Installed OCFS.... then GRUB freezes

Hi,
I am trying to add a node to our existing Oracle10g RAC environment.
New Node is a Dell Blade Server
OS: Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 3
Kernel is: 2.4.21-20.ELsmp
I installed the following rpm packages this morning:
ocfs-2.4.21-EL-smp-1.0.13-1.i686.rpm
ocfs-support-1.1.5-1.i386.rpm
ocfs-tools-1.0.10-1.i386.rpm
No problems there.
Then, I used ocfstool to create that config file.
No problem there.
Then I decided to reboot the server... and it hangs at GRUB....
I don't even get the list of kernels to pick from.. just hangs.
Has this happened to anyone before? Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

use the first redhat installation disk.
reinstall grub.
maybe grub is damaged

Ok will check, as of right now I have 82.57gb free, that's plenty of space will check the disk though using disk utility. Also I am now downloading the update from the apple website instead of going through software update

None of my addons or extentions work any more since installing 3.6.6. When I go Tools/Add-ons it just goes 'ding' [makes an error noise] when I click on any of the options and then firefox freezes up and I have to go to the task manager to shut firefox down.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened

Delete the files extensions.* (extensions.rdf, extensions.cache, extensions.ini) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox [[Profiles|profile folder]] to reset the extensions registry.
    See "Corrupt extension files": http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions
If you see disabled extensions that are not compatible on the next start in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the "Find Updates" button to do a compatibility check.

I can see my messages, but cannot create a new message or reply to any messages.
When I try nothing happens, then Mail freezes all together and usually crashes.
I was able to get into my Mail settings and everything looks ok as far as I can tell.
Has anyone else seen this? My software is completely up to date now (unfortunately).
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

    Do a backup.
    Quit Mail.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

  • How to properly clean install: erase, partition hard drive, and install tiger then SL

    Hello,
I am a noob at this, so if responders would be kind enough to be detailed / specific with any instructions it would be most helpful! I own a dinosaur apparently (even though I don't think so): the white (not unibody) Intel macbook2,1 (late 2006) 1.83 GHz with currently 1GB of RAM, but I have 2x2GB RAM sitting next to me ready for install. However, first I would like to do a clean uninstall of my computer (running OS X 10.6.8 SL). I also would like to properly partition my hard drive while I'm at it.
About 6 months ago I had serious crashing issues, along with kernel panics, hangs, applications randomly appearing & disappearing, system settings and options doing the same, fans running high (probably due to the low RAM available), and basically overall screwiness. So, after trying pretty much every option I could find on this community...and many others... (e.g. clean cache, clean old logs, already did a clean uninstall and install of SL, and much much more) I have reached my wits end. I would say that to date I've wasted a good solid 2 months with this.
The clean install worked for MAYBE a month or so, but then it started acting up again with the fans (even without high pages in/out, CPU or memory usage) and excessive heat, along with the apps freezing and quitting (mind you it would be only two things open such as 1 word document and then firefox-- with flash disabeled). SOOOOOO long story short, I have purchased new RAM and I would like to try this once again, but to ensure I don't screw it up this time I would like some directions as to how to do the uninstall, partition, then reinstall. (currently to date I ensured all updates are completed---even though they are no longer released for SL, and I just did a full backup).
Also, I need to first install Tiger (my original OS) as when I went to do a hardware test the other day this was not an option (and upon further research it is due to me not using Tiger as a first install and then using my mac box set for SL). I didn't use my original OS first because....one issue encountered when I had tried to install Tiger was that my Disc 2 (the applications one) took around 1.5 hrs to complete, but when I reached the last step of glory where I expected it to say COMPLETE it instead said that there was some sort of issue with the disc..........of course).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1: If near a Apple Store or Authorized Repair, take it to then for a free evaluation, it might have other hardware problems now that it would be a waste of effort even continuing.
2: The RAM needs to be
    Maximum Memory
3.0 GB (Actual) 2.0 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM
Basically what this means is you can put in a 2GB module and a 1GB module for 3GB total.
I wouldn't proceed with installing RAM just yet, not until you get a stable OS X version on the machine, you might have a hard drive needing to be replaced as well which you can do while inserting new RAM.
3: This User Tip can assist in installing 10.6 Snow Leopard, partition format etc.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
Software Update fully immediately after setup.
There is no need to install Tiger, he 10.6 disk contains the full 10.6 version, you can either install the iLife from Tiger disks or use Pacifist from Charlesoft to extract them and place on your new install, then Software update to get them current.
4: If not successful then the drive also likely needs to be replaced, if so choose a 7,200 RPM SATA I  w/1.5Gb/s connection.
Install/upgrade RAM or storage drive in Mac's
    Repeat #3
If your getting beeping noises or "you need to restart" issues, it's likely one or more of the RAM modules is bad. Have it exchanged or swapped.
I advise good quality RAM the first time, if you buy cheap stuff it's just going back.
Don't go any further than 10.6.8 with that old machine, the performance will be terrible.

