What is the difference if you have Instant Message info on someones contact or not

I do not understamd your question. I can't find an Instant Message app in the app store.
Please provide more/clearer information.

Contact list and instant messages

Can people on your contact list read your instant messages to someone different on your contact list or can they only see what you IM to them personally?

I'm not sure if I understand your question correctly, but in one-on-one chat, the only persons who can see the messages that you sent is you and the contact that you are chatting with.

I can no longer click on online contacts and institue instant messaging .

I yse Yahoo.com and it shows a list of online contacts. I used to be able to click on an online contact and start Instant Messaging. That no longer works.

I am sending text messages to some people who think they come from my husband. Also evertime I send a text to my husband, a copy is sent to me too.

Also everytime I send a text to my husband, a copy is sent to me too. I do however receive text message from people to my phone and it seems to work fine if they do not have my husbands info.

You don't necessarily need separate AppleIDs, but you need to set the Send and Receive for Messages to different addresses (Settings App > Messages).

Messages Does Not Display Contact Card

When I message someone or they message me to/from my Messages App on my MBP Messages will not fill in their contact information from my contacts. The only exception to this is when I am messaging someone who uses their email as their iMessage/Messages primary address.
For example, if I am messaging my friend who has an iPhone and their primary form of contact is their phone number then they show up as a phone number in my Messages app on my computer. However, on my phone they show up with their contact information filled in and the messages usually sync (sometimes there is issues where my computer will take me back to the last place I sent a message on the computer even though it has synced all of the messages I have also sent from my phone that day.) *See Screen Shot 1 Below*
The opposite example is if I am messaging someone who has set their primary contact information to be their email address. In this case, Messages will add their contact information and picture to the message thread similar to "Brent" and "Mom" in Screen Shot 2 below.
I don't know what else to do. I've tried restarting the app. Deleting message threads and restarting them. I cannot find other people who are having this issue as well. I'm just trying to figure out why my messages won't sync contact info. It all started when facebook updated their syncing with contacts. And yes, all of these phone numbers are in my contacts and assigned to contacts with pictures both on my phone and synced to my MBP.

Not sure I would have got that one.
Can't say I have seen it before.
Custom in Language and text can mean two things.
1) You have either added things to particular Displays (such as day and Date to the Time display)
2) You can changed something like a Measurement setting from British Imperial to Metric
There are other "tweaks" such as using a Chinese Calendar whilst saying you are in the US.
I have mine set to United States so I can use the AIM SMS "feature" in Messages.

Instant Messaging no longer works for me..why?

Instant Message came pre-loaded on my iPad 2 when purchased over 2 years ago. Always worked. Ever since downloading IOS7 and related fix-packs, no longer works. Ive gone to Settings and what I see does NOT match the directions apple.support. What is going on? Do I need a reloaded app from the Appke Store? If so, which one? Maybe I need an appt with my local apple store for a look-see. Yes, I've shut the iPad down altogether and brought it back up but it still is not working. So annoying,

People contacting me not in my contacts

Recently in the last couple months I have had random people send me messages to become a contact. I do not know these people so I block them. My privacy settings are set to contacts only so how can I stop this?

unfortunately, there is no option yet to block/filter contact requests, regardless if they are requests from legitimate users or from possible spammers/scammers. The only things you can do at the moment is indeed to ignore and block them (and report them to abuse@skype,net). The Privacy Settings in Skype can only prevent/stop unwanted calls/instant messages from non-contacts, not contact requests.

Instant Messaging - Why is going through Google chat?

HI There,
I have upgraded to mountain lion on both my imac and macbook pro. I logged into the instant messaging today and I signed in with my apple ID, but then it used google chat to talk to people? I have anoher mac user who messages me and she said she uses it through the mac network. Im confused?
When I logged out of gmail. I went back to the chat and I couldnt chat anymore

Hi,
On first run Messages asks you for an Apple ID.
It does not have to be linked to iCloud.
However it does generally mean you could be using an @mac.com @me.com or @icloud.com that is linked to iCloud.
As Apple IDs with these endings are also Valid AIM Screen Names you can use the Messages > Preferences > Accounts pane > + icon under the list to Add them as AIM names.
(1 Name 2 services)
If your Apple ID is an external email such as GoogleMail one then it too can be an Active Jabber ID is Messages (if you enable "Talk" on your Account settings at Google).
Potentially again 1 name 2 services.
Of course as some of these are emails they appear in System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars and can be Enabled for Messages there.
However deleting an Account in Messages (Hit the - icon in the accounts list fro anything other than the iMesssages or Bonjour one) should "deactivate" it in the Mail, Contacts and Calendars pane. (As should just unticking the "Enable this Account box").
So....
Your Apple ID can be used for iMessages.
It may also be able to be the Name or ID for another service as well.
Accounts should be able to be Disabled in both the app (Preferences > Accounts) and in System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars.
If you have an Apple ID that you then linked to iCloud like I did you may have the following:-
An external email that is the original Apple ID that allows access to your iCloud stuff.
An @me.com name that your were given at the initial launch of iCloud
And a Later @icloud.com one as well.
All three with the set password allow access to iCloud.
For iMessages they are separate IDs (it will try to link them like crazy if you have a second iPhone like I do and want to keep them separate)
For AIM they are considered as separate IDs.
Aside from making sure you understand the names and IDs that can be used with which services there odd occasions that are reported when the App will list telephone numbers Only and tell all existing chats lists in the main window are Bonjour Chats as you cycle through all of them.
Other people have reported loss of Names in the Chat listing and one particular service being listed at the "service" that it will be on. (I have seen threads list AIM and Jabber).
The "Bonjour" chat ones seems to be solved by doing a PRAM reset
Shut down the computer.
Restart it holding down Apple/CMD ( or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.
The others seem to be linked to the Contacts App not list a My Card.
Your Details should appear at the My Card (Head and Shoulders icon)
If they do not use the Card Menu in the Contacts app to reset it.

Not able to send instant message through CLP

Hello All,
I am a beginner in portals.
I am doing a test assignment on collaboration.
1.I have enabled the Collaboration Launch Pad.
2.Now when I click on the link, CLP opens. I have added some contacts to it.
3.Then I tried to send an instant message and then I get the error:
Could not open a new instant-messaging session. All invitees are offline. Try again later.
I know that some configurations need to be done to be able to send the instant message.
Please let me know the configuration steps for the same or any relevant document.
Please help me with this.

Please check the collaboration contacts is portal users.
Make sure that other portal user also logged in the portal for sending instance message.
OR you can try to loging with two differnet portal userid and try to use instant-messaging functinality by sending message.
