Installing itunes on new computer

My desktop crashed and I've downloaded itunes on the laptop and it won't recognize my ipod. My son says you can only have the ipod synched with one computer, is that true? How am I supposed to use itunes now? Makes no sense to me.....

You son is halfway right - you can only auto sync an ipod to one PC. That's how most folks use their ipods, I think.
Does the ipod show up in Windows Explorer?

    Hello jgrn76,
It sounds like you are getting an error stating that the iTunes installer cannot be run on your computer. I would try downloading the 64 bit version of iTunes from here:
    iTunes 11.1.3 for Windows (64-bit)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1615
If issues persist when trying to install it, I would try running through the steps in the article named:
Issues installing iTunes or QuickTime for Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1926
Otherwise, would you mind elaborating a bit on what the error message says, word for word?
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Upgrading computer, do I install itunes on new computer? How does my content on old computer get to my new computer?

I am upgrading to a new HP ProBook 6470b computer w/ Windows 7, do I install itunes on new computer or somehow transfer the files from the old Dell D620 Windows XP computer ? How does my content on old computer get to my new computer? Would like to find the best way to do this. Thanks!

Yes.  You should copy everything ( music, apps, pcis, docs, contacts, calendars, etc) from your old computer to your new one.
You can type "move itunes library" into the google search bar for instructions on itunes.
Certainly your computers have a methed for moving all of your content from one comptuer to another.

  • HT1751 Just installed itunes on my new computer.  My music is on an external drive.  How do i get newly installed itunes on new computer to recognize the music on the external drive?

I just got a new PC, thank goodness.  All my music is on an external drive (F).  i installed Itunes on my new computer.  Now want to get itunes to recognize all the music on my external drive.  Don't want to put music on new computer, but keep on external drive.  Can anyone help me - thanks

Was the media solely on the external library?  If so, it is likely that iTunes was started at some point with the external drive unaccessible.  Simply point iTunes to the correct library location.  To do this, close iTunes.  Hold <SHIFT> and launch iTunes.  When prompted to find library or create a new one, select the find option and point iTunes to where the iTuneslibrary.itl file is at on your computer (or external drive).

  • Installed Itunes on new computer now I cant synch

    Ok -
So I got a new computer and installed Itunes on it. I hooked up my existing ipod and I get a message saying my ipod is synced to another I tunes library. It says it can only be synced to one library at at time. I don't have the old computer anymore. How can I sync my ipod to the new itunes without deleting everything and starting over? There are thousands of songs on my ipod and I dont want to start over. Am i doomed? Help please.

OMG... DONT LISTEN TO THAT OTHER PERSON...i had the same problem...when your ipod connects, open it as a drive(it asks "how do you want to open this? type of question) , and drag and drop anything that looks like files...and did you look to the right when it connected? it says "transfer purchases" most people think, "cancel" but i looked, and i didnt have many "purchases" but it sync'd anyways...not everything like pictures, but my movies transferred over, and most of my songs...once itunes opens, under files, it has an option to "add file to library" or other options...try 'em all to save your stuff!!!!
im not a computer head, i just thought it would help you like it helped me...

  • Installed iTunes into New Computer and it doesnt function

hey I was wondering if anyone could help me:
I recently purchased a new computer and when I installed iTunes+Quicktime onto the computer, the program doesn't want to open up.
When I click on it, I see the hourglass cursor, then it goes away.
Is it possibly because I also have a program called iPod Access which helps ne to backtrack the songs?
I have tried uninstalling and installing it...no help.
Please advise me as to what is wrong! Thanks very much.

Is it possibly because I also have a program called iPod Access which helps ne to backtrack the songs?
Yes, it's possible this is screwing up iTunes.
What does "backtrack the songs" mean?

  • Installing iTunes to New Computer

Some time ago I moved all my iTunes information to an external hard drive. I recently got a new computer and want to install iTunes on the new computer but be able to view and access the media that's on the iTunes on my external hard drive. I tried installing iTunes to the hard drive's location, but when I open iTunes on the new computer none of the saved media is there. Any suggestions?

