Inetd:default

I am studying Solaris 10, specifically controlling the Service Management Facility via a command line. I turn on my machine the next day and it will not boot. I boot into failsafe mode and notice that svc:/network/inetd:default is disabled, not just offline, disabled (among others, but this is what I suspect to be my major issue). I believe this to be the daemon that controls legacy services. I try to enable it with svcadm enable svc:/network/inetd:default and I also tried inetadm e svc:/network/inetd:default but the error tells me this is read only (Unexpected libscf error: backend is read-only. Exiting). Any idea how I can turn this important service back on?

I boot into failsafe mode and notice that svc:/network/inetd:default is disabled, not just offline, disabled (among others, but this is what I suspect to be my major issue).I doubt it. Since you did a failsafe boot, most services are disabled. When you boot to a runlevel other than the default, all services that don't come up in that runlevel are temporarily disabled. inetd should be disabled in failsafe mode.
I believe this to be the daemon that controls legacy services.No. The inetd daemon controls certain network services (like telnet, rsh, rlogin...). Legacy services are started by the milestone services.
milestone/single-user -> rcS.d
milestone/multi-user -> rc2.d
milestone/multi-user-server -> rc3.d
I try to enable it with ‘svcadm enable svc:/network/inetd:default’ and I also tried ‘inetadm –e svc:/network/inetd:default’ but the error tells me this is read only (Unexpected libscf error: backend is read-only. Exiting). Any idea how I can turn this important service back on?What happens when you do either a normal boot, or just a boot to single-user (not a failsafe boot)?

  • How to resource control an individual inetd service

I want to selectively increase the process.max-file-descriptor resource for the following service:
    platypus# svcs -l svc:/network/uconnd/tcp
    fmri svc:/network/uconnd/tcp:default
    name uconnd
    enabled true
    state online
    next_state none
    state_time Thu Oct 19 17:07:03 2006
    restarter svc:/network/inetd:default
This process runs as root and is started via inetd. What is best practice for changing resource limitations on this type of process?

    From the smf-discuss:
    linda kateley wrote:
Is there some way in a manifest or some other way to pin a service to
    a
project or set rctl values in a manifest?See the project and resource_pool values defined in smf_method(5).
You specify that in the service manifest.
You can set this in the repository using svccfg to create the
start/project property for the service. For example if you have a
project called 'web' and you want to put the Apache server into it.
    $ svccfg -s apache2 setprop start/project = astring: "web"

After taking your suggestions, i found that there was no loghost defined in /etc/host. I defined one and now all of my services came up. I still don't have any ssh, it says
Could not load host key: /etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key
Could not load host key: /etc/ssh/ssh_host_dsa_key
Disabling protocol version 2. Could not load hostkey or GSS-API mechanisms
sshd: no hostkeys available -- exiting.
Any suggestions? Thanks for yur help, i will make sure to give you a star.

  • All services stuck in maintenance mode

I've got a problem on Solaris 10. All of the enabled inet services are in maintenance mode. rlogin, ftp, telnet, stlisten, xfs, etc, etc - are all in maintenance mode. The inetadm command shows no online services, only disabled and maintenance. I've tried clearing them with svcadm but they won't clear. It won't show any explanation for why.
What could be wrong to cause this?
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    Randy

Thanks very much for the very helpful suggestions. svcs -xv does not show anything helpful - for the Reason, simply "Restarter gave no explanation". The svc:/network/inetd:default is indeed enabled and healthy.
/var/adm/messages, however, has information that might point to the problem. Regrettably, I don't understand the message and am hoping someone here can enlighten me. For each of the services that is in maintenance mode, these messages appear:
    Nov 3 17:59:44 trsun006 inetd[322]: [ID 702911 daemon.error] Property exec for method inetd_start of instance svc:/network/login:rlogin is invalid
    Nov 3 17:59:44 trsun006 inetd[322]: [ID 702911 daemon.error] Invalid configuration for instance svc:/network/login:rlogin, placing in maintenance
I don't understand what it means by "Property exec for method inetd_start ... is invalid".
    I issued these commands-
    [trsun006 27] sbin > inetadm -l rlogin | grep exec
    exec="/usr/sbin/in.rlogind"
    [trsun006 28] sbin > ls -l /usr/sbin/in.rlogind
    -r-xr-xr-x 1 root bin 36372 Jan 22 2005 /usr/sbin/in.rlogind*
How can I debug this problem?

