Inheritance in oracle 8i ?

hello dear friends
in oracle 8i (r2 or r3) can be specialize a type through the inheritance?...
(in oracle 8i 1.1.5 not!)
Miguel Romero from Chile
greetings
thank you...

If memory serves, multiple block sizes were not supported until 9i. I believe the answer is no. Once the database standard block size is defined, you can't simply change the block size without recreating the database with new block size of any oracle version so far.

  • Table inheritance in Oracle 8 ? How ? Please help!!

    Hi, for my project I need to use inheritance when creating some
    types, and also when creating tables ..
    I DO know how to get around the types inheritance, but how do
    you work around the lack of inheritance for TABLES in Oracle
    8 ?? Any links to examples, or explanation would be greatly
    appreciated!!
    Regards,
    Danny [email protected]

    Danny,
    Type inheritance is a prerequisite for table inheritance. Once
    you have created a type hierarchy, then you can build an
    instance hierarchy (i.e., view or table) from this type
    hierarchy.
    What are you trying to accomplish with table inheritance in
    Oracle8? Are you adding columns in subtables? Without
    inheritance support in Oracle8, the workarounds documented will
    let you use object views to simulate inheritance.
    Regards,
    Geoff
    when I finally dcyphered that url itturns out to be
    http://otn.oracle.com/docs/products/oracle8i/doc_library/817_doc
    appdev.817/a76976/adobjdes.htm#449267
    anyway ..
    that stuff is on Type iheritance workaround? I need TABLE
    inheritance workarounds .. or is it implied that the same type
    inheritance workaround can be used for the Table inheritance
    workaround?
    cheers

  • Admin_client jar - add "remove-inherited" for oracle.jdbc shared library

    Guys,
    I am using admin_client.jar utility which comes oracle 10.1.3 to deploy our web-application on the oc4j server, everythings is working fine, except for this small issue, where i want to avoid having the shared library "oracle.jdbc" inherited by web-module (which is by default inherited by all apps apparently), since i want to use the oracle-jdbc driver bundled with the war. Now i do that the solution is to introduce a "remove-inherited" tag (for the oracle.jdbc library) under the "inherited-shared-libraries" element in the orion-application.xml file (generated on deployment by oc4j), but what i want to know is how to automate this process of adding this entry, since we dont want to have any manual intervention on deployment.
    Though admin_client.jar so far has provided all the functionality required for deployment but it apprarently doesnt any way where we can specify the shared-libraries not to be inherited by the deployed war..
    Any comments/suggestions ?
    Thanks and Regards,

    Alright that makes sense.
    Yes, spot on. The suggestion I made was contingent on having an EAR file -- even though we accept a WAR file from you, we ultimately produce an EAR file from it during the deployment phase. If you don't want to produce an EAR file then its not viable for you.
    Another possible solution is one that you are sort of suggesting here -- each application can be specified as a child of a parent application -- from which it will inherit various libraries and configuration settings.
    What you could do is to deploy a single, dedicated application on which you configure the shared-library import to the JDBC driver you want -- and then you simply choose that application as the parent, whereupon the child application will pick up the shared-library setting.
    There current, visible parent of all deployed applications is the "default" application. What you could do is to tweak the configuration of the default applicaiton so it uses a different JDBC library to the one it inherits from its actual parent (the system application). The configuration for the default application is contained within the j2ee/home/config/application.xml file -- which if you look at it, is actually an "orion-application.xml" file. So if you make the change there, it will apply to all the applications that are deployed to the container.
    Just found it in the doc:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B32110_01/web.1013/b28952/classload.htm#CIHFFBCA
    Even easier, what you evaluate is a simpler approach where you install and publish the Oracle JDBC driver you wish to use, with the name "oracle.jdbc" and set it with a higher version (which I assume you are doing) than the deafault one -- whereby from how the config in the application.xml is set and where the oracle.jdbc driver is imported, it should pick up the higher version -- so that way you don't even need to change the config file -- simply publish the later versioned library using the name oracle.jdbc and it should be picked up.
    Currently the version in 10.1.3.3 is:
    <shared-library name="oracle.jdbc" parent="api" version="10.1.0_2">
    So if you published the jdbc driver you want to use with the name oracle.jdbc and a higher version, then the import of oracle.jdbc will default to the latest version, which should pick up your library.
    Thus all you need to do is a one-off publishing operation of a new shared-library (oracle.jdbc: 10.1.2.3 for example) and it then should be picked up implicitly by all deployed applications.
    Worth testing my theory though ... ;-)

