Instant crash problem solved - here's how

I've just had two weeks of iphoto 6.0.2 crashing instantly every time I opened it and have faithfully followed all the advice on this forum to no avail.
It's now working again and this is what I did. You will lose your albums but keep your photos & rolls.
First make an archive of your iphoto library or take another form of backup.
Then move iphoto library out of pictures folder where iphoto.app can't see it.
Open iphoto - if you take the choose library option and point it at the new location then it will just crash again (in my experience). Move it again if you did try this. Open iphoto once more and choose create library.
You should now have a non-crashing new (but emtpy) library. Choose "import to library" from file menu and point it to the "originals" folder in wherever you have put the library.
iPhoto will now import all your pictures in rolls with all the roll names intact.
When I did it, it identified a corrupted file that it could not import - that might have been causing the original crashing - who knows?
When import finishes you will have all your pictures and all your rolls but none of your albums. I have tried creating a smart album and it seems OK with this without crashing.
I've also run the rebuild options and it's holding up so far.
Worked for me - I'm curious whether anyone else can come up with a solution that preserves the albums.
PS - chuck the old photo library away after import or back it up somewhere but don't put it back into the pictures file.

I have not yet tested it, but oh man will I be happy if it works. I can only assume that others reports of Smart Albums causing the problem has some validity, as I use them religiously. I keyword every single picture I bring in and create Smart Albums of all kinds.
Now here is the question assuming this does work...What about Smart Albums?
Do they need to be abandoned all together. Is it a temporary thing that will hopefully someday get resolved. I do not want to crash like this again. This has already happened once before and I went back to an iPhoto 5 Library and went through the task of re-keywording well over 3000 pictures. I eventually gave in again and gave iPhoto 6 another try. This time it worked for well over 2 months and I thought one of the updates must have addressed the issue. This last crash proved me wrong and I was left wondering...***!?!
So, if anyone finds out anything more concrete about Smart Albums and how they effect iPhoto 6 stability I hope they will reply here. Or maybe Apple will get wise to this very serious issue and get on it. It's definitely a big enough problem!
Thanks to those who take the time to research and SHARE their solutions on here.

    I bought and installed K8N Neo Fisr but now I encounter some real problems.
    I've tried to play two games: Pro evolution soccer 4 and GTA san andreas. Both worked fine yesterday
    with my old mobo.
    PES4 locks up on loading screen (at random point), on the menu or in the
    actual game. The computer might also crash/reboot after playing a few seconds.
    GTA locks up/reboots my computer on the main menu. Sometimes after GTA crash, Windows doesn't load.
    It just locks up after the blue loading bar has disappeared. If I go to safe mode or keep the comp shut down for a while,
    it will usually load windows again.
    Things I've tried without any help:
    -Using different IDE and power cables
    -Installing memories to different slots
    -Using both memories independently
    -Using maxtor hd alone as a primary master (has windows installed)
    -removing Nvidia ide drivers and using windows standard drivers instead
    -installing different graphic drivers
    -updating bios
    -checking temperatures (around 35-50 with load)
    -reinstalling windows
    Dxdiag video and audio test run without problems. Everything worked just fine yesterday with the old mobo.
    Any ideas?
    EDIT: "reinstalling windows"
    EDIT: SOLVED, Mobo failure. Tried a different copy -> no problems

    The OS should be installed on the MB,guarantee it. Do not remove the HDD with OS from your old MB.
    Change other memory to verify. Verify different VGA drivers. Use Liveupdate to update MB's drivers to the latest version.
    Have done that, don't help. I formatted my HD and installed windows again for this MB.
    What I noticed is that when I had my comp turned off for a few hours and started to play PES4 immediately after turning the power on, I was able to play it for like 5 minutes. Usually I can hardly get to the menus before it locks up. Sometimes I can play but it locks up after like 5-10 seconds. When it lock ups, the screen turns blue.

  • Got a problem? Here's how best to ask for help.

