In Circuit Test (ICT) in Teststand

Hello Community,
I am using NI PXI equipment with Dev Suite 2012 with Teststand/Switch Executive for a dual stage test fixture (ICT & FCT).
Are there any methods or software by NI or third parties for developing the ICT portion of my test process easier? NI does a great job with functional test, but is there a good way to do ICT?
Currently I am using a DMM, Switch Card, and Guard Amp. Writing a bunch of lines of code in teststand to toggle the switches on the card. Was wondering if there was a simpler way.
Thank you,
Kevin

Go to Solution.

I would like to be able to read the values from an excel spreadsheet into a VI. Create a Teststand Pass/Fail Sequence with one line of code using the VI.
The VI will have a For Loop that runs down the list of my spreadsheet. It will read R1 from the list, toggle the switches and guard amplifier on for R1 at the specified test points, take a measured reading, compare the measured value to the value range (900 to 1100 ohms), and return a result of pass or fail.
Example Spreadsheet:
ID
Value
Test Point 1
Test Point 2
Type
R1
1.00k
TP1
TP2
Resistor
R2
10.0k
TP3
TP4
Resistor
My reasoning behind this is to standardize an ICT procedure with teststand. To be able to add and edit resistors or capacitors to be tested straight into the spreadsheet instead of the method I am doing now which is time consuming and messy. For each resistor I want to test it takes me about 5 lines of code to setup in teststand...
Connect Switches
Connect Guard Amp
VI Numeric Limit Test
Disconnect Switches
Disconnect Guard Amp
I am open to suggestions, if there is a better way to do ICT or a way to speed up the process & setup of those 5 lines above? It just seems like doing ICT with NI Equipment is tedious.

  • How can I make a custom one-line-per-test rpt using TestStand?

I have written a 1-line-per-test report in another LabView application.  How can I do the same within TestStand 4.0?  I would like to display the usual information:  Description, Measurement Reading & Units, Pass/Fail, Lower Limit, and Upper Limit all in a concise, one line rpt.  Isn't most of this data available within TestStand?

I would have figured this to be a pretty common use case, so I was wondering if anyone has made/edited a report sequence that does this?
For example, the default report text looks something like:

  • I want to write a program in LabView then pass the test results to teststand to check if it pass or fail without displaying the test stand program,

I want to write a program in LabView and create an execute but I want to be able to pass test results to test stand to find it the unit pass ar fail the test then save the data to a database. How would i go about it.

What's confusing is your statement that you want to do this "without display the test stand program". You can minimize the TestStand UI to the task bar but if you don't want TestStand to be running, how can TestStand evaluate the result. Explain a little more please.
In the message body of your post, you just say you want to create a LabVIEW exe and pass the results to TestStand. What I would recomend is that instead of an exe, you create a dll and use TestStand's DLL adapter to call it and return the results. TestStand will evaluate it and do the logging.

    Merci d'avance,

  • Converting Mediator test plans to TestStand sequences, what tools and calls are available to do it programatically?

With over 200 test plans to convert, as well as new ones the customer may generate, it will be neccesary to write a converter, unless someone else already has? I'd prefer to work either in c/cvi or vb - what calls/tools are available to generate steps and sequences?

    Hi Bob,
the best starting point for generation of sequences programatically is the API help.
There's an example program in the sequence builder tool directory in the teststand\examples directory which uses this to get the sequences built.
National Instruments has a TestStand course on customisation that has an exercise on sequence generation which is done as a sequence, using API calls to the TS engine, so it could be worth at least contacting your local sales engineer to purchase a copy if you don't have the time to attend the course itself.
Also, the following links may prove useful...
    TestStand Customisation Techniques
Create Sequence Files(TS 1.0 but the principle still applies)
    Adding New Steps and Sequences
Although you can easily (relatively) generate your sequences, there is a licenseing issue involved. (This is mentioned in the second link above) TestStand has 3 different licenses. One is for distribution, so you can target a machine with an operator interface and the TestStand engine and your sequences you've built, but if you want to target a machine that involves generating sequences on the fly (say based on your mediator test plans) so it happens automatically, that can fall into the development license. Talk to your sales engineer about the implications of this for your particular integration. (The
third license is a debug license)
    Hope that helps

  • How sharing a COM object with severeal test dlls in teststand

I have several tests (dlls) accessing a DAQ board (not VI compliant) thanks to a COM object. I would like to keep one instance of this object, passing its reference to each test dll, instead of creating one in each test. How can I do that with TestStand?

