Importing xml question

Hi
I've set up importing XML before, but only when there are absolute amounts of XML data to bring in.
How do you set it up when there can be variable numbers of list items coming in, and applky them to consecutive vars?
eg - in the XML file...
<list>
        <item
            label = "Number 1"
/>
<item
            label = "Number 2"
/>
</list>
...and then in AS3 tell Flash "take how ever many list items there are, and apply them to var001, var002, var003 and so on until there are no more items to apply?
Thanks
Shaun

Thanks kglad.  I'm going to look fro a component to do this for me.
Cheers

  • [JS] Simple question: Is importing XML from variable of XML datatype still not possible?

    Hi,
Am I correct assuming that there is still no way to import XML into an XML element, directly from a variable of data-type XML?
Will I still need to save data to disk, just to be able get it into the XML structure?
    Thanks,
    Andreas

I totally agree. I look for this improvement once in a while, when I do changes and improvements in my code. I hoped I just hadn't noticed some other way to do it "in memory". It seems very unnecessary with this disk access.
    I filed a feature request at https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform.
Perhaps more people wish for the same... and evntually the XML import functions will be able to handle an XML datatype object as argument.

Hi Manish, Thanks for your response.
Yes, it is a duplicate with Qroducts/Qroduct instead of Products/Product. I did it, because I don't know how to remove the existing "Products" database.
Again, I got the existing "Qroducts" database in this second trial!!??  I am comletely lost in doing "Importing XML file to SQL Table" now!!  I think that I have not touched T-SQL and XML programming, since 2008. I
did not catch the new features of T-SQL 2008, XML, SQL/XML, XQuery, etc. for long time. Recently, I did not know what DECLARE, @x, SET,...were, and dived into the SQL/XML and XQuery programming. I knew the SQL Basics (SELECT, FROM, WHERE,..), creating
the names of databases and tables in SQL Server 2008/2012 Management Studio (Express) before. This morning, I found an old T-SQL 2008 Prgrammer's Guide that has the new features of SQL Server 2008 for T-SQL, XML, XQuery, etc. I just starting reading
it to know what DECLARE, @x, SET,... are. But, I still don't know where the existing databases "Products" and "Qroducts" (created by me) are - they are not in the Databases of SQL Server 2012 Management Studio I am using!!??  Could
you please kindly point out where the "Products" and "Qroducts" databases are?
Prashanth responded to my posted question too and he asked to to try his code: DECLARE @xml XML, SELECT @xml =' <Qroducts>.....SELECT product.value.....FROM @XML.nodes.....AS.... I just learned that his code is doing the thing we
want to do and print the results below the SQL Query. This is not what I need in doing my SQL/XML programming. I am reading/studying the new (2008) features of T-SQL, XQuery 1.0: An XML Query Language (Second Edition), and Microsoft XQuery Language Reference
(SQL Server 2012 Books Online) closely now. I hope that I can resume the T-SQL, XML Query, SQL/XML, XQuery in my SQL Server 2012 Management Studio soon.
Please tell me  where the existing databases "Products" and "Qroducts" I created in my previous trials in my SQL Server 2012 Management Studio.  This is what I need to know and to delete them, before I do this kind of "Importing
XML file to Table of SQL Server 2012 Management Studio"  programming again.
Please kindly help, advise and respond again.
    Many Thanks,
    Scott Chang

  • Import XML to InDesign

New to XML in InDesign, I have a few question, so if you only can answer one or two, please do so.
    1. Is there a way to get InDesign to display in the structure the content of the tag, rather than the tag name over and over again?
    2. Can you make a search in the Structure, XML file in InDesign? I know once you have it on the page you can show where it is in the structure, was looking for the same function vice versa.
    3. We get the data from the App developers, and the data is very messy, lots of spaces, returns etc, which seems legit for the digital version, but in InDesign we have to clean all this up, so when we reimport the data every time with updated content, we have to go through and apply all those manual changes again. What wold be the proper way to tackle this?
    4. When we update the XML file later, do we have to update the whole file, or can you specify which section you want to update. Because we do a lot of Typography after inporting, i assume we have to redo this once the XML gets updated.
    5. What happens with all the duplicats? Every time you copy and paste a content group, new XML entries, also when you duplicate a page.
    Thanks, Dimitri

    1. Turn on "Show Text Snippets" to display the beginning of text.
    2. Double click an xml-element in the structure pane or right-click and "Go to item"
    3.  You can clean up the text in the layout with grep find-replace queries (there are scripts that allow make a series of queries in one go). And by script it's possible to clean up xml-elements themselves – e.g. remove returns from certain elements
    4. As far as I know, you can only merge or append xml-file. You may want to import xml-file as external link and edit it in another app, but I think you’ll lose formatting in InDesign after updating.
    5. Xml-elements are duplicated as well.

