Inconsistent Actions With "Dim Screen Brightness" Key (F1)

On the MacBook Pro, the F1 key is automatically mapped to dim the screen brightness. However, sometimes when I press this key, the screen shuts off (or at least goes to the lowest brightness setting) and other times it just goes down a single brightness point.
I can't figure out why it does one thing sometimes and another thing other times. Is there some logic afoot here? Or just whatever MacOS feels like on the day?
thanks,
tom

Could this be due to the present brightness of the screen or are you saying it could be at 90% brightness, then you press the F1 key, and the backlight turns off?
If it is dark in the room, the screen can be at its lowest setting, then pressing F1 will turn off the backlight.

  • 10.8.4 Screen Brightness Keys No Longer Work

I ran updates this morning and I assume it updated to 10.8.4 from the app store updates tab.
After this update and booting back up the screen brightness keys no longer work. F1 and F2 keys do nothing and they worked fine before the update.
Anyone else experiencing this? If so know a way to fix it?
    Thanks
    Patrick

I have been having the same issue and even with updates have continued to have the problem. I was able to find a chck box under the keyboard settings that I never noticed before. When checked it only allows you to use the function keys on the top of the keyboard when pressing the fn (function) key. Simply unchecking this (not sure how it got checked in the first place) solved the issue immediately.

  • Reset SMC but Screen Brightness Keys still don't work

    hi all.
i noticed after squinting at the screen all day yesterday that my screen brightness keys F1 and F2 on my mac pro keyboard are not working.
first thing i did was look in the UI for some kind of manual setting like for the Sound and i was not able to find one so the screen is still a bit dark for my needs.
then i /unchecked/ the "Use Function Keys as..." box in the Settings in case something was screwed up or changed there.
then i reset the SMC controller which i basically did by default (as i understand it) by shutting down the computer and unplugging it overnight during a thunderstorm.
now i am back at trying to solve this and i am wondering if i should reset the PRAM which i guess i will do but i don't want to have to bother with resetting all the settings on this if i don't have to.
any ideas on what may be going on? i have a 23" cinema display and a Mac Pro 1,1.

Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    Summary
In some situations, you may need to reset your computer's SMC.  Learn how to identify these conditions and reset the SMC.
    Products Affected
    Desktop Computers, Portable Computers
Note: It is possible that the SMC could encounter an issue that may cause unusual system behavior typically related to the symptoms described below. In some cases, resetting the SMC may be the only correct method to resolve the issue, however, an SMC reset should only be attempted after all other standard troubleshooting has been performed.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC.  Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
If your Mac appears to be running normally but isn't responding, force the computer to shut down by pressing and holding the power button for 10 seconds. Note: You will lose any unsaved work in any open applications.  For Mac portables experiencing issues related to the MagSafe power adapter and/or battery, try:
Unplug the MagSafe power adapter from the Mac and the wall power socket for several seconds.
Shutdown the Mac. Physically remove and re-insert the battery (if it's removable) and startup the Mac.
If the issue is still not resolved after following the troubleshooting items above, an SMC reset may be necessary.  After performing normal troubleshooting, these symptoms may indicate that an SMC reset may be necessary:
    Fans
The computer's fans run at high speed although the computer is not experiencing heavy usage and is properly ventilated.
    Lights
The keyboard backlight appears to behave incorrectly (on Mac computers that have this feature).
The Status Indicator Light (SIL) appears to behave incorrectly (on Mac computers that have an SIL).
Battery indicator lights, if present, appear to behave incorrectly (on portables that use non-removable batteries).
The display backlight doesn't respond correctly to ambient light changes on Mac computers that have this feature.
    Power
The computer doesn't respond to the power button when pressed.
A portable Mac doesn't appear to respond properly when you close or open the lid.
The computer sleeps or shuts down unexpectedly.
The battery does not appear to be charging properly.
The MagSafe power adaptor LED doesn't appear to indicate the correct activity.
    System Performance
The computer is running unusually slowly although it is not experiencing abnormally high CPU utilization.
    Video
A computer that supports target display mode does not switch into or out of target display mode as expected.
A computer that supports target display mode switches into or out of target display mode at unexpected times.

  • W510 Screen Brightness Keys Disabled

    Hi,
I often hibernate my W510 and some times when I start her up again, the brightness function keys refuse to work. Other function keys seem to work ok. It's a real pain if I'm trying to conserve battery and the brightness is on full (notably it doesn't automatically switch to a lesser brightness either when this fault occurs).
    Anyone else experience this?
    Regards
    Andy Wu

Another thing to note besides the fact that this only affects the brightness controls, is that the controls are affected regardless of whether I am plugged into AC power when I bring my laptop out of hybernation.  Also, rebooting the system doesn't fix the problem.  I have to physically shut off the system and power it back on to resolve the problem.  I don't need to remove the battery, but the system does need to be completely turned off.
Does anyone know if the Lenovo techs are aware of this problem?

