Importing 24p(adv) footage

I have shot footage on the Panasonic DVX100 in 24p mode. I am wondering if the information is stored on the tape so that any camcorder or vtr may be the source from which I import the footage intp FCP 4, or does it have to be imported from a 24p camera? I.E. can I import the footage from an XL1?
Thank you.

There is NO SUCH THING as a 24P deck. 24P or 24PA only affects the content of an NTSC 29.97 frame rate. Much the same as the fact that you don't need a "flower" deck to play back footage of daisies...

  • Importing "24p Cinema" footage from Canon AVCHD camera ?

    Hi all,
I have bought a CANON HFS10 Vixia AVCHD camera, I`ve made some footage using the "24p cinema" mode.
When using media browser in PPCS5 and importing it, it still indicates (like in CS4) under "properties", that the footage is "29.97 fps", as CS5 is compatible with this camera specifically, shouldn`t CS5 indicate something like "24 cinema Canon mode" or so ?
It`s my understanding that the Canon camera produces a 24 fps footage "wrapped" in a 29.97 container; it`s also my understanding that, as CS4 is not compatible with this camera, it looked ONLY at the wrapper and said under properties "29.97 fps", that sounds reasonable for me.
But what about CS5 ? How do I know if it is really "seeing" the 24p footage wrapped in a 29.97 fps wrapper if it still says "29.97 fps" ? Will it perform the editing and exporting correctly even though ?
    Thank you very much,
    RK

I was wondering though.....shouldn`t I just NOT DO Anything ?
Well, that would be ideal... but you know how THAT goes
There`s an Adobe document at its web site talking specifically about the
Canon cameras, it mentions specifically my camera and the so-called "24p
    cinema" format.
Can you post a link? I'm just curious what it says. The biggest issue is that Canon actually has (at least) two different 24p "formats," and your camcorder records to the not-so-easy-to-deal-with version. It's what Canon deems "24pf," which means that it records 18 progressive frames and 12 interlaced frames, but it doesn't flag which are which, so programs that are not able to determine the pulldown cadence can't remove the necessary frames to create a true 24p clip. After Effects (and a number of other methods) can determine the cadence, but that's an extra step, obviously.
It says that I can use Media Browser to import the files and...that`s
all, it doesn`t go any further. The option Interpret footage -> remove
pulldown is greyed out for me (?)
Yeah, that makes sense, given the above. Do you have a really short clip you wouldn't mind uploading somewhere for a test? I can't find one anywhere online...
I wonder if I could just edit it normally (labelled as 29.97fps
though..) and export the timeline as 23.976p....?
Which results would I achieve ? I`m trying to avoid  spending some
    expensive blu-ray medias doing tests;
You could, technically speaking, but aesthetically, you'd be pretty displeased with the results. The export process isn't any smarter than the import process, so unless you do the necessary steps, you won't get a good, clean 24p encode.

  • Not allowed to import 24p footage

Hi in iMovie 08 I could import 24p footage but with iMovie 09 it wont let me. What gives

From what I recall iMovie has never supported 24p playback. Go to iMovie's preferences, (any version of iMovie) and look at the video standards drop down list. You will only see 30fps and 25fps. So even if you could get 24p content into iMovie '09, you'll probably have problems with it when you make projects.
24p has always been a pro-sumer and professional format. To properly edit this footage you'll need software that has this playback and editing mode. Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro are you best options for this.

  • Determining 24p vs 24p advanced footage

Is there a foolproof way to figure out if your footage was shot at 24p standard or 24p advanced?
    thanks

to be clearer: I am going to edit my project in a 23.98 timeline.
Ok... then we need to make sure the footage is converted properly to 23.98 because once it's on tape REGARDLESS of what you shot -- it WILL be 29.98.
I have brought in some of the footage that I shot at standard 24p/ F5 via the DV-NTSC easy set-up, and made a 29.97 test sequence in the "project" that I put that footage in. I have not as yet converted any of that standard 24p footage as yet via Cinema Tools, but when I do it is my understanding that I'll be able to then use the footage in the 23.98 timeline
    Correct.
The footage that I have written down as being shot at 24p ADV/ F6 was captured using the 3:2 pulldown removal into a separate "project." I made a test sequence with a 23.98 timeline.
    I'm getting the picture...
What's happening is that I'm getting those red "needs rendering" lines when I move clips into the sequences (again, as a test) but not where I would expect them. For example, one clip of 24p advanced footage I brought in using the 3:2 pulldown, with the sequence set at 23.98, is nevertheless showing a red render bar above it. baffled.
Hope this is a mistake... there isn't a set up to remove 3.2... only 2.3.3.2. And, yes -- captured material with the advanced cadence removed via FCP on capture WILL show a TC Rate of 30 fps... so :29 to :00. And yes, there will be 'frames' missing.
Now... why are you getting render lines?? Make sure indeed that you are working with a DV NTSC 48k sequence with anamorphic selected. Apple-Zero the sequence in the browser to MAKE SURE the settings are correct.
Also -- check the item properties for the captured material.
email me offline if you get too confused. Might be easier to walk thru it on iChat.

