Import or "placing" graphics

Ok, hopefully someone will have this answer to this one...
It regards how Pages handles imported graphics... such as photos, art, etc.
In previous desktop publishing applications I've worked with (PageMaker and Indesign) they placed an image of the file within the document but "linked" to the original source material for printing purposes (for the sake of discussion, we'll say a photo). If the "linked" photo was trashed (or removed from its original location), the document would still show an image of the photo, but when printing or outputting to .pdf you would be warned that the linked file was missing. In fact, if memory serves me, upon opening the document, you would receive an error message that the linked could not be found and that a "low res" image would be used.
My question is, does Pages do this in the same way or does it embed the information from the source file into the Pages document when you insert or place a graphic (photo) ?
It seems that I have a Pages document with many inserted photos, however I have inadvertently trashed the original photo files. I am wondering if the Pages document will print well even without the original source material.
Thanks

I you have Pages set to save as a package (Preferences>General Preferences>Saving>Save New Documents as Packages), then it will keep a copy of the photo. To see if that is the case, right click the file (or control click if you don't use both buttons on the mouse) and look for Show Package Contents. If it is not greyed out, you should be able to click that and see a copy of all the original photo files.

  • SCRIPT TO IMPORT MULTIPLE PLACED IMAGES..AND OUTPUT MULTIPLE IMAGES TO SINGLE PDF.

    Anyone got a script to import multiple placed images into CS4? or is this possible in CS5?
    and can we output multiple layers into a single PDF in illustrator?  Or multiple layers into single JPEGS from illustrator with one command instead of individually saving out each page... would be a huge time saver for me.
    Currently I output each completed layer individually and then right click those outputted jpegs in their output folder and choose "combine supported files into acrobat..." to make a single acrobat file..
    I`d also like to be able to CTRL click multiple layers and go save as... only those layers get saved out...
    And so adding something in the Save for PDF output dialogue box to save layers to multiple pages would be a helpful time saver..

    In CS 4 and CS 5 you can drag and drop fro m the finder or the Bridge, and I guess any other similar type viewer, multiple number of image files to a document. You can configure the bridge in such a way as to allow you to see the Bridge and your document at the same time for this very purpose.
    If you just drag and drop the files are linked if you drag while holding the shift key then the files will be embedded.
    ID and PS CS 5 have a minibridge which works the sam way but is an actually panel and will stay in the front.
    I separate the images but they import one on top of another.

  • Unwanted lightening effect around placed graphic

    I originally posted this in the InDesign forum but that may have been the wrong way to approach it.
    I have an Illustrator vector graphic placed in InDesign, it's over a dark background.
    Placed by itself the graphic looks fine, exports to PDF fine and prints fine.
    However, there is a drop shadow effect added to the frame in InDesign (using the regular select tool), after which the placed graphic still looks fine.
    There is, unfortunately, an invisible lightening effect added to the graphic which only manifests in the printed PDF.
    This lightening effect is not visible in the InDesign file and is not visible in the PDF on screen (even when I check the separations), it is only visible on the printout of the PDF.
    Since it is not visible in the PDF, here is a simulation of the lightening effect:
    http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/8025/windoweffect.jpg
    Anyone experienced anything like this?

    It could be anything, but probably due to flattening issues on PDF export.
    This is your screen shot, background removed, the two colored rectangles added in ID, added text for "The Gathering," the PS file added and the drop shadow effect applied to the PSD file from within ID. Screen shot is from the PDF.
    Take care, Mike

    I am sending a single-page poster in Illustrator to a commercial printer. There are several placed graphics and I want to choose the correct file-type to keep my Illustrator file nice and small.

    Printers like PDFs, but you should consult with the print vendor before you save the file in any particular format.  Each vendor is different and have an established workflow.  They may not accept JPGs.  If the poster prints offset, you will need to supply the appropriate resolution per their request or what they require. If the poster is large format or grand format, then they will or should know what resolution is appropriate.  However, large format inkjet only requires 144-150ppi at 100% final size.  Try to get in the habit of consulting with the print vendor early on so you end up supplying what is needed.

  • Transparency of placed graphics

    Everything was working beautifully and now has gone horribly wrong. I'm sure it's something simple - I just cannot figure out what!
    b Configuration:
    I am using CS3 (all updates current) on Win Vista. I have been using for nearly a year on this sys.
    b Problem:
    I'll try to describe as best I can but I'm sure my terminology won't always be correct.
    I have InDesign files (brochures) created anywhere from nearly a year ago to a few weeks ago. The linked by placing images looked just as expected until last week or so.
    1. My drop shadows, created in InD, printed with boxes around them. My blending space is Normal.
    2. Some of my linked by placing graphics have a white box around one of the graphic's layers.
    b **For example:
    I placed a map that I created in Illustrator. In Illustrator, I created a pathed layer on the map showing a park. I saved as an AI file and PDF file. When I open the map in Illustrator or Acrobat, the map looks perfect. When I place either the AI or PDF in my InD brochure, the map looks fine - except there is a white rectangle around the park. On screen and, worse, in print!**
    My blend settings are normal. My display performance is high quality. My transparency blend space is doc CMYK.
    This has happened in multiple InD documents. This has happened with multiple graphic files. The graphic files have ranged from a simple, single layer shape PhotoShop files to multi-layer vector Illustrator files. The graphic files appear as desired in their native program or Acrobat.
    I have searched help files and knowlegebase files - but perhaps I'm just not looking in the right section - or typing in the correct magic phrase. I desperately need help so I can turn out some brochures (and maybe keep my sanity)!
    b All ideas welcome.

    Oh my goodness! Bob, thank you! The overprint didn't fix the park in the map - but converting all the Illustrator color to process did! Lesson learned.

  • IDCS4 picture box enlarges/reduces placed graphic upon import

    Hi
    I've noticed on several occasions that Indesign CS4 will either enlarge or reduce placed images (usually a PDF) that I have pulled into a picture box by about half a percent to as much as 200 percent almost randomly. On several instances I did not notice the minor shift in size until the bindery department had come in to me to show me after the job had been printed.
    Has anyone else experienced this? Is there some preference that needs to be set so that the original size isn't changed when I place the graphic? I typically do have the import options selected when I import the PDF and will usually select crop as I pull it in for imposing. Thanks.

    Hi, I'm Devaraj me too facing same problem as Rene like after Exporting and importing about 5 image i'm getting 4 images correctly in that frame but one image is moving up means its not fitted to that frame.
    Can any one facing same kind problem means as you got solution and help me too...

  • [AS CS3] Getting fonts of placed InDd docs (imported pages, or graphics)

    I need to get the status of fonts that are in InDd documents placed inside another InDd document. I can see the fonts in the "Find Font" window, and it shows me if the font is OK or missing. How would I get that information via script?

  • How to import many large graphic images to fit into column width?

    I have a 2-column layout and about 150 large graphic images which must be imported so that they fit exactly into the column width. These are bitmaps which have all the same dimensions. All of them will need a border (stroke). And they should be inline graphics because they belong to exact positions in the text flow.
    What would be the sensible approach to that (apart from scripting which I have not done yet)? I tried to define an object style which has the attribute "Fit content to frame", but this does not scale the image to the column size. How can I avoid to format 150 those images manually?

    It may be easier to change the ppi in photoshop so the image can be placed at the exact size.
    so if the image is 10 inches and the file is 300 ppi
    with resample image unchecked change the width to whatever you want it say 2 inches no the ppi will automatically change to 1500 ppi. Save. If you are creating a PDF make sure these images are not downsampled if you need the resolution.
    another way if all images are the same size would be to size one and place it where all the images go and relink to the other pics, when you relink it should retain the properties of the previous pic.

  • Import Failed (Placing InDesign Files in InDesign CS6)

    I'm trying to place about 100 different ads in InDesign format into my InDesign CS6 document. The last couple years I've done this with CS4 without any issues. However, this year I'm using CS6. Now I'm running into the "Import Failed" error message after placing about 4-5 different files. The only way to fix it is to quit out of InDesign and relaunching it. When it relaunches, it actually automatically opens the document I had open before even though I had closed and saved it before quitting. So, to me, this seems like a glitch that's causing InDesign to think it crashed after quitting too. Has anyone else run into this? It is driving me absolutely insane.
    InDesign 8.0.1
    Mac OS X 10.7.5

    I figured it out. I just happened to think, "Hey, maybe it's Suitcase Fusion." Sure enough, as soon as I disable the plugin, everything is working fine. Go figure. I'll post something with them.

  • Placing graphics OVER a video in iWeb?

    Hi, I have a video on my iWeb site and I want to place a graphic over it to act kind of like a picture frame. The graphic I want to use has transparent parts I created in photoshop so that, when I "send to front" on iWeb, it appears OVER my video and my video can then be seen behind it. However, when I publish my project and visit my site, the video always appears over the graphic frame I created. Is there a way to make the graphic act as an overlay through html or something?
    Thanks!

    Thanks, everyone! I tried placing the video in a text box. Do I then also place the frame in that same text box? If so, should it then be able to fit over the video? I feel like I must be doing something wrong.
    If I try the other technique of placing the image in the video, is there an easy way to do that in iMovie? I don't have Final Cut.

  • Can imported EPS color graphic print as black in CS3 (Mac)?

    I am switching to ID from PageMaker 6 (Mac) and wonder why the newly opened document will only print graphic files (EPS) in composite gray instead of black? There is no option for black output except for text. All other options are Composite gray, RGB, CMKY, etc. I'm using Mac OS 10.4.11 and an old HP 2100M black/white printer and have to fax output to customer for approval. Black text and gray images on the same document is not too cool!
    Pagemaker allows you to select "print colors in black" in the print dialog box and everything prints in black. Why doesn't ID seem to offer the same thing, or did I miss something?
    Thanks,
    Chuck

    Hi Bob,
    I was afraid you'd tell me that. InDesign can't print a graphic in
    black on a B/W printer... not great Adobe. I'm kind of surprised
    seeing that PageMaker does it easily. Is it the same for ID CS5?
    Trouble is I have literally thousands of PM documents with imported
    EPS files. I know EPS is now an obsolete file format, but the reality
    of it is that's what I have to work with. To have to go back to each
    and every file+ and re-create the graphic in black & white just isn't
    feasible. I guess I'll have to reconsider the imminent switch to ID a
    bit more.
    Appreciate the feedback, even though it wasn't what I wanted to
    hear. : )
    Thanks,
    Chuck

  • Importing image or graphic onto working layer?

    I am using Photoshop cs4

  • Embedded movie not playing once imported and placed in Dreamweaver

    I have created a Flash index page to be placed in a html document for publishing.  The flash document as a .SWF file with a FLV file embedded, which is an image slide show with sound track. Everything appears to work in Flash 8 when tested including links, and slide show including the sound track.  When I create the HTML file with Dreamweaver 8 and save and test the file the background appears the buttons appear to work but do not seem to navigate to the blank text pages that I have made for testing.
         But the biggest problem is the FLV file does not even start the center section of the page stays black.  The clear movie controls do not appear on the screen with mouseover either.
    The image slide show file is one created for me by: ANIMOTO and was downloaded as  a MP4 file.  I used Flash 8 to covert it to FLV with no problems.
    Can anyone tell me if you can embed a FLV file in a swf file and then import it to the html file created with dreamweaver...???
    And if so....HOW?????
    Randy
    PS.  Is the upload section going to ever work again???

    Hi Amy and welcome to our community
    If your sound isn't playing in preview, check the way you are
    previewing. Are you using the "Play this slide" preview? If so, you
    may have muted the little icon in the Timeline.
    If you aren't hearing audio after you publish, check the
    Publish settings. Click the Publish toolbar button, then click the
    Preferences... button. Look at the dialog that should appear. Is
    there a check mark in the check box option labeled: "Inclue audio
    when project is generated"?
    Cheers... Rick

  • Placing graphics within a scroller area

    I have on one of my view a lot of text so I have created it so to scroll see below, (if wrong plese let me know):
    <s:Scroller left="20" right="20" top="20" bottom="0">
         <s:RichEditableText percentWidth="100" percentHeight="100" editable="false" selectable="false">
              <s:p>My text goes here</s:p>
         </s:RichEditableText>
    </s:Scroller>
    Now with in this text would live to place some graphics like boxes with text inside as I want to create a diagram etc, but if i place my rectangle code (see below) with in the 'RichEditableText' section all goes well until till I click on a link to goto this view and nothing happens and it freezes up
    <s:Rect width="135" height="71" radiusX="10">
         <s:fill>
    <s:SolidColor color="#ff990" />
         </s:fill>
    </s:Rect>
    Does any one know how I can add the graphics etc with in there to work an scroll with the text, or am i using the wrong scroll method etc.
    Many Thanks
    Si

    Ok I read the doc and searched the web and I found the problem.
    RichEditableText can only accept text or InlineGraphicsElement. If you want to add graphics in the text, you will have to create an InlineGraphicsElement and add it to a paragraph.
    My first suggestion would be to change your declaration for this :
    <s:Scroller left="20" right="20" top="20" bottom="0">
       <s:RichEditableText percentWidth="100" percentHeight="100" editable="false" selectable="false">
            <s:textFlow>
               <s:TextFlow>
                   <s:p id="firstPar">
                         My text goes here
                   </s:p>
               </s:TextFlow>
           </s:textFlow>
      </s:RichEditableText>
    </s:Scroller>
    This will allow you to have more than 1 paragraph. It's how Adobe implement a RichEditableText in the doc.
    To add a graphic to this paragraph, you will add this code in the fx:Script tag.
    import flashx.textLayout.elements.InlineGraphicElement;
    private var rec:InlineGraphicElement;
    protected function view1_viewActivateHandler(event:ViewNavigatorEvent):void
         rec = new InlineGraphicElement();
         rec.source = drawRect();
         firstPar.addChild(rec);
    private function drawRect():Sprite
         var spt:Sprite = new Sprite();
         spt.graphics.beginFill(0xff9900);
         spt.graphics.drawRect(0,0,135,71);
         spt.graphics.endFill();
         return spt;
    The InlineGraphicElement can load an external file (an image for example). You can also create a sprite and set it as the source as I do here.
    I hope this will help you to understand how you could do what you want to do

  • Placing graphics

    I am new to Dreamweaver CS5.5, I used to use GoLive. I am trying to place graphics and I am assumming I need to place them in div's. After I create a div I place the cursor inside the box I make and use the insert command to place a graphic in the div box. The problem I have is moving the graphics to the correct location. I open the css style for the div and used the box and positioning tabs and I cant seem to get the graphic to locate where I want it. I have a placed a background graphic on the page and it is fixed to not move while the div content scrolls. I also am trying to have the dive blocks self centering when I changed the horizontal dimention of the page. I need help bad. I have looked at a number of online tutorials and cant seem to figure this out. This is suppose to be basic stuff and I cant seem to handle it. Not sure what will happen when I get to the difficult things. Thanks!
