Import freedesktop file associations in ROX? [SOLVED]

I've lately fallen in love with ROX-filer - it's fast, doesn't depend on HAL, and is generally very usable as a file manager and an app launcher. However, I find that I have to manually associate every filetype other than binary and .desktop with an application, which is rather annoying, especially considering that a lot of applications come with .desktop files that specify what they should open.
Is there any way to import applications' default "open with" settings to ROX so that, for instance, XArchiver automatically opens .zip archives by default?

Now solved... The solution is to install perl-file-mimeinfo, then set everything to open with xdg-open. Bam, fixed.

  • Importing freedesktop file associations into various file managers

I love light FMs that don't rely on HAL (or rather, don't rely on it AND don't make me mess around with XML files to get them working). But file associations in most of them are a pain.
    - ROX makes you set up associations one by one
    - So does tuxcmd, as far as I can tell
    - Emelfm2 comes with assocations, but doesn't pay attention to what you have installed
    - XFE is probably the best, it lets you associate various broad types of files (audio, video, etc.) with an application... But unusual filetypes still need to be associated manually.
My thought is: the .desktop files are already there, in /usr/share/applications. Can I import associations from those?
ROX I already know can do that, albeit in a kind of crippled fashion, with perl-mime-info. That doesn't seem to work for the other three though.
If I had to guess, I'd say XFE didn't support importing associations, since it makes things the least painful. Tuxcmd I'm not sure about, I'd think it would given that it starts out with all of two associations, generic file and generic directory...
Emelfm2 on the other hand appears to have some way of importing .desktop file info. However, the website is down and Google's cached version won't load, so that's all I know.
Does anyone know more about dealing with .desktop files in the above FMs?

You could take a look at mimeo (for opening files) and mimeman (for managing associations).
Mimeman lets you set associations (including defaults) using globbing and regexes so you can avoid most manual work. Mimeo respects associations set by mimeman as well as those in .desktop files. If you can get your file manager to use mimeo for everything then you should be able to get consistent behavior.
Mimeo also supports an arbitrary association list that is based on argument strings rather than mimetypes, which allows it to open e.g. URLs.

I'm not sure if the culprit is today's update, but I am having problems importing video files in Kdenlive and OpenShot. When I try to import .MTS / .MKV / .MP4 video files, both programs immediately cease to work.
    For example - Mediainfo:

    Hi
The value of the Channel Strip volume etc is not stored within the C Strip setting, as you have discovered.
If you really wanted, you could add a Gain plug to the strip, with it set to give the correct output level with the Fader set to 0
(Or just set the fader manually in MS)

    haben
From looking at the specifications of your camera (SJCam 4000), we know already what video compression your camera is using. It is H.264.
A H.264.mov file should be supported by Premiere Elements 11. On what computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 11 running?
Do you have the latest version of QuickTime installed on your computer? And, are you running QuickTime and Premiere Elements 11 from a
User Account with administrative privileges? Please go to Premiere Elements 11 Publish+Share/Computer/QuickTime to confirm that you find
presets there for the QuickTime choice there.
What are the properties of these H.264.mov files - is it 1080p30 (1920 x 1080p30)  or something else? Do you know if this camera is recording with a variable or
    a constant frame rate?
Please review and consider and then we will decide what next.
    Thank you.

  • [SOLVED] LXQt: Black Background and File Associations Ingored

    Hi,
I switched from Razor-qt 0.5 to LXQt 0.7 (both from AUR) recently, and I encountered two problems:
    1. After login, there is only a black background and no right-click context menu works on the desktop (see linked screenshot below).
    2. "Removable media/devices manager" opens mounted filesystems with filesight instead of dolphin.
    http://i62.tinypic.com/abt56s.png
Both issues worked fine in Razor-qt 0.5. I guess the black background problem relates to the lxqt-session-git package. LXQt 0.7 ships an own file associations dialog. I changed the default application of MIME type "directory" and "mount point" to dolphin, but obviously it is ignored. Usually, I manage MIME types with KDE's setting control panel. There, MIME types "directory" and "mount point" are associated with dolphin.
Maybe, anybody has a clue how to narrow down the problem.
    Thanks.

    Thanks, Chazza.
Package pcmanfm-qt-git solved the issue with the black background.
However, "Device manager" still ignores the MIME type assocations, even when creating a section for removed associations in ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list (like described in the wiki):
    [Removed Associations]
    inode/directory=filelight.desktop
    inode/mount-point=filelight.desktop
I will investigate this problem further when I have enough time (maybe LXQt uses another MIME type for mounted devices). Nevertheless, I mark this thread as SOLVED.

