Install seems to require outrageous amount of disc space

Hi, I just purchased a copy of Logic 7 and the system requirements are for 10.4.6 or above, I am currently running 10.4.1, the installer says I don't have enough free space on my hard drive. This is true of all three of my macs, each one says I need more space than is required and each amount is different, as each hard drive is a different size. all of the hard drives say they need a huge amount of GB to install, (all of the computers require a different amount to install for some reason) I have at least 20 gigs or more available on all of them. I barely have any space taken up on any of them, I store almost everything on an external hard drive. So, what's the deal. I mean I don't think the combo pack should require 300GB to install, or am I mistaken?

"I mean I don't think the combo pack should require 300GB to install, or *am I mistaken?* "
Yes you are. According to http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_4_11_Combo_Update__PPC *File Size: 180.8MB*

  • Just recently I'm showing that I've lost a very large amount of disc space for no apparent reason?

I have 750GB MacBook Pro and up until the other day I showed 250GB used and 500GB unused.  I discovered this because the past two days my computer would just freeze and I couldn't do anything.  So I ran the Disc Utility and it found some errors and fixed them.  So I'm wondering if the 400GB of lost disc space now has something to do with the computer locking up? I've searched all the folders and added up their size and still come back to 250GB that I can see.  So I'm assuming there's something hidden somewhere that's eating up over half my hard disc space?  HELP!

So somewhere I have between 450 - 500 GB's taking up my disk space?
Yes, exactly. The total used, per the sidebar, is 735 GB, but the total at the top is 269 GB, leaving 466 GB unaccounted-for.  As mentioned in the Other large files section of the Where did my Disk Space go? article, the similar free apps don't show things the logged-on user isn't permitted to see. Unfortunately, the version of WhatSize on the AppStore doesn't, either. A few of those are detailed in the green box.
First, have you Verified your internal HD, per the link in the yellow box at the top of the article?  If not, do so.  If that doesn't say your disk "appears to be ok," follow the instructions there to start from your Recovery HD and Repair it, then have WhatSize re-measure your drive.
If that doesn't help, do you have more than one user account (besides the 230 GB bkundinger)?  If so, log on to the other(s), use WhatSize to see how large those home folders are, and add them to the 269 GB total.
If not, or if that doesn't explain the difference, you need to be able to see everything.  Probably the best way to do that is with the version of WhatSize that you get directly from the vendor -- just click the link in the green box or go to http://whatsizemac.com.  That version has the "As Admin" icon in the toolbar, per the sample in the green box.  Click it and enter your Admin password, then have it re-measure your internal HD.
That will take a few moments, of course, but the resulting display should show everything, including the missing 466 GBs.  As noted, don't delete anything you don't understand; if in doubt, post the new screenshot here.

  • Amount of Disc space to give to Parallels

I would appreciate some advice. I am a satisfied user of a Macbook pro and have just ordered a Mac Pro with a 750 gig drive to be used as the family machine (replacing a Windows PC). I will be installing Parallels and XP plus Office to keep the family happy and will also be using the Mac applications. What size virtual disc would you suggest I set up for Parallels? Is it possible to set up the system so it automatically loads Parallels and XP on start up so the family see a fast seamless machine (rather than loading Leopard and then having to click on Parallels and then XP etc?
Any advice as to how to make the family immediately at home with the Mac (initially using it as a Windows machine) would be much appreciated. Phil

This can be done in two steps. Parallels itself (or whatever virtualizer you end up using) can be set to automatically start at login. This is an OS X feature for any program.
The second step is that Parallels lets you automatically boot into a virtual machine when you start Parallels.
Sounds like you would want to turn both the OS X and Parallels auto-start options on, so that OS X boots Parallels, and then Parallels boots Windows.

  • Client Cache requires ridiculous amount of disk space

I'm testing SCCM 2012 R2 with a Windows 7 client. I'm on my second application install and both apps gave me error that the cache was not large enough. The first time I increased it to 9GB and for the second app I increased it to 15GB. Both times I did it
    manually from the client machine.
If these apps are only 5MB in size why is the cache having to take up so much room? Also, is there a way to have the install automatically delete the cache if the install will be too big?

I've never had this type of issue, in all the years we've used ConfigMgr.
Assuming your installation of ConfigMgr is healthy, the first thing I'd look into, is if you may have inadvertently created the package for your 5Mb application by specifying the wrong source folder.
What I mean by that, is that sometimes, it's easy to inadvertently point the package source location at the wrong folder for source, if you point the source folder at, say, the root of a large software library (instead of the specific application folder), your
end up creating a package that is massive in size because it has all source for all applications in a single package.
(I've seen it done. It's not funny at the time, but afterwards, it gets a grin and office-myth status ;)
So, on a client, examine the ccmcache folders and content. if there's only supposed to be a single application install source in there, verify that.

