In the memory summary, what is "Other Players?"

Currently I have a Flash program which, in IE9, has a 1GB footprint with 311MB of "Uncategorized" allocations and 541MB of "Other Players."
1) What does the "Other Players" categorization in the memory panel mean?
2) What's the plan for adding additional memory categories to help developers understand what's going on at runtime?
Thanks.

Hi Joe.
A Flash player process can simultaneously play multiple SWFs, either because you are in a browser that has more than one SWF playing (on the same web page, or in different browser windows), or because you are using worker threads. When you look at the Scout session for one of the SWFs, the "Total Memory" number tells how memory the Flash Player process is using, and the "Other Players" category tells how much memory is being used by SWFs other than the one you're currently looking at.
Our highest priority right now is to improve the reporting of memory usage. Watch for some cool new memory features in future release(s).
Best regards,

  • In the Memory summary what is Uncategorized memory?

I'm trying to figure out where a memory leak in our project is. We are using PureMVC.
In the summary of panel under used memory I see that most of the memory is in a category called other/Uncategorized.   What does that category mean? Is it the creation of objects that are not being removed?  Objects with strong listeners attached?  I need a hint

Other than sound clips, server calls, pureMVC notifications, loading of swf assets, handling mouse clicks, and animations  it's not doing much
So if I understand you correctly, "Uncategorized" are various processes or objects created by the FlashPlayer or that might be created by some swcs but not created directly in the regular code?

  • I just got the 8GB nano, what is Other.

I just got the 8GB nano and it is saying that I am only able to sync 3.2 of my 4.4 GB of music because 4.2 GB is taken up by Other. What is this Other and how do I free up the space so that I can have all of my music on my iPod? Thanks.

You have any usually large amount of other.  Sometimes this is the result of failed sync operations with iTunes or damaged files on your iPod that cause stored content to be recognized properly.  The only way to fix the issue is to restore your iPod to factory settings in iTunes.

  • IPOD Freezes Itunes and Memory is full of "Other"

I have an 80g Ipod classic and i recently updated my itunes to version 10.6.1 (7).  After my latest sync, my ipod now has no music but 1/2 the memory is full with "other".  I have reset my ipod several times but the music fails to appear.  I cannot restore my Ipod because when I connect it to itunes, the program freezes up.  The application stops responding and I have to close Itunes all together.  All of my music is saved in my itunes library and I dont want to lose any of it.  Someone please help!!!
I also noticed that since the most recent itunes update I am having problems connecting to the itunes store.  It keeps saying check the internet connection and try again.  My internet works fine but for some reason itunes will not allow me to connect to the itunes store.  PLEASE HELP!!!

I have a similar problem with my 120gb classic, my ipod shows no music or any data but states that memory is full of other, I've tried everything I can think of, rebooting does nothing, connecting to pc freezes itunes and I am unable to access in disk mode either, it shows in my computer but just hangs when trying to access it, so a reformat or restore is not an option, diagnostics shows an error when checking harddrive with HDSMARTdata. I'm sorry to say that I have a feeling that our hard drives are buggered cos surely if you cant access it you can fix it. Very dissapointed with apples service as mine was an under warranty replacent which was resseting itself randomly exessively often, sometimes up to 6 times a day from when I received it, I sent it back within two days stating it had a fault only to have it sent back the next day being told its fine! It is obvious that apple have sent me a replacement ipod with a recycled hard drive which was obviously faulty from day one and now its given up the ghost, I very much regret not holding my ground and demanding a fully working replacement at the time as now I have to fork out for yet another ipod!

  • In tune show all summary activity during sync between nb and apple device. One of the summary is memory space status. Audio mayb3gb, photo 2gb, app with 3gb. What is other? Other consist of what type of file?

In tune show all summary activity during sync between nb and apple device. One of the summary is memory space status. Audio mayb3gb, photo 2gb, app with 3gb. What is other? Other consist of what type of file? It show quite substantial storage capacity?? Anyone can answer what is in other??

