Incompatible, unrelated return types compile error

I have:
public interface ActionControl<C extends ActionControl<C>> extends Control<C>
     public ActionModel getModel();
public interface ValueControl<V, C extends ValueControl<V, C>> extends Control<C>
     public ValueModel<V> getModel();
public interface ActionValueControl<V, C extends ActionValueControl<V, C>> extends ActionControl<C>, ValueControl<V, C>
     public ActionValueModel<V> getModel();
public interface ActionValueModel<V> extends ValueModel<V>, ActionModel
}The 1.5_04 compiler gives me:
"ActionValueControl.java:9: types ValueControl<V,C> and ActionControl<C> are incompatible; both define getModel(), but with unrelated return types
public interface ActionValueControl<V, C extends ActionValueControl<V, C>> extends ActionControl<C>, ValueControl<V, C>"
The getModel() return types may be unrelated in the super interfaces, but the interface being defined clearly returns a type that satisfies both constraints.
This works just fine in Eclipse 3.1M2. How can I get this to work with javac?

It turns out that this is a bug. Sun never replied to my bug submission almost two months ago (internal review ID 593682), but from Eclipse compiler bug discussions it appears that the Sun compiler does not comply with JLS3 9.4.1.

    The first return type is LEGAL, but the secoond type is not because it is not final. Why is this the case? Going from a char to a byte is a down conversion. Why does the compiler allow it for a final variable and dis-allow it for the other variable?

    i am curious... what is this one about ?See section 5.2 of the JLS, regarding assignment conversion:
    Assignment conversion occurs when the value of an expression is assigned (15.26) to a variable: the type of the expression must be converted to the type of the variable. Assignment contexts allow the use of an identity conversion (5.1.1), a widening primitive conversion (5.1.2), or a widening reference conversion (5.1.4). In addition, a narrowing primitive conversion may be used if all of the following conditions are satisfied:
    The expression is a constant expression of type byte, short, char or int.
    The type of the variable is byte, short, or char.
    The value of the expression (which is known at compile time, because it is a constant expression) is representable in the type of the variable.

    I am using AJAX for search functionality in our appication which involves ADF JSF,jspx pages in JDeveloper 10.1.3.3.0. When I compile the following code it compiles fine without error in jdk1.5 but gives compilation error in jdk1.4.2_15.

    Can somebody helpme out what should I change on this line in order to compile this ?
    Thanks in advance,

    Frank,
    Thanks for your response. I removed <String> after LIST and it compiles. But the problem
    is with the following iterator code which is giving error while compiling in jdk1.4.2_15. Trying to find out the equivalent iterator code of the following which is in jdk1.5
    Row row:hits.getAllRowsInRange()

  • Compiler error  type of object in for (Class obj : Items) - why?

    Hi all,
    I'm new to Java generics and am in the process of converting some
    legacy code. I have encountered a particular error which I do not
    understand the reason for, since I think the compiler has enough
    information about the code to work out type information. The following
    code shows a test class which demonstrates this error:
    import java.util.Collection;
    public class Test
        interface Base {}
        static class Impl1 implements Base{}
        public <T extends Base> Collection<T> getCollection(Class<? extends Base> cls)
            return null;
        void someMethod()
            for ( Impl1 obj : getCollection( Impl1.class ))
                // *** compiler complains about the line above ***
                // compiler says:
                // Test.java:22: incompatible types
                // found   : Test.Base
                // required: Test.Impl1
                //        for ( Impl1 obj : getCollection( Impl1.class ))
                //                                        ^
        void someMethod2()
            Collection<Impl1> coln = getCollection(Impl1.class);
            for (Impl1 obj : coln)
                // do something here with obj
    }Why should the compiler complain where it does ( the line marked with
    asterisks) in someMethod, but does not reject the declaration statement
    in someMethod2? I would have assumed both are the same and the
    compiler has the same type information at its disposal to determine
    the correct type.
    Cheers,
    Bonny

    The Java 5 compiler not only looks at a method's name and arguments, but also at its return value in order to determine whether a method is callable and what type should be infered for its type parameters.
    In your example the type parameter T is only used in the declaration of the method's return type. Note that there is no relation between T and the type of the argument cls!
    Thus, the compiles needs to know what type of variable the return value will be assigned to.
    Hence, someMethod2 can be resolved, whereas in someMethod there is no assignment of the return value. (Rather, an implicit call to Iterable.iterator()).
    You can solve this problem by forming a relation between the method's argument, its return type and its type parameter. Just declare the method like this:
    public <T extends Base> Collection<T> getCollection(Class<T> cls)
            return null;
        }

  • Why not compile error on "incompatible interface cast"?

    simeple code here
    class IncompInterfaceTest {
    void doTest() {
    ClassB b = new ClassB();
    InterfaceA a = (InterfaceA)b;
    interface InterfaceA{}
    class ClassB{}
    javac issues "ClassCastException" on runtime rather than compile
    error.
    as i know incompatible type casting may be caught at runtime and
    compiler shows the error.
    but why compiler doesn't do it's job for interfaces? it's just so
    clear to be compile error to me.
    ps. in a case ClassB is final class, compiler issues a error.

