Incremental inferencing questions

I am very confused about how to make incremental inferencing work. Here is what I tried in java code:
Attachment attachment = Attachment.createInstance(new String[]{}, "OWLPRIME",
InferenceMaintenanceMode.UPDATE_WHEN_COMMIT,
QueryOptions.ALLOW_QUERY_INCOMPLETE);
graph = new GraphOracleSem(oracle, "mc_model", attachment);
graph.setInferenceOption("INC=T");
The trouble is, when I try to do something like this:
ModelOracleSem oracle_sem_model = new ModelOracleSem(graph);
OntModel model = ModelFactory.createOntologyModel(OntModelSpec.OWL_MEM, oracle_sem_model);
Individual d = model.createInstance(NS+"New_Individual");
parentIndividual.addProperty(transitiveProp, d);
model.commit();
graph.commit();
The command graph.commit() takes around 5 seconds, the same amount of time it if the entailments are created without incremental inferencing. Is there something I am doing wrong? Can I use the OntModel APIs together with Incremental inferencing or do I have to manually add the statements to the model? BTW, I checked the SEM_APIS change tracking property and it seems enabled and has a timestamp

Hi,
It looks like incremental inference is indeed being used. Note that there is some overhead involved with doing incremental and non-incremental inference in general, so even with small models it might take a few seconds to finish. Some of the overhead is caused by the large number of rules in the OWLPRIME rulebase, so if you don't need all of them you can selectively disable some components using the GraphOracleSem.performInference(String components) procedure.
Also, it depends on your dataset. For instance, if you're adding only one triple, but that triple declares some heavily used property to be transitive, then that addition might trigger many additional inferences and updating the inferred graph will take more time.
Regarding OntModel APIs and incremental inference, depends on the loading method you use. Incremental inference works best with incremental loading. Please refer to Section 2.2.9 of the Semantic Technologies Developer's Guide for more details.
Cheers,
Vladimir

• Post Increment Operator Question

I had written a small program to test the working of Post increment operator.
public static void main(String[] args)
int a = 4;
a = a++;
System.out.println ( a );
I expected the output to be '5', but the output given is '4'.
Can anyone tell me to how this works in Java ?

There is a big difference between a++ and ++a.
a++ means increment a AFTER you have performed the line.
++a mean increment a BEFORE you perform the line.
class Test
public static void main(String[] args)
int a = 4;
a = ++a; //returns a = 5
// a = a++; //returns a = 4
//a++; //returns a = 5
//++a; //returns a = 5
System.out.println ( a );
}

• Incremental Backup question

Hi,
I have a hot backup taken every wednesday and archive log backups taken every day. (using RMAN and netbackup). Oracle is 10.2.0.3 and OS is RHEL4.
Do I still need or (will it be helpful to have ) incremental backups? What is its purpose? Will the recovery be faster if I have incremental backups? Please comment.
Thank you,

i guess this is a good best practice found in Expert Oracle Database by Sam Alapati
"If you expect few changes in data, you are better off using incremental backups, since they
won’t consume a lot of space. Incremental backups, as part of your backup strategy, will reduce the
time required to apply redo during recovery. However, if most of your database blocks change frequently,
your incremental backups will be quite large. In such a case, you are better off making a
complete image copy of the database at regular intervals."

• BRU incremental Backup Questions/Help

Hello Ladies and Gents,
I'm in desperate need of some help. I purchased Bru Le 1.3.0 about 2 weeks ago and going to use it for the clients Backup Strategy for over 2TB of data.
I used retrospect in the past but retro has been giving them major issues and has been unreliable; therefore the reason to switch to Bru.
Configuration: Xserve/XRAID backing up to Two sets of Lacie Drives 2x 1.8TB striped together = one single 3.6TB drive. One 3.6TB is daily and the Second is a weekly Off-site.
Let me preface this with the understanding that I'm not super savvy with Command-line....
The Goal is to Create incremental daily backup!
I started by creating a Full Backup compression level 1, now I'm trying to change that to an Incremental Backup - But when I try to select the base (which I thought would be the Full Backup I created) - I get an Error "Incorrect Base Definition" -- Which means I did this Wrong.
How do I Correctly create a proper Base Definition for an Incremental Backup?
Thanks

