In Numbers, how can I make a cell reference a constant in a formula?

This is a basic question, but I am not sure of the answer. I am trying to calculate a previous SUM that I have by a column. But when I calculate it, it keeps looking for data in the cells after the SUM that I already have.
In other words, how can I get a constant cells value into my equation?
Any help would be great!
(In excel, I could do it just by placing $ around my cell field. Like H23 would be $H23$. THanks!)

JJ,
Numbers works exactly like Excel in this regard. To change H23 from a reference that will change if the formula is moved to a fixed cell reference, make it $H$23.

Jerry

  • In Numbers, how can I cause one cell to automatically follow a running balance as it moves down a column?

I've developed a checkbook type spreadsheet in Numbers where the running balance moves down the column one row at a time for each check entry. I need to use that current running balance for additional calculations even though it changes rows for each entry. How do I cause the cell that is using this running balance to follow the current balance as it changes rows for each entry? Additional Information - the formula for the result in the running balance column does not display it's result until a check entry is made for that row.

  • Calc: How can I get absolute cell references in tables to work?

Hi, I'm new to Star Office, and have run into a problem in my first spreadsheet.
I have a data table in my spreadsheet.
Some cells in the table need to make calculations based on other cells in the table.
When I sort the table, however, the cell references are made to be incorrect. I expected that I could just use absolute references (e.g. $A$2) and when the table was sorted those references would be updated to refer to the new absolute location of that cell, e.g. $A$10). However, the absolute references are being left literally the same ($A$2) after the sort, making them reference a different row of data than intended. Relative references of course don't work in this situation either (I tried for thoroughness). (I thought Excel behaved the way I expected, but I just tried it in Excel 2007 and it is exhibiting the same behavior as StarOffice Calc.)
I'm also concerned, although I haven't tried it yet, about what will happen when I reference cells in this table from another table using absolute references that the same problem will exist...
So basically, I can't find a way to use absolute references to cells in a table that will persist correctly when the table is sorted. Any suggestions?
    Thanks. Asa

I was able to work around the problem by creating an index column in the table with a unique number for each row of data and using vlookup() to reference the correct row. If there is a more elegant solution I'm still interested :)

OK. Think I've got it now thanks to looking at the short keys and searching for "Full Screen".  The upper left key is "`" which looks like a grave - a slightly angled single quote. But when I look at the "Application" setting for Toggle full screen it is set to "'" - a "normal" single quote.  Sure enough, if I hit the normal single quote key the toggle works.
I have not been anywhere near the hotkeys and can't imagine why anything would change it from a grave key to a single quote - especially as they look almost identical on the screen.  I'm guessing that Adobe changed this (maybe only for international users?)
Anyway I now know how to toggle full screen, although it makes the "Premiere" keyboard with its big purple key for "Toggle full screen" redundant.  Does make me wonder what the shortcut key of "'" or CTRL + "'" gives that I'm presumably missing since it appears to have been remapped.

  • How can i make a cell set a timestamp when I click a checkbox in numbers for iPad?

I am trying to make it so that when I click a checkbox, the cell next to it creates a timestamp.  I have very put of practice making spreadsheets, and this new format is giving me a hard time.
    Thanks for your help!

Under the previous version of Numbers for iOS at least, you could use the loophole/bug in the IF statement that would execute on TRUE, but do nothing if FALSE, if you didn't explicitly set it. This would allow the spreadsheet to have a sense of before and after that would allow for all sorts of time stamping possibilities. In fact, I wrote an entire complex spreadsheet based on this loophole. It worked great!  But I was also aware that Apple would likely close this loophole to make the IF statement conform to their documentation, and sure enough, they did, and now my spreadsheet is utterly useless.
Maybe I'm just stupid, but with this latest update, I don't see any way to hold a static time stamp. I thought it would be doable by some contorted means, but after several hours, I still haven't come up with anything. Pity, too, because it was quite useful.
Would someone please tell me how stupid I am.

  • How can I make one cell search multiple other cells for a string of text and return whether or not the string appeared in the cells searched?

