  • I have Mountain Lion OS Install CD downloaded onto my external hard drive, how do I use this to upgrade from Leopard

Current computer that I just bought used is operating on Leopard 10.5.8
I have Mountain Lion OS X CD installation files downloaded on my external hard drive from another Mac that I have owned.
How do I use my external HD to download and Install Mountain OS X wizard.
Is the only way to do this to buy a copy of snow leopard and then once upgrading to that, plug in my external HD and then access the Mtn install file as I would if I had the installation CD?
When I try to access the install file from my external HD, i get to the installation window and then when I am to select a hard drive to install it on I receuve a red exclamation mark error that says it can not be written to the HD. Why is this? Because I'm not on snow leopard but rather leopard?

As you have the installer on a DVD, you can do a trick that consists in formatting the hard drive, and then, install Mountain Lion.
First, make a backup of your files with Time Machine > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427 I recommend Time Machine because it will be easier to restore your files later.
Then, insert the DVD with Mountain Lion and hold the C key while your Mac is starting, so you will see a window with different options. Open Disk Utility, choose Macintosh HD in the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the drive.
After erasing the drive, you can install Mountain Lion. Close Disk Utility and install it. During the initial setup, it will ask you to restore your files, so plug the external drive with the backup and follow its steps. Note that PowerPC apps aren't compatible

I have itunes directory on an external hard drive and want to direct a new installation of itunes on windows 8 to use it. I tried holding down ctrl and clicking itunes and after many tries got it to work one time. When I went back in later it had reverted back to a blank version of itunes and I cant get ctrl to work again. Any other ideas?

This is sometimes caused by a problem with the iTunesPrefs.xml file, normally found at C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunesPrefs.xml. Try dragging this to the desktop and trying again.
Alternatively the problem may be that you have McAfee AV and it is preventing iTunes from updating the same file and thus causing the problem. See Why does iTunes delete my itunesprefs.xml? for details.

You cannot. From a legal standpoint, the license agreement for OS X mandates that you run OS X only on Apple hardware. HP is not (yet) owned by Apple.
From a technical standpoint, your HP laptop doesn't use EFI, but rather an early predecessor called a BIOS. Apple is the only vendor of consumer computer hardware that uses EFI; other vendors reserve EFI for use in servers.
Secondly, Apple's operating systems support a rather limited number of configurations of video hardware and mainboard chipsets directly since they need only support those systems that they manufacture. You cannot use Windows software or drivers on OS X, so prior to installation, you would need to write your own hardware drivers for your laptop, create an OS X drive image on a Mac, and then modify that image with your drivers before putting it in the HP.
It will be simpler (and legal), to simply purchase a used Mac. Apple's online store has refurbished MacBook Airs starting at $850 and Mac Minis for $700. If you go to e-bay or craigslist, you'll find used Macs for considerably less.

  • HT1553 DO I HAVE TO HAVE THE ORIGINAL INSTALLATION DISCS IF MY HARD DRIVE IS REPLACED BUT I MADE A BACK UP WITH TIME MACHINE TO AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE ?

I have an imac from late 2009 and received an email saying the seagate hard drive may fail and apple is going to replace it free of charge. I will back up using time machine to an external hard drive but do I absolutely have to have the original installation CD's or is there a way around this to restore the computer once they replace the hard drive??

Yes, you can partition your 2TB drive that way. In fact, I have an external hard drive with 3 partitions: one for a SuperDuper! clone of my Snow Leopard partition, one to clone my Lion partition, and one larger partition for Time Machine (which only backs up the Lion partition).
I would expect the authorized reseller to have a complete set of OS X disks.

Oh ok, well that was what the test said prior to reformatting the hard drive. Now, it doesn't find any trouble no matter how many times I run it. That's what has me so confused, everything seems to check out and yet...I can't do anything, not even install the software!

  • [SOLVED} Installation from USB Stick to USB External Hard Drive?

