Install from SCSI CD fails: ERROR: boot device didn't show up after 30

I have a x86 based server w/SCSI HD and DVD drive.
Install fails with following.
Waiting 30 seconds for device /dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_201108
ERROR: boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds
   Falling back to interactive prompt
You can try to fix the problem manually, logout when you are finished
sh: can't access tty; job contro turned off
[ramfs /]#
I hooked up a IDE DVD drive and using same CD installs OK.  Then, once installed, I switch my DVD back to SCSI that failed the install, and guess what?  Arch booted from my HD now recognizes the SCSI DVD drive, I can mount it and so on.  Looks to me like the install kernel doesn't support my SCSI DVD drive but the installed kernel does.
I need the Arch install to work from the SCSI DVD drive on my system.  I'm trying to develop an Arch distro for my particular system, which there are about a dozen of in the field, they all have SCSI DVD and no IDE drives.  Will I have to add a SCSI driver to the boot kernel?  Or is my problem something else?
I notice there is no /dev/disk/by-label (ther is a /dev/disk/by-id  by-label  and by-uuid).
I do a:
"[ramfs /]# lsmod | grep sr_mod"
sr_mod        14951   0
cdrom        36329   1   sr_mod
scsi_mod    131482   7  sg,sr_mod,sd_mod,libata,mptspi,mptscsih,scsi_transport_spi
[ramfs /]# lsmod | grep scsi
mptscsih        20040   1   mptspi
mptbase            63459    2   mptspi,pmtscsih
scsi_transport_spi    20059   1   mptspi
scsi_mod        131482  7   sg,sr_mod,sd_mod,libata,mptspi,mptscsih,scsi_stransport_spi

scrath "I notice there is no /dev/disk/by-label (ther is a /dev/disk/by-id  by-label  and by-uuid)."
Should be: I notice there is no /dev/disk/by-label (there is a /dev/disk/by-id  by-path  and by-uuid).

  • Dual Boot Arch & Mac OS X(Boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds)

I was trying to Dual Boot Arch & Mac OS X on my new Mac book pro, I followed the steps (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/MacBookPro)
Dual Boot (Arch & Mac OS X)
    Two possibilities:
    - Install Bootcamp, resize the Mac OS X partition
When Mac OS X installation is finished. Go on http://refit.sourceforge.net and download rEFIT (Mac disk image)
To install rEFIT, mount the rEFIT.dmg file (it is normally automatic).
There is an other way (refer to rEFIT documentation) but you can open a terminal then you copy /Volumes/rEFIT/efi/ to /
    # cp -r /Volumes/rEFIT/efi /
    To install rEFIT :
    # cd /efi/refit/
    # ./enable.sh
Now we can synchronized MBR with GPT partition table thanks to rEFIT so you restart your computer. You can see rEFIT, you press down key to access to the Partitioning Tool. You press y to accept.
Put your Arch Linux CD in the CD-ROM drive first then restart the computer. You can press C to boot from the CD or you can choose it in the rEFIT menu.
Now it is the typical Arch Linux installation.
So I burn the archlinux-2010.05-core-i686.iso to an blank disc on mac then restart the computer , press C to boot from the CD.
After choose to boot Arch linux and then I got this
Waiting for 30 seconds for device /dev/disk/by-label/ARCH-201005...
ERROR:boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds...
                Falling back to interactive prompt
                You can try to fix the problem manually, log out when you finished /bin/sh: can't access tty;
                job control turned off
    [ramfs /]#
    [ramfs /]#
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

You need to make sure that's the exact name of your iso disc. If it's not, it isn't a big deal. I've run into problems on this with my arch USB drive.
Once you get to the [ramfs /]# prompt, type in:
mv /dev/disk/by-label/(insert name of the current cd here) /dev/disk/by-label/ARCH-201005
    exit
It should then be able to boot from the cd
    did:
mv /dev/disk/by-label/(insert name of the current cd here) /dev/disk/by-label/ARCH-201005
    exit
    shows:
ERROR: mounting was successful, but /bootmnt/isomounts file doex not exist.
    Then I checked:
    cd /bootmnt
    ls
    archlinux-2010.05-core-i686.iso
    exit
shows another problem /boot/init does not exist
    exit
    kernel panic!

  • I'm receiving error Boot Device Not Found and Hard disk not exist when I boot up my laptop

I'm receicing the error Boot Device Not Found when i power on my HP G60-235DX laptop.  After following HP's recommended troubleshooting steps, I receive error Hard disk not exist.  Hmmmm....that's a little concerning.  My guess is I need a new hard drive?    I have the 17 recovery disks I made when I setup this laptop, however I'm not sure if they will resolve this issue.  Any suggestions?

