Inserted CD's vanish

hi,
i was wondering if anyone else has this issue. On my new IMAC, often when I insert a cd, it doiesn't showup on the desktop or in iTunes. I think it may have something to do with my using the computer for other things while the imac is reading the newly-inserted CD. In other words, if I so much as touch the keyboard while the newly-inserted CD is becoming acclimated to the iMac, the iMac will not show the cd as having been inserted. Any ideas?
Thanks!
p.s. I hope no one else has posted this Q before. I tried running a search before posting, but inexplicably the Mac Discussions search button has vanished as well.

thank you for your response. no, they are not appearing in the sidebar. one weird aspect is that, when this happens, sometimes you can see iTunes displaying new info for the newly inserted CD, and then it disappears in an instant.

  • Oracle Can't Update

I'm using JSP with an Oracle database now.
When I insert statements using SQLPlus, the data stores successfully. No problems.
But when I shut down SQLPlus, and turn it on again, the data I inserted into the database is gone! The tables still exist, but the inserted data has vanished. When I insert the data again, a simple select statement shows it was inserted successfully. Off and on SQLPlus again and the data is vanished with the empty tables remaining.
Anyone know the problem? Please help if you can.
    Yours,
    Ler Ping

    You can either do
    execute("set autocommit on");
which will turn on autocommit in Oracle or you can issue a commit command after every transaction:
    execute("commit");
You probably want to use the "commit" approach because it allows you to roll back transactions.
You cannot set autocommit through SQL Plus because it is good only for that session -- the SQL Plus one. (OK, you could go in as the Oracle DBA and make a global change to auto commit, but that would probably break a lot other applications.)

  • Bold in Character Tag doesn't work in cross-referenced text

    Hi there,
I'm using cross references to insert sections of text that are repeated in two chapters. The referenced text includes bold text that is defined in a Character Tag. The chapter where I'm inserting a reference to the text has the exact same Character Tag in its Character Catalog (I imported the character formats to be sure). But the bolding goes away in the cross-referenced text. Any ideas on how to make the bolding show up?
    Thanks,
    Tami

    > The Xref appears to have honored only the Superscript and the Small Caps ...
I did another test, and the following are honored in Cross-References:
    Family
    Small Caps, Lowercase, Uppercase
    Spread
    Stretch
    Superscript, Subscript
This works between files, in which case the local file can have different definition for the Character Format named.
It wasn't clear if these were honored: Pair Kern, Language
No other Character Format options were honored.
No source Paragraph Designer attributes were honored.
No local overrides were honored (well, actually, I saw a font come in on insertion, but it vanished on Update).
The above was using a simple <$paratext> Xref format. If your Xref format includes a Character Format that conflicts with the Character Format at the source, the source prevails.
If the Xref format was, say, <Symbol><$paratext>, the format's Symbol font changed all the incoming text that used a default font, but did NOT override a Character Format:Family [Albertus] at the source. Interesting.

  • Insertion Point vanishes

Sometimes the Insertion Point in the NOTES app vanishes and I have to quit Notes to gte it back. Anyone else having this problem? Its a bug..

I've had the problem for some time in some applications; I've submitted a bug report and Apple is aware of it; in my case, it's actually gotten a bit better. You might want to use this to submit feedback:

  • I have upgraded thunderbird to v28 but now when I 'insert a link' I find that the cursor vanishes off of the screen.

Since the upgrade to Thunderbird v28 I have found that if I insert a link to a web page then the cursor vanishes and I am unable to tell where I am.

    Hi MGB65,
Thunderbird is only on version 24, unless you are asking about Firefox the Browser :-)?
If you copy a link and right click "Paste" in the url bar then the webpage will load. If you need some help please check out [[Use the Awesome Screen to search the web, bookmarks and more]] to find out more about the awesome bar.
    Cheers,

  • Siri has vanished from iPod touch, I am asked to insert a pass code in restrictions, I have never set one so don't know it.

Siri has vanished from iPod touch 5 generation after update. If I go to Restrictions I need a pass code which I have never set. What do I do?

    Forgotten RESTRICTIONS Passcode
    - Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and restore via iTunes. For how to restore: iTunes: Restoring iOS software
    You have to either:
    - Restore from a backup that was make before you added the Restrictions passcode. If you restore from a backup made with the Restrictions passcode the Restrictions passcode is also restored.
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod

  • My files vanished. Adobe does nothing...

