Install skipped packages w/o internet connection

Hi
I've installed a fresh Arch Linux (2010.05) on my machine and it uses a relatively wrong driver (Realetk 8169 instead of 8168; Realtek site provides separate drivers for these NICs).
Now I want to install the correct driver (8168), but when trying to build from sources, I get:
make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.33-ARCH/build: No such file or directory. Stop.
The "readme" of the drivers source says:
>>  <Requirements>
>>     - Kernel source tree (supported Linux kernel 2.6.x and 2.4.x)
>>     - For linux kernel 2.4.x, this driver supports 2.4.20 and latter.
>>     - Compiler/binutils for kernel compilation
As I know, "Compiler/binutils for kernel compilation" are there, but "Kernel source tree" probably is missing because I didn't check it when installing.
My questions are:
1) how can I find out if I have this "Kernel source tree" installed?
2) if it is missing, how can I install it having the Arch Linux CD and no internet connection? (basically it means: how can I install anything from the packages located on the "install CD"?)

My advice would be to start with another distro, as Arch is (imho) as good as you are.
I mean :
— If you're skilled at cli and know your way around a gnu/linux, then arch might suit you. (Arch is a 'good' distro)
— If you're a novice, then Arch won't suit you. (Arch suxx)
I took me several month to be able to enjoy an Arch install. I had to learn 'things' with others distros first.
fair enough. just thought id learn on the way, but apparently thats not the way it works! lol thanks

I was trying to update my garageband app and once the app fully downloads it says that it could not install and to check my internet connection. I restarted my internet, turned it off and on, restarted my computer, deleted the app and downloaded it again and the same thing happened every time. What should I do?

Do you have any firewalls or antivirus software active (e.g. Little Snitch), that could prevent the installer from contacting the Apple Servers? If yes, turn them off.  Also, disable the Energy saver, to prevent the Mac from falling asleep and causing time outs.
Sometimes it will help, to run the installer in Safe Mode, see:  Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?

  • Install firmware update without simultaneous internet connection

I use a USB modem for internet service.  Airport Utility want both air port connectivity and internet connectivity.  I therefore can't install the update.  Is there a way around this ?

Unfortunately the only way is to be connected to the internet. If you are near an  store you can take it in, I'm sure they will be happy to update it for you.

  • Installing Arch on PC without Internet Connection/Slow Connection

Arch Linux requires a fairly good internet connection to set up. How can one install it on machines which don't have any internet connectivity? Is there any way to make a DVD of Arch on a computer connected to internet and having Arch setup(DE,Media Players,Codecs etc) which can then be used on machines without internet connections This would come useful for me to install at my friends place. Does anyone even has a remote solution on this?

You could also install on a computer with a connection, then use something like Clonezilla to deploy it.

  • Instaling second ethernet card / sharing internet connection

    Hiya.
Is it possible to share my cable broadband service ( PS3 etc ) through my PPC G4, maybe by installing a second ethernet pci card and sharing the internal ethernet, or is there any other possibilities. no airport, but do have a D-link bluetooth dongle...

As other posters have pointed out, you don't need a second ethernet card to share out your connection - if you have an existing router (with a number of ethernet connections), you can connect your game consoles to that, and your ISP will be none the wiser. Your ISP will still give you one IP address; your router does the translation into multiple private IP addresses (eg 10.0.1.1, 10.0.1.2, etc)
Another option is to buy an inexpensive network switch, put that between the router and the Mac, connect the other devices to the switch, and turn on sharing from ethernet to ethernet. But you really don't need to with a router on the network.
If you share out your Mac's internet connection, the devices behind the connection will get IP addresses in the range 192.168.2.x (the Mac will effectively be their router/DHCP server at 192.168.2.1).

  • Installing Sprint Broadband High Speed Internet Connection

I am getting 11bps internet connection with my dial-up server, AOL.
Sprint has sent me the materials that are, for a huge price of $69 a month, supposed to give me broadband speed which I simply must have in order to attend online art classes which I am beginning next week.
Does it make any difference if I insert the disk before the laptop is turned on, or if I insert it while the laptop is already turned on?
I am totally scared to death to do this. I'm afraid something will go awry and I will screw things up. Any one here who has been through this? And knows the possible pitfalls? And can guide me through it?
I've read the printed instructions through 3 times and they are NO help. They are not clear or informative, so that I feel sure and secure of what to do and what to do next. I am floundering....and the clock is ticking! Help!
    Cyan

    Hi Cyan,
No worries either way on the disk, but no benefit of having it in first... you must still be a little bit stuck in the Windows® universe!
There'll be an installer once you open the CD, but it won't boot your Mac like some PC stuff does.
In fact, I think you/we can set it up without their CD even.
Seriously, don't worry yourself on this, it'll be easier than the documentation, and if that weren't enough, if I or others can't help you, I'll put out a Bat Signal for the best AOL helper in the whole world... Ali B., and help is but a parsec away.

  • After installing Lion, sharing my USB internet connection no longer works on my iPhone4.

I have a USB internet device and have been able to share that connection with my iPhone without problem, until installing Lion.  I searched the web, and someone suggested changing my encryption to 128, which I did.  For a few hours that worked, but now it's not giving me a decent connection.  Anyone know why and what the solution is?  Thanks.

I am having the same problem.  It worked fine (connecting my iOS devices to my macbook pro using internet sharing) until Lion.  Then it all went to ****.

