In need of system disks for HD repair
The machine's been a little slow lately, so I randomly decided to "verify disk" in disk utility and got this response:
Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
Checking Extended Attributes file.
Checking volume bitmap.
Volume Bit Map needs minor repair
Checking volume information.
Invalid volume free block count
(It should be 1870686 instead of 1866823)
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
Disk Utility stopped verifying “Macintosh HD” because the following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair
I realize that I need to repair the disk from another volume. I purchased this computer 2 years ago from a private seller, and do not have the original system disks. Do I need OS 10.3 to do this since Tiger is only an upgrade? Do I need just the DVD or what? And where can I obtain these disks? Should I just head straight to DiskWarrior instead? Thanks
-mJ
What are the capabilities of the retail disks? Am I able to do a clean install from them if necessary, or would I need disks with my specific build number for that? Some people on craigslist are selling the retail disks for 10.4, but I believe its just the DVD. Ideally I know I should have both disks, but in this event can I be able to buy only the one I need? The only disks that I see sold privately are build-specific sets....just seems a little much to spend 300 bucks for the Tiger box just for volume repair. Just making sure before any purchases. Thanks

Need system disks for MB061LL/A
Does Apple have system disks available for older products? My hard disk failed, I know how to replace it but I need system disks. Is there a third party that has them if not?
The Snow Leopard 10.6.x has recent available browsers, other software and still has support. The Leopard 10.5.8 is harder to keep running if you need Adobe Flash plugin for browsers, and current browsers are harder to find. I have three Macs (one is Intel-MacBook) that run 10.5.8, and only the MacBook can be upgraded.
The value in longer use of the computer is through having Snow Leopard (and its iLife applications - not included in the retail DVD for $20) and perhaps some new RAM chips installed to maximize the MacBook. Another thing with portable computers, is they tend to wear out their hard disk drives quicker than desktops.
However the original included install-restore disc sets that were machine specific to the build series year and model, have a very good to have 'hardware test' on the install disc, and also can be used to repair, reformat, and perform various disk utility actions, also to install the original version OS X and applications to stock. Those discs are part of the computer & should always be included with it.
Hopefully this helps.
Good luck & happy computing! -
Is it possible to get a system disk for my old iMac without the receipt?
I use an iMac at work and it's really slowing down. (10 minutes at least to open any application) I have 3 GB of ram and use only a quarter of my hard drive space. I've looked everywhere for the startup disk to no avail. I've used TechTool Deluxe and it says that the directory needs repair. When I used DiskUtitlity last, it says that the hard drive needs repair and to restart with the system disk and use Disk Repair. If anyone has any thoughts on this matter, I'm all ears.
No receipt is needed assuming they are still available for your vintage machine. All you need is a credit card and the machine's serial number. Then call AppleCare and if they are available they will ship a replacement set for a nominal cost.

I need english recovery disk for M300
hi to all
I need recovery disk for my portege m300
I just have in Italian any one can make disk image from menu
or say me how to get one copy???
ThanksHi,
on official ways it's not possible to get a recovery disk in another language. You can only try to find somebody, who has an english version of the M300.
You can also build up the system by yourself with an english Microsoft Windows CD. The needed drivers and programs can be downloaded from Toshiba's site.

Problem burning backup system disk for 10.6
Finally appreciating the safety added by burning backups of my 10.6 system disks, I created a 7.6gb disk image on my desktop. I don't have Toast Titanium to span the data, so I used Slices to cut it into two files, letting each part fit a standard DVD.
Now, though, Disk Utility won't burn either of them to a DVD.
What am I missing in order to create backup 10.6 disks?
Thanks,
CBIn the line "DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW" the "DL" stands for double layer, so yes, you can burn (write to) DVD-R DL & DVD+R DL disks. Essentially all "SuperDrives" can.
Just FYI, the "DAO" stands for "disk at once," which means you can't burn a DVD & leave it "open" to write anything else to it later. "TAO" stands for "track at once" which means (for CD's only) you can write more than one volume to one CD, until you "close" it with a DAO write.
For DVD's, the closest you can come to TAO is to use -RW or +RW discs, which can be erased -- but the Superdrive doesn't support rewritable DL discs -- I'm not even sure such things exist.
The nomenclature is arcane, so don't feel like the only one who is oblivious to its meaning. It took me a long time to figure this out.

HT3910 I need a recovery disk for my Mac Book Pro for IOs 10.6 Snow lepoard
I have lost my revocry disk for my MAC Book Pro laptop. How can I obtain a new one
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
You may also purchase replacements for the two discs that came with the computer.

Removing raid1 from system disk for Safe Boot & OS upgrade?
I have my system on raid1 and so I can't boot to Safe Mode for OS upgrade.
I'd like to hear opinions & experience about this.
1) Is it possible to
a) delete raid1 in Disk Utility
b) Safe Boot to one of the disks from raid1
c) Upgrade OS
d) rebuild raid1 with upgraded OS
2) Is Safe Boot still good idea for upgrading OS in Leopard?
3) Is deleting & rebuilding raid1 for OS upgrade worth for all the hassle needed?Sorry, I put this post in the wrong place!