  • Oracle Text Help with XML column values

    Hello. In addition to being new to Oracle Text, I am inheriting an Oracle Text application and have a couple of questions.
    First, A context-based index has been set-up on a CLOB column which contains an XML formatted document. The Auto Section Group parameter has been set to created zones for each tag of the XML document. I have found that when using a browser to display the content of the CLOB, some of the column values have trouble displaying in the browser, where I receive an XML processing error. I believe this is due to the fact that some of the XML document rows contain URLs that are not embedded in the CDATA tag. In any case, if the browser has trouble displaying the XML, will oracle text have trouble indexing the XML and creating the section group zones?
    Second, I understand that the NOT operator takes a right operand term and left operand term. Can either of the terms be the results of the WITHIN operator, i.e. "dogs not (cats within animals)".
    Thank you.

    I bet you just whipped that out, and I thank you with all my
    heart, its amazing to me how many ways I tried to do what you did.
    Thanks
    I have a second question relating to the same problem and
    that is in referencing the over state. Currently, I can write
    'text' into the text field and see what I have coming in from xml
    in its place during the 'up' state.
    However, when the timeline hits the 'over' state, the
    textfield will display nothing, or 'text' if I have that written
    in. I suspect that I am not referencing the'over' state correctly.
    Should I add one line of code sort of referencing the text
    field and not just the button while in the over state?

  • Urgent: oracle.jbo.domain.Number Bug (continued)

    Dear Shailesh(JDeveloper Team):
    To catch your attention, I posted the topic here again:
    [original topic]
    We are developing a BC4J application for our US customer. Our web server (iAS) and database (Oracle 8i) are installed on RS/6000, AIX 4.3.3
    When we try to set a Number type field value (Number is the only type in Oracle database to stand for a number, either a float field or sequence number). On AIX iAS, if the value is integer, larger than 100 and is not multiple of 100 ( such as 123, 112, 5676, 43435 ), the system(ont our jsp, web bean, but handled by low level classes) will automatically add two zeroes at the end of the number before insert to database table. For example:
    123---->12300
    112---->11200
    5676--->567600
    43435-->4343500.
    It is incorrect! On the other hand, when we try to retrieve value from a field which type is Number, if the value is a integer but larger than 100, and is not multiple of 100 ( such as 123, 112, 5676, 43435 ), the system will automatically add two zeroes at the end of the number after got from database table. For example:
    123---->12300
    112---->11200
    5676--->567600
    43435-->4343500
    We check the xml file of the BC4J, Number field type in the middle-tier is denoted as oracl.jbo.domain.Number, so we wrote a program (JSP) without accessing database, like this one:
    <%
    for (int i=0 ; i<1000; i++) {
    %>
    <p> <%=new oracle.jbo.domain.Number(i).toString() %></p>
    <%}%
    The program runs correctly in JDeveloper developing environment on NT workstation( in the developing environment, NT mimic a local virtual middle-tier):
    0
    1
    99
    100
    101
    598
    599
    600
    999
    But after we deployed the jsp to iAS on RS/6000 and browse it, the output result is very inconceivable:
    0
    1
    99
    100
    10100 (Should be 101)
    59800 (Should be 598)
    59900 (Should be 599)
    600
    99900 (Should be 999)
    We checked all through the deployed Jar files on iAS and the oracl.jbo.domain.Number class, we found that the class is extended from oracle.sql.NUMBER, and the toString method is also inherited from oracle.sql.NUMBER.
    We even test below simple jsp program using oracl.jbo.domain.Number type:
    <%@ page contentType="text/html" autoFlush="true" import="java.lang.*,LocaMotion.*"%>
    <HTML>
    <HEAD>
    <META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1">
    <META NAME="GENERATOR" CONTENT="Oracle JDeveloper">
    <TITLE>
    Hello World
    </TITLE>
    </HEAD>
    <BODY>
    <%
    String strI="123";
    %>
    <p> <%=new oracle.jbo.domain.Number(strI)%></p>
    </BODY>
    </HTML>
    In JDeveloper developing environment, it prints 123 in browser, but when deployed to iAS, it prints 12300.
    Why the same Java class has different behavior under different OS (NT and RS/6000)? We think it is a bug on implementation of oracle.sql.NUMBER. We assume this is caused by the machine CPU register length: NT: 32 bits, RS/6000: 64 bits.
    This bug must be fixed to ensure the BC4J application workable. Would you please resolve this problem for us at your time?
    We are eager to waiting for your answer, as we are in FVT phase, our customer is BITCO enterprises inc. in Virginia.
    Thanks,
    [Answer from Shailesh(JDeveloper Team)]:
    I'd suspect this is an issue in oracle.sql.NUMBER implementation. Could you help us by verifying that oracle.sql.NUMBER.toString() also reproduces the same problem. A potential fix I could think of is to use the jdbc libraries that come with RS/6000-AIX version of the database.