    Working with video editing on an NLE (Non Linear Editor) program can tax the most robust computers. Depending on many factors, this can be a daunting task, at best. Many of the components of one’s computer can be stressed, more than with almost any other operation, that it will ever perform.
    Getting help on the forum can seem almost as daunting, as the first thing that a poster is likely to encounter is a list of questions, before any answers. This is the natural flow, because people are trying to help remotely. They cannot come to your office and sit behind you to determine your computer system’s capabilities, and observe just what you are doing, when and how you are doing it. Do not be put off by these questions, as they are very necessary and will very likely give the respondents some clues on where to look for your problem.
    Problems can normally be broken down into these categories:
    1.) System
    2.) Assets (the Audio, Video and still images)
    3.) Project (how it is setup and with which Preset)
    4.) Workflow (what you are doing, and how you are doing it)
    If you prepare a checklist, before you post your problem, it will save everyone a great deal of time, and will likely yield your answer much more quickly. The more detail that you furnish, the fewer questions will remain, that have to be asked. Remember, you have to be the "eyes" for the others on the forum, if they are expected to help you. They could be thousands of mile away, in other time zones, and will not know about your system, your Assets, your Project or your workflow, until you tell them. Help them get started quickly, by telling them in your first post. Do your "homework," so they do not have to ask questions for the first five responses, and can start giving you answers much more quickly.
    Forum regular Bill Hunt offers these recommendations:
    System:
    Be very specific about your computer. Just saying that "I have a Dell" doesn’t tell them much of anything. List your CPU type and speed, i.e. Core2 Quad Q6700 2.3GHz. Same for your RAM, i.e. 4GB of DDS. Also, list your Video Card, type, connection and driver number and date. Same for your Audio System. Note: most of this data can be found in Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager. Pointing people to a URL on your computer company’s Web site isn’t a bad idea, but giving the exact details of your system is far, far better. It is likely that that Web site will have the general configuration, and who knows if that is exactly what you bought. List it for them, so they do not have to go and guess, and write down the specs. of your system.
    One of the most important aspects of your system will be the I/O sub-system. What is that, you might ask? Well, it’s your HDD’s (Hard Disk Drives). The important info is how many physical HDD’s do you have. List their size, their speed, their connection, the amount of free, defragmented space and how they are allocated. This would look something like this: "3x 200GB SATA II. Drive C:\ OS, programs and Windows Virtual Memory with 185GB free, D:\ media with 120GB free, E:\ Project files, output and Scratch Disks with 150GB free." If you have any drive partitioned (not a good thing nowadays), let everyone know and give details. If you have a RAID, give full details on how it is managed, the type and how it is used in your system. [As an aside, most RAID’s should not really be considered for a system drive, unless one has built in redundancy in the RAID, i.e. 3, or more, physical disks. Remember, this info can be critical. If you have CD/DVD burners, list them and their connections. If you have external HDD’s, list them with the same details as for your internal HDD’s.
    Next, tell about your Windows Virtual Memory (Page File). How large is it, where is it located on your system and how is it managed, i.e. dynamically by Windows, or static? Again, this can be critical. For info, you will need to go to Control Panel>System>Advanced>Performance and look. In the Settings>Advanced, you should see things like Process Scheduling, Memory Usage and Virtual Memory. This is where you will find the answers. Note: depending on which OS one has, the exact location and syntax may differ.
    While we’re on the OS, list the exact OS that you have, i.e. Vista Ultimate 64-bit SP-2 with all updates and hot-fixes.
    What version of the NLE are you using and has it been updated, i.e. PE3.0.2.
    Finally, list any other programs, that might be in use, while you are editing, such as MSN Messaging, etc. These can be critical, even though you are basically editing video.
    Assets:
    Give full details on your Assets. Just saying "a bunch of .AVI’s" tells people nothing. Be very specific with the details. Same for your Audio and for your still images. Size in pixels, file type, etc., are very important for the stills, and file type. Sample-rate and sample size are important for the Audio.
    Project:
    How is your Project setup? Which Preset did you use? What is the Duration of your Timeline. This gives someone the "lay of the land," so to speak and is very important. Note: your Project Preset should match your Video Assets. You can always Export/Share to some other frame size, or format, but your Project should match your Video Assets.
    Workflow:
    How have you arranged your Assets on the Timeline allows someone to "see" your Project in their mind. Information such as one 00;10;00;00 AVI (remember, you will have furnished complete details on those AVI’s, or MPEG’s when you listed your Assets above) on Video Track 1 (VT1) with its Audio on Audio Track 1 (AT1). One AVI used as a PiP (Picture in Picture) on VT2 with its Audio on AT2. One MP3 soundtrack for the full Duration on Soundtrack and my Narration on the Narration Track. List any Transitions, or Effects used. If you have Titles, list them. If you have any Keyframing used, list where and what they control.
    List exactly what you are doing and to which Asset you are doing it, when your problem occurs. If you are doing something like Export/Share, list the full settings (Presets) used, and be sure to mention any other tasks being performed by your computer, while you are doing the Export/Share.
    If you have already done some trouble shooting, list what you have done and the complete results. Were there any error messages? If so, give the full description. To say, "I had error messages," tells people nothing. What exactly did they say?
    This information will help people get right to your problem and will get you up and running much more quickly.
    As an aside, think about the title of your post. Saying "Problem" is not good enough. Instead, something like "PE7 Fails on Share to MPEG-2" would be better. First, you are trying to let everyone know something about your Problem, so they will see it, and be interested in helping you. If you are having an Audio issue, mention "Audio" in the title, so the right people will find your post. Not everyone knows everything about all aspects of Video. You want the right people to see your post and to be working with you, to fix your problem. Also, later on, it is good to have a title that will be easily found by others, who may have the same exact problem. If you get an answer that works, please post back that success, so others, finding your post, will know what worked, and what did not. Note: do not put your entire post into the title. That is just tough to read and understand. Use a few words, but make them the right words.