I've marked this as a question in hopes that someone had this problem and found a resolution. I've waited nearly if not 3 months before going this route, but I'm absolutely disgusted with the support and so called escalation of my issue.
This is my last desperate attempt to get someone's attention... Sad. Never thought I'd be griping in public forums to get a response.
In short, my files vanished: I stored approximately $5000 worth of files in Created Cloud. These consisted of graphics I've purchased, licenses to accompany them, videos, after effect templates, and several client related files of work our company has performed. I've spent countless hours dealing with the adobe technical support, from basic to escalated to absolutely no resolve. I've had to repeat myself a ridiculous amount of times. Each support agent passes the buck to someone else, now eventually leading me to escalation.
Now for all of those to read, I'm going to entertain you with as much of these discussions as I can dig out.
A little background. A year or so ago I had adobe change my adobe ID to [email protected]. Previously it was under a gmail account. I was moving along with my work and noticed that the stupid annoying login window popped up when trying to open Dreamweaver. It stated that it couldn't find an account under my adobe ID. Support tells me there never was one under that ID. I use 1Password and have had this login and password saved for a long time. I use Adobe products daily. I'm not losing my mind.
Jumping into my support cases on adobe.com, I see that the chat history is not saved. I saved some of the later ones, so for now I'll share what happened.
Basically I finally gave up arguing with the agent. My ID mysteriously reverted back to the original gmail. I didn't change it back. They said it was never under a .me account. Arguing served no purpose at that point. It just continued to insult my intelligence. I signed into the gmail account and was able to open the software.
It was later/or before. I'm getting so confused now...  I realized that all of my files in Creative Cloud were gone. Every ... single... one of them. Not the folders though. The folders, and all the child folders ( I had it very well organized ), like Photos, People, Places, Solid Objects, and so on. Web icons, graphics, videos, etc. All the folders there, but no files.
I started saving these transcripts. Here's one on:

info: You are now chatting with 'Gian'
Gian: Hello. Welcome to Adobe Technical Support.
    Patrick: Hi Gian.
    Gian: Hello Patrick.
Patrick: All my folders exist in CC, but all the files are gone, vanished. . a ton of money worth too. Illustrations I've purchased, and much more.
Patrick: I'm not sure how long they've been gone.
Gian: Could you be a bit more specific as to what happened?
Patrick: Okay. I dont' know what happened.
Patrick: I have a ton of organized folders
    Patrick: Example:
Patrick: Photos / People, Places, Buildings, etc. all folders which were packed full of my stuff
Patrick: All the folders are there, but not a single file.
Patrick: I certainly didn't delete them.
Gian: May I know if you are able to login to your computer?
Patrick: I'm on my computer now.
Gian: Okay. May I know if only Adobe products are missing or everything is gone and your computer is empty?
    Patrick: Adobe
    Patrick: My creative cloud folder
Patrick: My creative cloud folder is there... and all the sub folders, but no files.
    Gian: Okay.
Gian: Just to confirm, the files that you stored in Creative cloud are missing?
    Patrick: Yes...
Patrick: all of them. Every one of them. The only thing that remains is the folders and child folders
    Gian: Okay.
Gian: Patrick, please launch your CC Desktop application.
    Patrick: It's open
Gian: Okay. Please look in Applications folder if you could find a folder called Creative Cloud Desktop?
    Patrick: I'm on MAC.
Patrick: It's called > Adobe Creative Cloud
Patrick: Applications/Adobe Creative Cloud/Adobe Creative Cloud
    Gian: Yes.
    Patrick: Yes it's there.
Gian: May I know if you added any files to that folder or deleted any files from that folder?
Patrick: none. First time I even looked at it
    Gian: Okay.
Gian: I am sorry for the miscommunication. please click on Finder and Go>Applications.
    Patrick: ok
Patrick: yes the application is in there but it isn't called "Creative Cloud Desktop"
Gian: On the left side, could you locate a folder called Creative cloud files.
    Patrick: yes
Patrick: In which I have lots of folders....
Patrick: but all the files in those folders are gone
Gian: May I know if you accidentally added/deleted any files/folders from there?
    Patrick: Okay, please understand.
Patrick: I have a TON of folders, and sub folders
Patrick: I didn't go into each one and delete all the files in each folder.
Gian: Patrick. Please log on to www.creative.adobe.com.
    Patrick: ok, there
Patrick: It's identical to what's on my computer. Just folders and child folders. NO files
    Gian: Please sign-in it.
Gian: Click on files which comes before Download center.
    Patrick: ok
Gian: You will find a folder, when you keep your mouse to it, it will say as view  archived files.
    Gian: Please click it.
Patrick: I saw two folders in there, and resotred them both
Patrick: but no files are in them either
Gian: Patrick, I am sorry to inform you that I need to escalate this case to our senior expert team.
Gian: They will contact you for resolving your issue.
    Patrick: Ok please do so.
Patrick: I need my files ASAP. I have to have them... Thousands of dollars of money spent on those graphics.
Gian: May I have your contact number and appropriate time to call you?
Patrick:###-###-#### 9am - 9pm Central time any day of the week.
Patrick: When will I hear from someone?
Patrick: This is affecting my work, bigtime.
Gian: I am sorry for the inconvenience caused to you.
Gian: I will escalate the case. They will contact you soon.
    Patrick: Ok thanks.

