Installing Windows 7 over Parallels

Ok, I'm at a loss why Win7 won't install.  I've done this many times before on other Macs with no problem.  YES, I've read the instructions (pretty much have them memorized now).  The only thing I can see is maybe Parallels/Windows is botching things up.  Any thoughts?

is this a bootcamp(native os's using a bootmanager) question
or a parallels (virtual machine running under osx) question?

  • Installing Windows 7 over XP on a Mac Pro

    Hi Folks,
I have Windows XP dual booting on my Mac Pro using Bootcamp.  I want to install Windows 7 over Windows XP.  I know I will loose all of my windows files and will need to reinstall all windows software.  But will this work?  Will it impact my mac os?  Are there any issues I should be aware of?
Any help/suggestions would be most appreciated.
    TIA,
    Shane

Lion is the easiet way to get current drives and because Apple security is better on 10.6.8 and Lion. Lion though really needs to reformat the drive the OS goes to (keep the old one as dual boot backup) and needs to add Lion Recovery.
There are no Apple support drivers w/o 10.6.3+.
8 is free and runs well or better -
so just boot Windows 7 and format the partitiion. What's to know? You want Windows 7 Pro if you have two processor (dual socket) or want to use more than 16GB RAM.
You do not want 32-bit. But it does matter what Mac model, 2006-7? or later. 2008 has full support for Windows 64-bit, the others don't but then you get stuck with trouble booting and trouble using more than 1.9GB making it next to impossible. That is and will be an issue.
And you need 10.6.3 DVD to have the Apple support software.
The number of threads moved and placed in wrong forum (Mac Pro turns out to be MacBook Pro) so I have to ask and because there ARE issues with Windows 7 on early Mac Pro model.

  • How to install windows 7 over windows 8 HP 2000- 2b16NR

So, I purchased this laptop at a pawn shop a couple of years ago, and it has served me pretty well up until now.  After the latest windows update, something went terribly, terribly, wrong.  For some unknown reason I am now stuck with Windows 8.1 Evaluation with the license expired, which means it shuts itself down EVERY hour.  I'm done with this, I hate the Windows 8 interface anyway, now its time to go back to something I know and love. I've read up on a lot of these posts, and joined the forums only because I did not see another post that was in direct relation to my own model number.  If someone could please guide me through the process of installing Windows 7 from a disk, it would be ever so helpful.  If you could also post a link pointing me in the right direction for all the drivers specific to my computer, that would be awesome as well, since I'm no techie, and really don't know a whole lot about this sort of thing outside of basic knowledge. Thanks in advance for the help!

I got my hands on a bootable copy of Windows 7.  Everything loads up just fine until I make the settings to US English etc, and click install, when I do that I get this error message: "The product key does not match any of the Windows images availible for installation.  Enter a different product key." Which doesn't make any sense to me, because since I've had this computer everything has updated just fine, and worked great up until this stupid update to 8.1. That being said, when I go into other options and select 'Reset my PC' I get another error message: "Unable to reset your PC.  A required driver partition is missing."  I've seen on some other posts where having the drive partitioned in the right way (format I guess?) is another issue with installing Windows 7 over 8.  If this indeed another source of the problem, how do I go about fixing it?

  • How to install Windows XP in parallel with Mac OS on a Macbook?

Can anyone tell me how to install Windows XP in parallel with Mac OS on a Macbook?
If I divide the hard drive into 2 patritions and install Win XP & Mac OS on each patrition, is it ok?

I don't think he meant "Parallels", I think he just meant "parallel", with a little 'p'.
There are three options for running Windows software on an Intel-based Mac:
Virtualization: you can install software such as Parallels or VMWare (along with a licensed copy of Windows) which will emulate the environment necessary to run Windows software. Performance is significantly degraded, but you can work with both Windows and Mac software simultaneously.
Dual boot: You can use Apple's Bootcamp to partition your drive and create a CD of Windows drivers for your devices, so that you can then install Windows on one partition of your drive. Your Windows software will run just as it does on any other Windows PC, but you have to reboot to switch between Windows and OS X.
Crossover: Crossover is a product that allows you to run Windows programs in OS X without installing Windows. Not all Windows software will work with Crossover though.

  • Trying to install Windows XP on Parallels...Error message! Help!

I have a macbook pro and I am trying to install Windows XP via Parallels on it. The installation seemed to be working until I got an error message that said "The file ASMS can't be found. Insert your HP cd into the drive." and then it said something about typing in the location address manually... Please help! I checked and the ASMS file IS on the cd but Parallels doesn't seem to be recognizing it...