    Please note that this Tip was produced by Bill Hunt (the_wine_snob) and not me. I would never have the extent of knowledge needed to write this Tip.

  • Safari Problems?  Here's how to fix it!!

    Finally, I've fixed my computer after Safari has been causing numerous problems with it. No more spinning beach ball. What you have to do is start up your computer with the original Tiger disk, and then do a "reinstall" while also "archiving" your old files. It saves all your preferences, but allows you take a couple of steps back before having the problems with Safari. Once you do this you'll get a speedier computer, and can dump your "previous files" that you don't need anymore. I stumbled on it, but it has fixed the issues I have been having for two weeks. I highly recommend it. Good luck!!

    Hello Robert:
    What you describe is an archive and install - one of the three ways to upgrade. Actually, I suggest that approach as the way to upgrade - and if one is having problems - one way to install a fresh copy of OS X.

  • Encore V2 crashes - problem solved!

    Time to praise Adobe to the hilt...
    Encore V2 loaded succesfully, then always crashed when making a link or
    typing from keyboard.
    3 days - yes 3 days Adobe technical help tried to sort it out - really
    helpful and polite - answer came on day 3 - Welsh!
    Yes - if your machine has been set to Welsh keyboard Encore 2 will crash!
    For my sins I have a new sooper duper Dell - they speak double dutch but I
    think there might be a Welsh Nationalist somewhere sabotaging their
    goodwill! (only joking).
    Oh and Encore DVD2 is really worth the upgrade - great! In fact Adobe get
    double kudos for sending free upgrade to Audition 2 'cos I'd upgraded to
    Audition 1.5 only a month ago!
    All this praise for Adobe is making me weak....

  • Crashing Problem Solved So Far

    I downloaded the new upgrade 10.4.3 and ran programs that always had crashed in Tiger. I am delighted to report that none of them now crash. I partitioned my newest G4 to include both Tiger and Panther. If I was presenting a lecture out of school with time restraints I still would be most comfortable booting and presenting the material in Panther but this is a major improvement in my world..

    I tried to do that but when I went to my Internet Options and looked for a proxy under my LAN settings, it was "unchecked", I guess that this means that it automatically detects the proxy, which is what I see from time to time when loading internet explorer...You are right that Java's default setting is to go based off the browser's setting. Since the browser's setting is assumed to be automatic, I don't know what I need to do in regards to reconfiguring the plug-in, since I don't actually "know" what the proxy address and port are.
    I have never messed with any of the options under "LAN Settings" in regards to the proxy or with the Java proxy settings, and what I don't get is why all of a sudden it won't work...something doesn't add up....Thank you for the help, and I hope I can get to the bottom of this soon....