  • No internet connection after installing yosemite

After installing Yosemite, I have no internet connection. If I hold option key, my wifi description shows Internet as unreachable, although all my bars are dark and the rest of the settings  look the same. When I connected via cable, it did not show an Ethernet connection. My pc and iPad work fine,so it isn't my carrier.  Anyone else have this problem and know a fix???  Thanks so much for any assistance..

You are on to something here.
I tried unloading, and it was not found.  I then loaded the file, and magically all my apple apps made their network connections and started working.
But here's where it gets funny.
I logged off, and into another use account and I had no network connection.
I logged back into my account, and had no network connection.  I needed to unload and load the file again for the network to return.
    More troubleshooting ahead...

  • CS3 Re-install on New Windows 7 Upgrade at Restart stops Internet connection

I upgraded to Windows 7 from XP (reformated disk/HP computer). I re-install MS Office, Quicken & other software and my internet connection works fine. On re-installing CS3 Web Premium, I maintain the ability to connect to internet up to the FINISH/FINISH & RESTART screen. With a restart, I loose the ability to see the internet. If I un-install CS3 and restart, my internet connection is restored. If I install all but Photoshop, Dreamworks, Illustrator, or Fireworks, I can goe cleare through the RESTART and still have my internet connection. If I install any of the four, I still have internet connection up to the  FINISH/FINISH & RESTART screen. At restart I loose my internet connection. Customer Service/Tech Support has no solution. Something must happen in the installation program at restart to reset some settings pointion to the internet but I known not what. Any ideas?

  • If I download Mountain Lion on my MBP , can I use the same installer file on a different computer and continue the installation without Internet connectivity?

    Hi Folks,
I have just downloaded Mountain lion on my  Macbook Pro(haven't installed it yet) . My question is, can I copy the same downloaded Mountain Lion from the Applications on to an external hard drive and use the same on a different computer? I am having problems with internet connectivity right now, it would be amazing if it can be installed on the iMac without internet connection.
    So is that doable?
    Thanks in advance

And the 2nd installation would not require internet connectivity? Except , of course during the set up and the configuration of iCloud and location based services, which I can skip at the time

  • Long loading time if no internet connection available (VS 2005 Redist)

    Hallo forum members!
I've been searching for a solution for my problem for a while - without success. It isn't really a critical issue, but quite annoying anyways.
Here's the problem i'm dealing with: I've developed an .NET application using Visual Studio 2005 and the included Crystal Report classes. When deploying my module everything works  as expected, offering a decent performance when loading the Crystal Report assemblies provided by the redistributable package - if an internet connection is available. If the system doesn't offer such a connection (e.g. not properly configured proxy settings) the module takes a huge amount of time to be loaded. An examination (using ProcMon) leaded to the conclusion that the Crystal Report assemblies try to retrieve the system connection settings from the registry in order to establish a connection to the internet. This is done only once when loading for the first time.
Has anyone experienced the same problem? What is this connection used for? Is there a way to suppress this behaviour on systems without a valid internet connection in order to avoid this annoying long loading time?
Thanks on advance for your help.
    Greetings,
    L.F.

Nothing like a good vacation. And I got your christmas present early :). While you were away we (actually one other customer) figured it out. I have written a note re. the resolution that was supposed to be published yesterday, but it's still not out there, so here it is as I submitted it:
    Symptom
When a report is loaded is takes between 150 - 180 seconds to display
This is only reproducible on computers with no internet connection
There are no error messages and the report comes up eventually
    Reproducing the Issue
Create a Windows application with the following function calls:
              new Report()
             report.SetDataSource(dataSet)
The function SetDataSource takes 2 plus minutes to execute
    Cause
On SetDataSource() an attempt is made to connect to crl.verisign.com
SetDataSource() uses the framework and as per the Microsoft Knowledge Base specified under "Resolution", it is actually the framework that is attempting the connection
    Resolution
Solution is described in this Microsoft Knowlege Base:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936707
The following Microsoft article also discusses the issue:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb629393.aspx
An alternative workaround to the above is as follows:
Open IE and go to the Tools menu and select Internet Options...
    Go to the Advanced tab
    Find the Security heading
Under the Security heading find "Check for publisher's certificate revocation"
    Uncheck this option
    Keywords
long time load crl.verisign.com certificate revoked internet
The note will be published here:
    https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/businessobjects-notes
and the number will be 1270414

  • Installing Reader 8.1.2 without an internet connection

Hi, my personal computer in my room isn't hooked up to my internet connection, so I copied the Adobe Reader file onto a flash drive and copied the file to the other computer. When I try to install it, the installation closes after the initial 0-100% progress bar and tells me that I basically need an internet connection so the program can update.
Is there any way around this? I've uninstalled the old Adobe Reader, and can't install the new one, so I'm Readerless. And since the error message comes out in a different language, I can't quote it exactly here.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you seen the wiki, in the facts you'll get the Arch iso unsquashed and copied into your partition. Maybe later you will need to connect to INTERNET to complete from the minimal installation.
From USB you may obtain a complete set of packages upto the result you want. That's means you install everything of your liking on the USB, then later you'll be able to clone into the partition. Note that host computer may not reflect the same destination hardware, so you just use open source video drivers.
You just keep the pacman cache safe and use it to install into you partition. To avoid download you should use the very same package list. See here