info: You are now chatting with 'Sumukan'
Sumukan: Hello! Welcome to Adobe Customer Service.
    Patrick: Hi.
    Sumukan: Hi Patrick!
Patrick: Just a heads up, I'm highly irritated at Adobe
Sumukan: I'll check and assist you with your tickets.
    Patrick: Nothing personal.
Patrick: I've waited a week for a response from Adobe
    Patrick: I think it's been a week
Patrick: All my files in CreativeCloud vanished, and I've been through this chat deal over it twice prior to now
Patrick: No one is fixing anything.
Patrick: Thousands of dollars of money spent on my graphics, videos and more.
Sumukan: I am sorry for the delay happened in your situation.
Patrick: All my folders are there but no one is getting back to me... No one is restoring my files. I didn't delete my files.
Patrick: I'm running a business. I can't work without them.
Patrick: Yet Adobe continues to bill me for CC membership without delay.
Sumukan: Let me check and assist you further.
Sumukan: Thank you for staying online.
    Patrick: Yep
Sumukan: Patrick, your issue has been escalated and relevant team is working on the case and I our relevant team will contact you back via email as soon as possible.
Sumukan: I am sorry for the situation happened.
Patrick: Look, that isn't good enough. No response like "We are investigating" from that team... nothing.
    Patrick: I'm running a business
Patrick: All our graphics, icons, videos, after effects stuff and more
    Patrick: gone
Patrick: Being left out in the air with "We're working on it" doesn't cut it.
Sumukan: I apologize for the additional time this will take and look forward to a positive resolution.
Patrick: Right, and who knows when or if I'll get my files back.
Patrick: So what will Adobe do then?
    Patrick: "Sorry... things happen"
    Patrick: ?
Patrick: What is Adobe going to do for me, a long.. .LONG time customer.
Patrick: Like I said, nothing personal...
Patrick: This isn't good enough though.
Sumukan: Patrick, I'll escalate the case with priority so that our relevant team will get back to you as soon as possible.
Patrick: How long will this take to be resolved?
Patrick: Why have I not received a ticket confirmation?
Patrick: Why has no one gotten back to me to at least communicate?
Patrick: Why is this even close to acceptable? How could it be?
Sumukan: I am sorry Patrick, I escalated the case with priority and our relevant team will contact you within 2 to 3 business days and I'll send you notification regarding this conversion.
    Same Day, later on:
Pushparaj: Hello! Welcome to Adobe Customer Service.
    Pushparaj: Hello Patrick.
    Patrick: hi
    Pushparaj: How are you?
Patrick: I dont' know what is going on with Adobe.
    Patrick: I'm horrible
Patrick: If you look at my chat history, I now have something to add to it
Patrick: 1. I contacted someone a week or so ago. All my files in CC disappeared
Patrick: Folders are still there but files are gone. vanished. I didn't delete them.
Patrick: Never heard back from anyone so I contacted again
    Patrick: Today, I contacted a 3rd time
Patrick: Now, my adobe ID doesn't even work.
Pushparaj: I will help you with your issue.
    Patrick: I can't sign
    Patrick: can't sign in
Patrick: It's like I'm being erased in every manner
Patrick: So I tried my old email address and it's letting me sign in, but saying for me to activate a trial?
    Patrick: I'm a paying customer.
Patrick: My adobe ID is supposed to be: [email protected]
Pushparaj: I am sorry for the inconvenience caused.
Patrick: But all of a sudden I cannot even use it...
Patrick: And again, all my files are missing. My creative cloud files.
Pushparaj: May I please have your email address registered with Adobe?
Patrick: Thousands of dollars worth of graphics, videos and things I've purchased over time that I decided to store in CC.
    Patrick: [email protected]
Patrick: Which starting about 2 hours ago, doesn't work anymore... I have no idea why.
Pushparaj: Please allow me 3 minutes while I check the information for you.
Pushparaj: Thank you for staying online.
    Patrick: yep
Pushparaj: I see that your issue was escalated to the relevant team.
Patrick: never got an email as promised
Patrick: But now I can't even open Photoshop or any adobe programs
Patrick: It's telling me to sign in
Patrick: but now all of a sudden, after that chat with whoever that was earlier, my adobe ID isn't working
Pushparaj: Patrick, we are still are still working on your issue.
Patrick: So now I can't even use the software?
Patrick: First, my files are deleted.
Patrick: Now I can't use the software because my Adobe ID is broken?
Pushparaj: May I know the error message that you are displayed when logging in to your Adobe account.
Patrick: The Adobe ID and/or password provided does not appear to be valid. Please try again.
Patrick: when I tried to reset ( which I shouldn't have to as I save my passwords )
Patrick: It said my email isn't associated with an adobe ID
Pushparaj: Thank you for the information.
Pushparaj: Just to confirm, do you have access to the email address?
    Patrick: Yes
Pushparaj: I will send the reset password link to your email address.
