When importing XML, how do I remove lines with labels but no content?

I am working on a directory whose content is supplied as an XML file. I've created an automatic layout with static text/labels for contact details (e.g. Phone, Fax).
When I import the file, superfluous lines with the static text and no content are created. I have 'Delete elements, frames and content that do not match imported XML' checked.
Is there a way of avoid creating these? I've tried doing a search and replace to remove these but this causes quite a few other problems.
Any help - much appreciated!

Hi Alison,
Did you create the posted XML file by extracting it from a larger file you've been using successfully? I ask because there seem to be a couple of problems with it which make me wonder how you got it to work at all, at least with the provided InDesign file's XML structure:
The immediate child element of the "root" element in the XML document is one called "step2 ". All of the values with which you are concerned are children of that "step2" element, and yet the structure in the InDesign document contains no "step2" element. As a result, when I import, I get nothing at all in my InDesign document's content (though the data are in the XML structure, buried in a newly-created "step2" element.
In both the XML and the InDesign document's XML structure, you have two different elements which are both named the exactly the same - "description" - (actually, in the XML document, there are three of them). When InDesign imports XML, it stops after the first "match" that it finds, so this will not work in any way that I imagine you intend it to. Based on the content of your InDesign document, I would think there ought to be two separate elements in your XML - named something like "step_description" and "category_description".
If, after getting this all straightened out, your question is how to somehow make the text of an empty element (e.g., <description></description>) disappear in the imported result, there are a few possibilities:
Get rid of the text inside the tag markers in your template/base document - for example, instead of having "[step_description]" (where the "[]" represent the tag markers), just make it be "[]". That way, if there is no text value for "step_description", there will be no text left after the import. However, if you put a end-of-paragraph in your template/base file, that will still be there. In most cases, that's not desired, so you might want to put the empty tag ("[]") in the text flow without a carriage return/line break. If you do that, you will need to include the carriage return in the XML data (which admittedly slightly violates the notion of separating presentation from content). Rather than the xml looking like this:
<step_description>This is the text of my step description.</step_description> you would need to make it be this:
<step_description>This is the text of my step description.&#13;</step_description>
(having added "&#13;" to represent the carriage return (ASCII character 13).
As above, make the tag an empty one, include the carriage return in your InDesign template/base document, and then write (or have written) a script to run after the XML import to deal with such empty tag cases.
Upgrade to InDesign CS3, CS4, or soon, CS5, so you can take advantage of the "XML Rules" feature which was introduced in CS3. XML Rules will essentially allow you to automate the second option - running a script - as the XML import is taking place.
Excuse the long (and probably unclear) post. If I've misunderstood your question, then please excuse it doubly...

    If you haven't used After Effects before, you should understand that posession of a template is NO guarantee of success without prior AE knowledge.  It appears you haven't used AE before.
    The color bars indicate a missing file, and your screen shot reveals no text layers. Looking at the precomp names, opening the one called, "edit text" might be useful.
    I will guess that the following would be even more useful:

    Without knowledge of the AE basics, templates are pretty much useless.

    Actually, it didn't. With Snow Leopard and Lion, the contextual menu is provided by a built in "service" within the ClamXav application itself.
    If you downloaded ClamXav from the AppStore, all you need to do is trash it and reboot.
    If you downloaded the full version from the web you need to first run the "ClamAV Engine REMOVER" script that comes on the ClamXav_2.x.x.dmg. Then trash the ClamXav application, empty the trash and reboot.
    There are also one or two preferences that can be found in ~/Library/Preferences/ that start with "uk.co.markallen.clamxav..." that take up minimal space and don't do anything without the application. AppTrap probably found those.

    You use Restore to get the latest firmware build, not the Update button. You can only use the Update button, if there is an iOS update, say iOS 5.1.

  • How do you properly tag linked images when importing XML content?

