Importing mailboxes from Tiger (Mail v. 2.1.3) to Panther (Mail v. 1.3.11)?

Is it possible to import mailboxes into Mail v. 1.3.11 running under Panther (10.3.9) that were originally created and stored in Mail v. 2.1.3 under Tiger (OSX 10.4)?
I have a dual boot Mac with Tiger and Panther running on separate drives; after moving over to Tiger I'm finding some incompatibilities with older software and want to move back to Panther permanently on this machine, hence I need to get all my latest mail folders back into the older version of Mail.
I've been sucessful in importing them, but they appeear as empty, and won't refresh even if I rebuild them.
Is there a way to do this?

Hi Jona,
Not sure if this is your situation but is it possible that it is a problem with Tiger's emlx format and Panther's mbox format? I'm confused though because you say that you were able to import them but they are just "empty" files.
See if emlx to mbox Converter - 1.0.3 can help. I have not used Tiger (I use Panther 10.3.9) so I am not sure that is your problem but worth looking at.
Just be careful to not delete anything before testing to make sure they have imported correctly!
If not a problem with format then perhaps with indexing.
good luck,
LS

  • Can't import my mailboxes from Tiger Mail into Leopard

    Hi everyone,
I bought a new MBP and I'm now in the process of carefully importing my mailboxes from Tiger mail, on my Tiger backup HD, to the new mail program. I have about 20000 messages saved since 1999, sorted by project etc. Each time I select a batch of mailboxes to import, I get a failure message when it's almost done, saying that some messages couldn't be imported. This is very frustrating: my e-mail archive is possible the most important collection of files on the computer. I would hate for it to become messed up/corrupted.
    Thanks for any suggestions!
    Alex

Try copying the directory ~/Library/Mail/ (the library folder in your home directory) from your old computer to the same location on your Leopard install. I believe the versions of Mail in Tiger and Leopard use the same directory structure, so this should work.

  • Importing mailboxes from Thunderbird to mail

I'm trying to Importing mailboxes from Thunderbird to mail. All it seems to do is import some, how do I get it to import all from Thunderbird.

    Two ways to go...
    1st...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
    2nd...
    Get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, Reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

  • Importing Mailboxes from Panther to Tiger

I am attempting to import mailboxes from one Mac operating on Panther to a new Mac Mini operating on Tiger. The directions simply say to go to "import mailboxes" which I have done. The folders show up in my new Mail however they are all empty. Of course, they are not empty on my Panther OS. Any solutions?

I don't know what is it that you've tried, but there are a few things you should be aware of. First of all, the conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.0 is broken. Take a look at this thread to better understand the problem:
Help! "You need to take this account online in order to download it."
Now, the easiest way to bring your mail from the old machine to the new one would be to just copy the HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist preferences file and the HOME/Library/Mail folder from the old machine into the same location on the new machine. Note, however, that, depending how do you transfer the files from one machine to the other, file ownership of those files can be messed up and Disk Utility won't be able to fix that afterwards. For best results, whatever you do, be sure you do it from the new machine and while logged in as the user that's going to use those files in that machine.
When launching Mail on the new machine, Mail should realize that the mail database has to be converted to the new format used by Mail 2.0 and should proceed to import all your mailboxes. If you want this to succeed, be sure you've read the thread I've provided a link to above, and tidy up your mailboxes in Panther before attempting to import them in Tiger.
You may also want to consider using Migration Assistant. I don't know whether this would be a good idea or not, however:

  • How can I import mailboxes from Eudora to my new POP Mail account?

    Good afternoon!
I have 10.4.11 on my Mac Mini and want to transfer my mail service from Eudora to Mail. I opened a POP account, but when I tried to import mailboxes from the Eudora Folder stored in Documents I got an Error message: No valid Eudora files were found.
I know the mailbox folder is in the Eudora Folder in Documents, so why can't Mail find it?

I'm not sure if you need Eudora Mailbox Cleaner, but you might take a look at it.