    SYMPTOMS
I'm trying to install Overlord from a USB flash drive to an external USB HDD. There seem to be no problems with the installation, but when I reboot, I get the following:
Root device ... doesn't exist, attempting to create it
ERROR: Failed to parse block device name
ERROR: Unable to create/detect root device
Googling, I found that a user has had the exact same problem I have had. In the sixth post, the user says that he tried installing Arch to an external hard drive and got the "Root device...doesn't exist" error.
    Unfortunately, his problem was unresolved.
Does anyone have experience successfully installing Archlinux to an external USB hard drive? (The hard drive itself is SATA). Are there are any hooks that I need to add? Modules that I need to load? Something else?
    SOLUTION
I asked a friend to help me install it. I believe the problem was with the GRUB menu.lst file.
Originally, the "root=..." pointed to the /dev/disk/by-uuid/ label for my root device. He changed that to /dev/sdb2. I don't recall editting any other file, so apparently, that was it. The weird thing is, I thought I did that, but I guess I either did not or I typed something incorrectly.
Anyway, my system is now up and running, and I'm very happy.

  • Installation and External Hard drives.

    Hello,
I'm a newbie. I have installed Logic 9 directly on my I Mac. I have decided to buy one or more external hard drives and start saving. Is it best to reinstall logic on an external hard drive? Should I have a one external hard drive dedicated to projects only, Samples only? Any suggestions on configuration.
    Thanks!!
    Dave

    Hi
Logic has to be on your boot drive (which can be external, but... no real reason to do that, except for certain internal drive fixing operations via disk utility software.)
A 7200 RPM (or faster) drive is the way to go for working your projects. You can store your sample files externally also, but you'll need to learn the tricks and tips for doing that. When the time comes you can learn all of that here.

  • CS4 installation on external hard drive

    Hi!
I do not have the requisite 9.3 GB of free space on my laptop to install CS4. Will Creative Suites work properly if I instead install the discs on my external hard drive?  If yes, is there any downside to doing this?

    Glad to help!
We purchase Lenovo computer from a serious company.
Lenovo has good parts and support systems.
if you go here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?doctypeind=2&template=%2Fproductsele ction%2Flandingpages%2FpartsInformationLandingPage.vm&sitestyle=lenovo
you can easily find the parts you need.
I will also suggest you to take a backup of your harddisk before replace new drive, because Lenovo has a few hidden partitions on the harddrive.
You can use Lenovo's rescue recovery for this.
If you dont have rescue recovery innstalled, you can get all the thinkVantage futures from Lenovo here:

  • Installation of OSX on External Hard Drive ..help!

    Hello all!
My MacBook hard drive is starting to fail, so i thought of installing all my OSX software onto my external hard drive, and boot everything from there (which I have read that is possible)..
Now by doing that, I came up with a couple of question, to which I could not find an answer..
    1. If I install OSX on the external HD, would I be able to update/upgrade OSX as normal?
    2. Ok, now in theory (and hoping this will never happen), let us say that my MacBook will fail completely at some point.. between the moment the MacBook fails, and the moment I buy a new one, could I boot OSX from a normal (non Mac) laptop? (I know this is not allowed by Apple regulations and all..but it would be a theoretical temporary measure to access my files until I get my new Mac)..
    Thank You for your answers!
    Regards
    N19

Just to second what Kappy has posted.
    1) Yes, you can upgrade OS X and run things as normal from that external drive.
    2) OS X will not boot any PC, in part because most PCs can't boot from an external drive and also because OS X cannot be installed on non-Apple hardware.

  • How do I restore all bookmarks from an external hard drive to a refreshed firefox?

I just "refreshed" Firefox and lost ALL of my passwords, even though the instructions said they would be saved. I have tried copying them from the Old Firefox Data folder and this does NOTHING. I have all of the data I need on an external hard drive and the ability to browse ( have already found my Firefox profile on the backup drive) and copy and paste data from that drive to my C drive. Please tell me EXACTLY how to transfer my bookmarks to the refreshed version of Firefox. I have YEARS of bookmarks that I CANNOT AFFORD TO LOSE. I will be more than happy to simply restore my old profile even though that will slow Firefox down. That would be a small price to pay, but I must have the bookmarks back. Please help!

These can't get your data back, but will help in the future.

FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your

In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild

It will also make backup of files that you choose.