I have just installed Xnview with Crossover office and I planned to use it as default image viewer. I have currently kdemod installed.
When I try to change the file association in kcontrol the update is not saved. If I choose "open with" in krusader it doesn't show xnview in the menu. If I force the image to open with xnview it does open.
This lack of updating is only happening with this case as I just changed the directory file association to krusader and it stuck
The updating for xnview doesn't work even if I run kcontrol as root
    any idea?

the problem is that I am running arch64 and xnview is not compatible :-(
anyway I think I found at least part of the problem
in KDE control center under "File Associations" it is not enough soemtimes to just add an applicatioon to the list "Application preference order". The reason is that sometimes, for some reason, that application you want to use is not associated with specific file types in the MIME catalog
what needs to be done thus is
    1) add the application you want to the list of "Application preference order"
    2) select the entry in the list
    3) click on Edit
    4) check on the third tab called "Application"
    5) see the list below of "Supported File Types"
    6) add all the file types that you want associated with that application
    7) apply
    8) go back to the main file association menu and check all the file types you have associated and verify that your application is listed in the list of preferred application
    9) now if you want you can change the order in the "Application preference order"
I found this to work in terms of getting your application to remain in the list "Application preference order". The problem still sometimes is that the specific order in which you put your application might not remain saved after you click on Apply
    Cheers

  • Pdf files associations... how can I change them? [SOLVED]

Basically when I double-click a pdf file from nautilus, gimp opens.  I have the gnome-extra packages installed (document viewer for exmaple reads pdf files, no), but I have no idea how to reset the file association from gimp to document viewer.  Thanks!

If not, some current gnome user might be better able to assist you. Sorry.

    Right-click the file>properties>Open With Tab

Isn't that exactly what I had suggested in my first post in the thread??

that's an excellent question. I always wanted to know where those file associations are stored per user... system-wide, I guess nautilus takes a peek at /opt/gnome/share/mime* and takes the latest | lexicographically sorted registered handler by default.
this is one thing gnome really lacks: a central place to modify this (like in kde).
you should also make sure shared-mime-info package is installed.
EDIT: found associations at last (not that I really searched before)
    look in ~/.local/share/applications/defaults.list
    I also found this interesting read: http://www.amitysolutions.com.au/docume … chnote.pdf
it lists that per user mime types are stored in .local/share/mime* folders
EDIT 2: I took some time to read the error message, and it says that the extension and the mime type detected from file contents do not match. out of the blue, try to rename file with .jpg extension with .jpeg extension.

  • GNOME and KDE file associations

    Hi,
I like to use KDE and GNOME, alternating between them. Sounds crazy, but I like both. Please, let's avoid the "GNOME vs. KDE" discussion, right?
My problem is: I like to use different file associations when I'm using GNOME or KDE. For example, I'd like to associate text files with gedit in GNOME and with Kate in KDE. But if I associate text files to gedit in GNOME, when I run KDE and open a text file it opens gedit. If I associate them with Kate in KDE, when I'm using GNOME it'll use Kate as its text editor.
Some time ago I could have both desktop environments without this mess. Can I have this behaviour back?

Yeah, I got tired of Evolution not knowing about opening *.docs in openoffice.  After several hours of research, the key is the /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache,  /opt/gnome/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache, and the MimeType fields in the *.desktop files.  The mimeinfo.cache in /usr was empty and the /opt one had gthumb and other apps but no OO:
    [MIME Cache]
    application/x-gnome-stones=gnome-stones.desktop
    image/jpeg=gthumb.desktop
    application/postscript=ggv.desktop
    ...snip...
That's a lot of blather to say that the fix for Evolution/OpenOffice was to add the proper MimeType entry to /usr/share/applications/ooo645writer.desktop:
    MimeType=application/vnd.ms-word;application/msword
and then run "update-desktop-database".  Problem solved.
Another problem is that within Evolution it says an attached doc is a "application/msword" and not a "Microsoft Word Document".  Unfortunately this is because freedesktop.org decided to use application/vnd.ms-word instead of application/msword like the rest of the world.  If you check the vnd.ms-word entry in /usr/share/mime/packages/freedesktop.org.xml it defines an alias msword but the new mime system doesn't appear to recognize aliases yet.  The solution I used was to rename the entry to msword.  Another possible solution might be to remove the msword alias from the vnd.ms-word entry and create a new msword entry based on the vnd.ms-word one.  Then run "update-mime-database /usr/share/mime".  Hope that made sense.
I think the defaults.list is part of the previous GNOME MIME setup cause I don't have one and I'm not experiencing any problems.  For other apps check for the associations in the mimeinfo.cache's and if missing add the MimeType's to the app's *.desktop.