  • I am told I need to be sure I have "over 1000" set on the "Amount of disc space to use" setting so I can download cytology slides for the final exam in a course I am taking. Can you tell me how to find this setting?

I am using a 5 year old MacBook Pro and Firefox version 7.0.1(2).dmg.
This is the 2nd time I have asked this question. I just added the Firefox version 7.0.1(2).dmg.

Go to the Help menu, select Excel Help. Search for cell formatting to find the help information.
Please, for further reference, Excel and Office are Microsoft products, so if you need help with them you should go to the Microsoft help forums - start at www.mactopia.com. These forums are for Apple products. Also, when you do post a question you should pick the most relevant forum in which to post. This question you posted in the iMac (PPC) forum. Clearly, you have an Intel Mac.

  • I have an iPod classic (160MB) and sync mostly audio books. The difficulty is that the audio books are taking up large amounts of disc space on my computer. Is it possible to just add new ones to the iPod and keep the deleted ones on the iPod?

The audio books I purchase are from Audible - I listen largely because my eyesight is going and I've been an avid reader. I'd like to keep the books on the iPod and not the computer to save space on the computer. Is this even possible?

Yes, though not advisable for content that you may not be able to redownload on demand. I'm not sure what Audible's policy, but with iTunes there is only one download.
You can either place the device in manually managed mode, in which case content you delete from the library won't be automatically removed from the device, or delete the files from Windows Explorer while keeping the entries for the same in the iTunes library. With the second approach iTunes will warn that it cannot find the files to sync (you can disable the warning) but it won't remove them, and you retain the advantage of being able to automatically sync other content.

  • My program on Solaris 9 uses huge amounts of swap space

    hi,
i have written a program that uses very little memory but seems to use huge amounts of swap space in increments of 1.4GB. The initial install of the Solaris 9 only allocated 500MB of swap for 4GB of Memory. The swap space has now been increased to 16GB but the program seems to use more swap space.
The program uses an api to attach to up to 100 agents and (the peice i wrote) registers a callback to handle events from the agents, a small amount of memory is allacated to hold details of each agent but no more.
Can anyone shed any light on this as this program does run on other platforms with any issues.
    sdarcy7

are you sure you are release memory, what language are you using?
you can reboot the system and follow the memory process using vmstat and swap -l, after that run your program only one time, and run the command again so the memory after should be the same that the initial before you run your process, if not , you program is collecting memory and is not releasing it.
    Good luck,
    JoshD

  • Files deleted, but still taking up disc space.

When I delete files from my ext HD or USB flash drive the files are no longer visible but they're still using the disc space. I deleted everything from my 1G flash drive this morning, it was full, to be able to put different files on it and when I started adding the files I got a message telling me that there was no room left on the drive. The info bar at the bottom of the window even showed that there was only a small amount of disc space left, but there were no files to be found. I'm still in the process of the PC to Mac switch so I still have my old PC and use it from time to time. In order to completely delete these files I have to plug it in to the PC and delete them there. Only then is the drive actually empty. The same thing happens with external HD. Will I have to continue to be tied to my PC because if this or can this be fixed.
    Thanks for any help.
    Chris

Hi Matt, I haven't tried that with the flash drive yet but I did with the ext HD a couple of weeks ago and it wouldn't let me because it said the the files were locked, I even tried the "sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/*" command in the terminal and it still wouldn't allow me to empty the trash, I didn't have the proper authority or something like that. That's when I discovered that once I ejected the HD the trash was suddenly empty. I plugged it in to the PC and emptied the "Trashes" folder, and back to the Mac and they were gone. Could it have something to do with the fact that these files, mostly music files but some PDFs and Word files, are coming from a PC, even though they're all Mac compatible?

  • LOST DISC SPACE...

I've been making movies (transferred from old home movies on VHS-C video tape) in iMovie, and then burning them in iDVD. After I'm finished burning the discs for each movie, I delete the movie files which default to my 'movies' folder, in order to regain disc space. But I've noticed that I'm still losing a significant amount of disc space. I began with 42 GB of available space, created three 20GB movies, (deleting each one after it's respective burn) and I've noticed that now I'm down to 34GB (instead of 42GB) available disc space, even though I've deleted the movie files. Is there some other place that date is being stored/saved/archived and robbing me of disc space?
    Thanks in advance,
    Donagh

As you have found: The default location for movies is the Movies directory. The default location for iDVD project files is the Documents directory.
I have no idea how they got there
When you created and saved an iDVD project, it was saved in the Documents directory (unless you selected someplace else).