How do i install grub now ?
L.E. : do not include the boot partition into LVM.
Last edited by psycho (2013-08-01 18:58:18)

Your first partition starts at block 63.  Grub has gotten so bloated that it now writes to not only the MBR, but also to the space from the MBR (after sector 0) to the start of the first partition, which these days is sector 2048.  This new start point is for alignment purposes.
You either need to recreate your first partition and let fdsik align it to sector 2048, or you need to create a grub bios boot partition (as though you were using GPT).
Honestly, although grub2 can handle this, I think putting /boot inside the LVM is a bad idea.  It just makes you totally reliant on grub2 with no other bootloader choice.  For example, if something in some poorly designed program decided to write some crap to the area between the MBR and the first partition (which applications have been known to do), and you had a USB flash drive with syslinux on it (which the Arch live media has), then you could not set it up to boot your disc.
I think you should use the pvremove command to take that first partition out temporarily, then create two new partitions.  One for /boot and one to add back.  But this is not going to be very straight forward since you already have four primary partitions.  It might be better to convert your partitions to GPT (which is super easy using gdisk) because then you are limited to only 128 primary partitions instead of a measly four.  If you do that though, then you will have to make three new partitions if you want to continue to use grub2.  You will additionally need the grub bios partition mentioned above.  The grub2 wiki page had more info on this.  But then you should make the /boot partition and then the partition to add back.
At the very least, you are going to have to remove the first partition so that it can be resized, and then add it back.  Hopefully, you have not already filled the LVM space, so that you can easily shift things around.

  • Help!! My iMac 24 screen is going bonkers, then system freezes...

I have been having a problem that is not application-specific, and not Lion specific. This only happens on my 2009 iMac 24 running Lion 10.7.4. (I also run Lion on my 2011 MBP and have not had this problem.) It doesn't matter whether I'm in iTunes, Safari, Logic, Pages... running applications alone or in combination. It doesn't happen right away. It's usually after I've been active on the computer for at least an hour. I will try to describe it the best way I can:
    1. I could be browsing Safari, for instance. I'll notice that a small section of my desktop starts "growing" red, green, and/or blue pixels. If left untouched, the pixels overtake about 70% of the display until the computer freezes. Now, if i click anywhere on my screen -- in Safari or on the desktop -- whatever the mouse is pointing at will redraw itself. Meanwhile, the screen starts blinking rapidly and basically, has a tantrumI can't Force Quit, Restart, Shut Down, or any other activity. The only solution is to power it down using the power switch.
    2. I'm working on music in Logic Pro. When I have Logic running, it usually spans the entire display. Within the Logic screen I'll see a small section of these red, green, and/or blue pixels. (Well by now, I know what's coming so I immediately save my work before the system freezes.) I quit out of Logic, but the pixels continue to take over my desktop. If left on it's own it starts going berserk as described above. Eventually the system freezes and I have to power down.
This started happening last month. Two things happend last month: (a) I switched my internet service and combined my internet connection with my land line. I had previously been using a dedicated line for internet. (b) My service agreement expired on the iMac... go figure!
If anyone else has experienced this and can offer some solution or workaround it would be greatly appreciated. This is scaring the heck out of me so I am now backing up my backup of my backup. I'm starting to wonder if this is actually Windows somehow cleverly disguised as a Mac.

Hi Gigi, not the problem but do this firstanyway...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitiion & use Disk Utility from there.
Then I'd get Lion Cache Cleaner & clear the caches...
    http://www.northernsoftworks.com/lioncachecleaner.html
Have you blown the dust out lately?
Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12381/temperature-monitor
    iStat Menus...
    http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/
    And/or iStat Pro...
    http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

Whenever i try to download OS X Mavericks, it will download to 995.6MB then will freeze and not download any further. I have tried restarting the download a couple of times and still nothing happens. Restarted computer and still nothing. I don't know what is happening or if it is a problem my side or on the apple side of things. I am running quite a powerful computer so i dont think it is the computer that is having problems either.
Help would be highly greatful. Thanks!

    Hi casturrr,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of what you are describing. If your whole system is hanging or freezing completely, and it is occuring during the download and not during the install portion, you may find the troublehsooting steps outlined in the following article helpful:

Please, I need help! Working on a MacPro 2.5 GHx, Intel Core 2 Duo, running snow leopard 10.6.7 --
Last week, Firefox asked me to upgrade, that’s when my troubles began -- Now when open Firefox, I get my default page, and then it freezes, disallows any page changes, the links die, no page scrolling --
The only unusual aspect to my previous Firefox configuration, was that I installed a NO SCRIPT thing to get past the New York Times paywall — and I don’t understand how to un-install that, assuming that’s the issue --
Have downloaded and re-installed Firefox, don’t think this has helped in any way, HELP please?!? Thanks, george.