Have no idea whether this will help or if it's even what resolved my same recent imap problems that involved primarily *GMAIL imaps*, but it seems to be helping.
First, make sure all imap accounts are dragged up to the very top of the inbox/accounts list: *imaps above pops*
(Any IMAP accounts that have multiple folders should be at the top of the imaps).
Second, go into Mail > preference > accounts > [ each imap account ] > Advanced Tab
Above the box for the Port is *_IMAP Path Prefix_:* Type in INBOX
(reminder: If it's gmail, make sure your port is 993 and Use SSL is checked.)
Hope this helps. so far this is what seems to have helped w/mine (i have other problems such as zero results in my smart mailboxes--they no longer work).
I also have a different imap account not google/gmail and I don't use INBOX in the path prefix on that one and it has always worked just fine; the problems started with gmail imaps.
i'll be interested to know if it helps anyone else.
(Note: I manually synchronize the gmail IMAP accounts because having the auto synch box checked also seems to cause problems but your experience may vary)
    cheers!
now if anyone can tell me why after all these years apple has not fixed the lookupd / dns / network bugs that result in this (among other similar failures)

  • Importing mailboxes from Entourage to Mail

When I import mailboxes from Microsoft Entourage (Office 2004 for Mac) the boxes (sometimes) duplicate. Both boxes show content but when I try to read an individual message it is blank - no text.
When I reconstruct a box all the content disappears totally. If I try to suppress one of a set of duplicated boxes both are suppressed : firstly hey reappear as empty white/grey boxes and when I suppress those they disappear totally!
Some imported photos are monocolour (green expanses!)
Is anyone having similar problems importing from Entourage or am I doing something stupid? I follow all instructions carefully!
All help/tips gratefully accepted as I want to go 100% Mac but not lose years of records!

  • How do you delete a VIP mailbox from the mail app?

How do you delete a VIP mailbox from the mail app?

    From Mail help:
    Make a sender a VIP
To keep track of messages you receive from especially important people, make them VIPs in Mail. You can have up to 100 VIPs.
To make someone a VIP, move the pointer to the left of the sender’s name in the message header and click the star that appears. You can also move the pointer over the sender’s email address, click the arrow that appears, and choose “Add to VIPs” from the pop-up menu.A mailbox for the VIP is added to the Favorites bar. For example, if you make Dad a VIP sender, his messages are displayed in a VIP mailbox titled Dad.
To remove VIP status from a sender, click the VIP’s star in a message. The star is removed and the sender’s VIP mailbox is removed from the Favorites bar.
If a VIP has several email addresses in Contacts, messages from any of those addresses will appear in the VIP’s mailbox.
If you use iCloud Contacts, your VIPs are available on your other Mac computers that use iCloud Contacts and have OS X Mountain Lion installed.
So to remove a VIP mailbox, you would have to remove all its people, and then exit mail.

  • Importing mailbox - no valid mail files found

    Hi
I'm having problems importing a mailbox from my back-up on a CD-ROM. I click on 'Import Mailbox' and choose 'mail for os x' and then the folder which ends '*.mbox'. I then get an error which says, 'No valid mail files found'. Within that mailbox I can see messages ending *.emix but it just won't work.
Can anyone help me to restore these emails?
    Thanks.

Back up one directory level and select the Mailboxes folder (/Home/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/) instead. You should then get a listing of available mailboxes from which you can import. Uncheck those you don't want to import.

How do I import photos from E mails to Pages?

Send yourself an e-mail with image embedded or attached.
    Open e-mail in Safari.
If embedded, click the small, LEFT pointing arrow in upper right of tool bar.
    Click "Save image,"
It will go into your "Photos" icon on your Home screen.
If attached, download the attachment. It should go into your "Photos" icon....I think. I haven't tried this with an attached photo.
Click on "Photo" icon to check if it/they are there.
Select the photo you want to import to pages by clicking on it..
When you do so, you will see on the toolbar that pops-up above, a small box with a right-pointing arrow. Click on it. Select "Copy Photo."
Go back to your "Home" page.
    Click on the "Pages" icon..
    As a test, open a blank/new document.
Click anyplace on it until you see a menu open-up that says "Select - Select all - Paste."
    Click on "Paste."
Click on "Undo" in the upper left of the toolbar to get rid of it.
You can repeat this on any document that accepts images by putting in the cursor wherever you want the photo inserted, tap until the "Select - Select As - Paste" box reapperas and  and click "Paste."
    Good luck.