  • Zfs core dumps in Solaris Zones after patchcluster installation

    Hi
I've installed the recommended patch cluster for Solaris 10 (SPARC) on my T2000 Server.
Now after the reboot all the Solaris Zones (got about 10 of them) instantly do zfs core dumps when their booted.

Installation of patch set complete. PLEASE REBOOT THE SYSTEM.
when i tried to reboot the system by init 6 the service iscsi hanged and produced syslog errors about a unkown iocall -> killed the process. System rebooted w/o errors.
Does anyone have got an idea how to find out which patch or whatever do produce these errors?

    Hi,
I'm having the same issue of diskmon core dumps after upgrading grid and database from 11.2.0.1 to 11.2.0.2 on Solaris 10 x86-64. Following this thread, I'm trying to deinstall the Oracle 11.2.0.1 grid home.
I answered the following questions asked by the grid deinstall tool:
    1. ASM configuration was not detected in this Oracle home. Was ASM configured in this Oracle home (y|n): y
    2. Specify the ASM Diagnostic Destination: /db01/app/oracle/diag/asm/+ASM
    3. Specify the diskgroups that are managed by this ASM instance: DATA FRA
    4. De-configuring ASM will drop all the diskgroups at cleanup time. Do you want deconfig tool to drop the diskgroups:
If I answer no to question 1, the tool exits with error.
How do I answer question #4? (confused about this question of dropping diskgroups, it's already been upgraded)
Deinstall of Oracle db Home 11.2.0.1 was successful.
The +ASM instance has been upgraded and is running fine under 11.2.0.2 except for the excessive diskmon core dumps.
    Thanks,
    Lisa

  • ZFS root problem after iscsi target experiment

    Hello all.
I need help with this situation... I've installed solaris 10u6, patched, created branded full zone. Everything went well until I started to experiment with iSCSI target according to this document: http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/817-5093/fmvcd?l=en&a=view&q=iscsi
After setting up iscsi discovery address of my iscsi target solaris hung up and the only way was to send break from service console. Then I got these messages during boot
    SunOS Release 5.10 Version Generic_138888-01 64-bit

Finaly there is output of zpool list command, where everything about ZFS pools looks OK:

    I would appretiate any help.
    thanks in advance,
    Berrosch

OK, i've tryied to install s10u6 to default rpool and move root user to /rpool directory (which it is nonsense of course, it was just for this testing purposes) and everything went OK.
Another experiment was with rootpool name 'root' and root user in /root, everything went OK as well.
Next try was with rootpool 'root', root user in /root, enabling iscsi initiator:
    # svcs -a |grep iscsi
    disabled 16:31:07 svc:/network/iscsi_initiator:default
    # svcadm enable iscsi_initiator
    # svcs -a |grep iscsi
    online 16:34:11 svc:/network/iscsi_initiator:default
and voila! the problem is here...
Mounting ZFS filesystems: (1/5)cannot mount 'root': mountpoint or dataset is busy
    (5/5)
    svc:/system/filesystem/local:default: WARNING: /usr/sbin/zfs mount -a failed: exit status 1

Feb 9 16:37:35 svc.startd[7]: system/filesystem/local:default failed fatally: transitioned to maintenance (see 'svcs -xv' for details)
Seems to be a bug in iscsi implementation, some quotas of 'root' in source code or something like it...

    How can I enable ftp?

This looks sort of like what happened to me just now. I tried svcs -x
    and got:
    # svcs -x
    svc:/network/rpc/gss:default (Generic Security Service)
State: uninitialized since Mon Apr 18 13:01:12 2005

    See: http://sun.com/msg/SMF-8000-05

I tried all kinds of things to get gss to run, but I finally realized that
it was really ifconfig that was the problem. The system has two
network interfaces, and during installation I gave both of them
a name. However, hme1 was not really connected to anything.
All I did to get it to work was
    # cd /etc
    # mv hostname.hme1 no.hme1
After that, I rebooted, and everything came up OK. I don't know
if the original problem was the same, but this solved my problem.