  • Default file associations in linux?

    Hi,
I quit using KDE and among other glitches, most of my programs have lost their knowledge of file associations or have very odd ideas about them. For example, opera thinks that gimp is the default program for pdf files on my machine. Thunderbird has forgotten all the associations except the ones I've set in thunderbird itself, and if I remember it right, some KDE app was always popping up suggesting a file type. (I think it was kmfclient...)
Anyways, isn't there a way to manage file types on a lower level? I've been reading that the kernel itself supports mime types since 2.2. I'm not using a DE anymore and I'd need some sort of lightweight handler to open programs accordingly.
So where are file associations handled in linux? Any suggestions on how to solve this problem?

File associations are a mess right now. Many programs (Opera included) handle them their own way. There's a project underway to handle associations in a standard way (see MIME actions, shared MIME info, desktop entries, all at freedesktop.org), but not all software uses it; KDE is a notable holdout (3 at least, not sure about 4).
Note that that first spec link, MIME actions, is currently "in the requirements-gathering / early-planning stages." That means there is no spec for that. As I said, a mess.
Most likely, Opera and Thunderbird detected you were running KDE and special-cased their association-finder to ask KDE instead. Now that you aren't, they're falling back to their normal behavior: use the first .desktop file to claim the MIME type. As I recall, both applications offer ways to specify associations in their preferences; you might just want to stick to that for now. Or use a desktop environment.
The kernel-level MIME support is designed to allow execution of strange files using interpreters. For example, you could directly execute Windows applications (as in "./notepad.exe") by setting the kernel to "interpret" application/exe files using wine. No applications use it for opening files.

  • File associations in Bridge CC after updating to CC 2014

I am facing a problem with the file association settings in Bridge CC after having updated my other creative suite programs to version CC 2014.
In previous version I had the option when opening eg. PDF file to chose "open with", and then chose Illustrator or Photoshop. This option is no longer available. When using the Preference menu under file association I can only change the default settings to be either Acrobat or for some reason Firefox. When browsing for Illustrator or Photoshop and choosing the program the PDF file will only open in Illustrator or Photoshop as default not Acrobat as it is suppose to. Does anybody have a solution to this problem.

Thank you for the answer, but is doesn't fix the problem. The explorer settings lets me open pdf files in Acrobat, Illustrator or Photoshop.
The problem is that Bridge doesn't allow me to open pdf files in Illustrator.
When trying to solve the problem by altering the file type association settings, browsing and choosing Illustrator CC 2014, the pdf files will then open by default in Illustrator, and this is not what i want. I want the option to chose, open with Illustrator, and still have Acrobat as the default program.
Anybody know how to fix this?

  • Importing text file (delimited, fixed width) with MDM Import Manager?

    Hello all,
According to the overview section of the import manager reference guide, it is possible to import from delimited text files (e.g. CSV).
But when it comes to the details, text files are not mentioned anymore. I also found no option in the Import Manager.
Could you tell me whether this is possible and - if it is - how?
    Thanks in advance!
    Kind regards,
    Dennis

    Hi Dennis,
In order to import flat files into MDM do the following. This solution is specific to MS Windows:
    I. Set up ODBC for *.txt or *.csv files
    1. Open Data Sources (ODBC) interface:
    Start> Settings> Control Panel--> Administrative Tools -->Data Sources (ODBC).
    2. Select System DSN Tab in Data Sources (ODBC) interface.
    3. Click on [Add]. Select the Microsoft Text Driver. Click Finish.
    4. Write a Data Source Name
    5. Uncheck Use Current Directory to enable the [Select Directory…] button.
    6. Click on [Select directory…] to determine the source directory.
    7. Select the source file.
    8. Click [OK] and return to the ODBC Text Setup screen.
    9. Click [OK].
    10. Return to the ODBC Data Source Administrator dialog and click [OK].
    II. Importing from Flat file
    1. Run MDM Import Manager.
    2. Select ODBC from the Type drop-down field of the Connect To Source dialog.
    3. Enter the DSN name from the Setup ODBC Connection dialog above.
    4. Select the file name with extension (.csv or .txt) in the Tables panel of MDM Import Manager and the file content in the Records panel.
Hope this solved your problem. Please mark helpful answers