  • Import XML to Reader form

I need to find out if it is possible to import XML data to Reader. In Acrobat Pro, one uses the menu to go FORMS > Manange Form Data > Import Data, then selects the appropriate XML file. Is a similar process possible with Reader?
All my computers have Pro, so I can't verify this for myself.
    Thanks for any responses.

I have the same question,  does anyone has the answer ???

  • Can't import XML data into my databse-connected PDF form

    Hi  All
Excellent forum, and thanks for all the revealing insights so far viewed, however one question.I'm using a PDF form to collect info via email in the format of XML datafiles. I also have an identical PDF which has database connectivity and that works fine. It was suggested on this forum that I could then import the XML data into my Database via the DB-connected PDF, in effect a user form and one with DB connectivity. Now, I've checked the data types and they all match, but when I import XML file, it creates a blank record in the database and none of the information is carried through. Please could someone offer guidance on what I'm doing wrong, I've been trying to figure this out for a week now?

  • Importing XML Text files with Indesign friendly 'Carriage Returns'

    Hi,
I have a question wrt importing XML into Indesign.  I have my text stored in Excel (Fig A) and intend to export as an XML file where each line will represent each page.  However, my first attempt failed to treat the 'carriage returns' as I'd envisaged:
The 'carriage returns' used within an Excel cell (ALT-ENTER) are maintained when transforming to a CSV file (Fig B).  However, when converting to an XML file, the conversion only takes place on a line by line basis and hence the XML file becomes incomplete (Fig C).
So, it appears I need to make sure that the CSV file contains one line per entry, while also maintaining the actual carriage returns in my source spreadsheet and for Indesign to recognise them.  In order to do this, I'll need to substitute the 'carriage returns' in my excel column to be represented by a new set of characters.  My question is how can I let Indesign know to recognise this set of characters to be converted to a carriage return, when importing text.
For example, if this set of characters was '%%%%%%', then my new csv file would look like Figure D and the XML would be produced correctly, like Figure E.  Then importing this XML file to InDesign, the carriage returns would automatically be reinstated, hopefully.
I hope someone can help me as I am only starting out in Indesign and feel Im running before I can walk by venturing into the XML/Indesign arena too soon.
    Best Regards
    Luke

    Hi,
    Thanks for all the responses.
With regard to XML, it could well be an issue has crept in because I am using another utility to convert my csv's to xml and maybe there are better options out there. I will take a look for other utilities and try that (Its not possible from Excel easily, even though there is an option to save as an XML file).
Secondly, because the XML was readable by internet explorer, I assumed it had a satisfactory standard XML format which would be accepted by any program, including InDesign.  This proved true, since the XML file i generated was actually recognised by my Indesign document and populated the tags correctly, albeit without any carriage returns.
When I save my excel sheet as a csv, it does actually hold the carriage returns causing multiple lines per entry, hence why I need to substitute the actual carriage returns in my excel sheet to a alternative character set so that the entry remains on one line.
Re: Double quotes on text fields.  Im sorry, I didnt realise I had commas in my sample csv example.
I should have corrected it, but I intend on using semi-colons as my csv delimiter and don't intend on having semi-colons in my excel sheet itself, so I possibly won't need any double-quotes.
    So, it looks like this is what I need to do ;
    i)   Add a column in Excel which substitutes all the carriage returns with a line break identifier (^n).
ii)  Convert Excel file to a semi-colon csv holding this new column,
iii) Convert csv file to XML using a good CSV->XML utility,
iv)  Add the respective XML tags to my INDD document,
    v)   Add a GREP rule which does a find/replace on all instances of ^n and replace with a line break,
    vi)  Import the XML file,
vii) Apply the find/replace GREP rule on the whole document. Carriage returns on my text fields should be consistent with my original excel sheet.
Thanks for all your help fellas.  Will report on how I get on once Im done.
    Best Regards

  • File dialog box when importing XML?