  • Inconsistant actions with the update script

Ok so I'm working on a script to send a email after X number of days (I asked this before and hit problems with it even after I had help), and I've been trying to chip away at it and I notice something that made no sense (Unless I'm missing something). I have two if statements to check if it's time to send a email (One for the amount of days that pass, and another to lock it out after the first time it sends a email). Problem is even that UCM doesn't seem to care about the fact that dateCurrent() is not greater then lastEntryTs even though doing the test it works fine, yet sitting in the workflow it doesn't seem to care.
The code is pretty much this
    <$if formatDateWithPattern(wfGet("lastEntryTs"), "yyMMdd") < formatDateWithPattern(dateCurrent(), "yyMMdd")$>
    <$if xinteger_flag == 0$>
    <$wfMessage="OK this should work now"$>
    <$wfNotify("test_user", "user")$>
    <$wfUpdateMetaData("xinteger_flag", 1)$>
    <$endif$>
    <$endif$>
    <$if formatDateWithPattern(wfGet("lastEntryTs"), "yyMMdd") < formatDateWithPattern(dateCurrent(-1), "yyMMdd")$>
    <$if xinteger_flag == 1$>
<$wfMessage="OK this should work not for the second time"$>
    <$wfNotify("test_user", "user")$>
    <$wfUpdateMetaData("xinteger_flag", 2)$>
    <$endif$>
    <$endif$>
Now if I test this under the test tab it works fine as is (and if I change dateCurrent(+1) it works as it should being a day over what I wanted), and it changes xinteger_flag and that works. But when I put a item in this work flow it doesn't work as it should and I still get a email every hour just like before. Any idea what I'm doing wrong with this script?

when the item enters workflow and after your custom mail notificaiton do you see the xinteger_flag set to 1?
    change <$wfUpdateMetaData("xinteger_flag", 1)$>
    to
    <$wfUpdateMetaData("xinteger_flag", "1")$>
you could also try appending the flag to mail
    <$wfMessage="OK this should work now : " & xinteger_flag$>

  • Odd Screen Brightness behavior

When I toggle the screen brightness keys, the status bar stops to notches short of all the way bright. When I open system prefs and slide the status knob all the way to the right, it stays at about 80%?
    Weird?

    Hi rahzel,
Welcome to the Lenovo Community Forums.
Regarding the Screen Brightness sliders, its not that they are not synching its just that they are not scaled right.  As you have explained the PP (power plan) screen brightness slider when set at half, the corresponding PM (power management) slider is 3/4 full. I tried this with a different lenovo unit (B570) running Windows 7 and its the same thing.  We have no option to change this since this is scaled by Windows 7.
The Lenovo Energy management It just gives you the option to toggle from the 3 power plans listed.  Regarding the On screen indicator, I may suggest that you try to uninstall and reinstall the Lenovo Energy Management program.  Check to see if this addresses the Onscreen indicator problem.
Let me know if this helps.

  • Problem with matrix/screen in Qosmio F55-Q502

    Hello
For a few weeks I have strange problem with matrix/screen in my laptop.
The matrix flickers very often - no matter if power cable is plugged or not.
The screen is full bright and suddenly it starts to blink - it is getting darker, than lighter, usually for few/dozen seconds. It does it when nobody touches it or when I work on it.
It very annoying and making eyes tired - it does it very quickly and there are few levels of screen brightness.
Moreover sometimes the screen turns off - You can see what is on desktop but the screen is very very dark (but not blank or completely switched off). It happens without any reason - sometimes just in the middle of working, sometime for example when I touch (not pull) the power cable between laptop and power supply.
Then, the only way to get back to normal brightness of screen id to close the lid just for half a second and open it
    - matrix lights then normally, but can "turns off" moment later and I must do it once again - sometimes even few times..
After "action" with lid screens seems like nothing ever happen..
Does anyone have idea what is the cause of such behaviour or how to diagnose it in details?
    Or maybe solve this problem?
    Best regards
    300m

Sounds like the Backlight or Inverter is failing or there is a loose connection.
Is the unit under warranty? Send it to an ASP for repair.
You should avoid repairing it yourself, the backlight is very high voltage!

  • S10-3 Screen Brightness Linux work around

I am running Mint 9 and Ubuntu 10.04 on my S10-3. Very happy with the platform overall, but as many have found their screen brightness keys do not work. My web research indicates that the latest kernels will have a fix, but that probably won't be commonly available until the end of 2010. In the mean time I have implemented the following to get easy control over the brightness. It's not perfect but it gets the job done. Create three launchers on the desktop with one each of the following commands. Select the screen brightness icon and title each launcher as Low, Med , High Low> sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 f4.b=35 Med> sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 f4.b=55 High> sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 f4.b=75 credit to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/538256 http://lgallardo.com/en/2010/08/31/control-del-brillo-de-lenovo-s10-3-video-gma-3150-on-linux/

Maybe this topic is outdated, but probably this info will be useful for S10 linux users: official ubuntu kernel 2.26.35-25+ works good. This means new Ubuntu, Mint 10 and similar forks works good with brightness adjustment with no additional tools or tweaks.
