Impossible to open .dtproje file after re-installing SQL Server Management Studio

Hi all,
today, after re-installing SQL Server Management Studio from a package downloaded from MS web site (SQLManagementStudio_x64_FRA.exe), I tried to open a SSIS package file via Visual Studio and I get a message stating that  this type of project (.dtproj)
is not supported.
Here are the events that lead to this problem:
We have SQL Server 2005 installed on a server and are planning to migrate to SQL Server 2012.
1 - Earlier this year, to solve a problem that we had with the SSMS client, we installed SSMS 2012 client on my station.
At this point, it worked fine for SSMS and when I tried to access SSIS it converted the packages  to SSIS 2012 and it worked fine too.
2 - Yesterday, I tried to access SSMS and I had the message that the test period had expired; at this point I could open a SSIS file.
3 - To solve the problem with SSMS we decided to re-install it. It worked fine for SSMS but now I am not able to open a SSIS file.
Do you have any idea of what the problem is and what should I do to solve it?
It seems that there are some SSIS component missing, how could I get them back?

You are welcome Sylviep,
Based on what I see you want to create BI projects (e.g. a SSIS project), thus it will be enough to install SSDT
which is part of the SQL Server installation media. I do not see why you would re-install SQL Server itself.

  • Unspecified error while installing sql server management studio 2012.

    HI,
I am trying to install microsoft sql server 2012 service pack 1 management studio express. Its throwing "unspecified error".
I am using "sqlmanagementstudio_x64_ENU.exe". Iam using .net framework 3.5.1.
    Repies will be appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Hello,
I have seen in the past that error and is generally related to remnants
from previous installations of SQL Server. Manually uninstalling the remnants may help as explained on the following resources:

  • Installing SQL Server Management Studio

This has been a very frustrating experience or more accurately numerous receptions of the same experience. Here's the problem.
I have Visual Studio 2010 installed on my 64bit PC.with the version of SQL Server 2008 Express that was packed with the Visual Studio.
I attempted to install the SQL Management Studio (SQLManagementStudio_x64_ENU) and the install failed indicating that I needed SQL Server Service Pack 1.  I downloaded SP 1 run the SSME again with the same result. I then ran the Windows Microsoft update,
which update 13 programs including Visual Studio 2010. I tried to run the install again (for the fourth time) and the results were the same.
    Can anyone suggest a solution?
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Have you installed Visual Studio SP1 as well?
You can refer to the similar thread:

And try updating the SP and SPIndex values to 1 and SPName to SP1 in the following registry keys and check the result
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DevDiv\VC\Servicing\9.0

  • SQL Server Management Studio File Open dialog is very slow to change directories

I am running Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio    10.0.2531.0 on Windows 7 Professional.
I have an intermittent problem with the File Open dialog. Sometimes it works reasonably well, but often it takes a very long time (a few minutes) to change directory. While it is doing whatever it is doing, the dialog and all of SSMS becomes unresponsive
    - I can't even cancel the dialog. It sometimes changes the cursor to an hourglass and sometimes not.
I do not have this problem with any other application.
I can open File Open one time and have this delay for every single directory change or if I open the Look In dropdown then, after closing it I can open it again and it will work with normal delays.
It is slow more often than it is normal.
It makes accessing files very impractical.

    Hi,
10.0.2531.0 is SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 (release April 2009)
No guarantee this will fix your issue, but may be worth testing the latest Service Pack 3 (released October 2011) to see if that helps

  • How to recover deleted attached mdf file from sql server management studio

    Hi everyone
    I've faced very bad problem
I had a mdf file that created in visual studio, and then I had attached this file to sql server management studio and after that, when I wanted to deattach
this file I had a big mistake; and deleted the mdf file; then now this file was deleted from my computer
I test several recovery tools but they can't find deleted mdf file; the volume of the mdf file was more than 2 GB.
Please help me if you can

    Hello,
If you don't have a backup of the database, then it's not really possible to get it back. There are some "Undelete" Tools available for Windows, but when even only one page was overwritten on disk, then it's not possible to recover it.

  • Import multiple files using sql server management studio

Using sql server management studio I want to do 2 things.
    - Import all txt files from a directory as tables into my DB.
    - Add an additional field to each new table which contains the table name.
    Can anyone help me?

There are couple of ways to do it:
    File naming conventions : YourFileName_SystemId.txt
You can create one extra column in table or may be name a table with system id. Then after loading the data you can update that column with the system id.
       components required:
ForEachLoopContainer - To get file and store file name in a variable
Expression Task (if SSIS 2012 or above) or variable expression or script task to seperate file name from systemId
Data Flow Task - to load data
Execute SQL Task - to update last column or specific table based on precedence constraints
Note: You can also add extra column in data flow via
    derived column transformation.
    Ex.:
    Load file via foreach loop
    Split string via seprator
2: Loading different system file in different folder
you can have predefined folder structure ex: SystemId1, SyetemId2 etc and can download respective txt file in their system folder. Then you can easily identity which file belong to which system and then load it to the respective table.
3: Use first row of text file to hold the system value
Use first row to have the system id and then skip row while fetching data.
Note: Then you have to read first row through script task to get the system id.
    hope this will help

  • SQL Server Management Studio - File Encoding

I have been searching the forums for this issue and I haven't found anything on it so I apologize in advance if this issue has already been covered. My eyes are droopy and the coffee supply is low.
Is there a way to always save a file as UTF-8 or ANSI in SQL Server Management Studio? In analyzer you could save as ANSI, etc.