I bit the bullet and downloaded a fresh install download from apple.com since the updater would no longer work.
Still a mystery as to why the updater was no longer working.
Kept the original installed iTunes where it was and sent the new install to its same folder location.
First couple of attempts failed to download but I persisted and the third attempt it downloaded.
After the download, I went into the iTunes folder, clicked on the setup icon and the install was made complete.
Fortunately as diesel pointed out, all of my settings and media remained intact.
Thanks to diesel vdub for providing a little assurance, and now all is back to normal and up to date once again.

  • Installed Itunes on new computer and transferring songs to playlist is extremely slow

New computer purchased, running Windows 7, and after installing Itunes it takes forever to transfer music to playlists.  It takes about 1-2 minutes to tranfer the song to the playlist.
I downloaded Itunes the first time and lost the dialog box to finish installing so I downloaded again and installed.  Music is on an external hard drive connected via an USB port.
What can I do to speed up the transfer process?
    Thanks

  • Missing all audiobooks when installing itunes on new computer

My old laptop broke and I installed iTunes onto my new laptop but none of my audiobooks are there. My music, tv shows, etc. are all there...but no audiobooks.

Restore them from a backup, or put the old computer's internal drive in an enclosure and copy them off, or click here and ask the iTunes Store staff for a free redownload of them.

  • Several problems installing iTunes on new computer

Am trying to migrate my iTunes library, etc. to my new Dell computer running Windows 7.  My husband is attempting the same thing.  We have encountered different problems.
I installed iTunes on the new computer (without Quick Time initially.)  I authorized the new computer, then used my iPod to transfer my purchased music.  Next, I used home sharing to transfer the podcasts I follow and the music I ripped from my own CDs.  This all seemed to work.  Finally, I exported my library to an xml file, sent it to myself, then used it on the new computer to import my playlists.  Thought I was all set, but now when I open iTunes, I get an error message saying I have an audio configuration problem.  iTunes does come up and I can listen to my music on my headphones.  Read a few past discussions on this error message which indicated I should have installed Quick Time.  So, did that.  But the error message still pops up.  Any suggestions?
My husband used a cable connection to transfer files (not just iTunes-related) from his old computer to his new one.  Then he followed the process I described, above.  Resulted in multiple duplications of his playlists.  How should he resolve this?
    Thanks.

  • Installed iTunes on new computer -- but I can't get the Library to fill

I keep all of my music on an external hard drive. I got a new computer and downloaded iTunes 8.0.2.20. I used the external hard drive for iTunes on my old computer as well.
But now I can't get iTunes to find or recognize any of the music on my external HD. I've changed the iTunes Music Folder Location to the external hard drive's music location. I've repeatedly tried to Consolidate my Library. My playlist names have reappeared, but my library and playlists are completely empty. (In fact, when I click on Library, all I get is a blank black screen in iTunes.)
Any ideas how to get iTunes to recognize my music on my external HD?

What drive letter was the exHD on your old PC?
What drive letter is the exHD on the new PC?
    Make sure they're the same.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307844
And, did you put your old PC's copy of the *itunes library.itl* file on the exHD after you consolidated everything to it?
Press and hold the shift key while starting itunes, and choose the ITL file on the exHD.

  • I just installed itunes on new computer and songs disappeared from Ipod

I just reinstalled itunes on a computer that had a bug and was cleaned up and cleared out.  When I reinstalled itunes and it sync'd all my songs disappeared from my ipod. how do I get them back

    That is correct.
You should use your backup copy of your computer to put everything abck on the coputer, then you would sync them to your ipod.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup copy of your computer, njot good, then you can redownload some itunes purchases in some countries:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • Installing iTunes on new computer with library on external HD

I have my library on an external HD and have been using it with my laptop. Well the laptop is dead and I'm wanting to start using my mini. I downloaded iTunes, authorized the computer, signed in, plugged in the external HD and changed the pathway of the media folder location to the folder where the library is on the external HD (under the advanced tab of preferences). iTunes still does not "see" the library. What else do I need to do? I really do not want to copy it over to the computer's HD, I'd like to continue using the external HD since it has 1TB.
Thanks so much for the help.

Launch iTunes with the Shift key held down, click on Choose Library, and point it there. If only the iTunes media was stored on the drive, open the Advanced section of its preferences, ensure it's not going to copy the media to the internal drive, and drag the iTunes media folder into the open iTunes application window.