  • How Do I Import Playlists From Tiger To Leopard?

OK, I give up. The following falls under the category “It Doesn’t Have To Be This Hard.”
I purchased a new iMac and went with the 24 inch Intel 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo, 10.5.5. Sweet.
With my previous iMac (G5 Rev A., 10.3.9), I had Tiger 10.4.11 installed on an external HD and used it for my iTunes collection. All was well.
Now, with Leopard on the new iMac, I’m stumped as to how I can import the playlists from Tiger’s iTunes. I’ve imported the music and podcasts, etc. from Tiger but the playlists are empty. I have them listed but all except one have no music in them.
So, my questions (after performing a thorough review of the forums and entering every search term I could think of related to this issue) are these:
    1. How do I import playlists from Tiger to Leopard so that I get music and playlists?
    2. Where are the playlists stored? I cannot find them using a Spotlight search ( using Leopard), nor are they listed in the iTunes music files. So, where does Tiger and/or Leopard keep them?
    3. At least one playlist made it from Tiger to Leopard. Why did the other playlists arrive but w/o music in them?
    4. Is the problem I have described a common one? If so, why is there no easy fix for it. Or perhaps there is an easy fix but I’m too blind to see it.
Anyone with answers is encouraged to reply. I’ll sign off as “flyboy01” but in reality I’m “Stumped!”
    Thanks in advance,
    flyboy01