  • External hard drive is not recognized after attempt to format

I just got a new macbook and couldn't use my external hard drive because it was formatted on a PC and only allowed me to read the data. I backed up the data on the 250gb hd and then used Disk Utility to erase the hd and format it as "Mac OS extended (journaled)." After beginning, Disk Utility stopped working and showed up as "not responding" in the Activity Monitor.
Now the hd does not show up on the desktop and can only be seen in Disk Utility. If I try to erase again or partition the hd the utility stops responding. If I try to zero out the drive it continues to say "preparing to zero" indefinately. Now the hd is also not recognized by windows except in the windows disk utility, but it does not even give the option of formatting/initializing it, so that is not an option.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this before, or have any idea of something that I haven't tried yet. I really want to get the drive working and have exhausted all the ideas I can come up with. The internet has not provided too many ideas either.
Thanks so much for your help.
Black MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I have crazy solution to format it to FAT 32, it work a couple times on my several MAxtor, and Western Digital HD. But this is the last resort and if you are not handy and familiar, don't do it.
It happen on my external HD, so I crack the enclosure open, pulled the HD out and attached it as internal HD on a PC after adjusting the jumper to master and make sure no other HD attached to the motherboard. Make sure the motherboard detected (you can see it from bios menu).
Insert a bootable installer disk before XP ('98, ME, or 2000), and start from there until a promt comes, and type fdisk and you delete the old partition and create a new partition and restart once using the disk still and format it using FAT 32.
After that you put it back to the enclosure, and mount it to MacBook as a new HD with default factory format.
If you don't have the installer disk, this might help :
    http://www.bootdisk.com/
But if your maxtor still under warranty better talk to them first and they might willing to reformat it for you.
Hope this help your external back and let you use it on your MacBook.

  • External hard drive not visible in disk utility or finder

    Hi all,
I have had a good look through previous discussions and I can't seem to find an issue relevant to mine.
My external hard drive has 2 partitions (1 time machine back up, 1 general hard drive). The issue is that the HD is running when it is plugged in however it is not visible in either disk utility or finder.
I am running OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) on a 2010 MacBook Pro. I also have parallels desktop running windows 7. When I boot windows and plug in the HD I usually get the option to mount the HD to either OS X or Windows. With this issue the option window appears for a split second (not enough time to select either) and then disappears. It seems that the HD may be ejecting itself as soon as it is registered by the computer. I have tried using a different power cable for the HD and also a different usb cable, this doesn't help.
The external HD is a Samsung D3 Station, which i have had for 6 months now and never had an issue with.
    Any help is appreciated
    Thanks,
    Bruce

An update for anyone who can help me:
I have tried the external hard drive in other computers (mac and windows), each time I get the same problem above.
I have removed the HD from the enclosure and purchased a docking station for it (3.5" SATA). When I plug it in to the laptop it disconnects itself straight away before it is visible. With the windows computers it installs the drivers and says that the device is ready to use, then disconnects before it shows up.
As the HD is not visible there is no option to re-format or anything.
This is very frustrating as I was using the HD with no issues and it randomly disconnected and I have not been able to access since.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Bruce

  • I want to save important files/programs on an external hard drive, delete EVERYTHING on my computer, install snow leopard, and reload everything i saved on to a clean slate. Is this possible/practical?

I was just thinking that it would be better to wipe the entire hard drive clean and reinstall some programs rather than go through and move certain things to the trash. Basically rebuild my software and file collection from the ground up, omitting what is unnecessary. Then again, I have no idea what i'm doing.
My macbook was purchased in late 2008. 2gb RAM. OS X 10.5.6.  It's been going very slow lately so i decided i would look up how to improve. Snow leopard was recommended as well as changing my RAM. And so here I am.
I don't have an external hard drive so i was going to just compress all my files and save them to my emac via ethernet. would they be harmed?
also, i have alot of projects in ableton (a music recording/writing program). Would saving and transferring them be just as simple as finding the song? or are other components of a certain song saved in other locations?
sorry this is so lengthy. i should probably stick with something simple but i just want things to run as smoothly as possible for as long as possible
    thanks very much

Installing Snow Leopard: What you need to know
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1142454/install_snow_leopard.html.
You should get a Firewire connected hard drive and backup your MB's HD to it. That way, if something goes wrong during the installation, you can recover your current sytem, apps and files. After the SL install, you can use the external HD for frequent backups.