    https://www.icloud.com/iw/#numbers/BAI31boMQXsGKc8NH22BlqWRzbs8PdgWBs-F/2014-15_ Curriculum_Planning_w_CCSS_(Web_Shared)
My document is above, if anyone wants to help this crazy teacher invent a better lesson planner.
Here's my predicament.  The state in which I teach requires teachers to keep up with which of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) their instruction is addressing and when the standards were addressed.  I got the bright idea to do this through a spreadsheet in Numbers because our school is getting iPads this year, so it'd be pretty sweet to be able to assemble all of my lesson plans in one massive spreadsheet.  On the "AP Lesson Plans" sheet, I've got a few weeks worth of lesson plans entered in.  I'm planning on going in and using the drop-down menu next to each lesson plan to add all the CCSS on a per-day basis.  This is simple enough, but here's where I run into a problem.
I want the "AP Standards" sheet to concatenate, in cells D3 through G76, the dates on which a standard was covered.  What I need is some way for, say, Cell D3 to look at the table on the "AP Lesson Plans" sheet and concatenate the dates of every lesson which has the standard in column A (In this instance, RL.11-12.1).  At the end of the day, the functionality I need is that I can enter my lessons and CCSS on the "AP Lesson Plans" sheet and go to the other sheet and see a summary of which standards have been addressed, when, and how often.
If that's as clear as mud, well, I teach literature, not technical writing, so my apologies.  I'm more at home with Jonathan Swift than spreadsheets.  I'll gladly help you help me if you'd let me know what you need to know.  Oh, and to illustrate my knowledge level (just enough to be dangerous), I've left you the formula of my best stab at making cell D3 behave as desired.  It's the gray box on the "AP Standards" sheet.  Yikes.

    Hi Arrdenet,
Congratulations on the nested IFs. I haven't tested that formula, but it is impressive. It will be very difficult to debug if it doesn't work, and I think it would make Numbers very slow.
Here is a different approach. After you enter all the CCSS, add another column with HLOOKUP.
    Edit:
    B2 (and Fill Down)
    A2 (and Fill Down)
    =IFERROR(HLOOKUP(A$1,C2:E2,1,0),"")
HLOOKUP looks for the value in A1 in all the CCSS columns.
IFERROR is to stop the error triangles appearing and returns "" (NULL) instead.
    Then sort by column A.
Not a complete answer, but it might get you started.
    Regards,
    Ian.

  • How do I make a cell reference the condition in a COUNTIF statement?

    I have a formula:
    =COUNTIF(Funds Under Management by Client :: D2:D91,">3.0")
However, I want to replace the condition '3.0' with a reference to another cell eg B2 so that I can play around with different values and have them immediately reflected in the COUNTIF total. Problem is, I can't find the right syntax to achieve this. I want the formula to actually look something like this:
    =COUNTIF(Funds Under Management by Client :: D2:D91,">B2")
Is this possible, and if so, how do I do it? Making the formula refer to a cell saves me from having to manually change 90 odd cells in the spreadsheet every time I want to vary the criteria.
    TIA

  • How can I make a column of sums out of a repeating pattern of 24 changing numbers

How can I make a column of sums out of a repeating pattern of 24 changing numbers in Numbers.
I have a long list of 8760 numbers of which I need to take the sum (and store in a column) of each 24 numbers.

Here's one way. I've reduced the example, taking groups of five numbers from a set of 20. I've used 3 as the data number in all cases to make the sum easily recognizable.
Original column of numbers in Data::column A.
    Data::B2 (and filled down): =QUOTIENT(ROW()+3,5)
This adds 3 to the row number, then divides by 5, returning the quotient and ignoring the remainder.
The result is a 'group number' for each group of five rows.
Sums of each group are reported in the Sums table.
    Sums::A2 (and filled down): =ROW()-1
    Sums::B2 (anf filled down): =SUMIF(Data::$B,A2,Data::$A)
For your example, assuming the 8760 numbers are listed in column A of a table named Data, starting at cell A2:
Add a second column to the table (column B).
In B2 enter the QUOTIENT formula above, with these two revisions:
    =QUOTIENT(ROW()+22,24)
Fill down to all cells in the column.
Provided you have named the first table "Data", both formulas in the Sums table will be as written above. You will need to extend the Sums table to 366 rows (including the Header row) to accommodate all 365 groups of 24.

  • How can I make a row of cells containing 3-digit decimals, who's values resulted from calculations within the spreadsheet, appear as durations of minutes and seconds?

Row 6 in this spreadsheet is the result of Row 2/Row 3 as evidenced by the formula listed while Cell Y6 selected. How can I make the values in this row appear as durations of minutes and seconds rather than 3-digit decimals? For example, rather than appearing as 9.84 I would like the value of Cell Y6 to appear as 9:50 or 9min 50sec. (obviously .84x60seconds 50 seconds). I tried changing the cell formats from "number" to "duration," but no change is made. Using the "duration" format does however work if I am manually entering the decimal value into the cell rather than allowing it to result from another caluclation within the spreadsheet. Is there a solution to this within Numbers '09? You can see why I would want the "pace" displayed in minutes and seconds. Thanks in advance!
    Ryan