One of 3 things has happened, listed from most likely to least likely
    1. Hard drive has died, replace it with one of the same size or larger, then use the HP recovery discs to re-install windows.
2, The motherboard has serious problems. (Replace the notebook)
    3. The hard drive cable that connects it to the motherboard has somehow failed, not very likely. (replace the cable)
Replace the hard drive with a new one and use your recovery discs to get Windows back on it.
Here is your service manual, will show you how to replace the hard drive

I am able to access to lun and able to write data to it without any problem.
    Questions:
    1. what does this error mean?
    2. could this impact the performance?
    3. possible fix?

    Thanks.

it means that when the sun tried to send or recive data to the drive it could not. this could be cable or scsi controler. but the most likely proublem is your drive. i would get the data off and try a new drive be fore it fails.

Just a question, did you install this host by using DHCP + TFTPBOOT ? If affirmative please follow the recipe below, otherwise nevermind it :)
In your vm.cfg file, if you have configured the following variables:
    bootargs = 'bridge=vlan500,mac=00:16:3E:18:F8:49,type=netfront'
    bootloader = '/usr/bin/pypxeboot'
this will try pypxeboot by default. If you have this host in the DHCP server, it will receive his network information, but after it will try to jump to TFTPBOOT that will fail since machines is already installed and unlinked. There are two ways to fix it:
    - Do not use pypxeboot as the bootloader and instead, use the pygrub (in this case you can comment the bootargs line)
    - Patch pypxeboot to work as desired. Please check pypxeboot script do not working as desired? for more information. We did a fix in our OracleVM infrastructure to solve this issue.

  • KT4AV boot device choices not showing up

I am installing my first KT4AV (6712) board in my main computer. The manual shows dozens of choices for a boot device including USB CD and IDE CD. The only choices that actually show up on my BIOS settings are floppy and the hard drives.
I need to boot from CD to install some special partitioning software BEFORE I can load windows. Since it is ONLY on CD and is too large to copy to a floppy how can I do that?
I have an internal CD installed in the machine and an external USB one, if that helps. Disabling all boot devices didn't give me the option to use CD either.
Tried to call tech support, but they wouldn't let me stay on hold for over 7 minutes (about). Forced to leave a message and my experience is that most companies never, return those messages.
Since the upgraded computer is physically built, but not loaded, I'm in a mess. While I could put all the old parts back in, it would be a waste of time.

Since this problem was holding me up, I spent even more time on it. It appears that the CD was not considered a valid boot device because it is attached via an add-in controller card instead of the motherboard controller. All the other models of MSI motherboards that I have tried this on have allowed this to work, but apparently not this board.
When I removed the hard drives from the second motherboard channel and put the CD on that channel, instead, it showed up in the boot device list. While the external USB CD drive now shows up also, it refuses to acknowledge that the CD in the drive is bootable. It must be bootable because it is the same one that I did boot from when it is in the internal CD drive. Not sure why the external drive now shows up, but since it doesn't work, it doesn't matter. Also, I know the external CD drive works fine on other machines because I use it to troubleshoot problems.
Tech support has not returned my call from a couple of hours ago. Is that typical? Do they usually return calls? If so, how long does it usually take? While many people call before they try any solutions, I only call when I'm stuck so if I don't get a quick call back, the project is usually late.

    Thank you so much...

I was advised to run PVM on VirtualBox. When running HVM, it complained about the CPU not supporting for Hardware Virtualization even though I'm sure that the CPU and MB support Hardware Virtualization.
    Any thoughts or comments?

  • OVM3: Error Boot loader didn't return any data trying to create PVM guests

    Hi all,
I am trying to build a pvm guest on OVM3.
I have the OEL5 iso available as ftp://172.30.2.29/oracle_linux/x86_64/5.8/V31120-01-OracleLinux-R5-U8-Server-x86_64-dvd.iso
So I create a new VM, I choose it to be an "oracle Linux 5", PVM guest, I want the boot options to be "network" first and "disk" as second option.
I put ftp://172.30.2.29/oracle_linux/x86_64/5.8/V31120-01-OracleLinux-R5-U8-Server-x86_64-dvd.iso in the network boot path and, when I start the vm, i got the error "Boot loader didn't return any data" (see the log below).
    What am I doing wrong?
    thanks for every answer!