  • Browser won'topen crashes- problem solved

    My browser would not open.  It would start to open then crash after about two seconds.
    I fixed it!
    Back up data first!
    Solution:
    Just got to the gear and pull up the menu.
    go to security
    touch on security swipe in the menu
    type in "blackberry" and it will load the original software
    then you will need to download the latest software

    I was about to the above and had even gotten to the point of having completed the full backup, when suddenly I tripped over what the real cause was.
    Prior to doing the backup, I had checked if there were any software updates.  There were none.  But after I did the backup, suddenly there was an update available but when I clicked to do it, it said I did not have enough room to do it and had to free up some memory on my 16MG PB.  I removed some stupid videos my 9 year old had added in the past couple of days, and BEFORE I went back to do the download tried to open the browser one last time.  Now it finally was opening.
    So if you have internet connectivity it seems, and your browser button is not greyed but simply won't open, try to simply make room on your PB if you are running what may be near capacity.  I can't recall what my numbers in the "About" "Hardware" screen were prior to deleting data, but now after removing about a dozen photos, and deleting about 4-5 minutes of video only, it now reads
    Total Storage: 14.6 GB
    Free Storage:  104.6 MB
    Free Memory:  306.3 MB
    I'm gonna delete some more stuff now in my music stored.  Certainly do not need all five versions I have of "I Can't Get no Satisfaction". lol.
    EDIT:  I should also mention that the other symptom I was getting is that I could no longer bridge my emails and other bridged applications either.  I could open my Globe and Mail add-on program as well as check out The Score add-on, so along with checking whether wifi was connected, it was working.  It was simply choking on opening what was becoming programs that were too big for the size of memory available, but would not give any kind of error message.  The Browser would just simply try to open, and close 2 seconds later without rendering anything other than a black screen and the little arrow in the upper left corner sometimes coming on before going kaputz.  The bridging would simply freeze on a white screen forever of nothing until I would minimize it and X it away.
    And as a side note to the reply from Tex Tucker, you can't do what you recommend if you can't get into your browser in the first place,
    That would do it, however the first thing to try is
    1. Browser settings, Privacy and Security, Clear ALL
    2. Restart the Playbook.
    IF that does not fix it then do the security wipe

  • I fixed the Flash Player Problem...Here's How

    Okay, this worked for me.  Whether it will work for you, I hope so.  Thanks to Duelly Noted for much of the work, and dumb luck for the rest.
    First, you need 3 user accounts for windows.  When you open the start menu, on the top is the username and the icon you use.  Click on the icon, and it will go to manage accounts.  Now, make sure your account is set to administrator. Create 2 new accounts, and make sure BOTH are set as administrators, not users!!!
    Now to make it simple, I am going to use letters to name the accounts.
    A-Your main account, with the Flash Problem
    B- A second account
    C-The account you want to use as your new one
    You need to download the Flash installer, on both A and C.  Here is the link:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html
    While you are logged into A and C, you must install on both accounts.  Install to desktop.
    In account A, download and install the uninstaller.  uninstall flash player with the uninstaller above.  DO NOT UNINSTALL through WINDOWS PROGRAMS! Run whatever you use to clean your account, Disk Cleanup, etc.  Restart your computer.  Log out of the account.   Log into account B, it takes a moment to set the desktop.  Then log out.  Log into account C, and uninstall Flash Player from there.  With the uninstaller!!! Now clean that account too.  Restart again.  Log out of C.  Restarting helps clean the old files out. Log back into B, and transfer all your files from A to C.  Then log back into B.  Here's how:
    Click the start Menu, click computer, then click your C: drive. click Tools, click Folder Options, click the View tab, click Show hidden files and folders, click to clear the Hide protected operating system files check box, and then click OK.  Locate the user account for A,  where C is the drive on which Windows  is installed, and Old_Username is the name of the profile you want to copy user data from.  Highlight each  file and subfolder in this folder, except the following files:     * Ntuser.dat     * Ntuser.dat.log     * Ntuser.ini.  On the Edit menu, click Copy. # Locate the C:\Documents and Settings\New_Username folder, where C is the drive on which Windows XP is installed, and New_Username is the name of the user profile that you created in the "Create a New User Profile" section. # On the Edit menu, click Paste.  Log off the computer, and then log on as the new user. Note You must import your e-mail messages and addresses to the new user profile before you delete the old profile. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 313055  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313055/ ) Mail folders, address book, and e-mail messages are missing after you upgrade to Microsoft Windows .
    Now log on C.  Then make sure EVERYTHING transferred.  It worked on mine, but as far as Outlook, or Mail, your contacts should be imported, and hopefully your messages, too.  Then unless you are prompted to log in there, you will have to reset your settings.  If you don't know how, contact your service provider for your internet.
    If everything is transferred fine, then make sure A and B are logged off.  But first make sure all your files and accounts are working.  Since C is administrator, simply delete A and B.  Then you are left with C, and a destination for a working Flash.  At this point, clean and defrag your drive.
    Then install flash on C.  What I figure is the Flash Problem might be code, and if you have Flash on A and C, whatever problem transfers with your files.  Without 2 Flashes to go to, it just gets lost.
    This worked great for me, I hope it works for you too.  I pray that I didn't miss a step, but as far as physical computer problems, I am great.  With software, I am still learning.  But between what I have been suggested to do, and a little bit of conjecture, I now have Flash.
    P.S.  Adobe support is WORTHLESS on this!  I contacted them, and they told me they couldn't help me without registering my product.  But you can't since Flash is a free program and there is not serial number, which is the first step to register a program.  Then, they followed up with 3 responses asking if my problem had been solved, or to contact them.  BUT you just said you couldn't help me unless I registered.  Then they considered my problem closed and that was that.  I replied with exactly what they said to me, and reopened the case.  You know, just for the heck of it.  Then, HA HA, they sent me a survey asking how the help went for me.  Oh, I enjoyed that survey indeed.