    Quick and hopefully easy question:
What's the javascript format for selecting an XML file manually? I know it's not this:
    /* imports XML manually
    myDocument.importXML=File.openDialog("Choose the current XML file");
I have my project working well, but I've decided to get the user to manually select the XML in case they've downloaded a second version named (for example) data-1.xml and not data.xml. Then the onus is on them to select the most up-to-date XML and we can also name the xml with a datastamp.
Thanks for this any all other help on this forum - I have little enough hair to pull out as it is...
    Simon.

    HI Phil,
Lovely - the XML import works although I now need to get my head around XML story formatting. It's dropping all the XML into the first frame on the first page, which I understand to a degree, but also dropping the XML where I need it.
The issue I have with the XML import is the automated document creation has been built around a sort of hybrid flow- and frame-based XML import. Some of the XML drops into a couple of text frames on the first page (creation date, sections etc), then the rest of the document autoflows onto however many pages it requires.
It looks like I'll need to convert it to entirely flow-based XML import, which might be a bit of a head-scratch for me (being relatively new to this).
Thanks very much. No doubt I'll be back on here with more questions but this is a huge help.
<edit> I did 'fix' the XML, and it works a treat. The more I do, the more I understand.
    Regards,
    Simon.

  • When importing XML, how do I remove lines with labels but no content?

I am working on a directory whose content is supplied as an XML file. I've created an automatic layout with static text/labels for contact details (e.g. Phone, Fax).
When I import the file, superfluous lines with the static text and no content are created. I have 'Delete elements, frames and content that do not match imported XML' checked.
Is there a way of avoid creating these? I've tried doing a search and replace to remove these but this causes quite a few other problems.
    Any help - much appreciated!

    Hi Alison,
Did you create the posted XML file by extracting it from a larger file you've been using successfully? I ask because there seem to be a couple of problems with it which make me wonder how you got it to work at all, at least with the provided InDesign file's XML structure:
The immediate child element of the "root" element in the XML document is one called "step2 ". All of the values with which you are concerned are children of that "step2" element, and yet the structure in the InDesign document contains no "step2" element. As a result, when I import, I get nothing at all in my InDesign document's content (though the data are in the XML structure, buried in a newly-created "step2" element.
In both the XML and the InDesign document's XML structure, you have two different elements which are both named the exactly the same - "description" - (actually, in the XML document, there are three of them). When InDesign imports XML, it stops after the first "match" that it finds, so this will not work in any way that I imagine you intend it to. Based on the content of your InDesign document, I would think there ought to be two separate elements in your XML - named something like "step_description" and "category_description".
If, after getting this all straightened out, your question is how to somehow make the text of an empty element (e.g., <description></description>) disappear in the imported result, there are a few possibilities:
Get rid of the text inside the tag markers in your template/base document - for example, instead of having "[step_description]" (where the "[]" represent the tag markers), just make it be "[]". That way, if there is no text value for "step_description", there will be no text left after the import. However, if you put a end-of-paragraph in your template/base file, that will still be there. In most cases, that's not desired, so you might want to put the empty tag ("[]") in the text flow without a carriage return/line break. If you do that, you will need to include the carriage return in the XML data (which admittedly slightly violates the notion of separating presentation from content). Rather than the xml looking like this:
<step_description>This is the text of my step description.</step_description> you would need to make it be this:
<step_description>This is the text of my step description.&#13;</step_description>
(having added "&#13;" to represent the carriage return (ASCII character 13).
As above, make the tag an empty one, include the carriage return in your InDesign template/base document, and then write (or have written) a script to run after the XML import to deal with such empty tag cases.
Upgrade to InDesign CS3, CS4, or soon, CS5, so you can take advantage of the "XML Rules" feature which was introduced in CS3. XML Rules will essentially allow you to automate the second option - running a script - as the XML import is taking place.
Excuse the long (and probably unclear) post. If I've misunderstood your question, then please excuse it doubly...