I am also trying to install XP Pro, both with Boot Camp and Parallels, and meeting the missing asms file problem although I don't receive a missing HP card msg as I am using an original MS Win Pro installation disc. Instead I get a System Setup error log entry: ' I/O device error. Installation failed asms. D:\I386\asms. Component needed by Windows could not be installed.'
Apple Tech Help suggested I probably had a faulty disc but online searches show this problem has existed for some years and affected both Mac and PC users. The latter seem to be able to solve the problem by tinkering with the Registry - but what about us Mac types? Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Installing Windows 7 on Parallels with external DVD Drive

Hi. I have a Mac Mini, and just finished installing Parallels 8. I am now trying to install Windows 7, but they system is not recognizing my external DVD drive. I get a message telling me to install from an image file? Not sure what that means. Help! Thx.

I am doing this after doing a full wipe of my hard drive and reinstalling lion.
Previously, I had lion, and made a partition using disk utility and booted from the disk (this time it was from my Mac's SuperDrive which was functioning perfectly at this point in time) and finished the installation completely fine. I then used the drivers that were in my Snow Leopard DVD (I have a Snow Leopard DVD from a previous Mac I purchased).
The only difference between then and now is that I am using an external DVD drive.

For install Windows 7 Home 32 bit on your computer, we need to make sure the hardware is compatible with the new OS, and the manufacturer get the available drivers to have the devices work well with the new operating system. We could take use of
    Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.

  • How to install windows 7 and parallel 7 on my mac

    Hi folks,
I Need help on how to install parallel 7 and Win 7 on my iMac running on 10.8
Can anyone one out there help me with the steps?

    >. I tired clean install - doesn't work
To install Windows 7 on the Win8 notebook you need to change some settings in BIOS.
Firstly you have to disable the secure boot in BIOS.
Secondly switch from UEFI BIOS to CSM and save the changes.
Now you should be able to install Win 7
But before doing this I recommend creating the Toshiba recovery medium (flash USB memory or recovery disk

  • Installing Windows 7 thru Parallels

I installed Parallels, am am starting to install Window 7 (Professional). Do I use the 32 bit or 64 bit disc?

    Ask Parallels users?
Some want to dual boot, which requires installing Windows natively on its own partition, and then connect to that in Parallels.
Totally depends on your hardware (do you have 8GB RAM and quad core? are you running XP Mode?
Assuming this was retail, why Pro to begin with, and not Home Premium, or System Builder, which are all significantly less expensive. .EDU institutions provide Pro, but only in either 32 or 64-bit, no media ($extra) as ISO only.

  • Can I install Windows 7 over Windows 8?

I am looking at a HP 15-g070nr 15.6" laptop which comes with Windows 8 installed. However the main use I want this laptop for uses WIndows 7 and is mostly incompatable with Windows 8. Can I legally install Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OS over the Windows 8 OS without voiding the warranty?
    Tom
    This question was solved.

Installing Windows 7 will not void the warranty.
The license activation key for Windows 8.1 won't work for Windows 7. You will need a seperate license for that.
I advise you to install the 64-bit version of Windows 7. All required drivers for Windows 7 (64-bit) are available at the followin link. http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-15-Notebook-PC-series/6545564/model/7241977/drivers

  • Installed windows 7 over windows 8. Now I want to recover back to windows 8.

    Hello Everybody!
OK so here is my situation. I bought a Pavilion G7-2235DX with windows 8. I made one recovery disc becuase I was impatient and figured that my recovery partition would be enough.
I decided immediately to install windows 7, and I installed windows 7 and kept the GPT/GUID partition tables intact and left the recovery partition.
Now I want to go back to windows 8.
I hit F11 and entered the recovery program and selected the notebook harddrive as the recovery method. However this is when I get an Error that says no bootable disk and asks me to insert a boot disk and I cant continue.

    Hi:
Normally the recovery partition won't work when you install a non HP-imaged OS on the C:\ drive.
I would imagine your only way out is to order recovery media for your notebook from HP.
Click on the link below and then click on the link labeled Order Recovery Media.

Was there a problem with W7 on your PC, or do you just want to go back to W8?

  • Cannot install Windows XP over Windows 7 on an HP Elite 2540p laptop

Receives a blue screen error as soon as all system files are loaded and the message "Installing Windows" comes up.  Tried installing first from XP Pro OEM CD, and from HP CD.  Both with same results.  Hard drive had Windows 7 originally.

    Hi:
On your particular notebook it is easy to install Windows XP if you know what to do.
Read the setup guide section of the service manual at the link below, Chapter 5, page 100.
    http://bizsupport2.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c02664684/c02664684.pdf
Change the SATA device mode from AHCI to IDE. Save the setting there (F10 key), and again when you exit.
Boot from your XP disk and it should now install problem-free.
The tricky part is to install the SATA AHCI driver after you installed XP so you can change the setting back to AHCI.
That will enable your HDD to be able to use native command queuing, which is not available to you in IDE mode.
Install XP, post back when you are done, and I will give you the step by step directions to install the AHCI driver so you can change the storage setting back from IDE to AHCI.
You cannot change the setting back until you load the AHCI driver, or the notebook won't boot.