Have you run a backup of the datafiles already?
Looking the documentation it says the following:
When using these commands, there must already exist an image copy of every datafile specified in the command. If there are multiple copies of a datafile, the latest one is used. RMAN issues an error if image copies of every datafile in the database or tablespace do not exist.From what you're saying this looks like the case with your backups.
I suggest running a backup of the current datafiles, then running a backup copy and querying RMAN to check the copy exists.

• Scoring on a quiz

On my program it has a simple math quiz that generates random numbers to be added and then you input the answer and if its correct it prints "correct" and if its wrong it prints out the right answer. At the end its supposed to say how many you got right out of 5. I just cant figure out how to count up the ones i got right. Here is my program so far.
import java.util.Scanner;
import java.util.Random;
public class Phase1 {
public static void main(String[] args) {
Random random = new Random();
Scanner scan = new Scanner(System.in);
System.out.println("Welcome to Math Quizzer");
for (int i=1; i<6; i++){
int one = random.nextInt(11);
int two = random.nextInt(11);
System.out.print("What is " + one + " + " + two + "?");
int answer = scan.nextInt();
if(answer == one + two){
System.out.println("Correct!");
i++;
if (answer != one + two){
System.out.println("Sorry but the correct answer is " + (one +two));
System.out.println("You got " + " out of 5 questions");
}

I see that you're incrementing a variable if they get the answer correct, but is it the correct variable to be incrementing? Questions to help you think this through: How many questions are asked if the user gets them all correct? How many if the user gets them all wrong? Is it supposed to behave this way?
Also, when posting your code, please use code tags so that your code will retain its formatting and be readable. To do this, either use the "code" button at the top of the forum Message editor or place the tag [code] at the top of your block of code and the tag [/code] at the bottom, like so:

// your code block goes here.

tricky += tricky++;

tricky is 0. How come the post increment in this case does nothing?

• Incremental Hot backup question

This question originated from a different post of mine, but is somewhat different so I'm starting it up as a separate topic.
Each night we do an incremental hot backup around 4am. Yesterday I dropped a tablespace successfully and removed the original datafile along with it. Autobackup backed up the control file before and after the drop. Then when the incremental backups ran last night at 4am everything went just fine.
So up to this point we're all good.
However, in the flash recovery area where it writes the backups (backupsets, datafiles, etc) it still has a file for that tablespace... except that it did not appear to be updated like all the reset were. This is fine, but that file is taking up space on the box and the unix backup script that copies everything to a separate box still picks it up (that script copies everything.. and the author of the code doesn't want to hard code any names)
Can I just remove this file without causing the backup to be upset? Or do I need to do something else to accomplish this goal? And if so, what (still a newbie so be specific)?
Thanks in advance.

The first thing you need to do is to provide a complementary crystal ball in order to be able to guess nasty little details, like the contents of that script.
Even 'incremental hot backup' is an ambiguous term. One would expect a RMAN backup, but as you didn't use various RMAN commands to establish all of your files have been backed up, and you talk about 'backupsets' and seem to discuss a standalone datafile: The only thing I see is lots of fog, and the need to tear the information out of you.

