Importing 720 x 400 .avi into FCE?

Hi all,
Essentially, I'm trying to import segments of a long .avi file (720x400) into FCE, to be used in a 720 x 576 DV-PAL project.
Thus far, I have used Mpeg Streamclip to export the clips to Quicktime files, unscaled at 720 x 400, and FCE then displays it centred with a letterbox effect. That's the outcome I'd be happy with.
But there's a slight hiccup. I'm placing subtitles over the top of certain sections, using Title 3D and cropped Mattes, you see. When I playback the timeline BEFORE rendering (ie.: a green 'preview' bar above the subtitled bits) everything runs smoothly and appears seamless. But then when I render, the segments of video with subtitles (and only these segments) are pulled out of the correct aspect ratio, so the video appears stretched vertically. It doesn't stretch to fit the whole 576 display - there is a small letterbox - but obviously it doesn't look correct because the picture chops back and forward to stretched and unstretched video. It looks great between subtitles, but then hideous in subtitled bits!
Do you have any advice on how to work around the problem? I'd considered importing the .avi segments to QT in DV-PAL 700x576, but I don't want to change the aspect ratio. Can Mpeg Streamclip add in the top and bottom letterboxes for me?
Hope this makes sense. Cheers, appreciate the help as always.
Sahir

A DV-NTSC video file of 12GB should be a video about 55 minutes in length. If that's the approximate length of your avi video file, then you're probably good to go.
Have you brought the QT file into FCE? Did it behave properly?
FCE's learning curve IS pretty steep. You'd be wise to invest in some training material. Two excellent choices:

  • Importing Avid Meridian QT file into FCE 3.5 HD

I graphics house created a 12 sec. 56.8MB title animation for a 30 minute project I'm editing in FCE. I can import/view the file using my QT Pro app on my PowerBook G4, but I cannot open the same file on my MacPro 2.66 using QT. The graphics guy exported the graphic using Avid Meridian codec. A Get Info. on both computers indicates I have the latest upgrade (QuickTime™ Version 7.2.0, Player Version 7.2 (7.2) Bu, when I click on "Properties" I see that under QT Export>Codecs>Options my PB offers the Avid Meridian codecs, but the PowerMac does not. Is this an Intel thing or what. Please can I get help I'm under a dealine to deliver.
    Thanks, in advance,
    Karl

A bit more info. I neglected to add that I have the latest version of Flip4Mac Pro installed on both computers. And, for some reason, I get a drop down menu that shows the Avid Meridian codec as a choice when exporting – but only on my PowerBook G4. So, this morning, I imported the 12 sec. graphic into FCE on my PB – saved it – quit FCE and transferred the resulting FCE file via ethernet to my MacPro. Then I turned on the external drive I stored it on, and opened that same file in FCE on my MacPro – and, voila! There was the file and it played perfectly so I exported it to tape. And, then I re-imported it to the MacPro program I was working on and I'm all set! Kinda dorky, but it worked. Thanks for the response.

  • Importing AVI into FCE has out of sync audio, but not in iMovie?

    Hi all,
I'ave searched around and can't seen to find this issue in other parts of the forum, so thought I would try posting up. I'm using a GoPro camera which creates AVI files at 27fps, 512 x 384, Mono Audio, 8.0KHz, 32-bit Floating Point. I'm totally new to FCE, but when I drag these files into the project space and watch them on the viewer... it seems like the audio is almost 10 seconds ahead of the video right off the bat. It was the case with all 6 videos I had.
The crazy thing is when I drag these files into iMovie... the audio and video is sync'd up fine. Is there some setting in FCE that I'm missing that's causing this issue?
Any help would be greatly appreciated... I just went out and bought FCE because I figured if I'm going to start editing video more often... I should step up and of course I can't even get my raw clips to play correctly right off the bat
Thanks in advance for any help!
    Jack

  • Importing projects from iMovie HD into FCE HD?

Ok Guys, I know this is a pretty hot/touchy topic around here but I thought I would start a new topic as I am not even getting past step 1 as discussed in several posts and in the way that apple advertise!?
I am using the latest versions of both apps... 5.0.2 and 3.0.1. I follow the instructions as described in the manual (page 139) and FCE shuts down (quit unexpectedly)?
Also... how do i open the 'project/movie' in quicktime? do I have to do a massive export first!?
    Cheers,
    Al

Hey Tom, Thanks for the speedy reply!
I have a very basic project with a title sequence (8secs) and about 7 mins of edited video sequences in the time line from which I have extracted the audio. (so, a title sequence, 1 video track, 1 audio track). It contains no unauthorized material and no music, iTunes etc.
The reason I want to continue my project in FCE is that i want to utilize more video and audio tracks than iMovie can handle... and I'd rather not start again because I have already made about 50 edits which would take a while to redo.
Surely I can take my existing iMovie timeline sequence and import that into FCE. I am going to redo the titles/text, so it's only the video (and audio from the video) that i want exported.
    Is this in anyway possible?
    Regards
    Al

  • Problem with "Import"; Trying to move song into FCE

The answer may be deceptively simple, but it eludes me.
In the past I merely dragged/dropped a song from my iTunes folder into FCE to begin my project. The only files I have chosen to date were mp3 files. There was no problem encountered whatsoever.
Today, the song I chose is not allowed into FCE and the only correlation is that I purchased the song in the iTunes music store and it has an extension of m4a. There error message: "File error: unknown file"
    What am I missing?