You can do one of two things to store a reference to the COM object in the context of TestStand so that you can pass it to successive steps in order for them to all use the same object instance.
First, if you create the object in TestStand with an ActiveX Automation Adapter step, the method call to instantiate the object should return a reference to the object. If you designate an activex reference type local variable as the property to receive the reference during the creation operation, you should be able to pass this into methods that use IDispatch* parameters, or you can use the TestStand API to access the TestStand variable instead.
The second scenario is very similar, in that if you don't create the object in TestStand but inside of a dll instea
d, you can simply pass the parameter back from a function into a TestStand activex reference property variable or use the TestStand API inside of the dll to set the value of an activex reference property to the IDispatch of the object.
To better understand how to use the ActiveX Automation Adapter and ActiveX Reference Variable Types, look at Chapter 13 of the TestStand User Manual under the section entitled "ActiveX Automation Adapter". I have also attached an example to this post that uses the ActiveX Automation Adapter and ActiveX reference datatype in a sequence that writes data to a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and generates a chart from the data.

  • What's the best Preferred Execution System setting for parallel testing run from TestStand

I configured what vi's I think need to be reentrant, but I am not sure what choice for "Preferred Execution System" is best for the vi's in my TestStand sequence that's going to run in parallel.  Can anyone advise?
    Thanks!

    Hi mike_22,
This option should not matter unless you have a LabVIEW VI with parallel code blocks.  If this is the case, you can set your VI to Other 1 or Other 2.  Please take a look at this knowledgebase for further explanation.

  • Teststand automatic test report printing using LabView workaround

I tried the LabView workaround for the automatic printing of test reports in TestStand (see email message below).
It will work if I set the URL to a specific HTML TempReport.  However, TestStand is configured to generate a unique test report for each UUT.  So, in the test report directory there are xml reports and the occasional HTML report, example TestReport_00104.html.  Not sure then what to set the URL to?
Note:  Your reference number is included in the Subject field of this message.  It is very important that you do not remove or modify this reference number, or your message may be returned to you.
    Hi Bill,
    Thanks you for your reply.
Right ok. Well, if you are interested in the LabVIEW workaround, I can send this to place it in your modified sequential model.
The workaround works as desired. It does it all automatically. I have set it to not prompt the user for the print dialogue but this can be easily changed. Therefore, for any example program in Teststand, if it is based on the modified sequential model, an HTML style report will be printed on the default printer automatically.
It needs to be placed in the following location:
Within the Sequential Model, within 'Single Pass>>Print Report' do the following:
    - Replace all the 'Main' steps (Navigate to HTML, Print HTML File & Close IE Browser) with the LabVIEW function call.
    - This one function call will do all the steps above at once.
NOTE: In the LabVIEW VI, you will need to select the correct directory where the new html files are being created. Otherwise the print function will not work. This is called URL. Make you sure you have checked this.
For ease of understanding I have included these steps in a word document with screen shots.
As I do not know which version of LabVIEW you might have, I have attached three versions of the .vi file; 2012, 2011 and 2010.
In regards to the mention of Teststand not having built in functionality for automatic printing of reports, unfortunately this is the case.
I hope this will be a sufficient workaround for you.
If you problems implementing this solution, please ask me for further information. However, it should be fairly simple to do.
Just to inform you, I will be out of the office from 12.45pm today for the rest of the week on annual leave.
I will be back in the office on Monday 14th January 2013, should you have any further queries.

Print HTML file from LabVIEW.zip ‏39 KB

    Hi Bill,
    I managed to implement this.
In the sequential model I added a LabVIEW action after 'Add Root Tags To XML Report'
As URL I use a sequence local: Locals.ReportFilePath
I points to the ML report in my case and then the VI works fine.
However I'm looking for extra functionality and that is waiting untill printing is completed.
Can you help me on that ?

  • Is there any differnce between the Numeric Limit Test source code from TestStand 3.0 to TestStand 3.1? How to get the source code for the Numric Limit Test for both the versions?

I need to know the differnece between the Numeric Limit Test between the TestStand version 3.0 to 3.1. If there is any differnec in the source code how to find it out? If somebody has the code can you share it?
    Thanks,
    Jeyan

    Hi,
I don't believe there are any differences between the two versions. But you can check the source code for the Numeric Limit Test in TestStand\Components\NI\StepTypes\CommonSubsteps. But the main part of the step is the Code Module and this bit the users supplies this.