Just so you know, the difference in the version of the operating system has no bearing here as you would have experienced the same issue going from account to account on the same computer because you performed an incomplete iTunes transfer. As you inquired about where playlists are located, I will give you a complete break down of iTunes database structure as well as the proper technique for transferring your library.
    _*INSIDE iTUNES*_
*iTunes Components: The Library and the Database Table*
The term library gets thrown around quite a bit when people discuss iTunes, but what you see in iTunes denoted as your libraries (e.g., music, podcasts, TV shows, etc.) is actually just a reference to your actual media library. iTunes is essentially a database package, just like your local public library’s computer-based card catalog system; the difference is that the content is electronic and owned by the user so you can also directly access the content through iTunes instead of having to go and (physically) retrieve it. Your actual library is the collection of media files you have stored on your computer. If you think of it in terms of the real world, your media files are the virtual equivalent of the books, periodicals, microforms, etc., in a real library and the folder or volume in which those media files are contained is the library.
While iTunes will allow you to add media to its library (iTunes library interface) from anywhere on any volume attached to your computer (e.g., branch libraries), iTunes generally expects your library to reside in a single folder (main library). In iTunes that folder is referred to as your iTunes Music folder and by default it is a folder named iTunes Music contained in your iTunes folder (~/Music/iTunes). The music folder can have any name and be located anywhere on any attached volume as long as you inform iTunes of where it is located by changing the iTunes Music folder location in the Advanced tab of iTunes’ preferences.
How you organize music within your music folder is unimportant, but iTunes must know the location of the (root) music folder in order to properly access the media files contained within that directory. The reason for that is because once you have defined a music folder location, or leave the default, that location is where iTunes will automatically place any new content that you add to iTunes’ library. Keeping the location of the music library straight is most important to iTunes users, such as myself, that keep their actual library on a separate volume from the system volume where the iTunes folder is located.
When iTunes uses the term library, it is actually referring to its database table file. Properly designed databases, particularly those that are scalable and that allow records (database entries) to be found or visually organized via multiple keys (metadata), as iTunes does, consist of two basic parts: the database, or source data (records), and the index table(s). In iTunes your media files are the records. Along with the actual media content, those files also contain a number of tags that provide a range of information about that particular media file (e.g., artist, song title, movie title, album, year, etc.).
The database table is the iTunes Library file located in your iTunes folder. That file is actually what iTunes references the vast majority of the time when you are browsing your collection. The table contains metadata about all of the media files in your library and it is that metadata that is displayed in iTunes when you browse your library. When you play content or edit tags, then iTunes directly accesses the files in your library. The table also contains your playlists and playlist folders, so that is the reason that Spotlight would seem to not find them on your computer’s hard drive; Spotlight most likely did list ‘iTunes Music Library.xml’, as that file is an XML version of iTunes database table.
If you copy the iTunes Music Library.xml file to the desktop on your old computer and open it, you will see the basic structure of the table. The first group of entries are the definitions of your media files—the code between the <dict> and </dict> tags—and contain the metadata that is displayed in iTunes and by which you can search and group music in iTunes various views. The definitions also contain metadata defining the location of the media file, if the track is enabled (checked) or disabled (un-checked), the (iTunes) track ID, etc.
If you scroll toward the end of the XML file, you will see the definitions of your playlists and playlist folders as well as some occasional data blocks that look like gibberish. The latter is the text representation of the binary code that defines the criteria for smart playlists. On thing that you will notice about the playlist definitions is that they do not contain detailed track info or metadata for the songs contained within the playlist(s). iTunes is a relational database, so the playlists do not contain any actual data, but instead a list of indices (pointers), the Track IDs, to the definitions for each track you have in your playlists. The definitions listed in the first part of the XML file also contain only a subset of the tracks ID3 tags. The definitions only require metadata for information that is relevant to permitting you to browse and organize your library in iTunes’ interface. In the track definition, the Location metadata is an index and points to the actual media file where the complete set of ID3 tags, as well as the actual media content, reside.
While your media resides in your music folder, the library structure you create in iTunes is actually a simple, albeit long, table stored in a separate file. Another component of iTunes is the artwork database kept in the Album Artwork folder. The Album Artwork folder contains a complex folder tree structure with proprietary .itc files at the leaves. I do not know what the exact structure of the .itc files is, but they play a role in storing image info for the various graphic-based views in iTunes (e.g., CoverFlow). Also, any songs you purchase from the iTunes Store will have the cover art stored in the Album Artwork folder; images that you add manually are stored in the actual media files.
*Transferring Your Library to a New Computer*
Now you see that there is more to iTunes than just your media files. Thus, if you want the playlists that you spent time building to migrate with your music collection simply copying the music folder to the new computer is not going to result in what you want: a complete transfer of the library you dedicated time and energy into organizing. When you transfer music files to a new computer iTunes builds a new library around that content and the only playlists that will be present are the defaults tha come with iTunes; your user-defined playlists will not appear on the new computer if you have not transferred the database table.
In order to successfully transfer iTunes to a new computer you need to move your library and everything that was built around that library. To perform a complete library transfer you need to follow this procedure:
    1. *Consolidate your library* If you know for a fact that all of you media files are contained within a single root directory (e.g., iTunes Music), then this step is not necessary. If you do not have the preference to “Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library” enabled, then there is a good chance that you will have orphaned media files and should consolidate your library just in case. To perform library consolidation go to Advanced > Consolidate Library (iTunes 7.x) or File > Library > Consolidate Library (iTunes 8).
    2. *Transfer your database* Replace the default iTunes folder on your new Mac with the iTunes folder from your old Mac by transferring the entire folder. When asked if you wish to replace the existing iTunes, do so.
    3. *Get the media library* If you keep your music in the default iTunes Music folder contained in the iTunes folder, then you have already performed this step. If not, transfer your music folder from you old Mac to wherever you wish for it to reside on your new Mac.
    4. *Set up iTunes* Unless you already started modifying preferences in iTunes on the new Mac, when you launch iTunes you should see your music library just as you did on your old Mac.
    a. If your library is in the default location, ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes music folder, iTunes will begin rebuilding your library after it launches. Once that process is completed, you should see your library with playlists and folders intact.
    b. If your library is in an alternate location, you will see an empty library, but you should see your playlists and folders, albeit filled with broken links. Go to the Advanced tab in iTunes’ preferences and change the location of the iTunes Music folder to the location of your transferred music library. iTunes will begin rebuilding your library from the alternate folder. Once that process is completed your library should be just as it was on your old Mac.
    5. *Keep your library consolidated* To insure that any new media that you add to iTunes stays with your main library when you add content to iTunes make sure the “Copy files” preference is enabled. If the “Copy files” preference is disabled then any content that does not come from the iTunes Store or ripped CDs that you add to your iTunes library will remain in the location where the content was originally placed.
Hopefully this helps you better understand how iTunes works and why simply transferring your media files results in a loss of your library’s structure.