    ,who offer it? IBM or Oracle. Where could I find it and how to use it? Will oracle.sql.NUMBER problem for AIX fixed?
    null

    As a follow up , could you tell the specific database version of Oracle8i you are using.(i.e 8.1.6 or 8.1.7/ also if you have applied any patches)
    . Just wondering if you had tried a simple JDBC program (without BC4J) (eg: a command line program) which uses oracle.sql.Number and produced the same erroneous results.
    appericiate if you could provide any additional information.

    Hi
    we are trying to follow up internally on this. Did you file a bug with Oracle Support on this. ?
    If not I would suggest to do that, but at the same time we would be following up on that with the respecitive product group which works on that.
    thanks and best regards

    Larry's answer:
    Yes. We opened a Tar on http://metalink.oracle.com (Tar number is 1350841.999), but still no solution provided.
    Our software platform is AIX 4.3.3., Oracle 8i is 8.1.6, iAS is 1.0.
    Below program is a very simple Jsp that uses oracle.sql.NUMBER but no BC4J classed used.
    <%@ page contentType="text/html" autoFlush="true" import="java.lang.*,oracle.sql.*"%>
    <HTML>

    In JDeveloper developing environment (WINDOWS NT), it prints 123 in browser, but when deployed to iAS on AIX, it prints 12300.

    thanks for the extra information. We have passed the information to specific product group and they are looking into it.
    As it looks like specific issue we can take this offline.

  • Oracle directory filling up

    Hello,
    I have inherited an oracle server that's hosting a pretty large network management system. The oracle install directory on this server is filling up and causing problems. What can i safely delete on this? I have read that the trace files and the files in the *dump directories are fine to delete. I am sure this information is valid, but could someone point me in the right direction for documentation about the files in these directories or explain what they are used for? Also, could someone please verify that these files are safe to delete?
    Thanks!

    safe to delete as long as you know, you wont be using those trace file for later analysis.
    Make sure all those directories has log and trace files not more than 15 days(that my personal oponion) or move them to a different location. if they are then more than 15 days old, use the following command (or similar in AIX) to get rid of those files.
    find /u02/app/oracle/admin/CHIOPSWN/bdump -mtime +15 -print
    to find the files that are older than 30 days
    find $PWD -mtime +15 -print
    same thing like above,if u r in the same directory
    find /u02/app/oracle/admin/CHIOPSWN/bdump -mtime +15 -exec rm -r {} \;
    to remove the files
    find $PWD -mtime +15 -exec rm -f {} \;
    same thing like above if u r in the same directory
    find / -name "*.inst*" -exec ls -ltr 2>/dev/null {} \;
    find with long listing
    CHANGE LOCATIONS/PWD respectively

