Inplace update from Win 7 to Win8.1

Hello,
is it possible to generate an inplace update from Windows 7 to 8.1 by using mdt 2013?
greeting
Katharina

If you are talking about using Windows 8.1 to "Upgrade" a pc, in order to keep the same Documents, Settings, and Apps, the answer is NO.
If you are talking about using MDT to perform a refresh, and use USMT to keep the same documents and settings, the answer is YES.

  • Updating from Win 10 TP build 9926 to build10049 will destroy linux partitions

hi, i have a grub2 dual boot test system sucessfully running on a 128GB SSD drive with two OS:
Windows 10 Technical Preview x64 en-us build 9926 on one 64GB partition and
Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS Desktop x64 en-us on the last part of 64GB (GRUB Boot Manager Partition, ~48GB EXT4 root partition ,16GB SWAP partition)
everything was running well side by side.
then i tried to update Windows 10 technical preview 9926 to build 10049, by the Windows update (Settings -> Update & Recovery).
during the Installation (after first boot to initiate the Installation 0%..20%) the "updater" was creating an additional ~500MB hidden WinRE partition, unfortunately by overriding the Linux partitions GRUB boot Manager partition and parts
of the Linux ext4 root partition.
PS.: booting is a BIOS based one (not UEFI)
    Questions:
any idea, if it is possible to restore the Linux partitions (the parts that wasn't touched by the WinRE partition)
how to prevent destroying existing Linux partitions when i try to redo the Installation and updating next time.

    Questions:
any idea, if it is possible to restore the Linux partitions (the parts that wasn't touched by the WinRE Partition)
    update to 1.:
only ~20% dataloss, i could rescue ~80% of the data, stored of the broken Linux Partition with use of a data forensic tool.
so not a big deal, it was a test environment, but only annoying, that Windows has broken the Linux partitions without any warning.
PS.: maybe it would be better, if Windows would not steal diskspace from other existing non Windows partitions.
a better practice would be keep all partitions untouched, that is not involved by the win 10 update and shrink only the Win10 partition that is to being updateing by the ammount needed for the WinRE partition and only re-arange the partitiontable
entries (add to primary or extendend table).
so no data loss may occure - maybe the grub boot Manager will be a bit confused, but that can be solved easely.

  • New user called user.domain after updating from win 8.1 to win 10

I can't find any information on it at the moment but my guess would be that the profile versions have increased between 8.1 and 10 as they did between 7 and 8.1
I think I remember seeing somewhere that the profiles in Windows 10 are now v5 instead of the  v4 of 8.1
Found a similar article explaining the changes from the release of 8.1/server 2012R2

    Hi,
i will try to shortly explain the scenario:
I have removed my PC from my company's domain, in order to update my windows 8.1 pro to windows 10 pro. (i read a microsoft article telling that we are supposed not to be joined to a domain so we can do the upgrade).
so after the upgrade was done, i rejoined my pc to the domain. i logged in with my AD user, but a new profile was loaded called: user.domain
and my old profile is still in c:/users/   called user
how can i load my old profile back?

  • Updated to Win 8.1, now can't tag Pictures in folder anymore...

I recently updated from Win 8 to Win 8.1 and now there is no option to tag my photos in [Pictures] folders.  Where'd it go and how do I get it back?  I use this function extensively.  I know that Windows Photo Gallery has this function,
but each tag has to be entered separately, which is slow and tedious.  Tell me it's there somewhere... please.

    Hi,
Now you also could find it easily: (See the screenshot below)
When you open that folder, click View, click Details Pane, then select the picture you want to tag, at the right pane, you will see the
Tags tab like the above screenshot. you Just need click it to edit.