  • Interactive service at first boot after jumpstart

I have a lot of issues/questions with smf, so this posting is abit long. Sorry for that.
So far we have installed our own software by jumpstarting entire Solaris, copying an rc script to rc2.d , rebooting, then have that rc script to the rest of the installation. This was necessary as some important parts of the installation required daemons that are installed and started at the early stages of that rc script. It cannot be done from the finish script with everything mounted under /a. And, to make things more complex, at the end of the installation I have some interaction prompting certain passwords.
This whole mechanism blew up with the introduction of smf. So I started reading about smf and am trying to convert all this to a service.
So far I have found that I need to setup a transient single instance service, with a :true stop method, my initial rc script in /lib/svc/method/oluinstall as the start method, the service enabled by default and put the manifest in /var/svc/manifest/site/oluinstall.xml. I have a manifest that I believe to be OK. All files in /var/svc and /lib/svc would be copied there by the finish script.
What is not yet clear to me is:
    a) how to get all the output to be displayed on the console instead of (or in addition to) redirecting it all to a smf logfile and
    b) how to become interactive, despite this stronlgy being discouraged?
Are any of these possible? Or is there another solution to my initial installation problem?
I haven't had a chance to test my manifest as I have hit another problem that is mentioned in the Beta 7 Bugs of the Release Notes: autofs does not start (5084183). I have adjusted my finish script to create /a/etc/defaultdomain to make keyserv happy, but autofs does still not come up. svcs reports various services as offline or unitialized and the system does not get to the multi-user-server milestone:
    offline        15:41:34 svc:/network/inetd-upgrade:default

I tried a lot of things but I don't know how to have the autofs service up by default after a fresh jumpstart with no NIS/NIS+ configured and an exsiting /etc/defaultdomain. Can you help here?
I also tried to validate my manifest with svccfg validate and all I got was "couldn't parse document". Not very helpful. I used a toll called "rxp" that I got fro ma colleague to help find me the problems. When I fixed that I now get the following:
    # svccfg validate oluinstall.xml

    template?), got (create_default_instance single_instance dependency dependent exec_method method_context exec_method property_group stability

Well, I guess I need to include my manifest now as well ...

    Tom:
Great questions. I'll try to answer them in order.
What is not yet clear to me is:
    a) how to get all the output to be displayed on the console instead of
(or in addition to) redirecting it all to a smf logfile and
    b) how to become interactive, despite this stronlgy being discouraged?Becoming a console interactive service requires two parts:
    - You need to redirect your input and output to /dev/console. Example
services which do this are kdmconfig (x86 platforms) and the
sysidtools (all platforms)--that is, your fellow interactive services.
Please attempt to keep your error messages going to the logfile by
making the redirection only for specific commands, and not the entire
    start method.
    - More importantly, you also have to insert yourself before any of the
console-occupying login services and after the last of the configuration
services. On workstations, this set of services includes GDM (for
GNOME/JDS) and possibly CDE, depending on build.
(We're going to make this a little easier and then much easier in the
future. But you should only write interactive services if you are the
systems deployer, and not a software vendor.)
You can use svcs -l to list the dependencies on console-login, like so
    $ svcs -l console-login
    fmri         svc:/system/console-login:default
    name         euro-friendly console login
    enabled      true
    state        online
    next_state   none
    restarter    svc:/system/svc/restarter:default
    contract_id  133
    dependency   optional_all/none svc:/platform/i86pc/kdmconfig:default (online)
    dependency   exclude_all/none svc:/application/gdm-login:default (disabled)
    dependency   require_all/none svc:/system/sysidtool:net (online) svc:/system/sysidtool:system (online)
    dependency   require_all/none svc:/system/utmp:default (online)
    dependency   require_all/none svc:/system/identity:node (online)
    dependency   require_all/none svc:/system/filesystem/local (online)
I haven't had a chance to test my manifest as I have hit another
problem that is mentioned in the Beta 7 Bugs of the Release Notes:
autofs does not start (5084183). I have adjusted my finish script to
create /a/etc/defaultdomain to make keyserv happy, but autofs does
still not come up.I would actually disable keyserv, as what's happening is nfs/client is
probably enabled and getting stuck. The best way to report on this is
    to run "svcs -xv".
I also tried to validate my manifest with svccfg validate and all I
got was "couldn't parse document". Not very helpful. I used a toll
called "rxp" that I got fro ma colleague to help find me the problems.
When I fixed that I now get the following:
    # svccfg validate oluinstall.xml
oluinstall.xml:17: element service: validity error : Element service
content does not follow the DTD, expecting (create_default_instance? ,
    single_instance? , restarter? , dependency* , dependent* ,
    method_context? , exec_method* , property_group* , instance* ,
    stability? , template?), got (create_default_instance single_instance
    dependency dependent exec_method method_context exec_method
property_group stability template ) svccfg: Document is not valid. We ship xmllint(1), but I agree that svccfg validate should be more
helpful. Anyways, the point is that your method_context element needs to
precede your exec_method elements. If you want to override a single
method's context, you embed the method_context element.
    /var/svc/manifest/network/ldap/client.xml has a non-trivial example.
Finally, at the end of my install script, I need to remove the service
as I need it to run only once. Before smf the rc script simply removed
itself. How do I do this now?
    svcadm disable svc:/site/oluinstall
svccfg delete svc:/site/oluinstallWe have use a similar approach for singly-run upgrade services, like
network/inetd-upgrade. I discourage deleting the service (and deletion
after disable is a race between the restarter and the repository anyway).
I hope these answers are helpful.