    Patrick: ok
    Pushparaj: Please check your inbox.
    Patrick: nothing
Pushparaj: Please check it after deleting the cookies of your browser.
Patrick: check what? Trying to sign in?
Pushparaj: I mean to check your inbox.
Patrick: I'm using a mail app
Patrick: That has nothing to do with cookies in my browser
Pushparaj: I am sorry, I was not informed that.
    Pushparaj: Please refresh the page.
    Patrick: no email
Patrick: It's saying that it isn't even an adobe ID
Patrick: but I've been using it for a long time
Pushparaj: Patrick, I will put your issue as higher priority and escalate the case to the higher team.
Pushparaj: They will contact you within 24 hours.
Patrick: so now I can't even use my software?
    Patrick: first files, now software?
    Patrick: oh my gosh...
Pushparaj: May I have the previous case number?
Patrick: That's just it... no one is giving me case numbers
Patrick: I'm not getting emails from adobe. I'm not getting ticket numbers
Patrick: Can you see the previous chat transcripts?
Patrick: I emailed them to myself
Patrick: I'm not getting phone calls
    Patrick: emails
    Patrick: nothing
Patrick: This is effectively shutting my business down
Patrick: My business revolves around Adobe software
Patrick: And you guys aren't doing a damn thing about it other than telling me you're doing something.
Patrick: So now I can't even open Photoshop, or anything.
Pushparaj: I understand your concern, Patrick.
Patrick: Telling me to sign in again.
Patrick: It's more than a concern
    Patrick: This is absolutely absurd
Patrick: No one from adobe is doing what they say they're going to do
Pushparaj: I suggest you to use trial version software till then.
    Patrick: No.
Pushparaj: I will provide you the link for you.
Patrick: I want someone to step up and do something
Patrick: I'm a paying customer and have been for a long time.
Patrick: Why didn't I get a ticket email?
Patrick: Why is my Adobe ID not even working now?
Patrick: Where are my files? All my folders and sub folders are there in Creative Cloud
Patrick: Who's going to fix that and when?
Patrick: I'm going to sit in this chat box until someone fixes my account. I'm absolutely fed up.
Pushparaj: I understand that you have been your customer for long time.
Pushparaj: We have a lot of cases to work on. So it is delaying.
Pushparaj: For you I will put the case as urgent priority and escalate it.
Patrick: I care about other people's cases, but that simple fact alone that there are so many open cases is a concern.
Patrick: There's no reason for me to not be able to sign into the software now.
Patrick: And I have to get this fixed.
    Patrick: not later
Pushparaj: I suggest you to create an other Account and use software now. Till your issue get resolved, Patrick.
Patrick: You have to understand, nothing any of these chat agents tell me is being done.
Patrick: I'm not getting phone calls, no ticket confirmations, nothing.
Patrick: Once this chat is closed, I won't hear from anyone.
Patrick: This is how Adobe decides to run business now?
Patrick: Last chat, I was promised an email confirmation of the ticket.
Patrick: Did I get one? No
Pushparaj: I see that you have been waiting from 18th Feb.
    Patrick: Sounds about right
Patrick: Even my fonts... all of it. all creative cloud
    Patrick: Jeeesh this is ridiculous.
Pushparaj: I am really sorry, I too would have frustrated if I was in your place.
Patrick: Yep... but nothing personal with you.
    Patrick: I'm just very angry.
Patrick: So I'm going to sit here until my issue is resolved.
Patrick: Can't you contact someone that can handle this?
Patrick: All of Adobe's resources and they're going to let me go for a week with these problems?
Pushparaj: Let me check this for you.
    Patrick: Completely unacceptable
Pushparaj: Please allow me a minute.
Pushparaj: I apologize for the delay, it is longer than expected. Please allow me 3 more minutes.
    Patrick: ok
Pushparaj: Just to confirm, have you tried changing the email address of your Adobe account?
Patrick: how can I change my email address when it isn't allowing me to use my Adobe ID to begin with?
Pushparaj: Do you have any other alternate email address?
Patrick: Now here's something screwed up. I can sign into Creative Cloud with my old email address "[email protected]" but this was changed many months ago to "[email protected]"
Patrick: However, it's telling me to launch a trial.
Patrick: And even stranger still, if I sign into CC with this old email address I can see my folders online, but still no files in them.
Pushparaj: I suggest you to login using the email address [email protected].
Patrick: But it isn't recognizing that I have a paid plan
Patrick: And if I try to sign into creative cloud desktop with this?
    Patrick: it shows the spinner
Patrick: and then says you've been signed out
Pushparaj: I suggest you to login to Adobe account using the email address [email protected].
Patrick: I did... through a web browser
    Patrick: I'm signed in
Patrick: What I'm saying is it won't let me in the creative cloud application
Pushparaj: I understand that. Now please try to sign in to Creative cloud account.