That's very useful feedback.  Could you please file a suggestion on http://connect.microsoft.com/SqlServer?
The product teams use customer feedback to help prioritize future work.  Filing the suggestion on the Connect site does two things:  First, it ensures that your suggestion goes directly into our internal issue tracking system and we don't lose any information.  Second, suggestions from customers carry more weight than those proposed by employees, so filing suggestions on Connect can have a bigger impact on future improvements.

  • Unable to install microsoft sql server management studio 2008 express

When i install management studio 2008 express, throws an error stating that "SQL server 2008 Setup reqiures Microsoft .NET framework from http:.... and then rerun setup.
Can any body help me in this, and also i have installed .NET framework 3.5.
    Thanks.

    Hi sivak_tamilan,
According to your description, we need to verify if you install and enable the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, it is a prerequisite for SQL Server 2008 standalone instance.
In the setup, the SP-bit must be set to “1″, you can do as follows:
Open the registry editor and browse to the key,
Then locate the value SP, double-click it and change it from zero to”1”.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\NET Framework Setup\NDP\v3.5
There is a similar issue about this error, you can review the following article.
    http://www.undermyhat.org/blog/2011/03/resolved-microsoft-sql-server-2008-setup-requires-microsoft-net-framework-3-5-sp1-to-be-installed/
In addition, if you install SQL Server on a computer that is running Windows Server 2012 or Windows 8, you must make sure that you fulfill the minimum requirements. For example, you must apply SQL Server 2008 Service Pack
    3 or a later update.

  • Cannot open table in sql server management studio express

    Hello all.
    I have uploaded a table into sql management studio express. However, when I right click on the table and try and open it, I get an error message saying;

    Error source: Microsoft. VisualStudio.DataTools
Error Message: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation"
Because of this error, I cannot manually edit the table. However, when I write a query running select * from Table X, the table does appear that way.
Any help regarding how to open the table would be very much appreciated!!

  • Opening SQL Server Management Studio causes server to freeze - mouse stops working

I have a virtual server running Windows Server 2012 with SQL Server 2012 on it.  Recently I went to open SSMS and it caused the entire server to freeze.  I can't click on anything- nothing in SSMS, on my desktop, my taskbar, or anywhere else.
All I can do is close the remote desktop window, log in as a different user and restart the server to get it to unfreeze.  I found that I can use keyboard arrows for basic navigation within SSMS and the Enter key to Connect to the database but that's
it.  I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software with no luck.  Event Viewer doesn't log any errors.
We use this server for GIS data so ESRI's ArcSDE programs are also running on the machine- they are acting buggy for some users but not others.  I don't know if this is related.  We've also been having issues with the backups from vRanger which
have caused random server crashes.  Our Server/Network Admin has temporarily disabled backups.  I'm afraid the instability has messed something up at a deeper level but I don't know where to start looking.  Any advice would be appreciated.
    Christina

The GIS people have wanted to have all their software running directly on the server, including SSMS, based on recommendations from their ESRI consultant.  I will ask again why this is necessary.
No matter what the consultant says, you can always connect to the server from another machine. (Unless the instance is configured to not accept remote connections.)
While waiting for the server admin to increase the memory of the VM, you can connect to the server with SQLCMD from the command line and issue these commands:
EXEC sp_configure 'max server memory', 2000
    RECONFIGURE
    go
This restricts how much memory SQL Server can consume, and you should now be able to run SSMS on the server. The performance of SQL Server may suffer, though.
When you get more memory, run the commands above again, but with 6000 instead of 2000.

  • Can SQL Server Management Studio be installed free if no SQL instance is installed on the deveopers PC?

I'm having a disagreement at work concerning SQL Server 2012 Developers Edition.  Our developers have the full software installed but just as many users have only installed the client tools. The Dev Edition is really cheap but the person
in charge purchasing said they talked to MS and that we can install the client tools on any PC we want.

what matters is the license to connect to the server SO provided that the server I was connected
to had a CAL assigned to me or it was CPU licensed then all is well, as the client tools aren’t licensed themselves

  • Acrobat Pro X fails to open PDF files after new install

    Hi
We have installed Adobe Design Premium CS5.5 and the issue we have is that when you try to open a PDF document directly nothing happens, the egg times displays for 1-2 seconds then disapears. We have to open Acrobat Pro from the start menu and let it open, then close it again, when we then try again to open a PDF document directly it now opens.
Why wont Adobe open the document directly without having to open the program first?
We are a school and have Adobe Design Premium installed on 500 computers.
    Thanks

Usually related to file associations in Windows. Right click on the PDF and select the Open With option and select Acrobat. Be sure to check "always open with."

  • Need help installing sql server 2012 on windows server 2012 core

    Hi Guys
I am having trouble installing sql server 2012 on windows server 2012 core. I am doing this on VM and my VM is not connected to internet.
This setup is part of preparing lab for sql serve exam 70-462. I would really appreciate your help.
I am including the links to the log files that were generated after installation. There are following 2 files
    Component Update and
    Detail_Global_Rules
    Thanks

    Hi
    iworkonline,
Regarding to your original question, you can work around it according to Prashanth’s post or unclick the “Include SQL Server Product Updates" checkbox when installing SQL Server on your VM.
Regarding to your second question, I make a test using TechNet Virtual Lab and everything works as expected . Below are my steps.
    1. Choose Web client after laughing the Lab.
    2. Choose SQLONE machine and “OPEN CHARMS” as follows, then search SQL Server Management Studio, use it to connect to the default instance (which has been installed in the lab).
From your description, you get error message “Device not ready”. Could you please post more details? Are you installing SQL Server 2012 on the TechNet Virtual Lab?
