Photoshop works fine on Intel Macs, it's just slow because it is not a universal binary and must run through the Rosetta emulation. Nothing new here. These transitional concerns were addressed before the Intel Macs were ever released. Furthermore, Adobe has already announced they have no definitive time table for when their Mac software will be converted to universal binaries.
If you want high-end movie software buy Final Cut Pro. It seems to be satisfactory for Disney Studios and Pixar, so it should be adequate for your needs.
As for vector drawing tools there's Adobe Illustrator and VectorWorks. However, neither are universal binaries so they would run under Rosetta. EazyDraw is a universal binary, but I don't know if it meets your suitability standards.
There are literally dozens of photo touchup applications with varying degrees of ability. Seashore (http://seashore.sourceforge.net/universal.php) is a free opensource version of GIMP and is now available as a universl binary. It is Beta software. GIMP is also available with an universal binary application wrapper, but it will require installing the X11 subsystem to use with OS X.
You can find more Mac software at www.versiontracker.com or www.macupdate.com. For optimum performance on Intel Macs look for software that is provided as an universal binary or Intel-compatible.
Lastly, Yes, you are missing something. Next time do a little more research before you complain. And, next time you complain be more specific about what you need because that will make it easier for someone to better assist you. And, we all know what's available for Windows .... That's why most of us here own Macs.

I am a long-term user of Lightroom as a standalone product with a perpetual licence. As a retired person on limited income, it is very disappointing to me that Adobe have introduced the 'Creative Cloud' (CC) subscription service in order for me to be able to continue upgrading this excellent product. It will be for me too expensive at the minimum cost of £9 per month. The additional services that CC brings are personally of no relevance or usefulness. Adobe should be prepared to support existing users who are, like myself, non commercial, amateur photographers by giving them the simple opportunity to upgrade to Lightroom 6 as a standalone, perpetual licence product. As a member of a camera club I know my co-members who use Lightroom are equally disappointed by this move to a subscription-only service.

Other differences - with CC you get LrMobile/LrWeb and they throw in a free copy of Photoshop too.
Yes, but when I bought my standalone license and clicked on the "Download" button it took me to the LightroomCC page. The downloaded file is named Lightroom 6, but in the CC app the installed program is LightroomCC (2015).

Hello. I'm just another Creative sound card owner and I must say I really love it. My card is a Sound Blaster Audigy SE and well, it's an amazing card. I've been using Windows XP for a long time since I refused to switch to Vista (I hate Vista with a passion). Then I moved to Windows 7 and to my disappoint, I find that three of the features I use the most are missing in this version of Windows:
    ) Equalizer.
    2) Bass redirection.
    3) The "What U Hear" control.
I tried installing the latest drivers, even the beta ones and no luck. I could manage to get the first two working with unofficial drivers, but What U Hear is still missing. What can I do?

The security feature of switching off tabs bar is one of the reason I pick Mozilla. It is only one extra button to be able to switch it off. • As much as I love turn-by-turn directions, I'm very disappointed in the quality of map directions from Apple in iOS-6

I love the turn-by-turn directions.  But some of the mistakes the new iOS-6 maps (the Apple version that replaces the Google Maps app) - they're the sign of an immature product.  Are other people finding the same?
Examples of what I got int the Apple iOS-6 maps application:
    1) In Hood River, Oregon (with location awareness on), I searched for Tucker -- I was expecting to get Tucker County Park (3 miles away).  The results I got were Tucker, Georgia, Tuckers Rock, Bellingen NSW (Australia), Tucker Hills, Brooksville FL.   Totally useless.  I was looking for results near me, not world wide.   Google maps immediately found the one closest to me as the first result (the correct location, Tucker County Park).
    2) In Rockaway Beach, Oregon, I searched for directions to Nehalem Bay State Park campground.   The iPhone iOS-6 mapping app gave me directions to a location in Brighton, Oregon, across the bay from the state park - 9.5 miles short of the actual destination (you have to drive around the bay to get there).  The comment at the top of the map was "This route ends on the road nearest to the selected destination.".  Of course, Google maps got me all the way there, taking me the rest of the distance around the bay, through all the turns and intersections to get me to my destination.
Am I the only one thinking - cool product, but not yet ready for prime time?  What happened Apple?  This is very disappointing, and not up to snuff.

Apple is aware, and they have issued a statement to that effect.  They're working it.

  • IMac G5 iSight - Resolution problems when using s-video output.

    Good afternoon all.
I have an iMac G5 and the only video output it has is a mini VGA socket. I have used this with a mini VGA to S-Video converter cable from Apple and am getting some odd results.
The Mac is running Leopard 1.5.7 and I'm outputting to a fairly old Panasonic CRT TV.
The problem I find is that when I plug in my mini VGA adaptor to the Mac it reduces the resolution on the Mac screen down to 1024x768 (stretched). The TV outputted TV image looks great, but I can't seem to keep my native resolution of 1440x900 on the Mac display.
If I do go and change the resolution in "displays" in the sys' prefs' then it just seems to keep the 1024x768 resolution on the Mac but this time without stretching it.
Does anyone know how I can keep my Mac at its native resolution of 1440x900 while still outputting to s-video to the TV?
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you again in advance.
    Stuart

    Hi
I have the same config as you: I have been using it for years to view on my tv dvds or videos from the web.
To my knowledge there is no way to acheive what you wish: when you plug the adaptor in the mac adjust to your output source and its main display (the g5 display) will reflect that with the result that it becomes very difficult to use.
Maybe there is a way to try changing the resolution in a middlle"configuration" which would give an acceptable viewing on the tv as well as on the g5.
Personally I keep plugging and unplugging the adaptor as needed.

  • Satellite P300-13J - S-Video output shows no picture

    Hi,
I need a little help here.
I have P300D-13J and I bought it with OS Vista HP 32-bit. I have tested S-Video output few times after time I bought my computer and it worked fine,no problems.
    But,after a few months I needed S-Video output and I connected cable like any other time I did that(same cable,same TV),and it didn't worked!
I thought it was some software problem, and in that time my copy of Windows 7 HP came. I've installed Windows 7 HP 32-bit on my computer and everything is working super, but I still have the same problem with S-Video output. I need to say that with instalation of W7, I installed all newest drivers from Toshiba web page.
When I try to move screen on TV, I use FN+F5,and it has a button called TV. But if i chose TV,my FN shortcut key blocks and nothing happens.
When I go to Display Settings and connect TV on S-Video,I have second monitor (No.2) and it is called Non PnP Generic Monitor or something like that. I can not change any settings on that monitor, not even a resolution.
So,does anyone has this kind of problems or solution for this?

    Hey Stevan,
I had the same issue that I couldnt see a picture on my external monitor that was connected via S-Video cable. The solution for this problem was very easy: I had to change the TV-standard from NTSC to PAL!
Of course its depending on your country where you life but you can find this option in display driver options.
    Check this!!!