    I think i might know something wrong about class, object concept, so I wish you tell me more about it.
    As I though the code below means
    ClassB b = new ClassC();'b' can be an Object of ClassB as a subclass of ClassC.
    'b' IS an Object of ClassC.b is not an object.
    b is a variable that can point to an instance of ClassB or to an instance of any subclass of ClassB.
    >
    so
    b instanceof ClassB == true // as it can be
    b instanceof ClassC == true // as it is
    If b is not null, the first line will always be true.
    If b points to a ClassC or a subclass, the second one will be true.
    It means actual Object(something behind 'b' pointing, i don't know what i call it) is from ClassC to me. (somewhat like c pointer,
    'b' is a bowl that called Object and actuall instance is refered by 'b')No idea what you're saying here.
    if b IS an Object of ClassB
    shouldn't "b instanceof ClassC" is false?If we have C extends B, then...
    B b1 = new B();
    B b2 = new C();
    b1 instanceof B // true
    b1 instanceof C // false
    b2 instanceof B // true
    b2 instanceof C // true
    I Think compiler should be known that instance 'b' hold. No, it doesn't, and it's good that it doesn't, as it keeps the language simpler and more consistent.
    Also, b doesn't hold an instance. It holds a reference to an instance.

  • Compiler Error, Missing Return Statement

    This line of code for the begining of a method that reads a file always throws the compiler error, missing return statement. I can't figure out how to fix it!
    public String[] read(InputStream list) throws Exception {
    Could someone please help?

    you might need to post more code, but basically the
    compiler is complaining because you do not have a
    return statement at the end of your method.
    if you do not have a return statement (with a matching
    return type) then the compiler will complain. If you
    don't understand this then post the code to your
    method and we can get it fixed.
    public String[] read(InputStream list) throws
    Exception {
    String[] stringArray;
    return stringArray;
    The code is the most complex I have written so far but here is some of it. (the begining and the end)
    public String[] read(InputStream list) throws Exception {
    if (list != null) {
    String[] stringArray = null;
    try {
    while {
    //add strings to string array
    }//end of while
    return stringArray;
    }// end try
    catch{
    }//end of method

  • Compile error: Eclipse confuses Type with Window.Type

    Hi there,
    I'm using Eclipse Luna (Version: Luna Service Release 1a (4.4.1)) and JDK 1.8.0_31.
    Our projects are build with Maven. Maven build works without any problems and also our Netbeans users do not have any issues.
    But Eclipse shows compile errors and it seems, that it confuses the generic Java Type with java.awt.Window.Type which was introduced with Java 1.7.
    I created the following minimized example, which reproduces the compile problem.
    This class creates a instance of MyDialog which uses the generic Java Type:
    public class TypeTest {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    String str = new String();
    MyDialog<String> dialog = new MyDialog<String>();
    String x = dialog.getValue(str);
    And this is the implementation of the dialog of type Type:
    import javax.swing.JDialog;
    public class MyDialog<Type> extends JDialog {
    public MyDialog() {
    super();
    public Type getValue(Type value) {
    return value;
    Eclipse persists that for getValue in MyDialog the Type is a Window.Type, which is wrong!
    This is the compile error message:
    The method getValue(Window.Type) in the type MyDialog<String> is not applicable for the arguments (String)
    Since it works without any issues for the maven build and the netbeans users, it seems to me that this is an Eclipse issue or bug? Or can someone give me a hint, how this can be solved?
    Thanks and kind regards,
    Daniel

    I just found that this question has never been answered, and from a cursory look I wasn't actually sure if this is a bug or not.
    Turns out I already wrote a little "essay" on what seems to be the same issue, see https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=396378#c6
    Bottom line: JLS doesn't seem to specify how to interpret / handle a conflict between an inherited member type and a same-named type parameter.
    This seems to impliy that both implementations, javac and ecj - although different - are both valid wrt JLS.