    I apologize for that.  Here is the problem I was having:
    With two particular sites, espn.com and ign.com, though I have heard it happened on many other sites as well.  On these sites, the flash content for backgrounds, advertisements, everything else would run fine.  The issue was with the video content.  On ESPN.COM, if I wanted to watch a larger video the length of the screen, when I loaded it the screen would freeze on a still image, and the sound would play but not the video.  On the still image, a white play arrow would be static with a white circle around it.  If I called up the Flash settings menu, it would be inoperative, frozen, and you could not close it.  On smaller videos, the box would stay black with no picture, no sound.  If I called up the Flash menu, same thing would happen, frozen.  On IGN.COM, pretty much the same thing.  Other Flash content would load fine, but not videos.  On the link to a video, a Flash advertisement next to the video box would play, but not the video.  Occasionally, an ad would play in the video screen fine, but no requested video.  All black, with a frozen Flash settings menu.  That's pretty much it, sorry for leaving that out.  But on every other site I visited with video (ie. Youtube, gamespot, etc.) everything would run fine.  But the two in question are a couple of the sites I visit most, so I was on a mission to fix it.

    Hello
    Simple problem - don,t know how to solve it.
    With Premiere CC when I try to do a selection (click... drag... release the click) very often it stop way before the end of the move I'm swinging the Magic Mouse. I taught that the mouse clicking was defective and went to get a new Magic Mouse after lots of frustration. Today, I have an edit to do it it does the SAME thing !!
    I was like ????#$%?&*(???
    Opened all the lights and taught I've trow the new mouse to the garbage and was using the defective mouse again... no !! - ??
    Actually, the bran new mouse is doing the same thing. What I understand after investigating on the motion and watching carefully my fingers !! -  is that when I click I have to keep my finger at the EXACT same place on the mouse... drag and release and it's fine. If I click by pushing on the mouse and my finder is moving of a 1/32th of a millimeter, it will release and my selection will be to redo. You can understand my frustration ! - 75$ later... same problem, but I know that if I click with about 5 pounds of pressure and trying to pass my finger through the plastic of the mouse, it you stay steady and make it !
    The problem is that scrolling is enable while clicking and it bugs.
    How to disable it ??
    Simple question - can't find the answer !

    Helllooo !?
    sorry but the Magic Mouse is just useless with the new Adobe Premiere CC and since I'm not the only one but can't find answer this is really disappointing. This mouse is just fantastic and now I have to swap from a USB mouse to the Magic Mouse every times I do some editing. My USB mouse if hurting my hand somehow and I want to got back to the Magic Mouse asap. Please - for sure there is a simple solution !
    Thanks !!