  • Today told not to update to Win 8.1 (new computer)

today Advised by Lenovo 'not' to upgrade to 8.1 because...
Still in Box 520 57317164 -  haven't set it up yet !!!  Called Lenovo Software support division today (1/9/14) - advised by more than one tech there not to do the free 8.1 upgrade at present time -they've been getting 'distress' calls by those who have done the upgrade with various problems as a result thereof & that required drivers are not yet available for win 8.1 therefore trying to run 8.1 on a machine with only Win 8 drivers can cause problems -and that when available,  Microsoft will include the 8.1 drivers for the Win 8. machines as a normal 'update" and/or when it's clear to do the 8.1 update.
I am pretty uneducated when it comes to computers. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks so much

  • Update frome win8 to win 8.1 error oxc1900101 - ox30018

I have purchased at Toshiba laptop including win8.
After release, I installed win 8.1 easily, following common procedure. It worked perfectly and I was quite happy with it.
Due to some hardware issues, I turned the laptop in for repair.
The motherboard was replaced with a new one, and win 8 was reinstalled when I got the laptop back.
Obviously, I wanted to update to 8.1 once again.
This is where all my problems started.
Apparently the update is being installed, but at 95% of the install process done, it stops and reinstall win8 again.
The error codes oxc1900101 - ox30018 are displayed on the screen.
I have now spent months reading on that same problem online, and tried a lot the proposed solution, but with no luck.
I found many many people who had trouble updating, so clearly, there IS a problem with win 8.1
I have called Microsoft support, who said that Toshiba was responsible.
    Toshiba says to contact Microsoft...
Microsoft wants me to pay 99$ for support, so they will fix it.
But it is supposed to be a FREE and very easy update - why would I pay for that?
I have tried to update drivers, clean start, reinstalled win8 a lot of times, uninstalled anti virus and anti malware, went into bios and disabled usb3, used lan cable instead of wi-fi and many more things, but the same error code still appears every time.
I really hope someone can help me - PLEASE PLEASE!
I don't think it is fair, that I have to buy a new license for win8.1

    H Dennis,
When you roll back to the Windows 8, did it work fine? Was it activated? OEM's license is binding with motherboard.
If you change motherboard, it will not be activated.
Please contact Toshiba to activate it. Then try to upgrade.

  • Win 7 PC freeze and block network access for other PC on same switch during windows update from WSUS

    Hello,
It's been a problem for me for a long time now, but the last time (today) I found 3 PC on 2 different switches that block all the network on this 2 switches during the update.
I have a Domain with 80 PC with Win 7 (32&64bit) that takes the updates from the WSUS server that is configured on a Win2k8 r2. The system works well from 2 years from now but sometimes cause this errors that make me look like a dummy in front of angry
employees. If one of the PC get freeze , it will cause lost of connection on all the PC on same switch, and i have to find the blocked PC, remove from network, restart switch and hope that they will came back on.
Does anyone experienced this problem? Any help will be appreciated
    Thank you!
List of updates for today below

    Hi
Thanks for your response, yes I understand that the result is a Broadcast Storm and yes I have the cheapest switch on market :/.
The interest fact is that on one PC, I changed everything and keep only the old HDD and on last updates yesterday it was one of the blocked one too. So this make
me doubt that is something wrong in software on that PC. I don't have any third-part programs except browsers and all have Genuine Win7
The only investigation remained is what happens during the update process?
    Is WSUS involved in something?
And another thing is the fact that some of the PC are cloned, but I have carefully changed the SID
    Thank you for your support

  • I have CS 6 installed on a Win 7 OS machine. I can not connect to the internet to get updates from within the program. How do I fix this?

I have CS 6 installed on a Win 7 OS machine. I can not connect to the internet to get updates from within the program. How do I fix this?

IP routing doesn't work the way many folks might initially think it does; functional IP routing requires manual configuration and the establishment of static routes and default routes specific to the local network configurations, and it's very easy to get it wrong, or to get the default route swapped. Multiple NIC boxes don't magically work, either. (Been there, done that, wondered what happened to my network when the paths got reordered or my route settings were messed up, etc.)
Routing configuration errors can be quite subtle, too. (Again, voice of experience. Ever had a thousand-seat office LAN accidentally routing through your desktop? As the, um, unnamed guilty party discovered, getting into that configuration was subtle. Seeing the performance crater on the fellow's box and on the LAN was obvious.)
Knowing how IP routing works is a prerequisite to getting this configuration to work; there's manual configuration required. Clearly something has gone weird here.
What to do? Read up on IP routing. I'll again suggest the threads and the manual mentioned earlier.
And in general, I prefer to avoid using my comparatively expensive Mac boxes as sub-optimal IP routers or as firewall boxes. General-purpose operating systems and generic x86 boxes are going to be inherently poor IP routers. Dedicated routers (or embedded or surplus x86 boxes with routing software loaded) offload the Mac boxes here, and are also typically easier to configure manage. And "real" IP routers can have hardware specific to efficiently routing packets. Use of an outboard firewall or firewall-router box also greatly simplifies gateway routing, too; it's a configuration that many folks and many businesses tend to use.

  • Three unwanted programs joined the 30.0 update from a reminder button on taskbar, and do not appear in downloads.

Today, 6/18/2014, on my laptop, running Win8.0, a Firefox icon appeared on the taskbar, saying a new version 30.0 was available. I clicked on it, but missed as it closed. Upon opening the hidden icons, I clicked on the Firefox icon, the words 'update Firefox 30.0' appeared as I clicked on the icon. Then all hell broke loose. Adblock plus didn't stop anything, so the items were believed to be from Mozilla. A box appeared on top, saying "Update Windows 8 Drivers", and was flashing. The download box for Firefox may have been opened, and before allowing an install, several programs and add-ons were offered, but I tried to decline them. I clicked on the driver update, and Advanced System Protection from 'powerbundle.systweak.com, Driver support from secure.driversupport.com and System Speedup from www.systemspeedup.com were all downloaded without asking. They did not appear in the 'Downloads' history. Also, a Microsoft box appeared asking to download to Win Explorer, (like am I nuts?), I use Mozilla on purpose. Closed that box. Next, the Adv. Sys. Protector was analyzing my computer, with a Microsoft logo on the screen. It said I had 167 registry problems. After viewing, I decided to close all open windows. Then, in Programs, I found the three new programs and uninstalled them. When I opened Help About, in Firefox, the new version was just starting to install.
These boxes appeared so fast, and weren't touched by Adblock, at first I thought you might have bundled some features, and add-ons. You should find out who is gaming your installation process and shut them down. Microsoft has been trying to get me to update to win8.1, but I have declined, so I thought the box I was seeing was a recommendation from you to install win8.1 for protective purposes, though that is exactly why I have chosen not to do the upgrade. This question is being sent from the desktop computer that is now since I just checked, starting to update to 30.0. The programs, and Firefox do not appear in the downloads box, so maybe they were entering via Explorer? You don't stick anything else on your updates, so I wasn't expecting this.

Go to Mozilla.org and download the '''full''' installer and save it.
Completely remove Firefox. Run as may of the mal-ware program below
as you can. Install Firefox from the installer you downloaded. After,
check ALL of your add-ons and the programs on your computer. Make
sure you know what they are for. Use a web search if you need to.

  • Lenovo t410 BIOS update for win 8.1

    hi
I want to upgrade my BIOS, but there is no update available for bios in windows 8.1.. My Bios version is 1.18, I want to update because i read somewhere that if your fan make noise make sure you have updated BIOS :A.. I want  to know if I can install "BIOS update for win 8" in my lenovo t410 with windows 8.1..
    thanks everyone for helping..
sorry any mistake in english, I am from Kosova <3
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello.
The Windows BIOS upgrade isn't OS specific, it runs on all OS's between XP-Win8.1, even if it doesn't list 8.1 specifically.
You can either update it manually, using the update here:
BIOS Update Utility for ThinkPad T410, T410i
Or make a bootable CD/USB with the ISO file here:
BIOS Update Bootable CD for ThinkPad T410, T410i
Either way works like a charm on a Windows 8.1 machine, but be aware of the risks involved in updating your BIOS.
    Good luck!

  • Windows Update Loop - Win 7 Pro - x64 :: Error 80071A91

Hi, I've been referred to this forum by the Microsoft community from this post: answers.microsoft.com  /en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-system/windows-update-loop-win-7-pro-x64-error-80071a91/b17c5bc5-7977-4f8b-9b45-ecb265886381 (same as below)

    Hi,
"There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again"
I've got the error (80071A91) that others have experiences while trying windows update and for the life of me I cannot get the updates to install.
Looking for the past 4 hours via Google, trying different recommended things and still no luck
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-windows_update/unable-to-install-updates-getting-error-code/27a21977-f964-4376-bfab-2f29ea127c6a
    # SFC /scannow causes the "repair status message" and asks for reboot.
I've downloaded fix-it, tried booting into a system repair/restore disk using command line to run
    #sfc /scannow /offline....
using the dispart to LIST VOLUMES  (based on this http://mikemstech.blogspot.com.au/2011/12/how-to-perform-offline-system-integrity.html )
I've tried #fsutils resourse set autorevert=true (or something, can't find the exact post as I've rebooted so many times)
I've tried dismc.exe (or similar without success)
Basically I'm stuck with these updates (~10 of them) always sitting there downloading, installing every time I shut down the PC.
Running a system repair disk created in windows still does not allow #sfc /scannow....
My Last system restore was 04/08/14 and I cannot even restore the system to this point as the restore fails and asks to remove itself once I restart the system.
    Details:
OEM version of windows purchased legally and genuine microsoft logo in system dashboard.
    Intel Core I5 -3330
    16GB RAM

**NOTE** I have the C drive hooked up in RAID 0. Two(2) * 60GB SSD disks in RAID 0 used as C: via BIOS RAID
    Secondary storage disk a D:
Been working and updating fine for the past 5-6 months.
I have the Optical drive setup as O: and a Daemon tools virtual drive as drive E:
While running DISKPART and using LIST VOLUME I see this:
currently the system seems to have lost all update history
Any information or help on this is appreciated. I don't want to reformat and reinstall, I don't really want to 'repair' and wipe my current software installation so I'm hoping there is a way.
Anyway I can get the 'pending state' removed.?
    Thanks in advance
    David

Hi, I've rebooted into Repair mode (Console), (because repair said windows is installed on E:) run dism.exe /image:E:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions
This gave a message about small scratch space but did say something out a fix. Upon reboot into safemode with console I received the same message
    "C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow
Beginning system scan.  This process will take some time.
There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete.  Restart Windows and run sfc again."
I then rebooted and tried SCF again, no luck... Same message, same updates still sitting there.

  • Server 2012 R2 cannot update from 2008 R2 WSUS server

Our WSUS server is on a 2008 R2 VM.  Updates for all 2008 R2 and lower servers, and Windows 7 clients work fine.  I have one Server 2012 R2 in production and it cannot check for updates.  It gets 800b0001 as the error code.  I can
click on check for updates from Microsoft, then it does reach out to the Internet, download and install updates.
I also tried from my Win 8.1 laptop and I get error 8024402C.  Any idea's?

I found in another thread the fix.
In regedit go to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Update Services\Server\Setup and change "wYukonInstalled"
    from a 1 to a 0.
    Installer succeeds.
However now the Update Services console does not work.  I get a connection error.
It's one thing after another with these things.  I don't understand why Microsoft can't ever make something simple.  IISReset did not cure this either.
The WSUS administration console was unable to connect to the WSUS Server via the remote API.
Verify that the Update Services service, IIS and SQL are running on the server. If the problem persists, try restarting IIS, SQL, and the Update Services Service.
The WSUS administration console has encountered an unexpected error. This may be a transient error; try restarting the administration console. If this error persists,