  • Generics (return type error)

    Hi to everyone, I'm new around there!
    I have 2 questions to ask:
    I tryed to implement a generic tree inside of wich I created a "search" method.
    This method needs the method "compareTo" of the class "Comparable" to compare nodes, so the tree class requires a bound and the header is the following:
    public class BTNodeGen <T extends Comparable>
    The problem is that in this whay the search method returns a Comparable instead of a generic type. The method is the following:
    public <T extends Comparable> T search(T el)
              if (el.compareTo(key)==0)
                   return(el);
              else if((el.compareTo(key)<0) && (left != null))
                   return ((T)left.search(el));
              else if(right != null)
                   return ((T)right.search(el));
              else
                   return null;
         }This method works and returns a T only because I added some downcast to T before the return, otherwise it gives a compile error because it is returned a Comparable where is expected a T.
    How can I do to avoid downcasts (that aren't so much correct for a OO language...)?
    Can you help me?
    A last question: what changes between the following header of the method search:
    - public <T extends Comparable> T search(T el)
    - public T search(T el)
    and between the following class header
    - public class BTNodeGen<T extends Comparable>
    - public class BTNodeGen<T extends Comparable<T>>
    Thanks for all

    All two methods (Malvolio and carr_onstott) works fine, thanks a lot!
    I had to modify the header of carr_onstott's method with:
    public <T extends Comparable<T>> T search(T node, T root)
    because it gives 2 errors, one of wich is that:
    D:\UNI\Progetti\MP\1\BTNodeGen.java:191: > expected
        public <T extends Node, Comparable<T>> T search(T node, T root)
                                          ^Why it gives that error?
    Thanks to Malvolio I understood what was my fault: in the sons declaration I left "<T>".
    In fact with
    public BTNodeGen<T> left, right;
    it gives no type error and I don't need downcasts.
    I always tried to pass in the key value as parameter, but without the correct son's declaration it didn't work.
    When I finish to test deeply the entire structure I'll post the results and all the structure's code.
    Thank you very much, I was lost without you!

  • C# compiling error: 'System.Array' does not contain a definition for 'Select' and no extension method 'Select' accepting a first argument of type 'System.Array' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)

    Hello experts,
    I'm totally new to C#. I'm trying to modify existing code to automatically rename a file if exists. I found a solution online as follows:
    string[] allFiles = Directory.GetFiles(folderPath).Select(filename => Path.GetFileNameWithoutExtension(filename)).ToArray();
            string tempFileName = fileName;
            int count = 1;
            while (allFiles.Contains(tempFileName ))
                tempFileName = String.Format("{0} ({1})", fileName, count++);
            output = Path.Combine(folderPath, tempFileName );
            string fullPath=output + ".xml";
    However, it gives the following compilation errors
    for the Select and Contain methods respectively.:
    'System.Array' does not contain a definition for 'Select' and no extension method 'Select' accepting a first argument of type 'System.Array' could be found
    (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)
    'System.Array' does not contain a definition for 'Contains' and no extension method 'Contains' accepting a first argument of type 'System.Array' could be
    found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)
    I googled on these errors, and people suggested to add using System.Linq;
    I did, but the errors persist.
    Any help and information is greatly appreciated.
    P. S. Here are the using clauses I have:
    using System;
    using System.Data;
    using System.Windows.Forms;
    using System.IO;
    using System.Collections.Generic;
    using System.Text;
    using System.Linq;

    Besides your issue with System.Core, you also have a problem with the logic of our code, particularly your variables. It is confusing what your variables represent. You have an infinite loop, so the last section of code is never reached. Take a look
    using System;
    using System.Collections.Generic;
    using System.Linq;
    using System.Text;
    using System.Threading.Tasks;
    using System.IO;
    namespace consAppFileManipulation
    class Program
    static void Main(string[] args)
    string fullPath = @"c:\temp\trace.log";
    string folderPath = @"c:\temp\";
    string fileName = "trace.log";
    string output = "";
    string fileNameOnly = Path.GetFileNameWithoutExtension(fullPath);
    string extension = Path.GetExtension(fullPath);
    string path = Path.GetDirectoryName(fullPath);
    string newFullPath = fullPath;
    string[] allFiles = Directory.GetFiles(folderPath).Select(filename => Path.GetFileNameWithoutExtension(filename)).ToArray();
    string tempFileName = fileName;
    int count = 1;
    //THIS IS AN INFINITE LOOP
    while (allFiles.Contains(fileNameOnly))
    tempFileName = String.Format("{0} ({1})", fileName, count++);
    //THIS CODE IS NEVER REACHED
    output = Path.Combine(folderPath, tempFileName);
    fullPath = output + ".xml";
    //string fullPath = output + ".xml";
    UML, then code

  • An XJC compilation error - Could not load class (..) for type cvsversion

    I've got a strange compilation error using NetBeans 4.0 (I'd guess the version does not matter here) and Ant 1.6.2. When the following task is executed,

    </target>

    That was a great finding from you. Thank you.
    I followed your alternative approach and updated the ant.jar file. The "Could not load class..." error went away but the stack trace still remains. Now I am clueless again since I have ant on the debug mode and can't find any more useful info.