  • Importing "Hi 8" footage

I have a Sony Digital 8 camcorder that I've been using with FCE 2.0.3 for a long time now. Not the highest-end product in the world but it works great for my projects.
Today for the first time I tried to use the Digital 8 camcorder to import into FCE footage that was recorded on Hi-8 tapes with a non-digital camcorder. Obviously it didn't work or I wouldn't be here crying about it.
The footage plays fine on the camcorder, and I can even import into iMovie this way, but I can't figure out how to do it with FCE. I can control the camera from FCE's import window, but I can't mark in and out points (presumably because there is no timecode on the tape). I have tried to start the tape playing and then click the Now button, but all I get is a black window that says "waiting for time code".
I have tried using the camcorder's DV pass-through feature, but that didn't make any difference either.
    Can anyone provide suggestions?

This may be a silly question...but if you convert analog "Hi 8" footage using a Digital 8 camera, will this easy setup method (non-controllable DV converter), allow you to use the DV start/stop detect feature?
The help menu describes this DV Start/Stop detect feature. I've never used it, but I have tons of Hi8 footage to transfer and would like to be able to automatically have chapter markers inserted.
Is this possible when converting old tapes using a Digital 8 camera for transferring? Or does it only work with true DV footage.
    Thanks,
    Jenny

  • Audio from imported mini dv footage seems to work in iMovie, but not in Quicktime or Toast

I'm importing some old footage from mini dv tapes using iMovie 10. When I play back the footage using iMovie it plays back with audio. When I go into the library and look at the .mov files, they don't play back with audio in Quicktime.
    I'm running Mavericks 10.9.4 and iMovie 10.0.4.
I tried it in Final Cut X 10.1.2 too.
They'll play back fine in VLC.
But when I go to burn them to a DVD, the audio magically goes away again.
    Any ideas??

    Hi
How do You go from iMovie'13 (v.10) to
    - QuickTime
    - iDVD
    I would:
    - Share as file and as 480p (NO OTHER)
    - This file should both play and import OK in QT and in iDVD
How was it recorded in Your Camera ?
    - SP-mode 16-bit audio - or -
    - SP-mode 12-bit audio - or -
    - LP-mode 12-bit audio (90 minutes onto a 60 minutes tape)
To work OK with iMovie - audio must be in 16-bit mode
If tape is recorded in LP-mode - Then You need to use exactly the same Camera when making the Import to iMovie - not even same brand and type no: will work securely. Tolerances are too narrow.
(There are works around - but to do that I use analog-out and an A/D-box with TimeBase correction - to get the best SP 16-bit version to work with)

  • Creating a DVD that retains (most) of the quality of the 24p 1080 footage.

    Hello all,
I have done extensive forum research prior to posting this and have, for the last two days, unsuccessfully created a DVD. I do wedding videography and I have been venturing out and wanted to try to use FCPX on my wifes mac. So, I imported all the footage from our Canon 5 and 7D cameras. Created/edited the entire movie on FCPX. This is where I am stuck.
I noticed FCPX doesnt have native chapter markers like iMovie.
The solution I found was to choose Share>Export>Compressor.
Once in Compressor, I was to set my own chapter markers via that program then Export to Mpeg-2.
The next step was to use MpegStream to change the aspect ratio to 16:9 in order for iDVD to accept a better aspect ratio.
    Here is my problem.
I get all of the above done, just prior to importing to iDVD.
Once the video (about 30 minutes long) is converted to 16:9, I lose all sound on the new file. I have beautiful, 1080i video, but no sound. Also, I have no idea how to figure out if the chapter markers are still there.
I am utterly confused and lost. I don't know if I am doing too many steps or too little.
I am a mac noob as all I have previously done was edit on iMovie and just export to iDVD using Best quality and it still came out at 480x540 which is godawful when trying to give a client better quality dvd.
I generally use Adobe CS6 on my PC, however this time I was short on time and did a quick transfer to the Macbook. I tried transfering the files back to the PC after switching them to AVI, had a major loss in quality so...I am stuck using the Macbook and either iMovie or FCPX...
I pray that someone out there that knows their stuff can walk me through what to do in order to get these DVD's done.
Ideally I want to get these mailed out tomorrow, but I don't want to mail out 540p DVD's. I at least want to get these things to 720p if not better.
    Please help!
    Thank you in advance.
    Jason

