Implement RAC on my laptop

Hi,
I have installed Oracle database 10g Rel2 on my laptop and using ASM for storage(no shared storage, just use some hidden parameters).
Now I want to implement RAC on my laptop.
Please guide me whether I can implement without using Vmware,Another node or shared storage. ( just for practical knowledge).
Regards,
Neeraj

Hi.
In order to install Oracle Clusterware the installer expects to see at least two unformatted partitions, used for the OCR location and the Voting Disk. Assuming you don't want to reformat your hard drive you will either have to use an external drive, or use VMware to fake this.
I suggest you consider the Laptop RAC solution used by Howard Rogers:

  • How to implement RAC with no shared storage available...

    Hello Guys,
I have installed, configured single node RAC R2 with 2 database instances on windows 2000 platform with the help of vmware software. Installation was successfull.
I just meet my boss to explain him my acheivements and to get permission to go for prodcution environment where we will be developing 3 nodes RAC on linux platform.
I asked him that we need a shared stroage system that can be achieved by SAN or NAS or firewire disks... but he refuses to buy any additioan hardware as we have already spend a lot on servers. He wants to me have another computer with a large size Hard Disk Drive to be used as shared storage.
I just want to know can we configure 3 nodes RAC using HDD of an other computer as sommon shared storage...
Please guide me. I really want to implement RAC in our production environment.
    Regards,
    Imran

Yeah, but would openfiler work? Has any one
implemented RAC using open filer or software
    configured shared storage.
Any other better solution as i have to implement it
in production environment and have to seek better
backup facilities. Are you looking for a production environment, or an evaluation environment?
For an evaluation environment OpenFiler works. I occasionally teach RAC classes using that. It works but it is not as fast or as robust as I'd like in production.
For a production environment, plan to pay some money. The least expensive commercial shared stored I have found is from NetApp - any NetApp F8xx or FAS2xx files with iSCSI or even NFS license will do for RAC.

  • Want to upgrade 8.1.5 database into 10.2.0.2 and implement RAC.

    Hi,
I have two different databases running on 8.1.5.0 and 8.1.7.4 and the size of databases are 110GB and 130GB.
Now we want to upgrade this database into 10.2.0.2 and implement RAC.
Could any one suggest the best way/document to upgrade database into 10g.
Existing Platform is Sun Solaris 5.8(32 bits)
New Platform is AIX 5.2(64 bits).
    Thanks

Since the database is being migrated from Solaris to AIX, you cannot physically copy the database to the new server. You can choose to use Oracle's export and import utilities. This depends on much downtime you can afford. You can also create a new database on the AIX server and use CTAS (create table as select) to bring over your tables. This requires some additional post-migration work on your part to re-create the indexes, constraints, default values, etc. Export/import will do most of this for you.
If you have the option to upgrade to Oracle 10gR2, another possibility is to upgrade your database on the Solaris server and use transportable tablespaces to create a new 10g database on the AIX server. Transportable tablespaces in 10gR2 allow you to migrate across operating systems. Be sure to review Oracle's certification matrix to ensure that you are installing Oracle database software on a certified platform.

  • How to implement RAC

I want to implement RAC. I have one server machine with oracle 8i server installed. Please some one guide me how to implement the concept of RAC, I would be thankful if you can provide step by step procedure for implementation of RAC.

This is a extensive subject.. no thread or discussion can complete the process. I would suggest you should start with Oracle documentation, the admin guides, installation guides etc and other documents you can find on OTN.
You should also consider joining the RAC SIG at www.oracleracsig.org and gain knowledge about the subject.
Once you have completed the basics and if you have questions feel free to post your questions and at which point you can get some help with answers or issues you may have encountered.

  • Oracle RAC implementation scenario

    Hello DB Experts,
I have got a very specific business scenario to be implemented.
Basically we need to implement 2 Node RAC infrastructure.
But in this on each node we have 2 oracle instances running.
Now is it possible to have one Instance running on Active / Active mode and another instance in Active / Passive mode.
First of all i want to know it is possible to implement RAC in this manner.
If yes, then for Active / Passive instance if Active instance goes down how to switch the traffic to the passive node? Or basically i want to know how do i make that passive node active?
Would really appreciate some quick response.
    Thanks,
    Darshan

Lets assume some better names for this discussion...
RAC Database MYDB (instance on node1 = MYDB1, instance on node2=MYDB2)
SI Database URDB (instance on node1 = URDB with active/passive on node2)
Can this be done? Yes. But why? You can use SERVICES to limit on which node your application is accessing.

  • RAC Implementation in Oracle 11g

How to implement RAC in oracle 11gR2? is there any documentaion or links to get more info on Oracle RAC

Other than the scant thousands of pages available through http://docs.oracle.com ?
You could also go to http://otn.oracle.com and
    1) Docs and white papers:
    - click on Database (under Products, left edge) to get to the Database information
    - then click on High Availability
    - then click on Real Application CLusters and look at the various whote papers and supplement info
    2) Example install articles
    - click on Articles (top menu)
    - search for DBA / RAC articles by people like Jeff Hunter

  • Oracle11gR2 SCAN IP address (RAC implementation)

    Hello
If you refer to [http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/rac.112/e10743/preparing.htm] (2 Day + Real Application Clusters Guide
11g Release 2) it has assigned three IP addresses for SCAN (while it uses two servers)
during installation it creates three more IP addresses on those two nodes and defines three SCAN_LISTENER for them (one of servers has two SCAN_LISTENER and another one has one SCAN_LISTENER)
My question is if we wanna implement RAC on more that two servers , do we need assign more than three IP addresses ? if yes what is rate of SCAN IP addresses number to server number ?
    thanks

You will always have three dedicated IPs for SCAN, regardless of the number of nodes in your cluster.

