Import Saturation and Contrast Issues

Hi all,
Strange issue popped up today. On import, my video appears dull and lifeless (red bricks grey). The video camera lcd looks great (red bricks red). I've imported multiple times before without this issue, including from the same mini dv tape and camera set up. Have I messed up the settings somewhere that I can't find. I know I can adjust saturation, etc from imovie, but I'd like to start with something at least close. . . .
Using iMovie '11 and Panasonic mini-dv that's several years old.
Thanks,
Steve
PS I've looked, but can't find a solution on the forum, though the issue has been posted up before.

Set up new user, same issue.
To get it close to reality, I have to bump saturation up nearly 200% with the level sliders about 7 and 95 as well. Indoor lighting, red banner, girl with red hair, red bricks, all terribly muted. LCD screen and direct to tv quite vibrant. . . .
Thanks for any suggestions.
Best,
Steve

  • Brightness and Contrast Issue on Calibration

I've started having migraine issues the last few years. On one machine I have, I wanted to create a few different monitor calibration sets, so that I could switch between sets that were for accurate work, and then sets that were lower in brightness and color temp, which would be easier on my head. I'm using 10.5.8 and an external ViewSonic. I just now realized, that the contrast and brightness settings seem to be overridden by the monitor. In other words... Say that you go to calibrate... You start off by manually setting the contrast and brightness, then adjust all the other settings and save the calibration. If you are using that calibration set and manually change the brightness and/or contrast... clicking on any calibration set, will NOT return the brightness and contrast to the settings you had them at, for that saved calibration set. ie: There's basically only one brightness and contrast setting you can have, at any given time, no matter what calibration set you’re running.
This doesn't seem right. Has it always been like this?

Hi Dave, see if this might be of use...
Go to System Preferences > Universal Access and down in the Display: section make sure that the Enhance contrast: slider is all the way to left to Normal, or more to the right for less Contrast.

  • Why such poor quality saturation and contrast with NEFs?

Having used Lightroom since the beginning, I'm at my wits end.
Ever since Lightroom 1, I've noticed that ACR does a really -really, bad job handeling NEFs when you push contrast and saturation, especially in regards to certain colors (reds, yellows, and blues).
I thought for a long time it was my side, originally using a consumer DSLR (D50), but it affects every NEF I've ever imported, from any Nikon body up to D4.
The saturation gets chunky with little effort (even after attempting to correct via the Calibration panel), the same when pushing contrast. Not pushing it beyond the files' limits, just a simple s-curve.
When importing other RAW formats, this is less often the case.
It's really frustrating to be able to rely on Lightroom doing and adequate job 75% of the time, and it makes me look bad in front of clients.
Has/ does anyone else run into this? Does anyone have any ideas, or tips as to avoiding this?
I really hate the UI of C1, but since it has started implementing cataloging I am getting more and more enticed to switch over completely, as even when I push things waaay too contrasty or overly saturated the results are still miles better.
I'm an unabashed Adobe fanboy with fond memories of the introduction of Levels (Oooooo) back in the day, but I'm feeling I've been pushed to a point where I have to default to whatever program does a better job handeling RAW info, and ACR is not cutting it at a professional level.

Well, I don't know how to explain it any better, I feel I put it pretty straight forward, however here's an example from a small lookbook. The red is not accurate, everything else is.
The only thing I've ever come up with is possibly some 'Out of Gamut Warning' option that I haven't found to disable, twenty_one. However, no, I do know Lightroom VERY well, just not 100%, maybe 95%. When Soft proofing for monitor, all colors in the example are within gamut in sRGB, AdobeRGB, and my calibrated monitor color space.
I've almost exclusively run into this with NEFs, I've used Lightroom with Canon, PhaseOne backs, Leaf backs, Fujis, and more. Oh, and I am a pro, and have worked a wide range of clients from Harper's, Elle, and BEBE, to RED, Playboy and more -not to toot my horn, but to establish I'm not a green.
I'm on Lightroom 5, current build.
Typically I stay with the Adobe Standard Profile or Portrait, but none seem to help this particular issue.
Not sure what sort of NEFs Nikon produced in '76, but I to have been with Adobe since Photoshop 2. I'm viewing on a calibrated monitor in good viewing conditions. I don't print, this is most commonly an issue with lookbooks and catalogs when they need perfect color, the issue remains when viewed on other monitors. I've also tested images on my studio's Eizo CG276 and run into nealry exactly the same results (nearly in that there are pixels of difference, however it's a different size than my normal editing monitor).