First all, Karsten is quite knowledgeable about this subject, so I recommend taking any and all advice he offers.
Just to add a few comments that I hope will help.
    Stirid wrote:

The latest FCP versions do have this.
The next step was to use MpegStream to change the aspect ratio to 16:9 in order for iDVD to accept a better aspect ratio.
This is an unnecessary step. iDVD does have problems reading SD anamorphic files correctly, but it will get your 1080p aspect ratio (within a 720x480 frame, which is the DVD standard) right if you set up your iDVD project as 16:9.
Once the video (about 30 minutes long) is converted to 16:9, I lose all sound on the new file. I have beautiful, 1080i video, but no sound. Also, I have no idea how to figure out if the chapter markers are still there.
You lose sound because Compressor outputs separate audio and video files, which need to be muxed.Although this can be done in Streamclip, it's again an unnecessary step. As Karsten said, iDVD just wants the original Quick Time and it does all the encoding.
You'll know if iDVD read the chapter markers if you preview and you see Scene Selection.
    Good luck.

  • Importing HD (AVCHD) Footage into Premiere Pro CS3 (windows)

Hi guy's the question is pretty much in the title.
Is it possible to import HD (AVCHD) footage into Premiere (with or without aditional software)?
    Thanks.

What I can't figure out is why such a major format does not have native support in in Premiere CS3.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVCHD
This is a format that has been adopted by Sony and Panasonic and is compatible with most blue-ray players and even the Play Station 3. So why would so many of the small software companies, in competition with Adobe, have recognized the importance of the format and come up with solutions to read and edit the format when Adobe has not?
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb403297&sliceId=2
I've been coming back to Adobe's web site for months hoping to find they are working on a solution and I have found nothing. I have been a huge fan of Adobe software for years and have pumped many a pay check in keeping my Adobe software current, the most recent being the purchase of the CS3 Master Suite. I'm not trying to bash the company but Adobe if your listening I really want to know want to know what the real story is. This goes beyond the "we are just busy and will get to it when can" statements I have been seeing on the adobe sites. It looks to me as though some other deal has been made and Adobe does not want to talk about why they are not incorporating the AVCHD format into Premiere CS3.

  • Getting 24P raw footage from PP ro ENcore

Could someone outline an inter-application rundown between PREMIERE PRO and ENCORE of procedures and settings that make the most of 24P raw footage in editing and output.
This would include navigating extremely confusing respective frame rates of 23.97, 24, 29.97 and 30 all of which we have to choose again in outboard processing input and output (eg.in AFTER EFFECTS), then again in compression, and finally in setting up an ENCORE project.
Dealing with the interlace (which in theory you shouldnt have), and the numerous sidebar choices along the way the add to the mystery. Being consistent is not as easy as it sounds. Between what you start out with and what you end up with is a minefield where common sense does not always come out on top.
The end goal is a compression without apparent field issues that ENCORE can use to deliver an optimal Blu-ray.

The first preset has been selected.
Okay; but that is why I want to see the project panel. You can "select" a preset in the edit panel, but not "select" it as the actual transcode setting.
The Transcode Settings panel, not the Edit Quality Presets panel, is where you actually set the preset to be used.

  • Importing 16:9 Footage!

I have just purchased FCE and am finding the learning curve pretty steep to say the least. One problem I am having is importing 16:9 footage from my Sony DV Camera. Whenever I used iMovie HD it would recognise that my footage is in 16:9 and adjust appropriately, however, Final Cut Express is not recognising the Widescreen formatting and imports it at 4:3. Can anyone help me?
    Thanks in advance.

Sorry, for some reason I thought I was in the FCE forum. I think my brain is sizzling trying to learn FCE!
I did try the anamorphic setting but all it seemed to do was add bars at top and bottom of screen (in grey?!).
Let me try the FCE Forum!
    Thanks for your help.

Since you did not perform the copy process yourself, my thinking is that maybe something went wrong when it was done.  Far too many people don't understand or follow the process that works.
My recommendation would be to get your hands on the cards and do it again, making sure to use only Explorer or Finder for the task.

