Incredible Shrinking Hard Drive - Where's it all going?

OK. Here is something i have never experienced or heard about.
This afternoon i was playing NWN2 (btw, terrible game, avoid). And a Finder message appears that my Statup disk was running out space. which was odd, as of this AM, i had 98GB available.
I sat and watched it go to 0k...
I restarted, and trashed a few things in my Trash Can and i went from 0k to 18.07GB, and it stopped reducing available space.
Still odd...
Disk Utility reports 232.0GB capacity, and 214.0GB used and a clean bill of health.
I added up the calculated sizes of the 4 top level folders on the HDD:
User: 92.72GB
Applications: 28.36GB
Library: 12.87GB
System: 4.03GB
total used according to THOSE numbers should be approx 138.0GB, that number corresponds to my morning number of 98GB, i am missing 80GB of space.
What the heck is happening?
I installed MacTuneUp this afternoon, played around with it for 5mins, before realizing it was a waste of money, but really didn't do anything.
where'd my Hard Drive go? i want it back!
there has to be a huge invisible file that something must have created. how do i find it and kill it? I am using an iMac Intel 10.5.2

You can try flushing the system cache, although if you're missing GBs of space, chances are that's not the problem (my system cache usually goes nowhere above 100MB). Here's how to do it if you want to try:
In terminal, type the following lines:
cd ~/Library/Caches
rm -rf *
cd /Library/Caches
rm -rf *
When you try the second rm command, it'll ask you to enter the sudo password, as you're accessing root-level data. It's a safe procedure, though; I do it on my system all the time (if you don't believe me, call Apple Support...they're the ones who told me it was safe). Be careful not to do anything other than that though or you could screw some things up.
Also, while this is safe, on a related note, be particularly wary when anyone tells you to do rm -rf * on any directory that doesn't begin with ~.

    A Espinoza,
The iTunes Media folder is set in Preferences > Advanced, and is the key to most iTunes folder organizational activities.  So I doubt that the automatic deletion will work for files that are somewhere else within the folder structure.
However, I have not experimented with that issue in quite a while, so you are welcome to give it a try in iTunes 11.

There aren't any 3rd party apps or anything. I use PC's and Mac's at school and the only computer connected to a printer at my house is a PC so i need access to both

  • IMac not reading hard drive, spotlight not working, all my files not showing... help!!!

    Hi folks,
I got home from a three week trip and turned on my imac, at first i realized it was running extremely slow. Then i plugged in my external hard drive, and it didn't read. I checked in disk utilities and profiler, and my hard drive was there, just not appearing in finder or desktop. I couldn't mount (it was grey) the hard drive in disk utilities either. (I tried with other hard drives, same problem; they all worked before)
Afterwards, I found out that spotlight wasn't working at all, it wasen't even initializing (see attached screenshot). When i opened "all my files", nothing appeared in the window - it was blank. Another thing is, launchpad scares me - it loads incredibly slow and the screen keeps refreshing itself.
Please help!! I don't want to reinstall the whole system and lose all my file, cause right now, I cannot backup anything since it won't read my hard drives!! Could this be some kind of apple-virus..
Anyone else with a similar situation? My system is 10.7.5, processor: i3

This is not related to any kind of malware.
It sounds like something is going very wrong with your machine, but I'm unsure what that might be that would prevent all external hard drives from working. Are you able to start up in recovery mode (hold down command-R at startup)? If so, from recovery mode, open Disk Utility and select your internal hard drive. What does the SMART Status say?

  • TS2776 Had to get a new hard drive, of course lost all my music in itunes. If I sync my ipod to itunes will I lose my music on my ipod??

Had to get a new hard drive, of course lost all my music in itunes.  If I sync my ipod to itunes now will I lose my music on my ipod?

Sync is only oneway, from PC to your device.  Unless you have the music on your PC, iTunes is going to wipe out what you have on your device if you are syncing to a new library.
You can only transfer Purchased music over to Itunes on your PC.

As for you own music, you may have to use a third party software to copy over.  A good Free one is called Sharepod which you can download from Download.com here:

  • I updated FCPX to 10.9 after I had updated my os to 10.9.1. And the result is that FCPx can no longer read LaCie external hard drive where all the projects and events are stored. The program simply crashes every time I try to read anything from the LaCie.

Could anyone tell me what to do to solve the problem. I updated FCPX to 10.9 and the program keeps on crash every time I try to read files stored in my LaCie hard drive. And the program also keeps on crash every time I try to import files from my SDXC cards.

I have solved the problem. Once the update is done, you need to launch FCPX, and go to File, then "update all events and projects". It will solve the problem and everything works fine.

  • Hi, how do I back up my iPhoto library to Lightroom, so its also on an external hard drive, where is the Back up utility?

Hi, somehow I imported all of my iPhoto library into Lightroom, which is saved to an external hard drive, but now I cannot remember how I did that...and I am looking to update the additional photos i've put into iPhoto to Lightroom...
    Thanks for any advice...Eric

As a mich more powerful app I think you'll find that Lightroom is also quite capable of "uploading, screening, and deleting unwanted photos."
The point about using both is that you have an overly complex workflow -  and that leads to situations like the one you have now, where you can't recall the workflow you used.
Put another way, it's like wrting your novel part on Word and part in TextEdit. Which bit goes where? The best advice is to pick one horse and ride it.
Do don't "import photos to the Finder" you export them from iPhoto to the Finder. File -> Export....
On your Mac you have Time Machine as a back up application. There are also many, many others. Search on

  • I have 2 macs and 2 PC laptops in my home wireless network.  Can I use the Airport/Time Capsule hard drive to back up all 4 machines?  I know that I will have to use different back up software on the PCs, but is it possible over the wireless network?