  • How do I fix a FINDER crash problem in 10.6.8

    I recently, in the last 10 days, started having a FINDER crash problem with my iMac 24" (iMac9,1) Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06 GHz computer.
    I have 4 GB of ram installed, no external hard disks installed.
    It seems to crash when I have five or more applications open, but it is not consistant.
    When it freezes or crashes, I get the spinning ball. I open the Force Quit Window with comand, option, escape and it show Finder not responding.
    I click on Finder and tell it to relaunch. It does nothing. At that point I cannot even go to the APPLE icon on the dock and do a shutdown or restart.
    From that point on, I have to press and hold the START button to shut the computer down.
    I have checked the hard disk integrity with Disk Utility after starting on the Snow Leopard 1.6 install disk. everything shows good.
    I have repaired permissions using the same application. I then restart the computer and log back in.
    I have used Onyx for Snow Leopard version 2.3.1 to do some maintenance routines.
    I have checked the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive and it passes.
    I have verified that the Daily, Weekly, Monthly routines have been run. They have.

  • Success with sorting Compressor Leopard S L O W encode problem - here's how

    Hi all,
    After struggling for a LONG time and picking up some tips here on the way, I finally got Compressor encoding in a reasonable time on Leopard - before it was taking DAYS to compress to H.264 - it would just crawl along at a brain numbingly slow pace and I knew something was wrong.
    Not knowing any better I'd done an upgrade from Tiger to Leopard and then had this huge slowdown in compressor.
    here's how I solved it.
    1. Followed the steps in the Apple KB article
    (Also summarised here http://www.scottsimmons.tv/blog/2008/01/11/compressor-hatred-resolved/ )
    That wasn't enough on it's own, however. I tried it about 4 times to no avail.
    2. Even though I wasn't having 'can't connect to queue' or QMaster issues I still did the prefs change listed here
    http://www.extreme-nepal.com/forumboards/Qmasterfix.png
    And lo and behold I am now getting decent encode times again under Leopard.
    Hope this helps someone.
    Regards
    Dave

  • How to problem solve adf issue in the mx340 model

    how to problem solve adf issue in the mx340 model

    Alex,
    the missing thing in your example is the fact, that if only one value is selected, the parameter has exact this value like BOSTON. If you choose more than one value, the parameter includes the *'*, so that it looks like *'BOSTON','NEW YORK'*. So you need to check in the package, if there's a *,* in the parameter or not. If yes there's more than one value, if not it's only one value or it's null.
    So change your package to (you need to expand your variables)
    create or replace package bip_departments_2_parameters
    as
    p_dep_2_param varchar2(1000);
    p_loc_1_param varchar2(1000);
    p_where_clause varchar2(1000);
    function beforereporttrigger
    return boolean;
    end bip_departments_2_parameters;
    create or replace package body bip_departments_2_parameters
    as
    function beforereporttrigger
    return boolean
    is
    l_return boolean := true;
    begin
    p_where_clause := ' ';
    if p_dep_2_param is not null then
    if instr(p_dep_2_param,',')>0 then
    p_where_clause := 'WHERE DNAME in ('||p_dep_2_param||')';
    else
    p_where_clause := 'WHERE DNAME = '''||p_dep_2_param||'''';
    end if;
    if p_loc_1_param is not null then
    if instr(p_loc_1_param,',')>0 then
    p_where_clause := p_where_clause || ' AND LOC IN ('||p_loc_1_param||')';
    else
    p_where_clause := p_where_clause || ' AND LOC = '''||p_loc_1_param||'''';
    end if;
    end if;
    else
    if p_loc_1_param is not null then
    if instr(p_loc_1_param,',')>0 then
    p_where_clause := p_where_clause || 'WHERE LOC in ('||p_loc_1_param||')';
    else
    p_where_clause := p_where_clause || 'WHERE LOC = '''||p_loc_1_param||'''';
    end if;
    end if;
    end if;
    return (l_return);
    end beforereporttrigger;
    end bip_departments_2_parameters;
    I've written a similar example at http://www.oracle.com/global/de/community/bip/tipps/Dynamische_Queries/index.html ... but it's in german.

              Not quite surewhat your asking exactly. You look here for different ways on importing media from nano to your computer! https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2417169?start=0&tstart=0