    Patrick: I'm signed in
    Patrick: with the gmail address
Pushparaj: Are you able to login with the gmail address without any issues?
    Patrick: to creative.adobe.com yes
Patrick: But now the desktop software
    Patrick: but not
Patrick: but not the desktop software
Pushparaj: Do you have access to your Gmail email address?
    Patrick: yes
Pushparaj: I will sent the reset password link to your gmail email address.
Pushparaj: A reset password email has been sent to [email protected].
Patrick: to reset the password for the .me email?
Patrick: Why is "[email protected]" no longer my adobe ID?
Pushparaj: I see that is the issue.
Pushparaj: Please check the email address [email protected].
Patrick: I can sign into creative cloud "online" website with the gmail address
Pushparaj: Are you able to view your subscriptions?
    Patrick: Yes
    Patrick: however, I can't...
Patrick: Okay here are my steps now:
Patrick: On my computer, the little creative cloud icon on my MAC, at the top.
    Patrick: I click on it
    Pushparaj: Sure.
Patrick: It's prompting me to sign in
Patrick: I sign in with the gmail address now
Patrick: The spinner/loader displays like it's thinking
Patrick: then it says "You have been signed out"
Pushparaj: Thank you for the information.
Pushparaj: Please allow me 3 minutes while I check this for you.
Patrick: Another way to produce an error, I did the following:
Patrick: 1. Tried to open Adobe Illustrator CC
Patrick: 2. The Adobe sign in thing popped up
Patrick: 3. I entered the credentials
Patrick: 4. It asked me to agree to terms and conditions
Patrick: 5. It said, start your Illustrator trial
Patrick: 6. I said license this software
Patrick: 7. It's aksing me for a serial number
Patrick: which I don't have because I'm a cloud subscriber
Pushparaj: Thank you for the information.
Pushparaj: I see that this is a technical issue. I'll need to transfer this chat to the technical support team so that this issue is resolved in this first contact itself.
Patrick: what about my other problems?
Patrick: Is this where I don't hear from anyone?
Pushparaj: Yes, I think all your issues will be resolved after you sign in with the email address [email protected].
Pushparaj: Shall I transfer this chat.
    Pushparaj: *?
    Patrick: ok
    Pushparaj: Thank you for confirming.
info: Please wait while I transfer the chat to the appropriate group.
info: You are now chatting with 'Mohammed'
Mohammed: Hello. Welcome to Adobe Technical Support.
    Patrick: Hi
    Mohammed: Hi Patrick.
Mohammed: Please allow me a moment while I look into your account & verify the details.
Mohammed: Thank you for staying online.
    Patrick: No problem
Mohammed: As I understand that you are unable to sign in to the Creative Cloud desktop App as gets the Error "You've been Signed out", is that correct ?
    Patrick: Correct.
Patrick: And while waiting to be transferred I uninstalled and reinstalled the desktop app
    Patrick: still not working
Patrick: My account is a complete disaster. Not sure how much of the transcript you read
    Mohammed: Thank you for confirming.
Mohammed: I'll be glad to check and help you with that.
Patrick: My adobe ID was: [email protected] and worked until about 3 hours ago.
Patrick: Now that adobe ID magically does not exist.
Patrick: So it let me sign into http://creative.adobe.com with my old ID which is [email protected]
Patrick: Pushparaj suggested I sign into the desktop application with the gmail address. and here I am
Mohammed: Thank you for the information.
Mohammed: As I checked, you have the subscription under : [email protected].
    Patrick: Ok.
Mohammed: Adobe ID does not exists with the email address : [email protected]
    Patrick: Okay lets stop there.
    Patrick: It should exist.
Patrick: Matter of fact, I've used it for a long time.
Patrick: I even have it stored in my 1password program
    Mohammed: It is not possible.
Patrick: I mean, media is my business.
    Patrick: Yes it is
Mohammed: Adobe ID doesn't exists with the email address : [09:16:27] Mohammed: Adobe ID does not exists with the email address : [email protected]
Patrick: That's part of the mystery.
    Patrick: I'm not insane here.
Patrick: Matter of fact... look at this:
Mohammed: I have checked with me resources, Adobe ID doesn't exists.
Mohammed: You have the subscription under : [email protected].
Mohammed: Please try to sign in with the Adobe ID: [email protected]. to creative cloud App.
    Patrick: It doesn't work.
Patrick: Let me try to be clear, and I'm trying to be patient.
Patrick: When I first signed up for CC a year or so ago
    Patrick: I used the gmail
Patrick: I later switched my adobe ID to "[email protected]"
Patrick: I receive my billing statements at the .me
Patrick: I've signed into teh app with .me
Patrick: It's saved in my 1password program under .me
Mohammed: I am sorry, you cannot change the subscription email address from one to another.
    Patrick: You're not ...
    Patrick: oh my gosh
Patrick: Do you have an email I can forward my receipt to?
Mohammed: You need to cancel the subscription from the gmail account and purchase it from me.com account.