    I'm importing content from an Access database into ID CS2 using XML. So far so good with the text and numbers--I'm having difficulty with the graphics, though. There's an image associated with each record and I want InDesign to place the appropriate image in a placeholder frame.
    Right now I have a field in the database which contains the relative path to the image file for each record, but when I import the XML into ID, the link is displayed as text in the graphics frame.
    How do I solve this?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Give the path to the image as an attribute href.
    example:
    <image href="../my/path/to/the/image.jpg">  (if the path is relative to the indesign-file)
    or

    I have made sure all my home settings are correct in my registry editor and they are. Another thing to note is the control file I am using works 100% perfectly, beautifully when called from Toad for Oracle. It is when called from the command line utility that it fails. Is there anyway to determine what the difference could be?
    So we know that I can work (toad works), but it doesn't yet work in a "cmd" environment.
    Just as any other program Toad is also a client and uses NLS and other environment settings. Maybe these are stored in the registry, maybe the are being set by Toad by reading a configuration file while it is started or while running.
    As said, on Windows its tricky...
    Setting properties in the registry will not mean that they are the same a "cmd" window or maybe not even been set.
    If you execute / run "cmd" then the "set" statement/command will output the environment settings that will be used during the livetime of that "cmd" session.

    ...In the registry you can find a lot of those variables are set for ORACLE_HOME, ORACLE_BASE, SQLPATH, maybe TNS_ADMIN, ORACLE_SID, NLS_LANG. You can find the variables IN the registry on two places. The most common one is the SYSTEM wide environment settings under //HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/ORACLE and in my case for 11.2 under //HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/ORACLE/KEY_OraDb11g_Home1.
    You could overrule this for to be active on "my user session", my login session as account "marco" under //HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Oracle, but no one using Windows is doing this.
    Besides the "cmd" and registry environment, there is a different place as well were you can set these parameters. In windows go to "start", click "control panel", click "system", click tab "Advanced" and then click on the button on the bottum with "Environment Variables". Here you can see the distinction between user and system wide variables as well. Here you can also set NLS_LANG, ORACLE_HOME etc. If I am not mistaken than these will be the default values used in a fresh "cmd" window session. But they can and will interfere with programs you start via clicking them. For example something a Java program like SQL Developer (and/or Toad). If those values are not overrulled by the program by for example using his own variables from a config file or else, those sessings from the "system" / control panel item will be used. If it is the wrong mix, you will encounter strange issues.
    Setting ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_BASE will be used by a lot of derived other settings for example the default place SQL*Net drivers and tnsnames aliases etc will be checked. For example setting the ORACLE_HOME to
    C:\> set ORACLE_HOME=C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1will result in that the tnsnames aliases from
    C:\> set ORACLE_HOME=C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\NETWORK\adminwill be used and NOT the ones maybe needed from
    C:\oracle\product\11.2.0\dbhome_1\NETWORK\adminYou can overrule this behavior by setting the TNS_ADMIN variable. By default, most explicit form for example on linux and Unix, the following rule will be used by Oracle
    1) .tnsnames.ora in the home directory of the user
    2) standard default: $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin
    3) behavior can be overruled via setting $TNS_ADMINThe fact that you are able via Toad to execute it correctly proves you that it can be done. But Toad uses in your session "SQL*Net" or JDBC or ODBC or ADO or ? via its own configuration environment settings that are being set on which values...?
    Both Oracle and Toad use the OSI model (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSI_model), both have to follow the same rules. There hasn't been changed that much over the years, character set conversions are done in the "two task common" layer of the data transport on either side (client/server) when data travels between a client and server. And don't forget a database can be also be a client when for instance database links are being used. One of the reasons to read old manuals because there the basics are still perfectly explained: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/A57673_01/DOC/net/doc/NWUS233/ch2.htm#twotask (Oracle 7.3.4 Networking Manual).
    This long long story is just to show you that you have more control if you set variables explicitly in a "cmd" window (and or in a linux/unix shell (as long as the session isn't "forked")) BUT you will have to be precise. Check the environment a set those environment variables that control / that are being used by "sqlldr" (and that are probably more then you realised, for example that SQL_PATH variable is the default directory where SQL*Plus is looking and saving its "SQL" and spool "LIS" files).