  • Warning: Type created with compilation errors. sql : oracle 11gr2

    I'm trying to create a supertype customer service and subtype agent and supervisor, so they can inherent values however when I try to run this in oracle sql: a message comes up
    Warning: Type created with compilation errors.
    What is wrong with the code below?
    Create or replace type customer_s_type as object ( csID number, csName varchar(15), csType number ) NOT FINAL;  Create or replace type supervisor_type UNDER customer_s_type ( title varchar (10) );  Create or replace type agent_type UNDER customer_s_type (title varchar (10));  Create table supervisor of supervisor_type ( CONSTRAINT supervisor_PK PRIMARY KEY (csID));  Create table agent of agent_type (CONSTRAINT agent_PK PRIMARY KEY (csID));  create table customer_service( csID number(10), csType number(10), constraint supervisor_pk primary key(csID) );

    Wile creating TYPE you need to terminate with a back slash (/) semi colon does not work.
    Try like this
    create or replace type customer_s_type as object ( csid number, csname varchar(15), cstype number ) not final
    create or replace type supervisor_type under customer_s_type ( title varchar (10) )
    create or replace type agent_type under customer_s_type (title varchar (10))

  • Error 136 Functions that can be compossed must declare a return type

    Hello,
    I have downloaded the EF Final Release driver and Im working with Oracle 11g express.
    I have the following Procedure:
    PROCEDURE ProductosPedido(
    Datos Out SYS_RefCursor) IS
    BEGIN
    OPEN Datos FOR
    SELECT Nombre,
    TO_NUMBER(Precio * (SELECT SUM(unidades)
    FROM DETALLES_PEDIDO
    WHERE PRODUCTO = PRODUCTO.ID)) Importe
    FROM PRODUCTO;
    END;
    And the following config section:
    <oracle.dataaccess.client>
    <settings>
    <add name="System.Productospedido.RefCursor.Datos" value="implicitRefCursor bindinfo='mode=Output'"/>
    <add name="System.Productospedido.RefCursorMetaData.Datos.Column.0" value="implicitRefCursor metadata='ColumnName=Nombre;BaseColumnName=Nombre;BaseSchemaName=System;BaseTableName=Producto;NativeDataType=nvarchar2;ProviderType=NVarchar2;DataType=System.String;ColumnSize=50;AllowDBNull=true;IsKey=false'" />
    <add name="System.Productospedido.RefCursorMetaData.Datos.Column.1" value="implicitRefCursor metadata='ColumnName=Importe;NativeDataType=number;ProviderType=Decimal;DataType=System.Decimal;AllowDBNull=false;IsKey=false;ColumnSize=8'" />
    </settings>
    </oracle.dataaccess.client>
    I have imported succesfully in my EF Model, but when I try to consume the Procedure it gives me Error 136 Functions that can be compossed must declare a return type
    Any solutions?
    Thanks and best regards!

    A stored procedure does not have a ReturnType, therefore IsComposable="false" and it cannot be used in LINQ queries.
    This limitation is imposed by EF and not by ODP.
    You may want to create a stored function which has a ReturnType ref cursor, and include this stored function into your model. Then, under the same namespace, you create a class with a "stub" method/function and use EdmFunction() to map this stub to the stored function. For example,
    class myFuncClass
    [EdmFunction("Model.Store", "MY_STORED_FUNC_1")]
    public static <your_complex_type_or_DbDataRecord> MyFunc_1(int? column1, ...)
    throw new NotSupportedException("Direct calls are not supported");
    You should be able to call myFuncClass.MyFunc_1(x) in your LINQ query. Your stored function MY_STORED_FUNC_1 will be called in the generated query.

  • Compile Error: missing return statement

    anyone knows why the following program yields compile error "missing return statement??"
    class LengthTest
         public int stringLength(String s)
         {     int len = s.length();
              if (len <= 5) return 5;
              else if (len <= 10) return 10;
              else if (len <= 20) return 20;
    //          else return 30;
    If I add "else return 30" statement, then it can stop the error. Any ideas??

    You might know that the string length will never be more than 20, but the compiler does not. So it forces you to supply a return statement that will be executed no matter what the string length is.

  • Compile error in hidden module: Essbaselogon. This error commonly occurs when code is incompatible with the version, Platform, or architecture of this application

    Hi,
    I am getting below wrror while accesing the Ecel:
    compile error in hidden module: Essbaselogon. This error commonly occurs when code is incompatible with the version, Platform, or architecture of this application

    IIRC essbase is a financial reporting add-in (Hyperion, or something similar?).
    This message is telling you that the add-in is not compatible with your current software. You should check with the vendor who provided the essbase add-in. Tell them what version of windows and Excel (and maybe Hyperion) you are using, and get a compatible
    version from them...
    If you do not need or run essbase/hyperion/etc then you should just remove/disable the add-in. If it doesn't show in your add-in menu, then you may have to do a repair installation or re-install Excel