Patrick: Mohommed, that isn't my point.
Patrick: I know something is "wrong" with my account.
Patrick: I'm missing thousands of dollars worth of files
Patrick: They were deleted/removed/vanished from my creative cloud folder
Mohammed: For File Sync and Font sync feature and issues, you need to contact our Phone Support Team.

These aren't all the chats... Just what I saved and had the email transcript sent to me.

Just an update... A rep contacted me and we did a screen share. They were convinced that I wasn't full of <insert proper word here>. They promised to get back to me in a few days, and now? A few months later? Nothing.
Still no files. Still no correction... Still no nothing from Adobe.
The person I spoke to was kind, saying he'd make sure I got CC for free for a while...
    Still though, no follow up.
Adobe, are you going to correct this or just let your customer suffer at your mistakes?

  • My whole itunes library vanished twice within 3 months. I'd like to know why.

OK, I counted to 10 and took a deep breath before with writing this. I don't want to come off like a disgruntled
hater, but let's just say that right now I'm not quite a happy camper! Three months ago my iTunes library was
wiped out although in general my computer seems to be running perfectly. At  that time I called Apple and since
my computer is no longer under warranty, I had to pay $55 to ask "why was my iTunes library wiped out" and
to my amazement, no answer could be given. The person even went to his supervisor but still the reason could not be found.
I was told that since they didn't have an answer, I wouldn't be charged for the question but it was on my charge card bill
    and that wasn't fun.
My computer simply took it upon itself to create a new blank library and no one knows why? OK, I can live with that
and $55 won't break me but there is a principle involved. Let me also say that Apple did offer to download all the itunes
I bought from the iTunes store but I didn't need that because I had all the songs backed up on an external drive. For $55 I could have
re-purchased the songs anyway! Also: They obviously could not return my original songs that I created on Garageband.
I recreated my library after some time and effort that could have been used doing other things but all was well. It's not just an entertainment thing, it's also a work thing, so it upsets me when it vanishes and no one at Apple knows why, not even the geniuses?
Well today the whole library disappeared again and I'm really annoyed. (iTunes version 9.2.1 on Tiger 10.4.11)
From now on I will not store any songs in ITunes. If I have to burn a CD, I'll transfer the songs from my hard drive to the library, burn them and then delete
them from iTunes. It simple is not a stable place to store songs, especially when there is nothing one can do to prevent this.
This is not a big problem. It's just a pain in the neck. But it makes you wonder ~ Why do things disappear without the user having anything to do with it
and is this glitch confined only to iTunes? I have read about other people who have had the same exact experience. It's not the end of the world, and it does
point out he need to back everything up, but why does it happen? There has to be a common thread that runs through all of the anecdotes from people with the same exact experience. Is Tiger too old to handle iTunes 9.2.1? Is there some secret MB limit that if you go over it, a new library is automatically created? Why doesn't it save the old library? It just doesn't make sense, especially when Apple can't explain why or how to prevent this. As I mentioned, this isn't the end of the world and I don't want make a big thing out it. I just want to know how files can be deleted without the user doing anything to delete them. I feel like I'm not in full control of my computer. I love Apple products and I always will but saying I wouldn't be charged for the call and then charging me anyway doesn't seem very Apple-ish. Their customer service is awesome but this was not right. They did say that I would be charged regardless of whether or not my problem was resolved (and I agreed to that) but when it couldn't be resolved they said they wouldn't charge me. A couple of days later, an iTunes rep e-mailed me the downloads for the the songs I bought which as I mentioned I didn't need because they were backed up but I guess they assumed that was a "resolution" to my problem. They couldn't however return my original songs and although I had them backed up, there were a few that were not and those versions are gone forever. But life goes on. I just won't store songs in iTunes anymore. (deep breath) I still love Apple and all the things I can do with their amazing products. I know I should upgrade my 6 year old iMAC and get Time Machine and Lion and all that jazz but but I just wanna make music
and become a technician. My puter works perfectly and I have 3 ext drives each with 1TB of space. It's iTunes that has a glitch. (imo)