  • Importing Canon 5D footage: No video input available

System: MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard), Production Premium CS5
When I import or open footage from my Canon 5D (1080 25p) within OnLocation CS5 I get the message "No video input available" below the clip monitor. However, the audio plays. Footage that I take with a Sony EX3 (1080 25p) plays correctly.
    Any suggestions?
    Regards,
    Andreas

    Hi Mark,
    Thanks for your answer.
Being able to add and merge metadata with 5D/7D clips is exactly how I use OnLocation; not for live recording or live logging. I typically have assignments where I shoot about 200-400 clips in a day or two, covering an event from multiple angles and in various shot sizes. I exclusively work with DSLRs and have no immediate plans to switch to other formats. I chose CS5 because of native DSLR workflow support without the need for transcoding. So you would expect all parts of the suite to embrace it, including OL. Initially, it appeared to be that way, but now you call video playback of DSLR footage inside OL "a bug"!?
With the original installment of OL 5.0 I could quickly review a clip and start adding metadata to the clips (for easy reference) and then import them in PPro using the media browser (PPro does have a tendency to have incredible long save times/crashes when you keep the media browser open). After importing, by dragging the Description field right next to the name of the clip in the project panel, I can easily find the material I need for editing purposes (although a search box would help).
I guess now with 5.0.1 I have to have both Bridge (or some other video player) open to be able to view the files and then add metadata to the corresponding clip in OnLocation. Where else could I add meaning to my footage?
Just how strange is that!? Luckily Windows 7 now offers a side-by-side sticky viewing option, but surely there must be a way for OnLocation to do video playback natively...  Come on, it's just a video player, right? If Bridge and PPro and most other parts of the CS5 suite can play this footage back (you can even do matte painting inside Photoshop, right?), then why can't OnLocation? Why is it so difficult to "support" playback of these H.264 files?
The only thing I can imagine is that it may be a technical challenge to read out vectorscope info from compressed footage. So for now (CS5), you could grey out the ability to set in and outpoints inside OnLocation (rough cutting), and disable read-out of all the vectorscopes for DSLR footage... and then provide full native DSLR support in CS6. I just need video and audio playback, to be able to add metadata efficiently and keep my workflow going.
For a DSLR workflow, OnLocation can be a VERY valuable relational database tool that reads and adds metadata from/to associated footage files and creates an XML project-reference file which can then be imported in PPro. IF it works, of course...
I am more than happy to beta-test this for you guys and provide feedback.

  • Importing .MOD SD Footage (Panasonic)

    Hi,
Can anyone tell me how I can import my video footage into iMovie for editing?
All the file extensions are a .MOD format and the softtware Panasonic provided is not Mac compatable. The camcorder does not have firewire, just a standard USB cable.
    Rgds.

    Hi Liamo:
    What camera do you have?
I believe this is the only way you will get your footage to work.

Export to DV Stream and import into iMovie.

  • Importing and editing footage with two different cameras

I am editing a film that has footage caught and imported from two different cameras. Some of the footage is from a handheld HD camera that I have worked with before and use an "Easy Setup of Apple Intermediate Codec, 29.97 fps, HDV Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60." I want to add some video footage that I shot with my Canon Rebel t2i. I searched a number of threads and concluded that when working with a project shot with the t2i, I should have the the Easy Setup be "HD, 29.97fps, DVCPRO HD 1080p30" (side question: is this correct?). My question is when starting a project where I will be using footage from both cameras, what Easy Setup should I use and is there anything else I should keep in mind?

Shane-- Thanks for the willingness to help. I am in Helena, but travel all over the state for work--I am a fly fishing and bird hunting guide who likes to do some amateur filming and editing on the side. Love Missoula, Bozeman, Flathead area, etc! And since you are willing to be so helpful, I guess I should start with a go Cats!
I am brand new to FCP, having previously worked a fair amount with FCE4. I actually do have FCP 7 and work with it on my Macbook Pro. My handheld camera is a JVC Everio that captures in AVCHD (1920x1080). I had my Easy Setup in FCE4 as Apple Intermediate Codec. If I use footage from this camera in FCP7, should I continue to do this?
So not only am I new to FCP7, but I just bought the T2i and really am not totally sure what I am doing yet. I just got the Canon EOS Movie Plug-in and modified it according to some threads I read so that it works for the T2i. I also found directions on the Canon website on the proper way to Log and Transfer for T2i footage (side question: can I dump the files off my T2i onto an external HD and then Log and Transfer them into FCP7 from the external, and is there anything I need to know about when doing this?)
So now that you know that I am very knew to FCP7 and the T2i, maybe I should start from scratch. When I log and transfer, what format should I use when I transcode? ProRes 442? And then, however you suggest I should transcode, what should my Easy Setup look like for footage from the T2i?
Wow, if you are still reading at this point, and I haven't exhausted you with all of my questions and naivety, my final question is...once I have become comfortable with importing and editing footage from the T2i, what should I do if I want to log and transfer and then edit footage from both cameras? Do I need to change the Easy Setup? Do I need to make other changes?
Thanks again in advance for all of your help and patience!!!