• Question about using an incremental backup to update a standby

We have a 2TB Oracle 10g database with a standby and the application that uses it is about to be updated. We're using cumulative incremental backups with block change tracking to back it up with weekly level 0 backups. The application upgrade will be making a lot of changes (several hundred GB) and we have stop the standby during the upgrade process as a quick way to get back (we don't have the space for a flashback recovery) in the event that there are issues with the upgrade. We can just let the archivelogs back up and get them over to the standby and applied once they decide they like the upgrade but, it looks like it would be simpler and perhaps quicker to use an incremental backup to update the standby. I probably won't but, If we do that, it looks like we can turn off archivelogs in the primary and not deal with them at all. I've never tried this but, I do have some questions.
Does it make sense to take this approach?
If we were to turn off archivelogs in the primary, would that have any effect on block change tracking? I don't see why it would but, had to ask. Of course, we would turn archivelogs back on and take a level 1 backup after the upgrade.
Thanks in advance for the education.

Funny you should mention that rolling upgrade, I'm actually planning to do that in another environment. My testing says it works pretty well and I'll be able to move a 400GB database to new hardware and upgrade it to 11g with very little downtime. However, in this case, the database is not being upgraded. The application is. It's just that, as part of that upgrade, there are a lot of updates and I'd just as soon not deal with the archivelogs for that. Here's what I was thinking about:
Set logs shipping to defer in the primary.
Stop log apply in the standby.
Turn off archivelogs in the primary.
Do the application update.
If they like the results, turn archivelogs back on in the primary.
Take an rman incremental backup from scn in the primary.
Apply the incremental backup to the standby.
Start log log apply in the standby.
Start log shipping in the primary.
The process for getting and using the incremental is described here:
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14191/rcmdupdb.htm#BGBCEBJG
This isn't your regular incremental backup.
So, am I the only crazy one? Has anyone else tried this?

• Question on Differential Incremental Backup script.

Version:11g
OS : AIX 5.3
I only have theoretical knowledge of RMAN. I am planning to implement Differential Incremental Backup for my database. My strategy is
a. Weekly level 0 backup at Sunday morning 2:00 am
b. Daily Level 1 Differential Incremental Backups at 2:00 am from Monday to Saturday.
c. Backup all archived log filesFirst script to perform level 0 backup -- This script will be run by a cron job every Sunday morning 2:00 am
==================================================================
run {
allocate channel ch1 device type disk;
backup incremental level 0 format '/u07/rman_backup/FULL_%d_%u' database tag "weekly_full";
backup format '/u07/rman_backup/RMAN_CTL%s:%t:%p.bkp' current controlfile;
release channel ch1;
allocate channel ch1 device type disk;
backup (archivelog all  format='/u08/rman_backup/archbkp_dir/ARCH_%d_%T_%u_s%s_p%p' DELETE INPUT TAG "archivelogs");
release channel ch1;
}The below script is to perform level 1 Differential Incremental Backups for the next 6 days. This script will be run daily
at 2:00 am monday to saturday by a cronjob. I'll create 6 scripts like below, the only difference being the TAG "Monday-level1","Tuesday-level1"...etc.
=======================================================
run {
allocate channel ch1 device type disk;
backup incremental level 1 format '/u07/rman_backup/RMAN_DBF_%s:%t:%p.bkp' database tag "Monday-level1";
backup format '/u07/rman_backup/RMAN_CTL<%s:%t:%p>.bkp' current controlfile;
release channel ch1;
allocate channel ch1 device type disk;
backup (archivelog all  format='/u08/rman_backup/archbkp_dir/ARCH_%d_%T_%u_s%s_p%p' delete input tag "archivelogs");
release channel ch1;
}Question 1.
Is my level 1 script correct ?
Question2.
Will the above scripts for level 0 and level 1 automatically delete the
obsolete level 0 and level 1 backup files when a new weekly cycle starts?
Any more enhancements(or corrections) you gurus want to suggest?