After this, the cursor stops blinking and nothing else happens.
I am using UEFI, however I booted the disk using AHCI as well and got the same error, so I don't believe that its causing the problem.
I downloaded the ISO from the torrent link on the Arch downloads page, checked the "verify contents" box in Windows when I burned the disk, and tried burning the ISO on a different disk.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

alphaniner wrote:Don't worry about the Radeon error for now. The other errors related to your drive bus are probably the problem. Normally I'd recommend checking cables and connections. But I've never seen a "SError:" line with so many 'details' and you have such errors on two ports, so it may be more complicated than that. Have you searched for info on Linux support of the controller?
    Thanks for the response.
I searched for the things you wrote. By "drive bus" and "controller" do you mean the bus driver and device controller from this diagram?
    http://www.linuxforu.com/wp-content/upl … 1/ldd1.jpg
Additionally, I found the following forum post while searching: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2038227
Does that mean I should try reconnecting my drives to different ports on my motherboard?

  • Restored 10.6 OS from CD and fails to Boot after Combo upgrade

I have a clean install of Lion on my internal drive and an external clone of the HD from the previous Snow Leopard install. The Clone worked until I updated via the latest auto update. I have App's and other settings to transfer to Lion from this clone so want to get it working so I can ensure all the App's are upgraded to work on Lion or are deleted.
After the external drive failed to boot I reinstalled the system from my Snow Leopard Install CD, not the 24-inch iMac (Mid 2007) restore CD.
I then used Auto updater to install the combo and other updates to 10.6.8 this booted fine until I upgraded Safari 5.1 and Java - the last items that came up on the software updater. Upon restart, the boot failed in the last portion of the boot and at this point the Apple emblem went away and the round circle with diaginoal line apeared.
On starting with the option key down, the clone disk 10.6.8 shows as being available, along with the internal Drive, for booting.
Starting with "command + S" gets through to the last line of the process then states "waiting on Root"
When compaired to a Snow OS that boots OK it is the last line of code before the curser is ready for entering a command.
Can anyone tell me what to look for or how to repair this error so that I can get my data across to Lion. Thanks

Well, in case anyone else has a similar problem I managed to fix the system by the following process:
I reinstalled 10.6.0 from the retail Snow Leopard CD. The drive Booted OK but I needed to be upgraded to 10.6.8 to use the migration tool so I then upgraded using the Software Update utility. Boot failed again at this point and could not be fixed by anything I did.
I then reinstalled 10.6.0 from the CD to try again, but the HD would not boot this time around.
I downloaded CleanApp by Synium Software (http://www.syniumsoftware.com/cleanapp/) on a commendation from the famous eBook, "Take Control of installing Lion" by Joe Kissell of TidBits. I used this from my Lion HD to remove all orphan files, PPC files and Apps, and other junk. Snow Leapard still not Booting after repairs by various disk repair utilities including Apples.
I Booted from my internal HD using Lion and ran SuperDuper to make a new Clone of the failed HD on a second external HD. Took a day and a night to run while I was at work, but the new clone would not boot at this stage so I ran SuperDuper again using the "Smart Update Backup" option. This just adds changed files or missing files to the clone. At the end of this process I had a running Clone that would boot on 10.6.0.
I Booted from the second Clone and used the Software Update utility then to up grade in the two stages the Auto system used to bring my OS up to 10.6.8. This was successful and I had a Bootable Snow Leopard with no old Apps from which to Migrate my data.

  • Working windows install on ssd but fails to boot when old hdd is removed

I bought a Samsung 840 ssd for my Thinkpad T510 to use as my primary hdd and an Ultrabay Sata adapter to mount an additional hdd. I clean installed Windows 7 64 bit on the ssd . Previously I was using 32 bit Windows but I because I also upgraded to 8 gb ram I needed to switch to 64 bit. I used the Windows USB DVD tool to create a bootable USB to install Windows from.
Everything went fine. Because I have two hdds both running windows, when I boot the computer it prompts me to pick which Windows 7 to run. Both run fine. However, and this is the problem I need help with, when I remove the original hdd leaving only the Samsung ssd the computer won't boot - it says no valid operating system.
I tried updating the BIOS but that didn't help.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!!*
*Update: I used EasyBCD to copy the boot file to the ssd. Now I am able to boot fine on the ssd with the old hdd removed. So it would seem as if not having the boot file on the ssd was the problem. Still, when I boot up, I'm prompted to pick between booting Windows 7 (new ssd) and Windows 7 (old hdd thats no longer connected). Obviously if I pick the latter it fails to boot. If I pick the former it works fine (problem solved!), but I'd like to be able to skip this prompt  when I turn on my comp. Any ideas?
Also, I'm curious why the boot file wasn't on the ssd already once I installed windows 7 on that drive. Is it because the old hdd was still physically connected while windows was installing? If re-installing windows on the ssd without any other drives present would likely make all these problems go away I'm inclined to just do that, but does anyone know for a fact why this would be necessary?
    Thanks!!