  • Deployment teststand error (labview test - sequence context)

    Hello,
I need help by deploying my workspace to the deployment(target)computer. That is what I have done:
    - i create a workspace, in this workspace are different sequence files and the vi´s which i have created.
    - then i use the deployment tool (teststand) and deploy the workspace to a directory in the network.
    - after that i copy the modified SequentialModel.seq to the target maschine.
    - now if i want start the sequence file an error occured. Teststand can`t start my vi´s because it can`t find files like LabVIEW Test - Sequence Context, TestStand - Set Property Value (Boolean Array). Choosing the path of the file in the search directory doesn`t help.
Maybe i have made an error with the deployment tool?! How is the right way to deploy in a network without using an installer. Iám using teststand 3.0.
    thankyou
    Schwede

    Hi Schwede
If you want to deploy your Sequence File and the Processmodell you have to copy first your original Processmodell from the NI folder to the user folder.
Than open the deploy-tool and load your workspacefile. Mark the point "deploy files in Teststand user directories" and define the image path. Don't mark the "create installer" field.
You will get and image folder with several subfolder.
In the target subfolder you can find your sequencefile. In the Teststand subfolder you can find your customized Processmodell or Operator Interfaces. Attention, please use relative paths when you create your workspacefile.
    hope this helps

  • How to externally trigger the execution of TestStand with a start and abort button through a digital interface?

    Hello,
I'm Currently evaluating TestStand as an alternative for an in-house developed Test Sequencer.
To start our own Test Sequencer we use a small box, connected to a DIO board. The box has a start button and an abort button. The box also has a pass, a fail and a running led.
The interface with this box is made via some digital lines of a PCI-DIO-96.
In our own Test Sequencer we have groups named Init, Run, Abort, Exit.
The Init group is executed at startup (only once). It is used to initialize all the HW and SW. -> I guess this is the Pre UUT Loop callback in TestStand.
The Exit group is only executed once at the end of the day when the application is terminated. It is used to free all the used hardware and cleanup all the resources. This probably is the Post UUT Loop Callback in TS.
When a product needs to be tested, the operator presses the "start" button which triggers our own Test Sequencer and the run and abort group are being executed (first the run group, afterwards the abort group).
When the product is being tested the "running led" of the little box lights up to indicate to the operator that the application is running. (only when the run and abort group are running)
The Run group has all the functional tests in it. (MainSequence)
The abort group is used to put everything back in it's original state after the test on this single product is done. (Post UUT)
When executing the tests and something goes wrong (operator gets stuck in a clamper, ...) the operator can still press the abort button and then the execution immediately jumps from the currently executing step in the run group to the first step of the abort group. So, when something goes wrong, immediately the abort group is called.
At the end of the run and abort group, if no errors occured, the "pass led" lights up. If one or more steps went wrong the "fail" led lights up.
This setup can also be used to test multiple product in parallel. At that time all the different parallel testers have such a small box which contains a "start" and "abort" button and a pass, fail and running led. (it is possible that they are all connected to the same PCI-DIO-96 board. )
    My question:
Is it possible to do something similar like this in Teststand? If yes, is there an example available that shows me how to do this in TestStand? (externally trigger the execution of TestStand)
Typically, in the Init group (Pre UUT Loop) the digital interface box gets initialised.
In the Close group (Post UUT Loop) the digital interface box is taken out of scope.
Note: The PCI-DIO-96 board to which the digital interface box is connected will also be used in the rest of the developed application (MainSequence, ...)
What's really important for me is that I can create a process model that all the application developers in our organisation can use. I really don't want any of the application developers (limited software experience) to mess around in all the features of TestStand.
For them it's important that they just add the function DigitalInterfaceBoxInit () in the Pre UUT Loop Callback and the DigitalInterfaceBoxClose () in the Post UUT Loop Callback, and then everything works!
It is important that the appliation developers do not have to create any global variables, other functions, synchronisations, parallel sequences, ... in TestStand. All this needs to be done with a simple call to the DigitalInterfaceBoxInit function.
Thanks in advance for all the help!

    Dennis-
Your application sounds very well suited to TestStand's abilities. I am also quite impressed with your knowledge of how TestStand's architecture is arranged when you are still just considering whether or not to use it.
I think that TestStand would work really well for you in this application. Like you mentioned it will provide you with a form of standardization for your application developers to work from. It also provides the flexibility for you to add your custom routines in many different places. TestStand also makes parallel and batch testing much easier in TS 2.0 so that you could develop one test for your product and execute different instances of it in parallel to test multiple products at once.
As for your specific question about how to c
ontrol TestStand using a DIO board. I think this is very feasible and should not be too difficult. Since TestStand provides you the ability to create a custom operator interface your operator interface could monitor the status of your DIO board and launch/abort executions based on the read values. Usually the executions are launched/aborted when a button on the GUI is pressed however, I do not see any thing different about basing the action on a DI signal vs a mouse click. I am sure your application is more involved than this high level description but from the sounds of it I think it is very possible to do with TestStand.
Based on my experience of building test systems with TestStand and your description of the application, I would feel very confident in using TestStand to achieve all the goals you mentioned. If you have further detailed questions on how one of your features might be implemented, feel free to contact one of our Application Engineers or email us at www.ni.com/ask
and we would be glad to help you.