That would at least partially explain it.
These MacBook Pros drew more power than the power brick could readily supply, and so would only run at top speed when the power brick was supplemented by the battery.
Though the applicable tech note has been removed, it stated:
"If the battery is removed from a MacBook or MacBook Pro, the computer will automatically reduce the processor speed. This prevents the computer from shutting down if it demands more power than the A/C adapter alone can provide."

  • InDesign CS4 install (new & upgrade) still freezes on new MacBook Pro.

    Have a stupid question:
WHY HAS ADOBE NOT FIXED THIS ISSUE.....RATHER THAH CONTINUING TO ASK THE CUSTOMERS TO FIX IT?
The company's customer base is boiling over with customers who've paid for and received a NONWORKING product.  A defective product. Period.  If this were a prescription drug or a car, the govt would have ordered recalls by now.
Adobe's labrynthine, convoluted recommended "fixes"  (delete and reinstall all your Adobe products....reinstall your system software .... go stand in the rain and burn incense to the gods .... whatever) is like Ford Motor telling the customer:  "Yes, we admit that make and model has a major defect.  But, hey, at least we feel bad about it. Try taking the car apart and rebuilding it. See if that works.)
    Eeegads.
For the record:  Only SOME of the people with the Install/Setup issue (installer freezes at about 90% while checking system profiler) have inadequate hardware. Most have adequate hardware.  So spare us this "the customer is stooopid" defense.  We're not stupid. We're angry.
I've read the bulletin boards. So has Adobe.  We all know Adobe produced a seriously flawed installer; they know it, too.  They know it because zillions of us of us  HAVE SPENT HOURS ON THE PHONE WITH ADOBE STAFF, WHO  CONFIRM THAT (A) OUR HARDWARE IS MORE THAN ADEQUATE AND (B) THEY HAVEN'T A CLUE TO DO.  Other tearing the computer apart and rebuilding it, I mean.
This is one of the largest software makers in the world.  They have enough programmers and engineers working in their corporate coffee shop to fix this thing.  (1)  produce a NEW installer that is not affected by whatever it is that is affecting the current one. (Am I genius or what?)
    (2) distribute a two-part installer that first scans and fixes the obstacle -- and THEN installs the Adobe product.
    (3) Hire a third-party vendor to figure this out for Adobe.
Adobe failure/refusal to do this -- more than eight months after being made  aware of the problem -- is not one of this company's finer moments.

First. I sense you're on the verge of a full blown rant. Keep in mind that this is a user to user forum so please stay calm. Ranting at us won't help you. For that please contact Adobe directly.
While there are certainly people having issues, measuring those issues in a support forum is like going to a body shop and declaring that all cars crash into something.
Most users don't have any issue at all but there are certainly too many to call it acceptable. That said, the first thing to do is run the CS4 clean script:

  • Boot partition corrupted on encrypted install, trouble repairing GRUB

Long story short, my boot partition got thoroughly messed up. I have an encrypted install with luks and dm-crypt. I have tried many guides for fixing grub and none are working.
Here is where I'm running into trouble:
I've booted an arch install cd, modprobe'd dm_crypt, mounted my encrypted root with cryptsetup, run arch-chroot, mounted the boot partition to /boot, run grub-install /dev/sda, and then grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
When running grub-mkconfig I get 12 instances of "WARNING: Failed to connect to lvmetad: No such file or directory. Falling back to internal scanning." followed by "done". Upon reboot I am met with the grub prompt.
    Any ideas?

OK. Well the wiki is usually more up to date and more accurate. However https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Chroot says it is OK to mount them after just simpler and safer to do so before.
I am not surprised grub is unhappy - it doesn't seem to have any entries at all in grub.cfg. I guess it doesn't even give you a menu? (I am not sure how it would make one.)
Did you remember to reinstall the linux package before generating grub.cfg? That's the only thing I can think right now would cause it to just find nothing at all. I've seen it generate entries which wouldn't work but it is acting as if there is nothing there whatsoever. What is the contents of /boot? (Not everything under /boot/grub. Just the top level.)
EDIT: I only asked what happened to /boot in case it suggested any deeper problem. "Corruption" could mean hardware failure, for example. Just wiping it is not that bad . Seen much worse lately, anyway. (You could have run it on / or /home, after all.)