"Other" includes data such as contact information and photos assigned to contacts, calendar events, Safari bookmarks/cookies/history, notes created with the Notes application, SMS messages, email stored locally or cached, and 3rd party application data created and stored by the application.
If "other" is more than say .75GB at the most, you had a corrupt sync. Try syncing again and if the problem persists, the recognized fix for this is to restore your iPad.

  • In the summary section in iTunes, what is "other" on my iPhone 5 ?

Using iTunes, In the summary section as I review the contents of my iPhone, there is an "other" category and it is taking up over 11GB of memory in my iPhone.  What is in this category? Do I need it?  If not, how do I reduce or remove it?

  • I received a memory warning on my 2010 MacBook pro. When I open up the about my mac box I see a lot of memory being conumed with "other".  However, when i go into finder and look whjat I have stored, i have difficulty in seeing what is eating up my comput

I have a 2010 MacBook pro with 500 Gig of memory.  Recently, i received a warning about running out of memory space.  When I open up my about my mac icon, I see that "other" is chewing up most of the memory.
    1. When I open finder, I can't seem to see where/why my computer's memory is almost exhausted.
    2. What is the best way to focus on where my memory is being consumed.
    3. What is the safest way of deleting programs/files that are not needed.
    4. In my mail account I see hundreds of messages for email, but they have an OLK designator, if I delete these, does that erase the same message from Microsofy outlook for Mac or is it a redundant file.  These messages do not consume much memory though.
    5. I know there will be a new operating system available this summer, and I am trying to make sure that if I pursue it, I will have sufficient memory available.
    many thanks,

there is an app called daisydisk on mac app store which will help you see exactly where the memory is focused and consumed try using that app and see which folders are using more memory

  • I have a huge amount of my memory used by 'other' than photos and music - to my knowledge, there is nothing there apart from a few songs and photos and 5 podcasts. What could it be? How could I get rid of this 'other' stuff and get the memory back?

  • When I connect my iPod3 to my Imac, the memory shows 13GB or so assigned to "other" (color coded yellow). What is this "other, and can I clear it?

When I connect my iPod3 to my Imac, the memory shows 13GB or so assigned to "other" (color coded yellow). What is this "other", and can I clear it?

The "Other" section on your iPod consists of several different things including album artwork, files you may or could be storing on it externally when using the iPod as a storage disk, the iPod's software/OS, as well as corrupt files that are leftover from failed sync operations with iTunes or are no longer recognized by the iPod's software or iTunes. The size of other is usually quite minute, around less than a GB, sometimes a little more (depending on the amount of media stored on your iPod).
In order to clear this space out, you'll need to restore your iPod to factory settings in iTunes.

  • Windows 7 computer shut down and restarted - no memory of iTunes or other files. I want to sync my iPod 4th Gen. to the computer, but it offers erase-and-sync. Now what?

In a nutshell, the family computer, a Compaq Desktop Windows 7, has been in our family since November 2010-ish. We moved last summer, and nothing happened to it. A couple of weeks ago, the desktop had a whole "recovery-restart-etc" dilemna and no it's like new - no memory of the past files. I had iTunes (7 or 9), for only me, the only iTouch 4th generation user in the house. Basically no other Apple products. Now that I want to fix the computer (restore old photos and applications, etc) as well as move my music to the desktop itself, iTunes tells me I must update my iOS 4....? (never updated the iOS thing) So I try to do so, and iTunes tells me I have to transfer my music files to the library. Fine. I try, and since the iTouch has a previous history with the previous iTunes library BEFORE the major shutdown, it tells me to erase and sync my data! I don't want to lose all my music and repay for it, and I may be smart, but I'm not at the Genius Bar, am I? So can somebody help me? Please? Thank you in advance.

    - Transfer iTunes purchases to the computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - For other music yu will need a third-party program like one of those discussed here:
Copy music from Ipod to new computer...: Apple Support Communities
    - If you have photos synced to the iPod you will need a pair program like TouchCopy or PhoneView. They also do music
    - The connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPOd under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup. The will also update the iOS on the iPod.