  • Howto import XML into Excel table ?

    Hi,
I asked this before in the Excel forums but received the suggestion that I ask here instead.  The question precis : How to ungrey the "Append new data to existing XML lists" checkbox so I can select it when importing XML data into an Excel
    spreadsheet.
I have a local server which provides data in XML form and need to import successive reloads of the XML page into successive lines in an Excel spreadsheet.  I found the Excel help page entitled "How to use XML in Excel 2003" at http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/excel-help/how-to-use-xml-in-excel-2003-HA001101964.aspx?CTT=1&origin=EC001022986
which was useful in so far as permitting me to import the data using the XML Source task pane and mapping the elements I need from the XML source to columns in the spreadsheet.
In order to append successive lines from the XML source page, as I understand it from the link I quoted,  I need to change the XML Map properties to "Append new data to existing XML lists".  However this checkbox is greyed out in the
XML Map properties dialog box so I can't select it.
Any ideas how I can achieve my aims here ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,
Thank you for contacting Office IT Pro General Discussions Services.
From your description, I understand that you tried to import XML into Excel table. You selected “Use the XML Source
task pane” when opening the XML file, then you tried to check the option in the
Map Properties window: "Append new data to existing XML lists".
However, this option is grayed out. If there is any misunderstanding, please feel free to let me know.
I have checked the issue on my side but could not reproduce this issue. I suggest download the sample XML file as suggested on the page and test the
    issue again:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=B4BD3283-AD0B-408D-9CE7-AB9C3537BBBB&displaylang=en
If the problem does not occur with the sample XML file, this issue might occur as there are some problems with the XML you were using.
If the problem also occurs in with the sample XML file, this issue might be related to some third-party software conflicts. I suggest checking this
issue by starting Excel in the safe mode.
Start the Office program in safe mode
    ==============
    1.
Click Start, point to All Programs, and then point to
    Microsoft Office.
    2.
Press and hold the CTRL key, and then click
    Microsoft Excel.
If the problem does not occur in the safe mode, this issue might be related to some third-party add-ins in the Excel program, we can try to disable
them. Normally, you could do the following to disable the conflict add-ins in your Excel program:
    Disable add-ins
    Click
    Tools > Options >
Add-in, click Go button in the Manage:
    Com-in Add.
Check if there are any add-ins,
clear the checkbox to disable them.
    Close the Office program and
    restart it.
Add one check back each time to the list of Add-In,
restart the Office program, and repeat the above procedure. Once the issue reappears again, we can determine which add-in causes this problem and then disable it.
Please take your time to try the suggestions and let me know the results at your earliest convenience. If anything is unclear or if there is anything
I can do for you, please feel free to let me know.
    Best Regards,
    Sally Tang

  • Export/Import xml from dynamic pdf form using java

    Hi,
I have been searching for the last 2-3 days on the internet for this. Some posts do talk about it, but none have provided the answer I was looking for. Hopefully this is the correct forum to post the question in.
I am working on a desktop swing application that works on extracting and changing data in a XFA form, I would like to export the form's content modify it and import it back using java. This is so easy with the Adobe Reader, where it nicley exports the form content as an XML document, you can change it manually and the import the data back. I am searching for a way of doing this in java. I found XPAAJ.jar mentioned in some forums, that may make this easy. I havent been able to use it, since I cant find it anywhere.
I found a blog from Mike Potter
    http://blogs.adobe.com/mikepotter/2006/07/download_xpaaj.html
This says that XPAAJ is free as long as I use it on forms developed using livecycle. I dont own livecycle, but the forms that I am working has been built using livecycle.  So my questions are:
    1. Is XPAAJ the correct library to use, to export and import XML data from a dynamic pdf form?
    2. Is XPAAJ free to use and distribute as long as it works on pdf forms developed by livecycle?
    3. Where can I download XPAAJ from?
    4. If XPAAj is no longer available, is there any other free library that does this?
    5. If there isn't any free library, how much would cost me to use and distribute the library along with my desktop application?
    Thanks
    Sethu

