Importing music with international characters

I want to import some old music with international characters in the filenames (and probably id3 tag) into itunes.
I want to use the music in my car's mp3 reader which uses ms-dos and can't handle international characters. How can I get itunes to sort this for me when I import? can I get tunes to convert the French characters into ms-dos suitable ones?

Perhaps something at Doug's Scripts this would help, e.g. http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=tracknameeditwithsed although doing it one character at a time might get a little dull. I've not spotted a "replace all non-ascii charcters" script but it shouldn't be too hard to create one.

Problem with international characters showing up as junk

Little question.
I've made a xml data template which executes a query to fetch person names from the e-business suite tables.
However there are international characters in the names which are showing up incorrectly. When executing the query in the database everything shows up correctly. But when the query is executed via XML publisher the produced XML contains junk characters.
This is happening with for example o umlaut characters.
The database characterset is: WE8ISO8859P1
Version of XML publisher: 5.6.3

This turned out to be an extra property which was set in the data template:
property scalable_mode with value "on"
This caused the special characters to be mangled.

Import dump with greek characters

Hi
Client had provided us dump file with expdp command. We have imported it with impdp command. However, data contains greek characters. Database charset is same in both source and target database (UTF8).
Currently it seems such greek characters are not properly installed as import dump gives error for creating index on columns where such data is there as it seems it is not interpreted properly.
Is it necessary to take care to set export nls_language parameter at the time of import/export? OR can work if specify at import time?
Please guide on it.

Are you sure they are ???? - a lot of the time it's just because the client isnt displaying it properly - check some of the things i mention here:

Also - are you sure the index is 'ok' in the original database - there hasn't been something funny done with novalidate or anything like that?
can you do a count(*) in the original and a count(distinct) and see if they are the same?

Sending a message to MQSeries using with international characters

I managed to setup oracle messaging gateway to IBM MQSeries. While sending and receiving English message is Fine, sending international characters (8bit Arabic) is received as ??????. I know how to fix this issues when using normal oracle tools. But for the MGW, i cannot find in the documentation where to find the National Language support setting NLS_LANG

It had nothing to do gateway setting. Actually, it was my mistake. The client environment setting was not correct.
Once corrected, all went fine

Importing Library with "Illegal" characters-Problem

Importing a large library of images each with own description eg Couple/Dog-#12/3/1.tif
Found problem with / (Forward slash)...Lightroom shows no Preview.
Went to File Handling Tab
Went to Set The Following Characters as Illegal and chose all of them.
But will still not import any image with a Forward Slash.
Short of correcting thousands of images manually I'm at a loss of what to do.
What I don't understand is why they will open in Photoshop but not Lightroom.
Help much appreciated!

In Bridge, go through these files and use Batch Rename to correct these file names. The preset "String Substitution" allows you to search for "/" and replace it with "-", and do the same with the "#".
By using those characters, you were asking for trouble sooner or later. Best to avoid them.

EPMA dimension import issue with spanish characters

We are using special characters for spanish words, like the word Español.
When this was imported into EPMA using the Import Profile and importing a flat file, EPMA added the alias member as espan then showed a square box and then the l. Then, when deploying the app, no errors recorded in EPMA but planning showed errors since SQL query could not deal with this strange character (the square box symbol) in its query. When I manually change the member in the dimension library to Español, then the app deploys. So my relational database clearly accepts the characters.
So, the problem is in the Import of the text file when it has the special character ñ or other spanish characters with the accent marks or tildes. Is there something I need to do when importing a file with this character or other spanish language special characters?