I have 2 macs and 2 PC (Windows 7) laptops in my home wireless network. (The iMac is hardwired via ethernet to the Airport/Time Capsule; the others are wireless connections using Airport).  I want to use the hard disk drive in the Time Capsule as a network backup drive for all 4 computers.  Is this possible?  Could someone help me by telling me how to configure it?  I know I will have to use different backup software in the 2 Windows 7 Laptops?  Do I need to use the Windows backup software, or can I use a third party program like Acronis True Image?  Thanks in advance for the help

It is your fault, pondini.. all your fault.
I read of all the things that go wrong restoring Time Machine backups.. particularly stupid things like mail, photo libraries don't go back.. etc. And looking through the incredible number of issues people have here, when their Mac finally takes a dive how hard it is to restore.
I restored a test hard disk from a TC.. and it takes ages and ages to even make up its mind to start.
I worked in computer support for ages, but not Macs.. so my experience is ghost.. ghost images.. on large commercial server setups, can stream restore to multiple computers at once.. even doing it computer by computer the image is simple as network boot to restore. But ghost went the way of Symantec.. sigh!! And was destroyed.
A product like clonezilla, Free linux boot cd.
    http://lifehacker.com/5078397/clonezilla-backs-up-and-restores-your-disks
Can backup a Hard disk in just about any format.. yet to try it on a Mac to a TC.. but I will. Boot from CD.. instead of your lost Lion partition which no longer exists (because the hard drive had to be replaced) and the DVD they no longer give you, and restore the entire hard disk in a couple of hours .. to the exact image at the point you made the clone.. in any format, with any partitions.
My bet is that it will kill TM .. but you could be right.
It is just the prospect of all those permission changes, photos and mail libraries etc that worry me.

  • Hard Drive Where?

    Hi
Turned on my mac on Saturday and waited an extended period in the boot up to find a little icon of a question mark flashing on a folder. I assumed that this mean that my hard drive is lost somewhere.
I inserted the restore CD's (not the originals as I bought my machine 2nd hand. My restore CD's are for G5 it turns out but seem to kind of work.) and managed to start the re0install process.
I got as far as 3 stages or so into re-install 10.3 from the restore CD. The problem is that when it looks for a source to install panther onto, my hard drive does not appear as an option. In fact the only place I can try to install is on the CD. Not a solution.
I guess my problem is that my Hard drive is no longer recognised, possibly becuase it has died. Is this recoverable from home? What's the likely outcome? I'm guessing prognosis not good.
I'm hoping the above makes sense.
    Cheers

    Hi Alan:
If the hard drive is greyed out and cannot be selected as a destination for the install, it's because the restore disks you have are not compatible with your iMac; if the hard drive does not appear at all, then the hard drive is at fault. It probably isn't dead, but it is sick: the directories are so messed up that the drive simply doesn't register anymore, in which case reformatting, as Kappy directs, would resolve the problem. You'll lose everything on the drive, but you'll be able to reinstall.
If you have data on the drive you'd like to recover, there are a couple of things to check first:
    1. Boot from your restore CD;
    2. When you get to the first screen (language selection), go to the Utilities menu and launch Disk Utility;
    3. If Disk Utility sees the hard drive, try repairing the disk and then repairing the permissions;
    4. Quit Disk Utility, then go to the Utilities menu and use the Startup Disk utility to reset your hard drive as the startup disk;
If Disk Utility does not see the hard drive, you could try a third-party utility, such as Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro; either one might repair the disk in situations where Disk Utility can't.
    Good luck!

  • Shrinking Hard Drive

I've just moved from PC to Mac and have had my Intel iMac (15 inch, 160 GB)about a month. I have two external USB drives (250 Gig and 120 Gig) for data storage and have been using the Mac for video editing (using iMovie). When I start a new edit, I save the edit project to the 250 Gb external HD and then import footage into that project. When the edit is complete, I archive to the external 120 Gb drive, clear the project off the 250 Gb HD and am not aware of storing anything on the internal HD.
I've noticed that my internal HD has gone from almost 100 Gig of free space to just under 70 Gig of free space in one month. I have nothing in the trash and have not loaded any new programs in this time.
Where has 30 Gb of my internal HD gone? What makes me suspicious is that this would be about the size of the video files I've been importing into iMovie that then showed up on my external 250 Gb HD.
Is it possible that I have video data stored on the internal HD that I do not know about? If so, how do I get rid of it?

    Hello,
I would suspect that you have not fully deleted all of the original project files.
Look in your "Username" --> Movies folder and see if there are any remaining files that you didn't know about. And, check their sizes.
    This folder should be at:
Hard Drive --> Users --> "Your Username" --> Movies
Now, if the space is not being lost there, then you can see where the space has gone by using a utility such as this one:
    http://www.id-design.com/software/whatsize/
It will allow you to see how much space each folder on your computer is using. It starts-out listing the full drive, and shows branches with their respective sizes listed that you can navigate through to see where your space has gone.
It's quite simple, and very helpful in these cases.
    I hope this helps.

  • Airport Extreme with a USB Hard Drive to a store all iTunes music

Can you plug in a USB external Hard Drive to a Airport Extreme to store all iTunes music (or other files) and then access this from all wireless devices?

Yeah the backup is where I'm getting stuck. Seems just keeping the files on my local hard drive is the easiest but that would essentially require a new computer as I'm running a 2008 Macbook Pro and don't want to upgrade it.