I dislike every iteration of iTunes more & more, in fact almost every iteration of any Apple App is worse than the one before, it's also sad that Apple is evermore closing off the really good 3rd party Apps, I use Audion since Apple bout SoundHam Mp & totally ruinrd it...
    http://www.panic.com/audion/
As far as backups go, I gave up on the sillyTime Machine, it seemeed to do it's stuff, but I could never get a good restore!
Every other Backup App I have, (about a dozen or more), always work.
Never bought anything on iTunes, nor am I likely ever to do so.
It's not even my birthday, but your post now has ne listening to Animals by Pink Floyd for the 1st time in years!
Back to your losses, How sure are you the of the Disk integrity?
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Help. I have a Google Hangout in 40mins and my sound seems to have vanished. I went to Sys Prefs and it came up with Digital Out....and the Internal Speakers option is no longer there. How do I reboot, or fix this please?

help. I have a Google Hangout in 40mins and my sound seems to have vanished. I went to Sys Prefs and it came up with Digital Out....and the Internal Speakers option is no longer there. How do I reboot, or fix this please?

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Some may not apply to your model. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. Make sure you have a fully up-to-date installation of OS X.
    3. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. Other third-party software that has been reported to interfere with sound output includes "Boom" and "Samsung Kies." If applicable, uninstall according to the developer's instructions (not by dragging something to the Trash.)
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select Built-in Output from the list on the left. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them.
    7. If a red light is visible in the audio-out port when sound should be playing, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. If not, the machine needs to be serviced. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by the warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
    9. If you have a MacBook Air, turn off Bluetooth and restart.
    10. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    11. Reset the NVRAM.
    12. Reset the SMC.
    13. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/Audio
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Recreate your settings in the Sound preference pane.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    14. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    15. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • Menu bar icons vanished and iPod not showing up in iTunes anymore

All menu bar icons on the right side (keyboard, clock, battery) vanished.
It's not possible to get them back by mark their visability in the system configuration. The system just ignores any attempt to do that (I can mark the check box, but nothing appears on the menu bar; after leaving and returning to the panel, the mark has gone).
Besides of that, my iPod doesn't show up in iTunes anymore (but does on the desktop).
My laptop may be physically damaged as it fell down to the floor a few days ago.
    Can anybody help?

    Welcome To Discussions Daniel Lerch!
Create a new Admin user account, and see if the same problem occurs while logged in to that account.
Have you run the Apple Hardware Test and also Repair Disk?
THESE ARE THE STEPS FOR USING DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR YOUR HD
1.Insert the System Install disk, Mac OS X CD-ROM disk, or Restore DVD disk, then restart the computer while holding the C key. Use the System disk, of the OS, that is currently installed.
2.Once started up from CD or DVD, choose Disk Utility from the Installer contextual menu for Panther, or Utilities for Tiger, on the Menubar at the top of the screen.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3.Click the First Aid tab.
4.Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5.Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
6.Click Repair. If DU reports errors it has fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
7.When finished, select Quit Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
8.Select Quit Installer from the Installer menu.
9.In the resulting pop-up window, choose restart.
10.After the computer has restarted, you can eject the CD.
Repeat steps 5 & 6, but select the Hard Drive this time. It's usually the first listed with the manufacturer's model number.
Make note of the S.M.A.R.T. status.

  • In a global transaction 2 records are inserted in a DB, but only one of them is committed

    Hello,
in a ATMI application I run the following servers using one DB2 database:
A kind of Frontend, which receives requests over TCP-IP and sends these requests to other servers by the following calls: tpbegin, tpcall S1, tpcall S2, tpcommit
S1, written in C with embedded SQL: inserts 1 record A
S2, written in COBOL with embedded SQL: inserts 1 record B
Here is a snippet of the config-File:
    >>>>>>
    *GROUPS
    GROUP1
          LMID=server    GRPNO=1
          TMSNAME=TMS_UDB TMSCOUNT=2
          OPENINFO="UDB_XA:db=xxx,uid=yyy,pwd=zzz"
    *SERVERS
    FE     SRVGRP=GROUP1 SRVID=200 MIN=1 MAX=1 MINDISPATCHTHREADS=1 MAXDISPATCHTHREADS=2 CLOPT="-s FE:services"
    S1     SRVGRP=GROUP1 SRVID=100 MIN=1 MAX=1 CLOPT="-s S1:services"
    S2     SRVGRP=GROUP1 SRVID=700 MIN=1 MAX=5 CLOPT="-s S2:services"
    <<<<<<
My problem is: only record B is in the database at the end of the transaction. If I am debugging the transaction I can see that record A is inserted into the database, but it has vanished after the tpcommit.
All servers are built with "-r UDB_XA" and call tpopen during initialisation.
I have produced a trace, where I see the following:
    Tuxedo Version 12.1.1.0, 64-bit, Linux RH, DB2 9.7
    gtrid is the same everywhere
tpreturn in S2 calls xa_end: this is the server which inserts the commited record B
tpreturn in S1 does NOT call xa_end.
    Thanks everyone.
    Georg