BIG PROBLEM: CSS files not loading because of international characters in file name

I have Muse Beta 7 in Spanish.
The program creates a css file called master_a-página-maestra.css in css folder. It is referenced in the resulting HTML code here:

When you work locally in your Windows formatted har drive, everything looks fine, but when you upload your files to a server, everything is screwed up. The server doesn't recognizes the URL and returns an error page, resulting in style errors in the entire site.
This can also happens with html files if the title of the page contains international characters or with images if the image file name in your Hard Drive contains international characters.
I already pointed out long time ago Muse was generating file names with international characters like á, ñ, etc but nobody cared about it. Too bad. I had to activate file name customization but I think that Muse should replace automatically this characters in the same way that it replaces other conflictive characters like commas or ampersands.
This is not a fault of the FTP client. Accented characters are not web safe regardless of the FTP client you are using. It is a server side issue. Some servers support it some others don't. I don't mind if it works in Adobe Catalyst server because the final website is going to be in another server and maybe next year when paid hosting is ended the client may move it to another server.
It makes more sense to replace accented characters in file names by their not accented equivalents ('a' instead of 'á', 'N' instead of 'Ñ', etc) and avoid all this problem.

As you can see, the offending "í" in the file name causes 1and1 server to throw a "page not found" error. And this has happened with many other servers I have tried since.
Muse boast of generating code fully compatible with all major web browsers but by using international characters in file names it ggenerates code suitable only for very few web servers. International characters have been always a no-no for internet URLs. Internet was designed by people who didn't care about ascii codes beyond 127 so using international characters in html file names is just call for problems.
"to work with your hosting provider to determine how to enable Unicode encoded (UTF-8) file names and HTML files on their servers" is not a viable solution most of the time unless you are a Very Important Client of your host provider. If not, making changes means money for them and if you are the only one who complains, they are going to just tell you to not use international characters in your names.

So here is the problem. JFORUM is a very easy to use forum that can be set up within a short period of time. It is all nice UI configuration.
In admin control I reconfigure the forum to be in Russian.
When I store messages in DB and later on retrieve them they come up as question marks :(
I tried to alter the table but it did not work. Here is an example of one table:

International characters from a DB

I'm having problems using a MySQL server with Swedish characters. I'm using latin1 as the character set. Everything works through the mysql client but not through JBDC. I'm getting out all international characters (English) but not the Swedish characters - they just appear like %'s and other signs.
Does anyone use a database with international characters? Do you do anything special to make it work?

I'm using MySQL, with latin1 as the character set (that's the default, I just left it that way). I don't have any problems with non-ASCII characters such as 'é'. But then I put them into the DB using Java and I took them out using Java. I haven't tried the MySQL text-based client but I doubt that it would work correctly with those characters, since my computer is running Windows, and the DOS command line uses a non-standard character set.

How do I import music from a flash drive that was formatted with a windows PC to my MacBook - the drive is showing it has over 3GB of info on it but none of the files are showing up in finder? I had backed up my iTunes library on the flash drive about a year and a half ago before I switched from a dell to a MacBook pro.

What I found works for me is to make sure iTunes keeps the music files organzied in the iTunes Media folder according to album, artists, etc. and that it copies the music files there when adding them to the library. That way, if something happens to the library, the raw files can always be re-imported again.

In iTunes, go "Help > Run Diagnostics". Uncheck the boxes other than DVD/CD tests, as per the following screenshot:

Don't drag the midi into an open Logic project. The tracks won't set up correctly.
'Open' the midi file with Logic as if it were a Logic project. Then all the tracks will be set up so you can start editing them and applying better saved sounds and instruments, but you'll be at a starting place where you can hear what's going on.

International Characters with Netmail

Hi all,
I'm using Sun One portal server 6. I have set the platform charset to Iso-8859-7 so that every portal page displays greek characters correctly.
My only problem is with NetMail. When I get mail I can see greek characters correctly with NetMail Lite. However when I'm sending email using NetMail Lite if I write Greek characters they turn to question marks when I read the email with any client (Netmail Lite, Outlook express etc).
Any ideas

Issue with displaying international characters returned by Search And Promote.

     I am trying to display international characters being returned by Search and Promote. The actual text returned by S&P is televisión, while the one being displayed is televisiÃ³n
I am usging r.get() to fetch values returned by S&P. The issue is only with data returned by S&P. Local international texts are being properly displayed.

Thanks Sham! Found the fix. I am checking for invalid characters in the byte stream and then applying corresponding encoding.