I have had similar issues in the past, but it was nothing to do with the T510. It is solely a windows issue. It is happening because , with both the drives installed the system can "see" the modified boot file. When you take out the ultrabay hard drive the system can no longer see the boot file, hence no valis operating system.
For me to fix it in the past, was a bit of mucking around. First off see if you can download "vistaboot" pro v3.3. With that you should be able to copy the bootfile to the SSD. If you can't do that you'll probably have to use a Windows install disk, booting from the DVD drive, wait till it loads up, select keyboard info, and at the next screen choose "start up repair" .
Sad to say, even that is not a guaranteed fix; it failed for me last Friday and I had to do a fresh install. If you don't have a Windows DVD, google for X17-59465 or GSP1RMCULXFRER_EN_DVD. They are the latest version of Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. You should find valid, and legal, download links at digitalriver, the official microsoft site and they most likely be posted somewhere on the mydigitallife forums.
    Have fun !!

  • No boot device on a new SSD after just a few reboots

I received a batch of new M4 128 gb 2.5" SSD's yesterday, and used one of them on a known good working machine.  I installed the SSD on SATA port 0, then commenced loading Windows 7 Enterprise on the SSD.  I booted to the SSD a couple of times just doing updates to Windows 7, then noticed that the SSD would no longer boot (no boot device found).  I took that SSD out, and tried another new one.  The same thing happened with another SSD from the same batch.  I then tried using a different SATA cable, a different SATA port, a completely differrent workstation, etc.  to no avail.  I tried booting from a normal Hard drive on both workstations with no problems.  Now, in all cases the BIOS detects the SSD's just fine, I can put the SSD's in a drive dock and see all the data, I can even boot from another device and image the SSD using Clonezilla, they just won't boot.  I got the latest firmware update ISO and booted from the resulting DVD, but the firmware on the SSD's is already the latest version.  The workstations I am using are DELL precision T5500's, and the Bios option for RAID is automatic/AHCI, a setting I have used with SSD for a year with no previous problems.  Also, I have been using these same workstations with these exact M4 SSDs for a long period now, and have never experienced a problem before.  Finally, and this is strange, if I add another hard drive to the workstation, (a ahrd drive with no partitions of format), and select that other hard drive from the one-time boot menu, the M4 will boot!  I thought that was very strange.  (I did double check by the way, once Windows starts, the M4 is the c: drive, and the other drive has no data on it).  I am going to perform some more testing today, but any help on this would be very much appreciated.  Thanks!

I just discovered something new on this.  Apparently, Windows put the boot loader on a small partition on the other Hard drive in the system for some reason, something I haven't seen before.  So, even though I install Windows on the SSD in SATA0, the drive in SATA1 is the one that gets the small (100mb) partition with the boot loader.  Is there any reason why that would happen?  I'm thinking maybe there is a difference in the drives that could be confusing the order of the drives as presented to Windows?  Incidentally, the other drive in the system is a Seagate Barricda 2TB model: ST2000DM001.  What I am doing to remedy the situation is to remove all drives but the SSD, install Windows, and determine if there are any subsequent problems.

  • TS1424 Apple Mobile device does not show up after installing 10.0.7.21

Receive message "Apple Device not started". Apple Device does not show up in Adminstrative Tools, Services. Windows 7 64bit, IOS6.0.1.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
The section Install missing components has advice on breaking down the iTunes installer into the individual .msi files which might prove useful if a component such as Apple Mobile Device Support won't install normally.

  • Installing from Application Catalogue fails on Windows 7 computers

    All,
Has anyone else experienced this issue with installing apps from the application catalog. The applications do not install won Windows 7 computers and UAC prompts for admin credentials. The same apps work fine on XP computers.
I tried using a silent switch and get the following error "The software change returned error code 0x643(1603)." Again, with XP computers there are no issues.
The command line I used was msiexec /i "application.msi" /qb and msiexec /i "application.msi" /q. I have used the default options when setting up the app in SCCM. The application catalogue has been added to the trusted sites and the install permissions
is set to All Users in the Computer Agent policy.
I have also allowed users to define their primary device in the User Settings.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Have you tried to manually install the same application with same command line on Windows 7 machine ( I know, you've already tried this but NOT sure using same command line and same user or nor?)

SRV02 is going away eventually, so currently moving VM'S TO SRV01.
I was able to migrate the VM without issue but when attempting to install the guest services; I get the following error:

Check that WinRM is installed and running on server MGMT01.DOMAIN.LOCAL. For more information use the command "winrm helpmsg hresult" and

WinRM is running on MGMT01 and I'm running the VMM console as a domain admin.  Firewalls have been disabled on management server and both hosts.
What else should I be looking at?

I attempted to create a new VM and was met with the same error but I'm able to create a VM using Hyper-V manager.