Thank you, Tom. Very helpful and I do believe my problem will be solved. However, what makes this a bit of head scratcher for me is that I tested an "import" with another song that I purchased from iTunes music store with no problems.
I don't expect you to know, so thank you so much for the link. I will attempt the workaround right now

  • Cannot import an iMovie HD project into FCE

    Hi,
I've been trying to import an iMovie HD (iMovie 6.0.4) project into FCE and all I get is an error:-
I've also tried to import the same project file into iMovie '09 but nothing is imported.
    Any suggestions, please?
    Thanks,
    TonyT

    Hi
    NO - Not really !
iMovie 1 to HD6 - is one program and it's evolution.
iMovie'08 to '13 - is something completly different - NO code is used from previous iMovie !
So really No other program - iMovie'08 - '13 or FinalCut Express, Pro or Pro-X or Adobe Premiere etc can import a project so that all work (transitions. texts etc) still remain in an editable form.
    What You can do is
    • Finalize project in iM HD6 - or -
    • Export out as a movie - QT.mov and use this as a template in FinalCut etc and re-build - (doesn't work in iMovie'08 - '13 as it only holds one Video track).

  • Brining .avi into FCE 3.5

I have about a dozen DV tapes that I captured on my PC with Pinnacle Studio, which captures in .avi
Obviously, these are huge files on my old PC hard drive..
Will I be able to bring this footage into FCE and edit it ? I wasn't able to do so with imovie.
I tried using QT Pro to export the footage as mpeg-2, but then the quality was poor.
Am I better off recapturing all the DV tapes directly in FCE ?
    Thanks
    Frank

FCE is a DV and HDV application. While it's possible to convert AVI videos to DV, you will find the results much better if you just recapture directly into FCE from your original tapes.
If you want to try the conversion route, you will need Flip4Mac Pro or a similar utility. However if the material was originally captured using Pinnacle's MPEG 1/2 setting, you'll never get quality that will match an original capture to DV.

  • How can i import vlc media file ( avi ) into itunes -?

it does not import through file add folder / file to library though an mpeg 4 movie, mpeg 4 vido file or a gets imported and even a vlc media file ( .mpg ) gets imported.
Is it so that an avi willl not get imported into itunes and i will have to convert it into another format ?

Use MPEG Streamclip to convert it to MPEG-4. This won't work for all AVIs.

  • Footage has to be imported into FCE first?

I have a lot of DV footage that I captured into iMovie and it has been saved at QT files DV format. When I bring the raw footage in from my hard drive and play it back from within FCE...the video plays for 2seconds then pauses constantly.
Do I have to recapture all of my footage directly into FCE for it to work properly?

About 1 year ago, I imported all of footage from my DV camcorder into iMovie '06. Then I exported the footage as a quicktime file set in the DV format. So, when I either import or open the QT file from within FCE4, it comes into the main window and then I drag it over into the preview window and hit play. It plays but constantly plays, then pauses or I guess as you say that is considered dropping frames?
So, perhaps that is my problem is that I imported the footage already into iMovie '06 and now it is dropping frames because I have not exported it properly from the beginning when I was archiving all of my DV footage from a year ago?
Just wondering if you recommend me re-importing all of my film into FCE.

  • How do i import 480x360 ipad video into fce?

I'm trying to import video from my ipad into fce. Is there a way to set up my sequence with 480x360 parameters? I'd rather not have to render it when bringing it in.
    Thanks,
    Bob

" Is there a way to set up my sequence with 480x360 parameters?"
    No.
That size should be transcoded to a size that is the same as an FCE Easy Setup.
I'd use a DV Easy Setup.

  • Importing H.264 into FCE without decoding/re-encoding. How?

QuickTime cannot open my Handycam VOB files (mpgv/a52) so I'm using ffmpegX to convert them to H.264 (4000+ kbps). when I import the H.264 files into FCE, FCE insists on decoding the files, taking a long time to do so and producing very large in-project media files. I tried converting to the DV format; same problem.
I seem to remember with iMovie that one could place their media files into the project package in a specific format and iMovie wouldn't re-encode them. if I'm importing H.264 files into FCE, what format should they be exactly (video and audio), and how could I import them into an FCE project without FCE decoding/re-encoding them? I'd prefer to use H.264/Dolby+AC3 if possible.
    sincerely,
    Gregory

Ok, you should be converting directly to DV or Apple Intermediate Codec if you intend to edit the video in FCE. Not to H.264 and then importing the H.264 into FCE. You're going from one highly compressed format to another highly compressed format and then FCE is trying to render it into something it can edit.
Also, you can't directly import 5.1 audio into FCE. Even though FCE supports up to 99 audio tracks in a project, you can only import or export a single stereo pair at a time. There are ways to trick it out, but you can't do 5.1 all at once directly in FCE.
Have you tried MPEG Streamclip instead of ffmpegX to do your conversions?

Is it possible to import the movie clips i make with my digital ixus camera directly into FCE 4. With iMovie there is this possibility.
I use this camera mainly because of its size.

    No you can't directly.
Pretty much everthing about that cameras video files don't fit the FCE way of handling video.
Try this free tool to convert to standard DV in QuickTime format.