    Hi Todd,
In the call of S1 the TPNOTRAN flag is not set
    S1 ist built with: buildserver -o ... -f "source/S1.c $(LINK_OBJS)" -r UDB_XA -s S1:services
All the servers are built alike.
Statements like SQL CONNECT do not exist in S1
What does irritate me in the trace: there are lines with "tpopen = 1". In the documentation the return value for error is -1, and we check for -1 in the code. What does the 1 mean?
    The trace follows beneath.
    Regards
    Georg

  • My external 2TB Western Digital external drive just vanished.

My external 2TB Western Digital just vanished as well. [I have read many posts very similar to mine in the MacRumors forums and also Western Digital forums.
I never installed any WD software when I purchased it , or since, but formatted the drive with 2 partitions as usual with Apple Disk Utility.
I have been using it for months and no problems. Then yesterday I tried to access the drive and it gave me the message "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" and asked if I wanted to Initilize it.
I then checked with Disk Utility and where I formerly had 2 partitions it showed only one and said it was empty!
    No data at all!
I have been using this drive with OS 10.9.2 for a while, it was fine untill everything vanished yesterday.
I then updated to 10.9.3 but the drive is still 'gone'.
    So far no fixes posted.
Help me Apple....what have you done?!?!!!
    Adam
    I have a MacBook Pro.

Apparently WD released a new WD 'Smartware' Version in 2013 to address this problem with Mavericks and WD External drives. I can find no confirmation from any source that this works and indeed many warnings against using any WD software for setting up or fixing their drives when used with Macs and Mavericks. Anyway...this is just for Smartware.
         http://wdc.com/wdproducts/wdsmartwareupdate/wdsmartware.asp?id=wdfGeneric&os=mac
I can find no Firmware updates for the issue anywhere.
Have filed a case with WD Support a couple days ago; still waiting for any response.
The MacRumors Forums, Western Digital's forums, and Apple's Support Communities all had threads about lost data after connecting Western Digital external hard drives to computers after updating to Mavericks.
WD is happy to announce the release of WD SmartWare Version 1.3.6 for Mac 10.5-10.9.
Fixed an issue related to reports of some customers, under certain conditions, experiencing data loss when updating to Apple's OS X Mavericks (10.9).
The WD SmartWare update is available for download from Western Digital's website.

  • Inserting new section creates 2 pages at a time, cannot delete one

    Hi,
Building out a series of two page templates, and I cannot insert a blank page, or even duplicate, without pages creating two new pages. When I try to delete one, both vanish.
When I duplicate, the third page matches the original first, and there is then also a blank second page between both.
My main page does have a full bleed rectangle serving as the fill color if that makes any difference.
    Thanks

I have my default template set with wrap turned off. Inserted objects then don't cause these problems. Before turning wrap off I set the extra space/gutter to 2 points rather than the default 12 points.
Here are the full instructions I wrote some time ago for setting up your own template.
You need to create your own default template. Set up your document with the margins, headers, etc. as you'd like. Redefine all of the paragraph & character styles to have your desired font.
While you're at it, you might want to set default styles for all objects, text boxes, tables, paragraph styles, etc. Start with a blank document & insert an object. Change the color, wrap, etc. to your choosing & then go to Format > Advanced > Define Default Shape Style then delete the object. Repeat with an image/photo, a text box & a table.
Now, save this as a template then, in Pages > Preferences, select this template as the default for new documents. All of your new documents will have these settings for inserted objects, images & tables. Unfortunately, the settings won't apply to any other templates or "foreign" documents you open with Pages.

  • Mail dock icon has vanished

Hi, I have a strange problem with my Mail dock icon. It is completely transparent. It is still there, but I can't see it, I see an empty space, with only the 'Mail' text on top of it. I still can click it to open up mail. I already tried to remove it and add a new alias - and rebooted the computer. The Mail icon in the dock has vanished...

Have you tried trashing the mail.plist file from your Home Preferences folder?
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run _*Repair Disk*_ from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select *Disk Utility.*
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click *First Aid.*
    Click _*Repair Disk.*_
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop
