Install Windows 7 in a Virtual Box VM using recovery disks?

I have a new satellite A665-S5170, and I was thinking of installing Ubuntu Linux as the native OS, and then installing Windows 7 in a Virtual Box VM. Will the recovery disks work to install in VM, or are they propietary enough to only with with the real hardware?
Thanks
Bob

Last time I did a system recoery in VMWare, I had to modify the recovery.bat file on the cdrom to skip the system check, as the virtual BIOS and hardware are completely different from the physical machine.
In my situation a recovery was failing at the same point every time it ran on a machine so I was verifying that the new media a customer bought would complete the recovery process.  Turns out there was a penny stuck in the optical drive.

  • Enabling Virtualization Technology to Install Windows 8 on Virtual Machine?

Hello…I have an HP HPE-310t Desktop computer that is currently running the 32-bit version of Windows 7.
I'm interested in installing the Windows 8 Customer Preview on a virtual machine such as Virtual Box.  I've done a little bit of research on how to do this, but there is one thing I am unclear about, and so I'm requesting assistance here.
The documentation I've read states my processor must support Virtualization Technology.  The processor is a quad-core, so I'm assuming it does.  However, the documentation also says Virtualization Technology is often disabled by default, and may need to be enabled to use it.
I'm not sure how to do this.  I'm assuming it has to be done in BIOS.  Can anyone please tell me where to find the option to enable Virtualization Technology, or check to see if is already enabled?
Thank you for your assistance.  J. Danniel

Hello, and thank you for replying.
I actually found the Virtualization Technology option in BIOS and enabled it.  I had no trouble installing Windows 8 on Virtual Box.
However, while I'm sitting here typing this, I should say something:  I did install Windows 8 Customer Preview on my computer when it first came out.   (I did a full system backup with Acronis True Image prior to the installation.)
Anyway, the installation went smoothly, and I installed a dozen or so programs on it with no problems.  When I installed a Thunderbird E-Mail backup program, I rebooted, and my computer froze at the HP Welcome/BIOS sign-on screen.
It just stayed there.  I shut the computer off for a minute or two, restarted it, and it froze again.  I began to feel a touch of panic.  I shut the computer off yet again, waited 15 minutes, and restarted it using the Acronis True Image boot CD.   Fortunately, it booted up, so I restored my backup.
For the brief period of time I used Windows 8 on my actual system and not in Virtual Box, my reaction was highly negative.   I was VERY impressed with the revised Explorer--they finally got that right.  I actually LIKE the ribbon in it!
But Metro?  The elimination of a Start button?  It's hell on earth to use a keyboard and mouse to get to a Shut Down, Log Off, or Restart option.
I can't envision a scenario where I would upgrade my computer to Windows 8.  Messing with it once in a while in Virtual Box...yeah, I'll do that.  I can nuke the whole thing without much chaos.
    Thanks again!   Jd

  • How to install windows 7 on Imac late 2009 using Vmware/Vbox

Hey guys. Here's the thing. I've installed Windows 8 on my imac late 2009 but then i realized that there's no bootcamp drivers for it (check image).
everything works fine except for the video drivers that crash everytime when i install any driver (bootcamp or manually).
So I've searched on many forums n i found a guy that could do that by using Vmware/Virtualbox by accessing the full disk n installing it from there.
    Here's what we wrote -> (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1526883)
"Thanks for the suggestions, but installing from usb wasn't working, and refit didn't recognise the external dvd drive too (it was in the list, but when i tried to load it i got an error).
But i found a solution, not usual procedure but still good and easy to do.
I installed virtualbox, created a virtual machine with the full disk access (you'll have to unmount all the partitions first and run virtualbox as root), started installing windows, when the copy of the files ended and the vm was rebooting i simply closed it and rebooted my imac and finished the installation directly on the imac, everything went well...
    Thanks again for the help"
    Important notes :
    - My superdrive is broken
    - I can't boot efi windows 7 (cause it needs efi 2.0)
    So i might ask u 2 things..
1- Is there a way that i can install all those drivers on windows 8.
2- Can u describe how he did that with Vmware/Virtualbox?

I can't. Just like i said. My superdrive is broken so the only way is to boot from usb but my imac's efi firmware is 1.0 and to boot a windows 7 efi you must have at least efi firmware 2.0. I managed to install windows 8 cause it needed efi firmware 1.0 that's why.

  • Can't install Windows 8.1 because the Bootcamp Assistant-partitioned disk is GBT and not MBR.

I can’t install Windows 8.1 because the Bootcamp Assistant-partitioned disk is GBT and not MBR, and attempting to format the bootcamp disk does nothing. I have read up on this issue, and the only solution seems to be to make a backup of my computer and reformat all disks via 8.1 setup terminal. I REALLY do not want to do that, is there any way to fix this? I’m on OS X Yosemite, if that pertains to the thread.

Interesting. It wouldn’t install because I had FileVault enabled. Huh. Disabling it saved the day.

  • Problem Using Recovery Disks!

    Hi,
    I have a Hp Pavilion m6-1045dx machine.
It came with windows 7 pre installed.
the first thing i did was to create the set of recovery disks, so it created a set of 5 dvds recovery disks.
the system was going good. I cleaned out my harddrive and installed windows 8 in it.
now i installed win 7 again, recovery partition is still in the harddrive but it is not working now. I tried to recover using the recovery manager inside the base.wim file after extracting it but it says that i have already created a set to recovery disks, i should use them to recover the system. When i use recovery disks, it gives an error that the set of recovery disks cannot be used on this system.
    How can i recover now?
    Please help.
    Regards...

Hello Sarmad_Khan. I understand you are unable to utilize your recovery disks, due to the multiple changes that have occurred. Before any advanced troubleshooting is attempted, I would like you to download and utilize the patch: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=pv-80183-1&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en
Installing this patch should resolve the issue. Otherwise, please attempt the troubleshooting in this HP document: h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c01868346
If the issue is not resolved, there is a more complicated alternative solution. If you have access to your original product key, you can create an ISO file as a potential resolution, assuming you have access to program that can burn ISO files (you can download software online for this task). Utilizing the link below, click on the relevant software and download it, then select a language, and type the product key (25 digits) to activate the installation: http://www.mydigitallife.info/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-from-digital-river/
Please respond when you complete the troubleshooting. If the issue is not resolved, you should contact HP technical support for further assistance.
Their options will be based on the warranty status of the computer. If you do not have this information, you can locate it at this website: http://h20566.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/public/wc/home?ac.admitted=1384280905804.876444892.199480...

  • Portege R500-11Z: Using Recovery Disk to prepare a new HDD

I have bought a new hard drive (SSD) for my R500-11Z and I have put it in an enclosure with USB cable prior to installation - I want to be able to format the drive and create a clean copy of Windows XP before taking out my existing hard drive.
I have been looking for ways to use the recovery disk and it LOOKS like it should be possible... EXCEPT...
I have worked out that on the recovery disk there is a executable called recoUNPACK in the Tools folder, which should in theory restore the contents of the disk to the hard drive. However, because the new hard drive is plugged into my existing XP set up it gets a folder called System Volume Information written to it. The presence of this folder causes the recoUNPACK to fail. It gets to 59% each time and then throws the error - System Volume Information already exists.
Anyone suggesting deletion of the folder should consider their knowledge of XP - there is no way to do this, ask Mr Google if you don't believe me. I have also tried this with full write permissions of this folder so that, in theory, recoUNPACK could overwrite...
I would be very grateful if anyone knows a way of 'forcing' overwrite of the System Volume Inofrmation folder or another way of 'restoring' the recovery disk to my new hard drive (other than taking the laptop apart and physically replacing the drive!).
I have looked at various options for setting up a bootable USB disk, but as I'm going to fit it within my laptop I don't want to run any odd versions of XP - hence using the recovery disk that came with my R500. All the bootable USB programmes that I can find only allow fat32 format, and I'd like to stick to NTFS...
And the reason I want to do it this way is that I want to continue using my existing hard disk until the new one is ready - its supposed to be an efficient way of working... but so far the time wasted trying to restore the disks might have been better spent undoing the screws on the back of the machine!
    Thanks in advance

    > My question is about how to use recoUNPACK.exe via USB external drive, not how to set up a new ssd within my r500.
Im not expert in recoUNPACK.exe. I dont use it simply because there are other, easier ways to backup and restore the system.
    > - its not just operating system, its the other software that I need to load and update.
Sorry but I cannot follow you now... the Toshiba image contains the Windows system, Toshiba drivers and tools.
But it does NOT contain the 3rd party software you have preinstalled on the notebook.
So even you would be able to unpack the Toshiba image on the external SSD drive, you would need to install all the 3rd party software / tools which are already available on your HDD. This would definitely NOT decrease your down-time.
In my opinion if you want to decrease your down-time, I recommend creating an image backup of your partition using the Windows 7 tool backup and restore
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/features/backup-and-restore
This backup could be saved somewhere on an external medium.
After a short system installation (using recovery disk) on new SSD drive, use the restore option to get the same system status back.

  • Do I need to re-install windows after I deleted Paralells to use VB?

Does anyone know the answer to this?
I deleted Parallels from from mac book pro a few months ago using the app delete program. I now want to install Suns Virtual Box on my mac and wondering to I need to re-install windows or is it still somewhere on my mac?
    Thanks guys for the help...

    Hi,
look inside your /User/Library/Parallels folder if the .hdd file that is your Parallels Windows VM is still present.
To my knowledge the uninstall of Parallels does not delete it.
Whether or not VirtualBox can use is for import is beyond my knowledge.