  • Problem to swap XML parser

    Hi all,
    I am trying to replace the official oracle XML library by apache xerces on a soa suite 10.1.3.1 developper hosted on a linux red hat platform.
    I have found a how to on oracle web site (http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/java/oc4j/1013/how_to/how-to-swapxmlparser/doc/readme.html). I hadn't found any archive containing the source so I have buid a simple test using EJB 3 (In fact, I have created a "hello word" session bean that return a String containing the Dom builder factory class name).
    I have create the shared library using Entreprise manager as described in the how to.
    My test works fine if I deploy it with the default XML factory but if I add the following lines to the orion-application.xml, the deployment process ends with a null pointer exception :
    <imported-shared-libraries>
    <import-shared-library name="apache.xml" />
    <remove-inherited name="oracle.xml" />
    </imported-shared-libraries>
    I have tried to deploy the test using the entreprise manager web UI (as explain in how to) but the result was the same.
    I have tried to remove the "<remove-inherited name="oracle.xml" />" line but in this case, the XML parser still the oracle one.
    Do you know if the library specification is available in the last soa suite ?
    Thank in advance for your responses.

    Andre,
    Thanks for your interest on my problem.
    In fact, I have created a test with just an interface and a class. No additional jars are added at compilation or ejb creation time.
    My java code is very simple (I have just copied the example main method and convert it to a SOAP method :
    package be.test;
    import javax.ejb.Stateless;
    import javax.jws.WebService;
    import javax.xml.parsers.DocumentBuilder;
    import javax.xml.parsers.DocumentBuilderFactory;
    @Stateless
    @WebService(endpointInterface = "be.test.Test")
    public class TestImpl implements Test {
         public String test() {
              DocumentBuilder builder=null;
              DocumentBuilderFactory factory = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance();
              try
              builder = factory.newDocumentBuilder();
              return "<BR><B>DocumentBuilderFactory Instance:</B> " + factory.getClass().getName() +
              "<BR><B>DocumentBuilder Instance:</B> " + builder.getClass().getName() +"<BR>"; }
              catch (Exception e)
              return "Error processing DOM -- " + e.getMessage();
    Unfortunately, I think that the problem may come from EJB 3 stack that does not support an other XML library.
    Thanks again for your help.
    Best regards,
    Alexandre

  • How to inherit attribute values in object tables?

    I am trying to implement object inheritance with oracle 10g express. What i have done so far is created some types and subtypes. And some tables based on those types and sub types. So far i have understood that the subtypes inherit the attributes and methods from its super types.
    But is there a way to inherit the attribute values from the object table of the super type to the object table of the sub type?
    For example: The object O1 , explicitly labeled with (sIPO1 , wIPO1) , also inherits the intended purpose (sIPT 1 wIPT 1) from T1 . Similarly, the object O3 inherits the intended purposes from T3 , O1 and T1 . Note, however, that O2 , which is not labeled, inherits the intended purpose from T2 , but not from O1 nor T1 , as the intended purposes are not inherited through the reference-of relation.
    _a visual of the above description [http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/1YBAQbCMQMBmd8oyw9SyNw?feat=directlink]_
    How can the types and objects be labeled as mentioned above? And how can these labels be made inheritable by the subtypes and objects based on those subtypes?
    Possible Solution*
    Only way which i could think of is using relational tables, like this: type_label(type_name, label1, label2) and a similar table table_label(table_name, label1, label2) for labeling the object tables. Then refer to these labels through some java programming. Will this be a right approach. I doubt that this will defeat the very intentions of the object database. And i hope there is a straight solution in Object Relational methods instead of java programming.
    nested tables and vararrays... will using them help solving the above problem some how?