  • Over saturated and contrast with previews in Aperture 3.4.5

When I import photos from my Nikon D700 I import both RAW and JPEG with RAW as the master. The initial previews are great, but as soon as aperture updates the preview it becomes over saturated with too much contrast. I have tried post import processing with both Aperture and Camera presets with the same result. I have followed other similar threads that go into the technical details of what a preview is, this is fine, but what I want to know is what I'm doing that stops me from keeping the original good preview image. Can anyone tell me exactly where the initial preview was generated adn how to keep it?
    Cheers
P.S. i have temporarily disabled this terrible change by toggling 'P'

Can anyone tell me exactly where the initial preview was generated adn how to keep it?
    Haggy72,
as you have seen the many threads on previews, I am sure, you know already, that the initial preview is the preview generated by your camera. It reflects all raw processing and all effects set in your camera, but it does not show, what the unprocessed raw image is like.
Aperture will create a preview, that is showing excatly, how the raw image will look, without any edits applied.  When you are using the raw as original image file, it is necessary, that the preview (and the thumbnail) will show you the raw image as it is. How else are you to know, what edits will be necessary to create the image you want?
if you want to keep the original, camera generated preview, use the jpeg as original image file. That image is a high resolution version of the preview you like.

  • Import packages and Compilation issues

    hello,
I am trying to compile and import a package in eclipse but it is not working.
Any helpful links or feedback would be helpful.
In the left pane is package explorer.
I right clicked and imported the apache commons .jar files.
The source .java files are in the same project folder.
On the top navigation in Eclispe the Project Button is not showing the build project accessible.

Your problem is really vague. It´s too generic and visually. Please use technically correct terms. Also please tell what error message exactly you got.
As far it sounds like that you don´t understand how classpaths work and how the Eclipse´s buildpath is related to that.

  • Saturation and contrast differences

I need to understand this...someone help please! How come I have to stretch my adjustments to ridiculous amounts (I do mean to the max) in Aperture in order for them to show up (sometimes barely show up at all!!) in the browsers? I can't even judge their appearance properly while looking at the photographs in Aperture. I am exporting "versions" and have selected the version itself to be exported. It seems almost not worth the while to do any adjustments in Aperture and to simply throw all pics in PS.
    Is this normal?
    MBP   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    hello, marie in china
quote: "I can see the changes/adjustments perfectly in Aperture and usually tweak the images to my taste rather quickly, but the adjustments seem to go out the window when the version is exported and put into a browser."
so, if I understand you correctly, the photos you are seeing in a browser like Safari or Omniweb or Firefox etc look different than what you see in Aperture?
this is ok. to fix this set your export Image Quality higher and to the correct ColorSync Profile. do a few exports to your desktop until the photograph is the way you want it and then upload the jpeg to the site.
File>Export>Export version or shift apple e
Export preset: select JPEG and Edit...select appropriate settings
    OR,
do you mean that the Aperture browser photographs look different than what you see in the Viewer?

  • Changing color and contrast before capturing analog video?

Is it possible to change color (colorcast / saturation and contrast etcetera) before capturing analog video in Final Cut (software)? I have some old dv tapes I would like to upscale to hd and are considering to upscale via the super vhs outlet / connector on the camera through an I/O box (maybe Matrox).
Do you loose much quality when compared to capturing from DV (digital capture)? I would like to make "a first generation" good capture.....

You would need a capture card and a deck with built in controls, or an external TBC that works with compatible decks. Not every deck allows for this external control.
S-VHS or component out would be lesser quality than straight DV capture via firewire. Via firewire it is lossless...straight digital capture. analog capture is a loss of quality. Capture as DV and then upscale with After Effects or Compressor...or get a DV deck with SDI out and capture with...oh, the Mini doesn't do SDI. You'd need the MXO2 LE for best quality capture. With your options, the best bet would be capture as DV and then use Compressor. Or spring for the Matrox MXO2 LE.
    Sorry, good quality costs...

  • Colour / contrast issues while capturing DV/HDV (and Hi8)

I have a Canon Vixia HV30 which I use to record HDV and DV, and use iMovie HD/6 to capture the footage. I'm noticing during import that the colour and contrast quality both seem to be degraded compared to what I see on the camcorder screen (and how it would appear if I were to plug it in directly into my television). Is this just something to do with the playback during import (ie it's not displaying the level of quality that's it's actual capturing?)
I actually noticed something similar happening when using iMovie HD/6 to capture Hi8/Digital8 footage from my old Sony DC-TR460 (colour-quality loos); but I assumed that had to do with the passthrough occurring on the Digital8 Sony camera.
Any insight into any of the above? I want to have the highest possible quality capture of all my tapes!

Thanks. Yes my next step will definitely be to burn a DVD of the video and compare it to playing directly off of the original tape from the camera to the tv.
I suppose a follow-up question is what IS a good playback format? I've attempted to export this captured video using numerous settings and nothing ever comes out looking good, including H.264 with the deinterlace option selected. Moreover the dulled colour/darkness issue persists no matter what settings I try.
I'm starting to wonder if it's all worth shooting HD/DV footage at all if I want to share it online. I don't have any problems with the little AVI files my 6 Megapixel Canon Cybershot takes; they look great and I don't need to do anything to them! I obviously want to have the best quality source files possible, and yes, would love to be able to play it on big widescreen tvs as well. But it seems to me one precludes the other!

  • PSE 11 and PS CC issues with import/open and saving

    Good afternoon,
I have had PSE 11 for several months but have hardly touched it due to two problems. When I try to import images into the organizer, if I choose any location other than the default that opens, the whole program freezes and I have to force quit to get out of it. I have been able to open files by going to      File - get photos and videos - by searching....When I can get them, they load at snail speed. I've done a few projects and when I go to save, I have the same issue. This has caused me to loose several projects as again, the whole program freezes and I have to force quit.
I just signed up for the photographer's black Friday deal and downloaded PS. I am having the same issue. If I go to open a file in PS and choose anywhere other than the default location, the box closes immediately and I can't get anything to open. Thankfully, the program doesn't freeze up like PSE 11, but this is so frustrating. I have Lightroom and have issues there too. What is going on!
    Thanks
    JP

I am having a similar issue with photoshop CC. I am on a mac and just upgraded to maverick (
OS X 10.9 (13A603)) and since the update any time I want to open or place a file it closes the window.
Something worse happened on windows 8.1 when I upgraded that OS Illustrator and photoshop just crashed once it was open. I had to uninstall and reinstall both applications and it worked.
I tried the same thing on the mac and uninstalled photoshop, then reinstalled it but I that did not resolve the issue. I have a video of what it is doing. The two workarounds I found was to drag the images into photoshop or create a new file then go to file open which you will see in the video.
If there is a fix for this please let me know, it is very frustrating!
    Regards

  • Need help: Flex  record webcam problem, how to setting Brightness,Contrast,Saturation and Sharpness

    Hello, dear all
    Please help me!
Flex  record webcam problem, how to setting Brightness,Contrast,Saturation and Sharpness?

  • NEF import: default brightness set to +50 and contrast to +25 -- why?

When importing D80 NEF RAW files, brightness is always pre-set to +50 (and contrast to +25). When "corrected" to zero, one would have to do an expose compensation for the images to appear with regular exposure.
I feel pretty uncomfortable with that behavior and do not thing it is intuitive. Should not the brightness control default to zero? Is brightness +50 semantically equivalent to "no brightness correction"? Is this kind of a workaround? Or is there some exposure <-> brightness optimization going on?
(Lightroom 1.0, Windows XP, Import/"Develop Settings" are set to "None".)

The default settings are the same used by ACR under Photoshop. Reset them as you like and save as new default.

  • Brightness and Contrast Import Defaults

When I import NEFs from a D200, LR gives it a brightness +50 and contrast +25. The photos look pretty good with that setting, but LR instructions suggests to first adjust exposure, recovery, and blacks before futzing with brightness and contrast. So, 1. why does LR do that in the first place, and 2. would I be better off making a preset that starts brightness and contrast at zero, and first do the ex, rec, and black settings?
Also, I was taught never to use the brightness and contrast settings in PS.. are the LR settings fundamentally different?
    thanks
    Michael

Is there a way to change these defaults? For eg. I'd like to have the default shadows=0, default vibrance=10, default sharpening=0, etc.
I know you can specify a develop preset on import, but I like being able to tell which files are at "default" settings, and which ones I've worked on individually.
    Thanks,
    Jonathan

  • Image changes brightness and contrast after importing. LR 5.3

I'm importing RAW files straight from a CF card reader into my network storage drive via LR5.3. While reviewing as it imports initially each image looks great but a few seconds after it loads onto the screen it seems like LR applies a bit of extra brightness and lessens the contrast and I lose a load of detail that was there originally. I've not touched the import settings and no filters are being applied by myself on import.
    Thanks in advance.