  • Import email from apple mail not working

I have a simple applescript which imports emails from Apple Mail into filemaker
    tell application "Mail"
              set theSelection to selection
set theMessage to item 1 of theSelection
              content of theMessage
set the clipboard to content of theMessage as text
    end tell
This works in the Old Apple Mail in 10.6 but Lion changes everything doesnt it. This is not working in the new Mail 5.1. It will import the first message in the string but not the HIGHLIGHTED message which may be in the message string of 3 or 4. I want it to set theMessage contents of the highlighted message. Does anyone know how to select the highlighted message in a string - sometimes called the selected message. Thanks

  • Imported Mailboxes from Mail, but Emails Didn't Import

I am upgrading from a Mac with OS X 10.3.9 to a faster Mac with OS X 10.4.8. In doing so, I'm trying to get my Mail emails from one computer to another. I went to LIBRARY / MAIL / MAILBOXES on the old computer and copied that folder into the same spot on the new computer. Then, in Mail, I:
    • selected FILE / IMPORT MAILBOXES
    • checked "Mail for Mac OS X"
    • found the appropriate mailboxes in LIBRARY / MAIL / MAILBOXES
    • had them all checked to import, and
    • seleced "Choose"
This successfully imported all of the mailboxes. Unfortunately, it didn't import any of the emails. I saw on another posting that a bug in Mail causes the LIBRARY / MAIL / MAILBOXES folder to sometimes be a file rather than a folder, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. Any thoughts about how to get all of my emails imported?
    Thanks!
    G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Not sure what the problem is, but you did it wrong. You shouldn’t have moved the mailboxes to be imported into ~/Library/Mail/. Why did you do that? Actually, you shouldn’t have tinkered with the contents of ~/Library/Mail/ at all, amongst other reasons because ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/ is precisely where Mail would create the mailboxes resulting from the import.
Quit Mail, move the Mailboxes folder out of ~/Library/Mail/ (e.g. to the Desktop), and start over, i.e. import the Mailboxes folder that’s now on the Desktop and post back with your observations -- you may want to get rid first of any unnecessary folders that Mail may have created there.

  • Importing Mailboxes from 10.3.9

The motherboard on my venerable slot-loading 1999 iMac DV, running 10.3.9, finally bit it recently. The cost to repair with labor far exceeded the value of the iMac, so I was not so hurt to have to go out and buy a new MacBook...which is just an awesome computer so far. Anyway, I rescued the old 80GB harddrive from the iMac and bought an external enclosure which works great as well. I've been able to easily import my iCal calendars, Safari bookmarks and iPhoto photos. However, when I try to import my mailboxes from OS X Mail, they show up as "greyed out" and cannot be chosen for import. Is there something I'm not doing right? It's not a really big deal, but there's a few I'd like to have for record-keeping. Thanks!

    macBook, 2Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

When I switched from a previous iMac with 10.3.6 to this one, I did the following (and, amazingly enough, it worked even though I went from Panther to Tiger):
On previous iMac, went to Users/Library/Mail/Mailboxes and made a backup copy of each and every .mbox folder (I have a lot of them, not just inbox, sent, etc) and put them all in one folder named import (or whatever) on a CD.
On the new iMac, I opened Mail and after clicking on "import" under File menu, I chose the new import folder on the CD and all my mailboxes with all contents intact were imported without a hitch.
A couple of Macs ago, I did it a bit differently and it also worked: after making a backup copy of every .mbox folder, I went to Users/Library/Mail/Mailboxes on the new computer, trashed each and every (empty) .mbox folder and manually put in all the backup folders. That method worked also, but I can't remember which OS version I was on at the time.
You might want to try either or both of these methods - just don't empty the trash (method #2) until you know things work as they should.
    Hope this helps.