Why do I need to Reformat Disk for TM?
Have a new 24" IMAC, running 10.5.2. I have a hard drive that still has 400-500gigs left. When I plugged it in the first time to move images onto my IMAC, Time Machine gave me a warning that in order to use it as the back up drive I would have to reformat to extended and thus lose all my stored files. Why is that and is there a way around it? Why couldn't it just utilize existing space?
Then I figured I'd just buy another drive for Time Machine to back up. But I don't want to leave that drive connected all the time. I'd rather just plug it in and let it back up when it recognizes the disk. Will this work or is TM going to get "confused" with multiple disks being plugged and unplugged (I usually daisy chain them as well_?question 1:
If your external drive is large enough, you can partition the drive.
To partition the external drive, what you need to do is open Disk Utility, select the external drive and go to partition. Select the size of the partition you want and make sure that it is formated correctly. Then you can have Time Machine use only one partition without erasing any of your data on the other.
Question 2:
Time Machine won't get confused and the backups are only working when the drive is connected. Besides, chaining the disks won't do anything more than make your iMac have to work a little bit harder to transfer the data from the port to the external drive. It's faster to have both connected to two different ports than chaining them. -

Create another system disk for Legion/SAM-T1
Hello,
I am creating a new disk using the following command:
Code:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/export/home/ramdisk/0 bs=512 count=4096k
after creating the disk, i tool a ufsdump of a solaris 10 filesytem (disk size 512MB)
Code:
ufsdump -cvf /export/home/ufsdump/sol_orig /
and then restored the dump files onto the newly created 2GB disk (after creating a newfs and mounting that disk to /mnt/sol_2gb):
Code:
ufsrestore -rvf /export/home/ufsdump/sol_orig /mnt/sol_2gb
after that, i installed the boot block on the 2gb disk:
Code:
installboot /usr/platform/sun4v/lib/fs/ufs/bootblk /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s3
where, c0t0d0s3 is the newly created 2gb disk.
then I try to use the 2 gb disk to boot the system just by using the boot command.
This is when the SMF services start to load and after everything is loaded, I get the errors. (PCI SubSystem error)
I am using Legion which is a T-2000 simulator (T-1 processor, sun4v arch). I have attached the config. file for the simulator.
When i boot from the original 512Mb image, there is no issue at all.
Could someone help me with why just copying the file system to a bigger disk maybe causing so much trouble.Does the original boot disk boot from s3 or s0? We usually boot from s0. What is the boot device set to?
Is this the exact error: PCI SubSystem error I'm not familiar with it.
Thanks, Cindy -
Help need on System setup for java programming
HELP BADLY NEEDED!
I recently installed java (jdk version8 152mb) on my HP630 win7 because i want to learn java. But when practising, after using notepad to code samples like "Hello Word" and saving it with .java format, it still cannot run on my pc.
Pls i think i need a complete and comprehensible guide on how to install and prepare my win7 laptop for java programming.
Thanks in anticipationHello,
one suggestion is to ensure your system's environment PATH has the Java installation path included, so that it knows where to look to run Java.
(See attached pix).
1st) Find out where Java was installed to on your system: For example, on my Win7 PC, Java was installed to 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Java' directory.
However, my path to the actual binaries is 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin'; this is the value I added to my system PATH.
2nd) Check what your System's PATH has: You can do this by looking at the Environment Variables under System Properties:
1) Search for Control Panel, then go to System & Security, then to System, then to 'Advanced System settings'.
2) Click on 'Environment Variables...'
3) Under the 'System variables' pane, use the scroll bar to find 'Path', and click on 'Edit...'.
4) Here is where you add your Java path (as noted above): Note that I appended my java path to the existing Path text, taking care to separate the previous path with a semi-colon (';').
For example, this was my existing 'Path': "C:\Program Files\CollabNet\"...and now it looks like this 'C:\Program Files\CollabNet\;C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin'.
5) Click OK, OK, OK out of all those dialogs.
Now..restart your JVM or attempt to run your Java program!.
Good luck.

Need a bootable disk to run repair
I have an older Macbook Pro that is acting kind of buggy (seems to be related to the trackpad responce) I zapped the PRAM, repaired permessions, and verified the disk with Disk Utility, which told me it needed repairs. But I'm having trouble figuring out how to boot it from an external. The computer is currently running snow leopard, which I upgraded using a retail upgrade disk. I tried to rebook from that, but it seems to want to run me through the install again, which I don't want to do. I just want to boot from a disk so I can run Disk Utility. I also have Time Machine backups on an external drive, but that doesn't seem to be bootable either. I probably could dig up my original install disks, but those are on Tiger (or whatever cat preceeded it), so not sure that would work either.
What should I be using to boot from to run Disk Utility? While booted from the installation disc, select Utilities > Disk Utility from the menu bar.

I have repeatedly clicked repair just to have it reopen and then crash again.

I need audio system recommendations for my iMac.
I have a large iTunes library on my iMac and currently listen to it through a Yamaha receiver with two Cerwin-Vega speakers and an Infinity sub. Although the receiver is designed for surround sound, I just use the stereo mode for music. It puts out 130 watts per channel although I use it in a small 12 x 14 office in my home. I would like to upgrade my sound system for the Mac if there is something available that is just killer for this application.
Yes, a dedicated stereo integrated amplifier would have discrete electronic components, as opposed to the "chip" circuitry in your Yamaha surround receiver. I myself use a Denon discrete integrated amplifier and it sounds far more lifelike and images far better than the Denon receiver it replaced. There is a limit as to how far you can improve your sound though in that iTunes songs are recorded and played at less than CD quality and there is no way around that without directly ripping from CD's using a lossless format. So, to sum up, yes you have definite possibilities for improving your listening experience. And I might recommend if you are interested in saving money that you research on http://www.audiogon.com for quality used components sold by other audiophiles who themselves are upgrading. I've purchased and sold on the site for years. It's the eBay of audio only components.
And, Yes, to your Question 1.
Hope this helps