    Andrew Rodney wrote:
the initial prevew you see is wrong ... LR is showing you the correct preview ...
I think I know what you're trying to say there Andrew, but to attempt a clarification for the OP (and other readers):
    * Lr's rendering may be considered "correct" in Lightroom because it's, well, Lightroom's rendering.
Given the terminology posed by Andrew, in a Nikon software environment, Lightroom's rendering would be considered wrong, and Nikon's correct. And such is the perspective that many people bring to Lr - that Nikon's rendering should be considered "correct", and Lr's rendering should "match", and to the extent that it doesn't, it's "wrong"...
The bottom line (from my perspective):
Since Lr's rendering ignores camera settings (as manufacturer's rendering ignores Lightroom settings), one needs to learn to (set up defaults and) apply Lightroom settings to have the Lightroom rendering how they want..

  • Contrast, Saturation and Brightness settings for L...

I wanted to know how to change the contrast, saturation and brightness of the images from the built in camera app on Lumia 620. The app doesn't have the option to,change these settings... I was previously using a WP7 which, had these features, but they don't exist in the Lumia 620. So,is there a work around for these? Or is there a way to access these features, as the images come out very dull.

  • Color and contrast different from Premiere Pro 2 DVD creation

I found after creating DVD's via Premiere Pro 2 are more saturated and more neutral in color vs encoding through Encore.
I made a si8de by side test, converted them back to AVI and grabbed the same still of each. The Encore still was lower in contrast (flatter) and a slight bit warmer. over all the DVD compression from PP2 gives a richer look. If you are a film maker or photographer this matters a lot, but not for most users.
the file sizes from premiere are bigger. for example a 8mbs from a 7:30 avi compression on premiere resulted in 544mb while a 9.4 compression via encore 2 resulted in 464 mb. when changing the mbs from 8-9.4 mbs it resulted in exactly the same size file 464mb. even when starting a new project, which means that there might be a bug and encoding on a unknown predetermined mbs, probably 7. This would explain the flatter look of the Encore 2 compression.
Does anyone know how to find out at what rate a dvd has been encoded after it's done? knowing that there isn't any difference in the file size between 8mbs and 9.4 mbs shows that there must be a problem.
This test was done with the Encore DVD 2 trial version. I have vs 1.51 as well and will make a test on this one as well. to see if there is the same problem.

    1. Can you detail your exact method, step-by-step, for both Premiere and Encore?
encode encoded in premiere 2 at the highest level 9mbs (didn't chapter for a simple auto disk, this is disabled in pp2 but you can save as an mpg2 and import for chaptering in Encore2)
    2. Did you use the exact same source files for all tests, or just files that were the same duration?
Exactly the same source file, when importing the mpg2 into premiere i simply imported each file in the timelime and saved exactly the frame of each mpg2. All this started when i first compared 2 encodings from a film directors reel where quality is crucial, and saw it immidiatly when playing the 2 different dvd's of the same reel on a DVD player (JVC) and Sony monitor.
    3. Be sure to include project settings and program preferences for both applications.
encore 2 encoded at cbr 1x 9mbps (highest)
Premiere 2 encoded at cbr 1x 8mbps (highest)
when setting to 9mbps in PP2 I get the3 following warning:
Total Video and audio bitrate (10.536 Mbs) exceeds maximum allowable bitrate (10.030 Mbps) for DVD type of muxing.
So i reduced the bitrate to 8 and still got a file of 557mb and better color and contrast than Encore2.
The final results of encoding in PP2 gives an identical DVD mpg as far as color and contrast to the original AVI.
When encoding at the max rate of 9 in PP1.5 i never got this warning.
I just repeated the above test on more time in PP2 and Encore DVD 2
they must use a different codec for Encore2 than PP2.
Besides the color and gamma shift the image size horizontally is a slight bit different (larger) than the one done with PP2, but not verically.
you can also encode in PP2 save it as a multiplexed mpg2 file and than chapter it for the final dvd in encore2 which gives you the higher quality results of PP2.