    <Cell aid:table="cell" aid:crows="1" aid:ccols="2">Alcohol</Cell>

    <Cell aid:table="cell" aid:crows="1" aid:ccols="2">Alcoholism</Cell>
    'I save that XML.
    In ID: Import XML... selecting "Merge Content", "only import elements that match existing structure" & "import text elements into tables if tags match"
    The cell with "Alcohol" updates, but the column widths don't change.
    Is this by design?
    When I select "Append Content" I get a (new) table with the formatting (column widths) as specified in the updated aid:ccolwidth and of course, the updated content. When merging content are you giving up all rights to updating formatting at the same time?
    Thanks in advance for any insights.

    Hello,
    The existence check on the Salutation descriptor is likely check cache, as it is the default. Because of this, when you merge the Salutation with id=2, it will check the cache and not find it and so register it as a new object instead. You have 2 options, the first is to read it instead of creating it new. The second is to change your existence checking option so that it will either go tothe database or assume existence so that it is more appropriate for how you intend to use these types of objects in your mappings. For instance, if you never plan to create new ones, assume existence might be more appropriate.
    I suspect though that for most applications, reading the object first is the best option performance wise.
    Best Regards,
    Chris

  • Error when import XML

    I am dealing with a INDD file with XML structure, after import the XML there is always an error occured when I validate it
    How to declare it in DTD? Or any way to avoid it?

    Especially if you are importing XML with tables, I would recommend creating an ID document with tables, either use the auto-tagging or create your own tags based upon your XML, then exporting it to look how the XML is formed.
    Using the namespace as part of the table element should look roughly like this in your XML:
    <Table xmlns:aid="http://ns.adobe.com/AdobeInDesign/4.0/" aid:table="table" aid:trows="8" aid:tcols="5">
    The above is simply from a quick export of a table in ID. But note that the definitions, the declaration, of what the element parts are follows the namespace portion.

  • Error when  importing xml data

    I am getting the following error when loading xml datafile to my Oracle XE database table. This data I exported from htmldb.oracle.com.
    ORA-31011: XML parsing failed ORA-19202: Error occurred in XML processing LPX-00222: error received from SAX callback function
    please help
    George

    George,
    I expect that this is simply an incompatibility with the date format that was used for XML Import/Export as part of XE Beta. This is a bug that has been fixed for XE production and you will be able to freely export from HTML DB 2.0 and import into XE and vice versa.
    Your NLS settings do not control this. The date format used for XML Export is fixed - a canonical date format is always used.
    If you want to be able to import into XE Beta, your date fields probably look like:
    <HIREDATE>2005-12-03T00:00:00.000</HIREDATE>Just remove the trailing .000 from your date entries.
    <HIREDATE>2005-12-03T00:00:00</HIREDATE>
    Note: This will only be necessary for XE Beta. You should not have to do this for XE Production.

  • How do I remove lines from linked text?

    I am using Dreamweaver CS 4 and linked images and text are automatically underlined. How do I remove the underlines from linked text?
    https://www.adobe.com/support/dreamweaver/layout/link_underline/#72192
    According to the Adobe page above, I can add this code to the “head’ area of my html page and then all my links will not have visible lines, but I did that and the lines are still there. Any ideas why?
    <style type="text/css">
    <!--
    a:link {text-decoration: none}
    a:visited {text-decoration: none}
    a:active {text-decoration: none}
    a:hover {text-decoration: underline}
    -->
    </style>

    Hello,
    in my DW I can define this in the (translated from my german DW) page properties, see screenshot
    Have a look at Hyperlinks (CSS) >>> Unterstreichungsstil (underlining style) >>> use dropdown menu output >>> never underline (nie unterstreichen)

  • Iphoto is blacking out vertical images when importing.  how do i fix this?

    iphoto is blacking out vertical images when importing. how do i fix this?

    There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on eight different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
