Index type created as "TABLE OF XMLTYPE?"

I have a crazy question.
Is it possible to create a structured or unstructured index on a type in Oracle 11.2.0.3 created as:
CREATE TYPE mytype AS TABLE OF XMLTYPE?

You're right, crazy question
An index, whatever its type, is designed to work on a relational or object instance column, not on a class definition.
I don't know what you had in mind, but to give some sense out of your question you could imagine doing something like this :
- create the type definition
- create a table to hold instance of this type
- create the index on the nested table column
CREATE TYPE mytype AS TABLE OF XMLTYPE;
CREATE TABLE mytable (myobj mytype)
  NESTED TABLE myobj STORE AS mytable$nt
    XMLTYPE COLUMN column_value STORE AS SECUREFILE BINARY XML
CREATE INDEX mytable_uxi ON mytable$nt(column_value)
INDEXTYPE IS xdb.xmlindex ;

    From Oracle's documentation
    The DBMS_XMLGEN package converts the results of a SQL query to a canonical XML formatSince your data is already XML, there is no need to use DBMS_XMLGEN (unless you are doing something more complex not mentioned in your post). Just use a simple
    select * from test_tab;
    to see your data.
    Example:
    Connected to Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.1.0.6.0
    SQL> create table test_tab of xmltype;  -- shortened as don't have your schema
    Table created
    SQL>
    SQL> insert into test_tab values('<Config
      2  xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
      3  xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="/public/config.xsd">

      5  <TcpInterfaceConfig>
      6  <Mode>CONNECT</Mode>
      7  <Port>28496</Port>
      8  </TcpInterfaceConfig>
      9  </ApsConfig>
    10  </Config>');
    1 row inserted
    SQL> select * from test_tab;
    SYS_NC_ROWINFO$
    <Config
    xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
    xsi:noNamespaceS
    SQL> set long 1000  -- Doing for display purposes only
    SQL> select * from test_tab;
    SYS_NC_ROWINFO$

  • Indexing table of XMLType

    I have created an table in XML DB of type XMLType.
    Can anyone tell me how I can index this table?
    Oracle version is 9.2.0.3.0
    Thanks

    Omar
    Thanks for the reply. This issue that I had was the table itself was of type XMLType.
    I have now created the table with a column of XMLType to store the XML document in. This will then allow an index to be created on the XMLType column, thereby indexing the comple XML document.

    What am I doing wrong? Based on the Oracle documentation, I was under the impression that 11.2 XMLIndex would work with Object Relational storage. Is this not the case?

    CREATE INDEX ECI_SCHEMA.REV_ITEM_EARN_DTL_IX7
           ON ECI_SCHEMA.REV_ITEM_EARN_DTL
                      extractValue(inv_dtl_img, '/revenueInvoice/service/transportation/mstrTrkngNbr')
    TABLESPACE ECI_REV_ITEM_EARN_DTL_IX7_ITS
    LOGGING
    PARALLEL(DEGREE 8 INSTANCES 1)
    LOCAL
    /Elements that occur at most once in each document can be indexed using extractValue(). Despite the fact that the index appears to be a functional index, when we create the index we automatically re-write the create index into a normal btree index on the column that contains the value for the element identified by the xpath.
    Eg in the case of a functional index based on extractValue, defined on XMLType using Object relational storage, with an xpath that identifies a node that occurs at most once in each document is not a functional index, it's re-written into a plain old vanilla btree index. You can actually check this by looking in the system tables
    Eg
    SQL> connect system/oracle
    Connected.
    SQL> select table_name, index_name from all_indexes where owner = 'OE' and table_name = 'PURCHASEORDER';
    TABLE_NAME                     INDEX_NAME
    PURCHASEORDER                  LINEITEM_TABLE_MEMBERS
    PURCHASEORDER                  ACTION_TABLE_MEMBERS
    PURCHASEORDER                  SYS_C0011037
    SQL> alter session set current_schema = OE
      2  /
    Session altered.
    SQL> create unique index PO_REF_INDEX on PURCHASEORDER (extractValue(object_value,'/PurchaseOrder/Reference'));
    Index created.
    SQL> set lines 250
    SQL> select index_name, index_type from all_indexes where owner = 'OE' and table_name = 'PURCHASEORDER';
    INDEX_NAME                     INDEX_TYPE
    PO_REF_INDEX                   NORMAL
    LINEITEM_TABLE_MEMBERS         NORMAL
    ACTION_TABLE_MEMBERS           NORMAL
    SYS_C0011037                   NORMAL
    SQL> select * from dba_ind_expressions where table_name = 'PURCHASEORDER' and index_owner = 'OE'
      2  /
    no rows selectedFrom the above we can see that the index created on extractValue has been re-written in a plain old vanilla BTREE index, and there is no definition for it in dba_ind_expressions So assuming you were able to create the index and insert the data you should find that your index is not a functional index.