  • [solved] /boot/grub/grub.cfg installed as /boot/grub/grub.cfg.pacnew

    Hello there,
With the latest update of grub-common I got the following message:
    ( 3/15) upgrading grub-common [################################################################] 100%
    warning: /boot/grub/grub.cfg installed as /boot/grub/grub.cfg.pacnew
However, should I reflect the changes of grub.cfg.pacnew or simply ignore it because grub.cfg is generated automatically?

Since automating it would make it virtually impossible to maintain a manually configured grub.cfg, I disagree. Arch does not do that stuff automatically. Even for those who do not hand edit the config file, it is likely to break things if people have more complex setups. (For example, in some cases, grub will not find an OS unless the partition is mounted and it might not be mounted.) Actually, not even Fedora does this automatically although I suspect that is considered a bug.
As for the warning, pacman does warn you. It tells you it has installed a *.pacnew file. That tells you two things: (1) you needed to customise the previous default config, and (2) the default config has changed. That copying the pacnew over your old config will break things is standard: blindly copying *any* pacnew over your old, customised file will break things. I agree that it breaks things in a bigger way in this case but the principle is exactly the same. That is not to say that I think a reminder would be out of place - other boot loaders'managers do post such messages. But being told about a pacnew or a pacsave file *is* notification from grub that user intervention is required and this is usually because somebody who knows the system and customisations made previously is required to adapt the changes to accommodate the update. i.e. it is usually because blindly overwriting stuff is very likely to break things.
    It is automated! WTF?!
Not really. One can hand edit grub.cfg and the package does not interfere with that.
This is what pacman threw out at me:
    warning: /etc/default/grub saved as /etc/default/grub.pacsave
    warning: /boot/grub/grub.cfg saved as /boot/grub/grub.cfg.pacsave
    ( 1/11) upgrading cgminer [#######################################] 100%
    ( 2/11) upgrading e2fsprogs [#######################################] 100%
    ( 3/11) installing grub [#######################################] 100%
    Copying /boot/grub/grub.cfg.pacsave to /boot/grub/grub.cfg
    Is this intended??
It, thankfully, didn't break anything but this isn't what should have happened. I am sure it will ruin someone's day.
I agree this is strange. I have no idea why it moves your old config to a .pacsave and then copies that .pacsave back to grub.cfg. Effectively what it does is just make a copy of your config as .pacsave but I don't know why it does that.
It is in fact quite unlikely to break anything since it is very likely that an existing grub.cfg will work with the new version of grub. Obviously people should check but if somebody doesn't it is not likely to do any harm. I am not sure what you did to break your configuration but I doubt that you copied grub.cfg.pacsave to grub.cfg.

  • Fan gets noisy then macbook freezes

My Macbook Pro, purchased in 2010, has recently begun freezing up a lot.  I've noticed that first the fan gets very noisy, then the macbook freezes. Often when I restart, the wireless says "no hardware detected" and I have to keep restarting until the wifi is finally detected again. Sometimes it can go several hours before freezing, sometimes it can go only two minutes. I couldn't remember anything I installed in that time, except a firefox extension (Zotero) that I uninstalled.
I'm running Os X lion, installed about three months ago.  Other spects: 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo w/ 4 gb RAM. This computer has been working fine for over a year until two days ago.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I repaired disk permissions then went to bed. This morning, the computer froze again after about half an hour of use. Some thing: fan starts whirring, then computer freezes.
    Any other suggestions?

Then I have tried it many times guess what happend? Same, same, same! Now I'm trying to restore from another computer. but megnificant itunes is not allowing to only restore it says also you need to UPDATE it!  And it says 2 hours left to update! WHY YOU ARE PUSHING US TO UPDATE WHILE IT'S NOT WORKING???
Maybe someone can help us to fix that kind of problems but your busy workers (coders/software devolopers) are very busy to put a support form in to the web site, maybe it's becouse of your budget is not allowing to make AFTER SALE SERVICES with some support people.
If it will not be restore after that update, if it will give Error code 14 again what should i do?

This is a Microsoft Windows Issue.
    From a MS Support Engineer:
    "Hi,
    ·        Is the computer on a domain?
    ·        Is the issue isolated to only this software or you get the same error message with other software’s as well?
Try the steps below and check if it helps.
    Step 1:
Run the software setup file as an administrator and check if it helps.
    a. Right click on the setup file of the software that you are trying to install.
    b. Select “Run as administrator”.
    Step 2:
Temporarily disable the antivirus software running on the computer and check if you are able to install the software.
    Disable antivirus software
    Warning:
Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.
    Step 3:
    a. Click Start, type "Local Security Policy" (without quotes) and press enter.
    b. Click on Software Restriction Policies.
    c. In the right pane, double click on the "enforcement".
    d. Select “All users except local administrators”.
    e. Click Ok and restart the computer and check if the issue is fixed."
