InDesign Text Field Options

Hi,
I want to create a variety of text fields in InDesign for an interactive PDF with options such as font, font size, date, numbers only, alignment, etc, options that are all available in Acrobat.
The idea is to create all the text fields in InDesign without the help of Acrobat as we have a lot of forms and we always have a lot of changes in the forms.
Currently, when we have changes in the forms, we have to do them in InDesign, export, and then do all the form fields in Acrobat again, which is a terrible worklflow.
Is there any possibility to do these text field options in InDesign?
Thanks for any help!
Regards,
Kim

@Steve – I found no time for testing this, but maybe a script by Marijan Tompa (TOMAXXI) could be of great help.

  • PDF form text fields' options change when opened in READER on a MAC.

    I created a PDF form using Adobe X PRO. All fields are UNCHECKED for Property/Options/ "scroll long text". I save and distribute the form as a "reader extended pdf/enable additional features" so it can be saved and returned using READER.
    When a Mac user opens the extended form in Adobe READER, ALL the text fields change to scroll. When he returns the completed form to me, every text field, even signature and date fields, are changed to scroll text.
    What is happening in the transition from PC to MAC?

    Preview is the default PDF viewer on the Mac. It should never be used with PDF forms. Just let them know that they should use Adobe Reader. Provide a link or URL where it can be downloaded and let them know that it's free.
    There are things you can do so that it doesn't work in Preview, but it involves some scripting. If interested in this approach, post again.

  • InDesign Text frame options - how to reset?

    Working in InDesign CC 2014.
    I have somehow set my text frame options so that when I use the type tool to create a text frame, columns are added as I make the box wider.
    I know that I want Columns - Fixed number of 1, because I  have found the settings I want by opening a new doc and creating a basic text frame and looking at the settings.
    In my working doc, when I change the text frame option settings, they will not "stick" and I can only create text frames with columns, and the width increases incrementally.
    Only way I can make the basic text frames I want is to copy a basic empty frame from a new doc and paste into my working doc.
    How can I get the settings I make to "stick"?
    Thanks!

    Open the Basic Text Frame Object Style, and fix your column settings there. Your new text boxes are based on those settings.

  • InDesign CC: Text in editable text fields disappearing after exporting

    Hi,
    I'm having an issue of text disappearing from editable text fields after exporting the document as an interactive pdf. I've created the text that needs to be editable in acrobat with InDesign CC. So for example, I want to have an editable text field that already says "I'm Mary." I want users to have an ability to change "Mary" to "Tom" or "Ben" in Acrobat. So the pdf should have an editable text form saying "I'm Mary" sentence when users open the pdf in Acrobat. However, after exporting, the text fields remains but the text itself "I'm Mary." is gone. I don't understand why this happens because the text is there when previewed in SWF preview window in InDesign.
    The below is the list of steps I took.
    STEP 1: Create some texts (For example, m with the text frame tool in InDesign CC
    STEP 2: Right click the frame, and click on "Interactive > Convert to Text Field"
    OR
    STEP 2: Select the text frame, open "Buttons and Forms" window and change the type as "Text Field"
    STEP 3:  Export the document as an interactive pdf. The setting is default.
    Result: When I open the pdf in Acrobat, the text field is there, but it is blank.
    Please help me to resolve this issue. I know this is possible because a person before me at my job did it.
    Thank you!

    As far as I know, to have a pre-populated text form [I'm Mary] appear in the text field, you will need to set the Default Value of the text field in Acrobat. You can do that by selecting the property of the field > Options > Default Value

  • How to provide text formatting options to user from a text field

    Hi,
    My requirement is - in the interactive form, a comments field needs to be provided where user should be able to enter text with formatting options like
    Headers
    indentations
    bold/italic
    bullet points and numbers
    Once user enters the formatted texts in a text field, data needs to be displayed/printed in the same format. Could you help me on how to provide these formatting options to the user for a particular text field?
    I understand that once I define the text field with format XHTML (with RTF), user formatting can be captured and displayed in the same way. But I am not sure on how to provide the formatting options for the text field.
    Thank you,
    Madhu

    Hi,
    if you select a text field for Rich Text and the press Ctrl + E you'll get a bar for all available text formatting options in Acrobat/Reader.

  • Text Wrap options not showing in InDesign CS3

    Using InDesign CS3 on a Mac 10.4.  I've had this problem for a couple of months now and it's getting past the point of annoying.  When I open my text wrap options pallete it's blank even when I expand options.  I can see the text wrap icons in my header panel, but I no longer have options to change the right/left/top/bottom margins.  Just a general "add wrap" and "remove wrap".  Is there any way I can get my pallete back?  I've tried defaulting my tools, but still it does not show up.  I don't know what to do to get it back.

    Did you try resetting preferences? While pressing Shift+Option+Command+Control, start InDesign. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files. If you don't get the message about deleting preferences, you weren't fast enough.

  • Text field not showing record set options

    I entered the following php code to a text field in a form:
    <p>
          <label for="date">Select Available Date</label>
          <select name="date" class="text" id="date">
            <option value="0" selected="selected">select your preferred travel date</option>
                <?php while ($row_rsDep = mysql_fetch_assoc($rsDep)) {
                      echo '<option>' . date('d.m.Y',strtotime($row_rsDep['Start_Date_Eur'])) . ' - ' . date('d.m.Y',strtotime($row_rsDep['End_Date_Del'])) . '-' . $row_rsDep['Itinerary_Code'] . '</option>';
              ?>
          </select>
        </p>
    In the text field it shows only the option=0 "select your preferred travel date" and does not show the rest of the options as available from the database.
    Any idea what is wrong with my code?
    Thanks,
    zabberwan

    I do have it showing in the sidebar showing as a repeating region. I commented it out and entered your code, but this time it shows nothing at all, not even an error!
    The problem may have to do with "VIEWS" as I am working partly with Views on the external server. The server guys are having problems allowing Views. They did allow it for my account, but somehow this is not working. So I update my database leaving out the 3 tables created as views out of a total of 8. On the contrary on the local server the database is working fine, so that may not be the problem after all.
    I had got it work a fortnight back, but lost it as I had to redo a few things with the forms it is in. On the sidebar it is working fine otherwise as a repeating region and showing all the dates of all itineraries. Only it's not working in the form, where it shows the preselected string (select your preferred travel date), but not the rest of the options.
    About changing the email, one has to change the whole ID  and profile etc. and then you can't log into your own account with the same user name, you have to have a different one, so that your own thread is no longer your own. What a pile of goons at the wheels! And what a disappointment with otherwise such a great bunch of forums.. I'll now have to contact the staff and would like them wipe out all my ID's and Profiles at Adobe and make a new one. It's such a rotten mess. This thing even ruined my ID at Adobe Browser Lab.
    I suppose we'll leave it for Mr. Nobody to fix it, like so many other things especially around Christmas!

  • Set maximum size in Text Form Field Options for a field in bi publisher RTF

    Hi All,
    How to set maximum size in Text Form Field Options for a field in bi publisher RTF.
    I have a RTF whch is having a field in that i need to add some validation condition but after adding certain condition in Add help text tab ,it is not accepting after certain length, how i can increase the length to unlimited,please help me on this
    Thnaks

    Form fields have some restrictions if your are using version lower than 11g.
    They can accommodate only 393 chars. You can add the text in both status bar and help key, which can in total consume 393 chars.
    If your code logic is more than that, it can be split into multiple form fields as Avinash suggested or you can use sub template logic and handle coding over there. Again in sub template code can be within/outside form fields.
    So there is no option for user to increase the size of form field.

  • Need a JavaScript to enable/view Multi-line option for Text fields.

    Hello All,

  • Text field properties-Using the 'required' option in the text field properties.

    Using the required' option in the text field properties.
    The 'help' manual describes the 'required' function as this: Required Forces the user to fill in the selected form field. If the user attempts to submit the form while a required field is blank, an error message appears and the empty required form field is highlighted.
    My users ARE not submitting the form, they open the pdf, fill it out and print it. HOW can I, make a field "required', I don't want them to skip/leave blank specific fields. However, if I choose the box 'required' in the text field properties, and I begin filling out the form, I can just tab past that field that I've choose as 'required', and I do not get
    prompt/error message or anything, it allows me to save, or print.
    I WANT SOME TYPE OF message (similar to enter a company order form
    off the web, where you can't continue without filling out 'required' fields).
    Is there a step/option I am not doing?

    Then you are going to have to write some JavaScirpt to be executed by the "Will Print" document action to check all the requried fields, either by name or by the 'required' property and handle the issue of the imcomplete fields. You will not be able to stop the print, but you could display and error field so the user knows the form is incomplete and the printed form also conatains this information.

  • How to change the text field typestyle in InDesign 6 forms

    I am designing a form in Indesign CS6. I would like to change the typestyle in my text fields. It seems to default to Times Roman. I want to change it to Ariel. Any suggestions on how to do this. I do not want to have to do it in Acrobat.

    You can't do that in InDesign, unfortunately, so you'll have to make changes in Acrobat after exporting to PDF. With scripting you have the opportunity to automate this. Post again if you'd like more info.
    Also, I would strongly advise against using Arial and use the built-in Helvetica instead. Acrobat/Reader actually use a version of Arial when Helvetica is specified. If you specify Arial, it will embed the entire font, resulting in a sigificant and unnecessary increase in file size.

  • I have created an editable PDF via Adobe Indesign. When I open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Pro DC, is there a way to specify a font style? Or is there a way in InDesign to make sure when someone type in that text field it is a certain font?

    I need to make sure the text that is entered is a certain font to keep it continuous with the rest of the document. Thank you!

    To go into form editing mode, select "Prepare Form" in the right hand pane. You'll then get a toolbar along the top that contains the various form-related tools. The first thing to do is add a temporary button. You'll use this to determine the name of the font for use with the script as well as place the script that will change the font properties of the text fields. So create a button anywhere, double-click it to bring up the field properties dialog, and on the Actions tab add a JavaScript action to the Mouse Up event that is:
    // Mouse Up script for temporary button
    app.alert(event.target.textFont);
    On the Appearance tab, select the font that you want to use for the text fields. Once you've done that, close form editing mode and click the button. It will display a popup that will list the font name. This may be different than the name that appeared in the dropdown on the appearance tab, so write it down. For example, when I chose "Minion Pro" from the dropdown, the popup showed "MinionPro-Regular".
    The next step is to replace that Mouse Up script with the following:
    // Mouse Up script for temporary button
    // Change the font and font size for all text field in this document
    for (var i = 0; i < numFields; i++) {
        var f = getField(getNthFieldName(i));
        if (f.type === "text") {
            f.textFont = "MinionPro-Regular";
            f.textSize = 9;
    Replace "MinionPro-Regular" with the font name that you wrote down before and set the font size to whatever you want. Use 0 to specify a font size of "Auto".
    This script will change the font of all text fields to whatever you specify. When you've confirmed that the text fields are set up as you want, you can go ahead and delete or hide the button. If you think you'll be doing a lot of forms work, you can create custom tools in Acrobat to speed up this process, but this should get you started. InDesign won't let you specify a lot of field properties and actions, so you have to work this way, and using automation scripts is an accessible way to significantly speed up the process and avoid mistakes.

  • Formatting of text fields when exporting from InDesign to Acrobat Pro

    How does one preserve the formatting  of a text field when exporting from InDesign CS6 to Acrobat Pro? It loses both the font and the alignment formatting in the PDF.

    Use a font that allows embedding/ check the font embedding settings in the PDF output settings.

  • InDesign CS6 how to set justification for form text field?

    Hi everyone,
    I've been playing with the ability to create form for PDF file but I haven't figure out how to set a center justification for a text field.  By default it's left.  Same thing for font, the one selected in InDesign while creating the form isn't used when editing the form in Acrobat.
    Do I need to create a paragraph style with a specific name to preserve both attributes?
    Thanks.

    InDesign CS6's forms features are great, but you're looking as version 1.0 of the feature. Those features cannot be set in InDesign.
    Furthermore, if you try to pick a font other than the standard ones at the top of the menu, don't expect that your form users will be able to pick those fonts when they open up the form in Reader or Acrobat. I'm pretty sure that custom fonts are not stored in the PDF form.