    Hi Ryan,
    You wrote:
"The problem is that my "Distance" is a row of automatically generated values resulting from ((Row1/60)*Row 6). Changing the format of Row 1 to minutes causes row two to be expressed as a duration, which obviously it shouldn't because it is a distance. The spreadsheet has to be designed so that all I have to manually input on each entry are Row 1 Values (Time) and Row 6 Values (Average Pace). The rest of the cells must be automatically poulated as a result of formulas."
I'm assuming that where you say "Row 1" in this you mean "Row 2", which is labeled "Time" in the example in the OP.
In the original post, you presented a formula from cell Y6. Replacing the Header labels in that formula's cell reference with the Addresses of the referenced cells, the formula was:
    Y6: =Y2/Y3
In this post, you are saying that Y6 contains entered data: "...all I have to manually input on each entry are Row 1 Values (Time) and Row 6 Values (Average Pace).
    Which is correct?

Aller au menu Scripts , choisir Numbers puis choisir “write_vertically”
Le script colle dans la cellule le mot apès avoir inséré un return entre tous les caractères.
Pour mon usage personnel j'associe un raccourci à ce script grace à FastScripts.

I have created a spreadsheet on numbers for ipad with a list of customers as a drop down menu. How can i make their address appear underneath when I select the customer?
    iselect the customer?

    Hi bazza,
We won't be able to put the address from a formula into the same cell that you enter the customer's name. We can put the address in the cell under the customers name.
First let's take James advice and concatenate the address in the address table.
Here is the formula in G2
    =CONCATENATE(B2&"
    ",C2&"
    ",D2&"
    ",E2)
It shows this way because after I clicked on B2 and typed [&"] (no brackets) I typed option-return
This gives you your new line. Then I typed the closing ". I repeated this for the rest of the address.
Next we want to bring this to your order sheet. I prefer using the two formulas OFFSET and MATCH instead of VLOOKUP.
base tells OFFSETwhere to start counting from. Click A1.
row-offset is for the row. we will use MATCH() -1 to give us the row.
What MATCH does is give you the row number where something is found and you can specify an exact match. I usually construct the MATCH formula first and then cut and paste it into OFFSET. MATCH looks like this: MATCH(A2,Table 1::A,0). A2 is what we are looking for, Table 1A::A is where we are looking (the entire column A), and 0 means we want an exact match. Can you see it inside the OFFSET formula? Notice that we had to subtract 1 from its result.
column-offset tells OFFSET which column A=0 so we want 6.
we ignore "rows", "colomns" we don't need them.
If this seems like too much, just break it down into small pieces.

As a student, you might be able to get Office for Mac from the college bookstore at a substantial discount. Otherwise, I think your best option for documents that need to be shared with Office users is to get one of the free Office clones such as LibreOffice.

  • In Yosemite version of Numbers, how keyboard shortcut for "Merge Cells" can be created?

In Yosemite version of Numbers, how keyboard shortcut for "Merge Cells" can be created?

OK, I've been doing this since CS2 with no need for a script. To hide guides and show preview...
    1) Go to 'Keyboard Shortcuts'
    2) Go to 'Product Area - Tools'. Yes, you'd think it would be in Views! But the buttons for this is at the bottom of the Tool Bar.
    3) Go to 'Commands: Toggle view setting between default and preview'
    4) Click your cursor inside 'New Shortcut' and hit the key you want or type it in. I choose the unused F2 key
    5) Click the 'Assign' button and you are set. Hit the key to switch back and forth.
As for your mouse Zoom, use Power Zoom as described above or just hold down the Alt/Option button in 'Hand' mode and use the scroll wheel to zoom in and out. Not one step but it works!
Now you won't miss Quark at all!

  • How can I make a chart ignore cells until their value is changed from 0?

In the corresponding table, I used conditional formatting to hide zeros in the highlighted row by conditionally changing the text color to that of the table background. However, the zero value's are still represented in the corresponding chart as you can see in the attached photo . How can I make the chart ignore certain cells only until their values are changed from zero? Thanks in advance!
    Ryan

    Hi Ryan,
Leave the cells empty until they're needed, or, if the cells' contents are determined by a formula, revise the formula to insert a null string if the value is zero.
    =IF(your formula = 0, "", your formula)
    Regards,
    Barry

  • HOW CAN I MAKE THE GRIDLINES IN A NUMBERS SPREADSHEET PRINT

I have created a numbers spreadsheet, but when I print it, there are no gridlines.  Because the spreadsheet is a page and a half wide it is hard to follow across to get to the right data.  How can I make the gridline print?

Question asked and answered several times.
Enter the Inspector of Tables and define the borders to fit your needs.

Thanks Eric, but that was already turned on. I just now tried turning it off and on again, no change. Actually, I"m more interested in seeing the names than the pictures. I now only see the phone numbers and generic avatars where pics would be.