  • Live Upgrade with Zones - still not working ?

    Hi Guys,
I'm trying to do LiveUpdate from Solaris update 3 to update 4 with non-global zone installed. It's driving me crazy now.
I did everything as described in documentation, installed SUNWlucfg and supposedly updated SUNWluu and SUNWlur (supposedly because they are exactly the same as were in update 3) both from packages and with script from update 4 DVD, installed all patches mentioned in 72099, but lucreate process still complains about missing patches and I've checked if they're installed five times. They are. It doesn't even allow to create second BE. Once I detached Zone - everything went smooth, but I had an impression that Live Upgrade with Zones will work in Update 4.
It did create second BE before SUNWlucfg was installed, but failed on update stage with exactly the same message - install patches according to 72099. After installation of SUNWlucfg Live Upgrade process fails instantly, that's a real progress, must admit.
Is it still "mission impossible" to Live Upgrade with non-global zones installed ? Or am I missed something ?
Any ideas or success stories are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    I upgraded from u3 to u5.
The upgrade went fine, the zones boot up but there are problems.

    Hi there
I created two zones, they are identical expect the network address.
The zone1 I have sshd running.
The 2nd zone, zone2 sshd is not running.
    I executed
    1) svcadm -v enable svc:/network/ssh:default
    the result was
    svc:/network/ssh:default enabled.
    2) svcadm -v restart svc:/network/ssh:default
    the result was
    Action restart set for svc:/network/ssh:default.
/usr/lib/sshd was missing when I execute ps -ef
    3) Executing svcs -v, the result was
    offline - 23:38:19 - svc:/network/ssh:default
I also notice /var/adm/messages was missing.
    dmesg only show the following
    Fri Nov 11 23:38:52 PST 2005
    Any ideal ? Please help
    thanks

    Hi
    ssh_host_dsa_key
    ssh_host_dsa_key.pub
    ssh_host_rsa_key
    ssh_host_rsa_key.pub
were not there, and executed /lib/svc/method/sshd -c. Reboot the zone2 but /usr/lib/ssh/sshd still not started
    svc -v
    shows it was off line
It has a number of stuff offline, that would be the cause, syslog is also not running,
    The items offline were:-
    offline - 18:06:05 - svc:/system/utmp:default
    offline - 18:06:05 - svc:/system/console-login:default
    offline - 18:06:05 - svc:/milestone/sysconfig:default
    offline - 18:06:09 - svc:/system/filesystem/autofs:default
    offline - 18:06:09 - svc:/network/nfs/client:default
    offline - 18:06:09 - svc:/network/inetd:default
    offline - 18:06:09 - svc:/system/system-log:default
    offline - 18:06:09 - svc:/milestone/multi-user-server:default
    offline - 18:06:10 - svc:/milestone/multi-user:default
    offline - 18:06:10 - svc:/network/smtp:sendmail
    offline - 18:06:11 - svc:/application/print/ipp-listener:default
    offline - 18:06:18 - svc:/network/ssh:default
    offline - 18:06:21 - svc:/system/sac:default
    offline online 18:06:23 - svc:/system/sysidtool:system
    Any suggestion ?

  • Some services in maintenance state after reboot