    From those examples i can see that although the nested tables will have the super type attributes and values with them, if i have to change those attribute values the values in the whole table gets changed.
    is it possible to change the super type attribute values which is corresponding to the nested table values alone and not disturb the over all table?

  • Setting up rman backups - am I missing something?

    I have inherited an oracle 10g database on Windows and I need to set up RMAN backups. I am going through the steps and I think I am still missing something.
    I am trying to put the database in archivelog mode and it gives me this error:
    ORA-01126: database must be mounted in this instance and not open in any instance
    So I try to mount the database (alter database mount;) and it says:
    ORA-01100: database already mounted
    So I figure someone else has it open so I shut it down (shutdown immediate), which works fine, but when I try to restart it (startup mount;) it tells me:
    ORA-24324: service handle not initialized
    ORA-01041: internal error. hostdef extension doesn't exist
    So I try to log into a new session and it tells me:
    ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor
    The only way I can find to restart it is to restart the service OracleServiceDATABASENAME. When it is restarted, it lets me log in, but then I get the same errors as above when I try to mount the database or put it in archivelog mode.
    Please let me know what I am missing.
    Thanks!

    Over Windows, database service has a vital role in the management of the database. Without it being started, you can't do anything with oracle db. Fro your error,
    >
    ORA-24324:
    service handle not initialized
    Cause:     An attempt was made to use an improper service context handle.
    Action:     Verify that the service context handle has all the parameters initialized prior to this call.>
    It may be possible that you have used an inappropriate service name to start teh database. The other error comes up when the datbase is either just started or is unaware about teh name being requested by teh client to get connected, due to wrong name being chosen or an unknown name being chosen.
    All this basically means that you may have either done typos or tried to start some service which was never there. The best way is to set Oracle sid using
    set oracle_sid=<your sid>And then do what ever you want to.

  • Xerces and Xalan in OC4j

    I am using standalone OC4J 10.1.2.0.2 and would want to use Xerces and Xalan in place or Oracle XML parser. I did initialize the container using -Xbootclasspath flag of JRE. but when the application is brought up the transform activty still shows the oracle.xml.jaxp error messages. Our app is built to work with Xerces and Xalan.
    Are there any tricks invovled to make Oc4J recognize these libraries and use them ? Thanks

    I think you can work that within the orion-application.xml file:
    <imported-shared-libraries>
         <remove-inherited name="oracle.xml"/>
         <import-shared-library name="xalan" />
         <import-shared-library name="xerces" />
    </imported-shared-libraries>
    Where you've defined shared-lib entries for the above.
    Reference:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/java/oc4j/1013/how_to/how-to-swapxmlparser/doc/readme.html
    I don't know if this is handled in the same way for the version you are dealing with, however.