  • Restoration of ASM/RAC database to another clustered set of servers for DataGuard implementation

    Hi all,
I've been working with single instance Oracle DBs for several years and we're now looking into RAC. I'm trying to gather as much info as possible in areas I think may be challenging if/when we implement RAC.
Can someone please help me with some info with regards to the scenarion below:
Assuming I already have a 2 node RAC database running and I want to set-up a failover RAC database, would the following steps be correct(assuming 11g):
Configure hardware, networking and O/S for 2 node RAC cluster (I know there's a lot in this single line, but let's just assume that's all done)
    Configure disks for ASM
    Clusterware installation
    Oracle ASM software installation
Oracle11g software installation with RAC option
    Database creation
***I'm not sure of the steps after database creation:
Export primary database up to a specific SCN (data pump gives the ability to specify scn)
    Import into failover database
Switch on dataguard and sync failover starting from scn specified at export.
Please, help correct these steps and any useful link where this process is treated thoroughly would be highly appreciated.

This is a very high level overview of the steps, but here are some additions/amendments I can make:
    Clusterware installation
    Oracle ASM software installation
-- The above 2 steps are done at the same time. In 11g, the Oracle 11g Grid Infrastructure includes both the Clusterware and ASM installation and configuration.
Oracle11g software installation with RAC option
    Database creation
***I'm not sure of the steps after database creation:
Export primary database up to a specific SCN (data pump gives the ability to specify scn)
    Import into failover database
Switch on dataguard and sync failover starting from scn specified at export.
Will you be using Data Guard for a physical standby? If so, using RMAN would be the correct method in creating the standby database. The general steps would be:
    - Oracle 11g software installation
    - Backup Primary Database
    - Configure Data Guard Parameters on Primary
    - Duplicate Primary to Standby RAC using RMAN (can be done manually or through the RMAN DUPLICATE command)
    - Enable log transport from primary, enable managed recovery on standby, and verify log transport and apply is working as intended.
Again this is a very general overview on the entire process, there are other factors that you'll have to take into consideration when planning such a project:
    - Which protection mode will you be using? Maximum Performance, Availability, or Protection? The business' recovery goals and SLAs will be able to determine which mode you will choose.
    - Will the standby be used for reporting purposes?
    - Recommended to have your standby site have the same hardware configuration as the primary.
    - Do you have an EM site already set-up? Data Guard Broker should be considered in the configuration of the Data Guard environment.
This is just a few things quickly off the top of my head. What OS do you have/plan on using? I don't have the link handy on me at the moment, but the official Oracle documentation should provide detailed guidance.
    EDIT:
At a bare minimum, read the 2 Day RAC Guide. There is more detailed information in the RAC Admin and Deployment Guide, as well as the Data Guard Concepts and Admin Guide. Also here's a step-by-step guide provided by Oracle. You can also find several blogs that provide a more concise step-by-step guide, such as here, here, and here. RACSIG also has a number of very useful whitepapers, but something seems to be wrong with their search function and I can't link anything at the moment. However, I would highly recommend reading through the official documentation as this has more comprehensive information, especially if you are deploying on a production system.

    Oscar

  • ORACLE 12c RAC installation

    Hello ,
I'm trying to install oracle 12c cluster.
I have a question about OCR and VOTING disks
which Disk is shared and which one is local ?
if both of them are shared, which ASM DG is created by Grid installer ? OCR or Voting ! and how to store both of Voting and OCR on sperated ASM disk groups.
    regards , Dia

OCR and Voting disks are shared.
You may put them on a separate DG (my preferences) or on one DG with data.

Can you share me what are daily activities to monitor or manage a RAC environment?

I am applying new dba job online, and I encountered JD which says:

10g? This might not be a job worth pursuing. That's a personal decision for sure, but let me say that I would probably pass on this "opportunity" if the company is still using Oracle 10g RAC.
Can you share me what are daily activities to monitor or manage a RAC environment?
Same as the activities for a single-instance database. And use Enterprise Manager....
Can you share me docs & links on how to install 10g RAC on a laptop VM environment?
Do installing 10g and 11g have the same procedure?
Sorry, but I'll only provide for a more recent version. For installing Oracle 11g or 12c RAC in a VM environment, Google for "oracle 11g rac virtual box" and you should get plenty of help.
10g and 11g do not have the same identical procedures. Guess why.....they are completely different versions!!!! So you should refer to the 11g-specific documentation:

    Hi Monika,
which Windows Server 2008 R2 edition is required to install RAC - standard or enterprise (NOT database edition - windows server 2008 edition)?
If we want to implement RAC 11Gr2 Enterprise Edition does the operating system also has to be enterprise edition or is it possible to install RAC 11GR2 Enterprise Edition on Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition? All Oracle Database 11g Release 2 is supported on the following Windows Server 2008 R2 editions:
    Windows Web Server 2008 (x64)
    Windows Server 2008 Foundation (x64)
    Windows Server 2008 Standard (x64)

What Server Version is more suited for RAC Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008, and why?I recommend Windows 2008, because the system is newer and has a lot of features that do not exist in Windows 2003. Oracle 11.2 is certified in Windows 2008.