    >
    We need loads of information to suggest anything useful
    a) What database version is yours? (if 11g, you have good more options)
    b) What type of environment is it? OLTP or Warehouse?
    c) How big is the table?
    d) How many distinct values are there in that column that you want to index?
    e) Would this index undergo lots of inserts/deletes/updates? That is, is this table used mainly for querying or will it undergo continous inserts/updates/deletes?
    In case your environment is warehouse type where you load once and then mainly used for queries and more importantly, if that column has very few distinct columns (typical example is a GENDER column where you have only two distinct values), you will be largely benefitted from BITMAP index. If it's an OLTP environment where multiple processes will be inserting into the table, you never ever go near BITMAP index but do only B-Tree index.
    Finally, have you arrived at a concrete reason on why you want to build that index now rather than when you designed the table? If you don't need an index for sure, better not have it. If you are on 11g, you can have INVISIBLE index.
    Also, if it's a very large table, you may create the index nologging to avoid loads of redo generation (not recommended on production environment though). But you have to be aware that in the event of disaster recovery you will have to recreate the index after you restore the database. Also if you are on Dataguard environment, you have to take necessary precautions while doing NOLOGGING operations.

    Hmmmm ... I don't know if I should smile or frown with the implication that I am an OO guy :D :D
    Most of my colleagues when I started working as a software engineer, treated me as too low-level because of my C background (started doing C in 1985).
    In my last job, my colleagues hated my guts because I was asking them to squeeze every bit of performance out of C++ by using STL which is definitely not OO (although C++ is).
    My current colleagues treat me as a DB guru (which I most definitely am not) and they overlook/forget the fact that most of them use Java libraries in their projects, that I wrote for them !
    I am inclined to believe that I do not fall into any category in the end...
    The only thing I am for sure - and I am proud of it - is inquisitive. I want to know everything there is about the tools I use, and so I end up spending hours and hours investigating... (Microsoft found that out the hard way when I filed 16 bug reports in 8 days when Visual C++ 6 came out ! Not that it hurt them though...)
    This is where my confession ends (and my working on the XML validator starts...)

  • ODI 10g Load table havfing XMLTYPE as one of the data type

    I'm trying load data from source to target(Both Oracle) same table. The table has XMLTYPE as one of the data type. I can load the data, if I exclude that one particular column.
    Is there any way to load the data from that XMLTYPE column as well? Please provide your input.
    Source and traget has the same table structure.
    Version: ODI 10G
    below is the sample table structure.
    CREATE TABLE APPLICATION
    APPLID VARCHAR2(20 BYTE) NOT NULL,
    JOBTYPE VARCHAR2(20 BYTE),
    USRID VARCHAR2(20 BYTE) NOT NULL,
    APPDOC      SYS.XMLTYPE,
    APPLSTATUS VARCHAR2(30 BYTE),
    APPLDATE DATE
    Thanks