  • OracleDbType for function OBJECT return type

    Hi all,
    I inherited an oracle function that has an object as a return type:
    create or replace TYPE OBJECTPATH IS OBJECT (OBJECTID NUMBER);
    create or replace TYPE OBJECTPATH_TAB AS TABLE OF OBJECTPATH;
    create or replace FUNCTION GETOBJECTINPATH ( pobjectid in NUMBER, role1 varchar2, role2 varchar2 ) RETURN OBJECTPATH_TAB
    IS
    v_tmp_tab OBJECTPATH_TAB:=OBJECTPATH_TAB();
    parentid NUMBER;
    rowno INTEGER;
    BEGIN
    rowno:=0;
    parentid:=pobjectid;
    loop
    select objectid into parentid from dual left join (select ro2.objectid from relationshipobject ro1, relationshipobject ro2
    where ro1.role=role1 and ro2.role=role2 and ro1.relationshipid=ro2.relationshipid and ro1.objectid=parentid)
    on 1=1;
    if parentid is null then
    exit;
    end if;
    v_tmp_tab.extend;
    rowno:=rowno1;+
    v_tmp_tab(rowno) := OBJECTPATH(parentid);
    end loop;
    RETURN v_tmp_tab;
    END;
    On my application side, I am trying to run this function and retrieve the return value with ODP.NET as below. However, I am stumped when I need to supply an OracleDbType for the function return type.
    1. What is the OracleDbType I should use for the return type? I read that there used to be support for OracleDbType.Object, but it seems like it is now not supported. I am using ODP.NET 11g. Am I getting the situation correct?
    2. If retrieving an object return type is not as straightforward as setting the parameters (as what I have done below), what is the workaround to achieve it?
    OracleCommand runGetPObjectInPathCmd = new OracleCommand("GETOBJECTINPATH", conn);
    runGetPObjectInPathCmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
    runGetPObjectInPathCmd.Parameters.Add(new OracleParameter("pobjectid", OracleDbType.Decimal)).Value = pobjectId;
    runGetPObjectInPathCmd.Parameters["pobjectid"].Direction = ParameterDirection.Input;
    runGetPObjectInPathCmd.Parameters.Add(new OracleParameter("role1", OracleDbType.Varchar2, 255)).Value = role1;
    runGetPObjectInPathCmd.Parameters["role1"].Direction = ParameterDirection.Input;
    runGetPObjectInPathCmd.Parameters.Add(new OracleParameter("role2", OracleDbType.Varchar2, 255)).Value = role2;
    runGetPObjectInPathCmd.Parameters["role2"].Direction = ParameterDirection.Input;
    runGetPObjectInPathCmd.Parameters.Add("OBJECTPATH_TAB", OracleDbType.Decimal); // this is not correct as the return type is not a NUMBER
    runGetPObjectInPathCmd.Parameters["OBJECTPATH_TAB"].Direction = ParameterDirection.ReturnValue;
    runGetPObjectInPathCmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
    Thanks in advance for any help and would greatly appreciate it.

    Hi Greg,
    Thanks for your reply. I am not exactly sure whether I am using 11.1.0.6.21. The Oracle.DataAccess.dll I see under my \ODP.NET\bin\2.x directory is of Assembly/Product Version 2.111.6.0 - is this version 11.1.0.6.21? I also do not have the samples directory. Am I working on a wrong version? Thanks for your patience as I am really new to this and appreciate your guidance.

  • Newbie: Howto create test env by cloning prod?

    Hello Forum...
    I've posted a similar question to metalink but I don't think there's much activity there, so do excuse me if I bother you guys too.
    I've inherited an Oracle Lite server and application that is used in some of the world's most remote regions. I can't touch the production server, and so I want to recreate the entire environment (mobile server, repository, application schema, etc) in a separate test environment.
    Has anyone done this - created a copy of a running production system for testing? What gotchyas should I be looking out for? I'm particularly nervous about getting the new server to use a copy of an already established repository.
    thanks for any suggestions.
    /j-p.

    Hello Gary...
    Many thanks once again for your advice.
    Before you replied, I had in the meantime asked the DBA to create test schema for 1) the application data and 2) the mobile repository, and to import the data from prod. The installation (not a standalone mobile server, but on an OAS installation) went without any problem however I noticed when I started up the enterprise manager for the OAS that there were two mobile server instances - for prod and test. Access to prod was refused, so that was ok. However the MGP of test didn't run on the test mobile server, but on the prod instance. I figured this might be a show stopper. Incidentally, I was able to pack the application with wtgpack, and deploy it successfully.
    I then decided to follow your instructions (to try to understand a little more the architecture). As the installation to test would always find a repository (despite me renaming the schema to mobileadmintest), I had to delete the test repository schema in the end. I then ran an install to a previously-created empty mobileadmin schema which completed ok but there was no mention of the enterprise application data schema in the installation procedure, so I was quite confused as to how this could work.