    Hi Sethu;
First, its important to know that xpaaj never was a supported piece of software.  It was supplied "as is" with no support from Adobe.  It has been pulled and is no longer available from the Adobe web site.  Mike's blog is from 2006, so its really old information.
    1. Is XPAAJ the correct library to use, to export and import XML data from a dynamic pdf form?
While the xpaaj library will import and export data to/from a form on the client, Adobe now recommends using the LiveCycle ES Forms server.
    2. Is XPAAJ free to use and distribute as long as it works on pdf forms developed by livecycle?
The license stated that you need to own one of Adobe's server side products (not LiveCycle Designer, but one of the server side LiveCycle products).
    3. Where can I download XPAAJ from?
XPAAJ was pulled by Adobe.  They found a few bugs and since it was unsupported software they just pulled it from the web site.
    4. If XPAAj is no longer available, is there any other free library that does this?
Not from Adobe.  Adobe recommends using the LiveCycle ES Forms software for merging data and forms.
    5. If there isn't any free library, how much would cost me to use and distribute the library along with my desktop application?
As far as I know there Adobe doesn't have a client side library available for this (merging dynamic XDP based forms with data).

Hiya!<br /><br />I'm using ID CS3.<br /><br />I'm trying to wrap my head around importing XML, and in particular XML that can change.<br /><br />My test project is an FAQ list.<br /><br />The XML looks like this:<br /><br />><?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?><br />><?xml-stylesheet type="text/xsl" href="format_web.xsl" ?><br />><br />><TroubleshootingSection><br />>  <Question><br />>    <Q_Number>1</Q_Number><br />>    <Q_Question>The laptop takes longer and longer to find a network >during bootup.</Q_Question><br />>    <Q_Answer>Check the number of Wireless Profiles and delete any >profiles that aren't in use.  When the laptop searches for a network, it >searches through all the wireless profiles before it chooses one.  Each >profile can take up to a minute to check, so this can add significant >time to the search.  The number of profiles should be kept as low as >conveniently possible - only networks that are accessed on a daily or >near-daily basis.</Q_Answer><br />>  </Question><br />><br />>(more questions)...<br />><br />></TroubleshootingSection><br /><br />The setup is that as the document grows, more questions will be added.<br /><br />In my ID document, I have three textboxes.  I tried tagging the text boxes, but the only otion was "root", so I imported the XML document and THEN tried tagging the text boxes.  They each changed color, so I know SOMETHING'S happened.<br /><br />The textboxes are now tagged (respectively) Q_Number, Q_Question, and Q_Answer.<br /><br />Then I created styles with the exact same names and assigned those styles to the matching text boxes.<br /><br />Then I went into the structure menu and mapped the tags to the styles of the same name.<br /><br />What I would LIKE is to be able to import the XML and either:<br /><br />1. Have it all flow into some sort of text frame such that it would take up as many pages as the evergrowing FAQ might require, or<br /><br />2. Have it flow into ID and make a new page for every question<br /><br />At the moment, though, I'm not sure what I do next.  I've followed a couple of tutorials online and usually at this point, they say either "and in a few clicks, you've got your import!" or "so then I imported the file and it filled all the data fields up."<br /><br />I spent yesterday afternoon trying to figure out HOW to flow the XML data into those text frames, but couldn't get it to work.  I searched the forums for Import XML and only found one person seeming to do the same thing I'm trying to do, and also no answer for her.<br /><br />Advice would be appreciated, and even more appreciated would be any sort of step-by-step.<br /><br />Thanks!<br /><br />Edward

Oh, that XML just did not format well...<br /><br />Here's another try<br /><br />-=-=-=-=-=-=-<br /><?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?><br /><?xml-stylesheet type="text/xsl" href="format_web.xsl" ?><br /><br /><TroubleshootingSection><br />  <Question><br />    <Q_Number>1</Q_Number><br />    <Q_Question>The laptop takes longer and longer to find a network during bootup.</Q_Question><br />    <Q_Answer>Check the number of Wireless Profiles and delete any profiles that aren't in use.  When the laptop searches for a network, it searches through all the wireless profiles before it chooses one.  Each profile can take up to a minute to check, so this can add significant time to the search.  The number of profiles should be kept as low as conveniently possible - only networks that are accessed on a daily or near-daily basis.</Q_Answer><br />  </Question><br />  <Question><br />    ... (more questions)<br />  </Question><br /></TroubleshootingSection>