  • How do I install updated Flash drive? It seems to require OSX 12.

How do I install the latest version of Adobe Flash Drive ??  It seems to require a12.1 version and I have a 10.68.  How do I expand to a 12.1 ??

First, you have posted in a PPC forum, but your profile shows you have Snow Leopard installed. That requires an Intel Mac.
If you have a PPC then you cannot upgrade Adobe Flash from where you are. If you have an Intel Mac you will have to upgrade to Adobe Flash Player 12.0.0.77.

  • After installing update, I get a box prompting me to install "solutioncenter" and requiring a disc I

After installing Flash Player update, I get a box prompting me to install "SoutionCenter" and requiring a disc I don't have.  The box appears whenever I start up my computer.  How do I get rid of this?

    SolutionCenter isn't an Adobe app.
Most likely it was (or still partly is) installed, and it uses Flash Player, but it's trying to update.

  • Disc Space error on Photoshop CS6 Extended install

I am attempting to install Photoshop CS6 Extended (win version) on my Windows 7 ( 64 bit) machine. Core 2 duo CPU @3.16gh with 8 gb or ram.
The machine meets all the minimum requirements and has more than enough disc space.
This is the error I get during initial extraction. "A problem occured while extracting some files. Check available space on your computer and write privileges on the destination folder. "I am the admin, the folder has permissions set correctly.
Also, I tried to read the "installation instructions" found in the CD and am unable to read the file as it says it is corrupted. Anyone else running into this issue?

if that's a problem with your cd, download a trial of ps cs6 and install/activate using your serial number:
if you follow all 7 steps you can dl a trial here:  http://prodesigntools.com/adobe-cs6-direct-download-links.html
    and activate with your serial.
if you have a problem dl'g, you didn't follow all 7 steps.

  • Windows 8 Pro (OEM Activation required) operating system recovery disc

We bought a Thinkcentre M72Z PC with a windows 7 downgrade.  The PC came with the Windows 8 Pro (OEM Activation required) operating system recovery disc but I cannot load Windows 8 from it.  Does anyone know what steps I have to take to use this disc?  It says the media is provided for recovery purposes, but it is not like an install disc.

First, the discs that you have do not include Windows, so you are stopped right there. What you had in mind might have worked, but the first thumbdrive has to be made bootable before copying the files on the disc to the thumbdrive.
Have you tried going into Windows and change the language it uses? I am not sure if installing the language pack is all you need to do. I believe it will only get you part way.

  • "Your application install seems to be damaged, Please reinstall the application."

So I have been trying to contact chat support for the past hour and no answer. I spoke to them earlier about my Creative Cloud app having froze and they talked me through how to solve this issue. However, now when I try to open any of my downloaded apps such as Photoshop or InDesign, it gives me these messages:
"Your application install seems to be damaged, Please reinstall the application."
"Adobe Application Manager, required to run your product, is missing or damaged.
Please download a new copy of Adobe Application Manager from
    http://www.adobe.com/go/applicationmanager_uk."
I have tried re-installing all the apps & downloading a new copy of adobe application manager, but still there's no change. I currently am working with an OS X 10.9.5
    Thanks!

    Natacha,
The error message  "Adobe creative cloud is needed to resolve this problem. However, it is missing or damaged. Please download and install a new copy of the Creative Cloud from http://www.adobe.com/go/adobecreativecloudapp" means that the installation of the Creative Cloud Application was not successful. I would recommend uninstalling the application, manually removing the folders mentioned below and trying  the installation procedure again.
    WINDOWS ::  C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\OOBE & C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\AdobeApplicationManager .
    MAC : /Library/ApplicationSupport/Adobe/OOBE & /Library/ApplicationSupport/Adobe/AdobeApplicationManager.
Please let us know if this works for you.

  • Magic Movie - how much disc space is required

I have an hour tape of holiday movies which I shall edit some time soon. Having just installed iMovie HD and read the new features I thought I might try a quick and dirty burn of the tape so I can at least see what I recorded without using the camera and TV as DVD-Rs are now so cheap.
How much free disc space is required for this. Were I to edit and burn I would expect about 18 Gb for the clips and another 18-20 for the burn. Will I need nearly 40GB for a Magic Movie?

    David,
You need to leave alot of space . How much? Well it's better posted in iDVD forum but I think your calculations are right. I hope you have an extrnl drive. It makes these things much "easier"- at least from a space point of view.
You may gain some space by sending your finished movie back to tape , delete the project to get back space, & reimport from tape ,then burn.
Easier way-get a standalone DVD burner with DVDRW+. Then youu can erase & re-use. Quick & dirty in real time!