    Hi Pankaj,
    Remember that 1 character is not equal to 1 byte anymore while numbers/hexadecimals are still.
    So, if you have structures that are a mixture of characters and integers/hexadecimals etc, you can not move data from structure to structure as easily as before.
    In code you mentioned:
    LOOP AT L_TAB INTO L_REC.
    APPEND L_REC TO LIST_TAB.
    ENDLOOP.
    Avoid moving directly from L_REC to LIST_TAB. You can try to define a work area (WA_TAB) for LIST_TAB and use a MOVE-CORRESPONDING from L_REC to the WA_TAB. Then append WA_TAB.
    If the field names from L_REC do not match the field names in LIST_TAB, you can manually move each field value to the correct field in the work area.
    Reward points if this solves your issue

  • Create/drop index on a busy table

    Hello,
    It's kind-a of a funny question but how do you create or drop a index on a very busy table? (by making the users wait...)
    I tried:
    lock table <table> in exclusive mode
    then in another session (session2)
    update <table> set col1 = 'a';
    (this session now waits)
    then back a the first session:
    create index bla on <table> (col1);
    And what happens is that the lock is released immediatelly, and in session2 the update updates and I get the standard "RESOURCE BUSY" error.
    Any ideas on how to do that ?
    Thanks

    After creating a table, how do I type outside of it?   I can't get a cursor to come up.

    Barker,
    If by "outside" you mean "on the right or left of" a table, you must make the Table a Floating Object to do that.
    If you must use Inline Tables, you can do this:
    Add a Floating Text Box with the text that needs to be "outside" the table. Arrange, then Group the Text Box with the Floating Table, and then set the Group to Inline.

  • How can I create index(uniqie index) for a existed table?

    Hi guys,
    I want to create a index for a existed table, it should be unique index. I did it using se11, "indexes," and select the radio button "unqiue index", of course the fields as well. But when I activate it, I get a waring and therefore can not create this index. But if I select radio button "non-uniqe index", it works.
    However I have to reate a unqiue index.
    How can I do it?
    Thanks in advance
    Regards,
    Liying

    HI Wang
    You can create your index via SE11, enter the table name, click change, choose Go To, Indexes. Here create your index with the key fields that you want. To use the index, your select statement WHERE clause, you must have the key fields of the index in the order that they appear in the index. The "optimizer" will choose the index depending on your fields of the WHERE clause.
    One thing to remember is that when you create indexes for tables, the update or insert of these tables may have a slower response then before, I for one have never seen a big problem as of yet.

    Hi everyone, I have a question if is possible to create a table dynamically in Web Dynpro Java?, depending of the RFC consults create the rows dynamically, ,this table must have diferent type of columns, for example link column (when the user click this link execute an action and show a adobe interactive form in another view), image column (show an image depending of the information)
    Thank you everyone
    Atte Israel

    Hello,Israel.
    Yes , it is possible through dynamic programming in wdModify of the View.
    You can do this ,for example, using cell variants.
    IWDTable tab = (IWDTable) view.getElement("TABLE_NAME");
    IWDTableStandardCell cellV= (IWDTableStandardCell) view.createElement(IWDTableStandardCell.class,"TableStandardCell"+i);
    cellV.setVariantKey("NotEditableVariant");
    cellV.setCellDesign((WDTableCellDesign)wdContext.nodeTableDaysTitle().currentTableDaysTitleElement().getAttributeValue("CellDesign"+i));
    IWDTextView textViewi= (IWDTextView) view.createElement(IWDTextView.class,"TextView"+i);  // -- here you control the type of the object that is displayed in the cell
    textViewi.bindText(dayAttrib);
    cellV.setEditor(textViewi);
    tabColumn.addCellVariant(cellV);
    tab.addGroupedColumn(tabColumn,tab.numberOfGroupedColumns());
    Using this code you can control even specific cells in the table and not only columns.
    Hope this helps you,