Above scripts seems to be correct.
Why you don't test it on test environment?
These codes don't delete obsolete backups of the database. Then just delete backed up archived redo log files due to DELETE INPUT command
If you use retention policy to recovery window of 7 days, to delete obsolete backups you need to run CROSSCHECK command and then DELETE OBSOLETE to delete all obsolete backups
My suggestions
- Practice it on test environment
- Read documentation before performing any tests
- Try to understand each line of these scripts based on documentation

• Incremental updates on collections/full schedule - Functional question

Hi everyone,
At a customer of mine we have the following set-up:
Almost all applications are deployed User Based
Collections are used for targetting the applications
Incremental updates are enabled on practically all collections which deploy applications
For the moment this setup is active for 498 collections (out of 714 collections).
Since it's not advised and Microsoft recommends to only have incremental updates active for 200 collections, I would like to change this setup by means of POSH. I have just finished writing it, but I still have a functional question:
Which schedule time would be best to activate for the collections? Keep the standard value to update collection every 7 days?
When would you activate "incremental updates"? Device collections with required software for faster deployment time?
I only foresee the following "downside":
We have a lot of applications who are available to "all domain users". When the AD-account is created, it will sync with SCCM and will receive their deployements. But by changing the update schedule to, let's say, 7 days.. They wouldn't be able
to see and install these applications if the collections haven't been updated yet?
Thanks for the insight with your experience!
Kr,
Sven

Wow Jörgen, thanks for this information! This was something I haven't read about. Will keep this in mind.
In your blog, you mention that you use this tool to keep track of performance issues. When do you feel that there are too many collections which have incremental updates enabled (by using the tool)?
The last weeks/months, we have a lot of issues during OSD. We have collections to which the TS is deployed.
In orchestrator we have a runbook to add workstations to SCCM + add workstation to collection + update membership of collection. But the update takes from 5 minutes to 40 minutes.. So this is the main issue that we have..
@Andrew: Thanks for your contribution! I believe you are speaking of "Global Conditions"? I haven't used it either, but I thought that this had some downsides.. For instance, we target most of the applications "Used Based" (since MS is
moving to user centric deployment). So if I target the application to the "all users" collection and create a "global condition" to only install when user is a member of a specific AD-group (for instance: Skype), then the user still sees
"skype" in the application catalog and will have an error upon installing it when he is not a member of the skype AD-group.
Maybe this is completely wrong what I'm saying.. Just did some brainstorming with collegues but haven't found the time to play with it in a test environment. @Jörgen: Please enlighten us if I'm wrong.

• Creating a question and answer database with un incremental question table

Hello,
i have a project which am suppose to create a database which will be Question and Answers.
the Question are not to be increasing in the database but only the answers.
exp:
Question Table:
Questions: have you slept well?. Do you have children?. and so on till 12 question.
Answer Table:
Answers : 1.yes, 2.no, 3.may be, 4.some how,
and this Answer should be updated in the database with numbers for instant yes should be 3, no should be 0, may be should be 2 and some how should be 1.

• Incremental extract design question

Hello Gurus,
We have built a custom LKM that extracts data from a Java source(we have to use Java apis to pull from a LDAP source). It all works for the initial full-load data extact and the stage/target for this is the Oracle Database tables.
Now since the Java APIs do not have the ability to find incremental(update, delete, insert since last pull) data from the source , what would be the best way to design my ODI project?
Shoud I have a seperate Stage area from theTarget. Should I use an IKM that compares incremental changes(between Stage and Target) since last execution ? Or is there any other way I can do this optimally(like customizing my LKM itself outside of using the Java apis to have steps that find incremental data, is that possible) ?
Inputs are greatly appreciated
Happy holidays

The LKM read source data and then put these data into the C$table in the staging.
The IKM read the C$table
Choose an IKM incremetal update, all data from the C$table will be loaded into the I$Table,
But only new, updated, or deleted records will be loaded into the target.

• Retention policy for incremental cumulative backup question

Hi,
I have a production database configured with retention policy for 30 days window. No catalog is used.
The backup plan is:
Sunday - Level 0 backup.
Weekdays - Incremental 1 cumulative backup.
I also noticed that some archive logs since Mar 07 2010 has become obsolete in the recent few days.
Cannot figure out why the backup of Mar 07 2010 is going to be obsolete today.
Thanks for your help!

• Arrow key Photoshop default increment question

Is the normal arrow key default increment in Photoshop (not shift+arrow, just arrow) the same length (in pixels or inches) on all standard keyboards? In other words, would the Photoshop arrow key default increment change from keyboard to keyboard?

would the Photoshop arrow key default increment change from keyboard to keyboard?
It' shouldn't. As J Maloney said, however, setting the typamatic rate very high (which some typists/ secretaries do when they do their daily finger gymnastics) might have an influence as may anything that could make the keys stick or lag behind - cooky crumbs, hair, coffee stains.

• How can I assign points to the alternatives in a question?

Hi! I am building my first quiz in Captivate and I have this little problem I haven´t been able to solve. I want a make a test that meassures how stress you are att work. It looks like a survey, I´ll have about 20 or more questions with the same type of alternatives, no right or wrong alternatives, but you choose the one you agree the most with. The thing is that i want to give a value point to each alternative and be able to have a score at the end. See the example.
How often do you feel stressed att work?
1. never : 0 points
2. one a week: 2 points
3. three times a week: 3 points
4. Everyday: 4 points
Att the end, the score you get tells you how stressed you are, but instead of showing a result in term of points, you´ll get a text giving you feedback and recomendations for better health. Can I do that in Captivate? I haven´t been able to find a way to do that yet...
Thanks for any help you can give me!

Hello,
Tried putting something together that could be possible, concentrated on the workflow. There will be some repetitive tasks to be done however, problem is that a click box cannot stay for a whole project, which means that a click box gets its proper ID on each slide. Will try to explain, it is up to you to judge if this is acceptable, or if you'd go better with a Flash app.
Created (for the moment, perhaps you'll need more if p.e. for Q1-Q10 you need a separate result for A and for B, result for Q11-Q20...) two user variables:
v_AClick to store the number of clicks on A-option
v_BClick to store the number of clicks on B-option
The results can then be used later on for a condition (did not write it yet).
Created a first slide with these objects:
dummy Text Caption 'Option A' (will be replaced later on with question text)
click box covering up this Text Caption, named it (ID) ClickA1 (this is the tedious part, has to be done for each CB; ClickA2, ClickA3...)
dummy Text Caption 'Option B' (will be replaced later on with question text)
click box covering up this Text Caption, named it (ID) ClickB1 (this is the tedious part, has to be done for each CB; ClickB2, ClickB3...)
imported a 'sign' to be showed after the user clicked into the Library, and put an instance to the right of each Text Caption, those were labeled VinkA and VinkB. Very important: set those instances to 'Show for the entire project', which avoids to have them duplicated to each slide, we will hide and show them as necessary.
button 'Next' which on Succes jumps to next slide.
The blue Text Caption was for me, to check if the actions were functioning, shouldn't be there in the end file.
I created a first Advanced action, labeled it HideVink (sorry for the Dutch, Vink = the green symbol), to be triggered on entering the slide:
Hide VinkA
Hide VinkB
Second/third action, labeled A_Action1/B_Action1 to be triggered by clicking on the ClickA1/ClickB2 with these actions:
increment v_AClick/v_BClick with 1
hide the other clickbox, thus ClickB1/ClickA1 to avoid that the user could click on both options
show AVink/BVink
Here is an example, action A_Action1
Those two actions have to be duplicated for each Question slide (A_Action2, B_Action2,....). What has to be changed in the duplicates is only the number of the Click Box, that is why I labeled them to make the process easier.
Now I duplicated the slide as many times as necessary. The actions for button and entering slide are OK, but the actions for the click boxes have to be adapted (tedious).
Why did I use 'dummy' Text Captions: I should export (File menu) the Text Captions to a Word-document, change the dummy texts (left column) to the real captions (much easier in one doc) and re-import them into the CP-file.
That was my homework, as promised. Hope it helps, even if you choose to go the Flash-way after all.
