Instant messaging in leopard

hi. im relatively new to os x and i was wondering if something was possible and if so, how is it done.
I like the addition of the chat bubble in the top bar by the clock.
however im not sure im liking iChat because i only have a few friends who use AIM.
Is it possible to get another instant messenger program, and have the bubble by the clock use the new messenger instead of iChat ??

Adium is a popular third-party choice for chat clients. It supports many different chat protocols, including AIM, MSN, Yahoo!, and others. You can get it here: http://www.adiumx.com

Cant find instant message on my mac book pro

im running snowleopard on my mac book pro and i cant acess or find my instant messaging, no icon, and cant find it in finder or anywhere??? i bought it in 2011, its actually my sisters, my 2009 MBP works fine, any answers out there?

In answer to your second question, it wouldn't matter much on your sister's MBP, as Snow Leopard doesn't support iCloud for messaging (or for much of anything, though you can force a few things). Her iChat is limited to AIM instant messaging and such.
On your MBP, which according to your profile is running Lion (10.7.5), you also won't have access to iCloud messaging (iMessage) unless you installed the beta-test iMessages application and somehow kept it running. (I have heard it can no longer be installed and may no longer work at all. That's third-hand; I haven't tried it.) Your iChat will also be limited to AIM and such.
For those with iMessage-capable phones and computers, there is a choice to be made. Apple's apparent concept for iCloud would suggest that you would use a single iCloud account for all of the devices you individually own or use. (I do that; my wife does also, with her own ID.) That model works well when, for example, you want to receive all the same iMessages on all of your devices. Even if you don't, there are ways to keep them separate (e.g., use the phone number to send/receive iMessages on your iPhone while using an email address on the MBP).

AOL Instant Message PW Error

Since updating to 10.7.2, I'm getting this annoying pop up error message about AOL instant messaging password error. The message states: iChat can’t log in to @mac.com because your login ID or password is incorrect. I don't use ichat and want the message to stop, so what do I do?

In iChat go to the iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts
In here go to the Server Setting tab/Button for your @mac.com name
Disable (Untick) the SSL option.
Make sure the NON SSL server reads login.oscar.aol.com
This is the most common issue if the name worked before.
The other issue is having a @Mac.com name with a password that is longer than 16 characters.
If you are just getting around to using the @Mac.com in ICHat you will need to shorten the Password due to the Limit AIM has on checking passwords.

DId you download and Install the COMBO version of the last Update that you did ?
iChat on the Install Disk is likely to be several versions behind where your OS has been Updated to.
It needs to Match the OS level.
iChat Updates come in the OS Updates.
You need to run the Updater manually as Software Updates keeps records of what it has done and thinks iChat is up to date.
If you are on Snow Leopard then the COMBO version of 10.6.7 is here
If you are on Leopard then the COMBO for 10.5.8 is here
Googling Mac OS X 10.x.x COMBO where x.x is the version you are up to will generally find the link to the right page if you are at a different OS version.

Instant Messaging - Why is going through Google chat?

HI There,
I have upgraded to mountain lion on both my imac and macbook pro. I logged into the instant messaging today and I signed in with my apple ID, but then it used google chat to talk to people? I have anoher mac user who messages me and she said she uses it through the mac network. Im confused?
When I logged out of gmail. I went back to the chat and I couldnt chat anymore

Hi,
On first run Messages asks you for an Apple ID.
It does not have to be linked to iCloud.
However it does generally mean you could be using an @mac.com @me.com or @icloud.com that is linked to iCloud.
As Apple IDs with these endings are also Valid AIM Screen Names you can use the Messages > Preferences > Accounts pane > + icon under the list to Add them as AIM names.
(1 Name 2 services)
If your Apple ID is an external email such as GoogleMail one then it too can be an Active Jabber ID is Messages (if you enable "Talk" on your Account settings at Google).
Potentially again 1 name 2 services.
Of course as some of these are emails they appear in System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars and can be Enabled for Messages there.
However deleting an Account in Messages (Hit the - icon in the accounts list fro anything other than the iMesssages or Bonjour one) should "deactivate" it in the Mail, Contacts and Calendars pane. (As should just unticking the "Enable this Account box").
So....
Your Apple ID can be used for iMessages.
It may also be able to be the Name or ID for another service as well.
Accounts should be able to be Disabled in both the app (Preferences > Accounts) and in System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars.
If you have an Apple ID that you then linked to iCloud like I did you may have the following:-
An external email that is the original Apple ID that allows access to your iCloud stuff.
An @me.com name that your were given at the initial launch of iCloud
And a Later @icloud.com one as well.
All three with the set password allow access to iCloud.
For iMessages they are separate IDs (it will try to link them like crazy if you have a second iPhone like I do and want to keep them separate)
For AIM they are considered as separate IDs.
Aside from making sure you understand the names and IDs that can be used with which services there odd occasions that are reported when the App will list telephone numbers Only and tell all existing chats lists in the main window are Bonjour Chats as you cycle through all of them.
Other people have reported loss of Names in the Chat listing and one particular service being listed at the "service" that it will be on. (I have seen threads list AIM and Jabber).
The "Bonjour" chat ones seems to be solved by doing a PRAM reset
Shut down the computer.
Restart it holding down Apple/CMD ( or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.
The others seem to be linked to the Contacts App not list a My Card.
Your Details should appear at the My Card (Head and Shoulders icon)
If they do not use the Card Menu in the Contacts app to reset it.

Instant Message won't send

For some reason when I send an instant message on skype, it has this loading circle by the message but no matter how long it takes, it doesn't say it's been sent. I don't know what to do. Do I need to uninstall and reinstall skype?

I'm having the same problem. When I'm on skype on my desktop computer (windows 7) for some reason sending IM's is really slow. We both are online and with a stable connection, Skype will be slow in sending even though I can surf the net fine and even though my contact appears as online. He can send messages to me, so clearly he is online and with a stable, working connection. All of a sudden, Skype will "get stuck" on a particular IM I'm sending. The last time it happened it took 9 minutes to send my message. The time sent on the screen is the time when I clicked "send" even though he received my message 9 minutes later. It may happen several times during one particular conversation. This never happens on my laptop (macbook pro OSX snow leopard). Is it an OS thing?

Not able to send instant message through CLP

Hello All,
I am a beginner in portals.
I am doing a test assignment on collaboration.
1.I have enabled the Collaboration Launch Pad.
2.Now when I click on the link, CLP opens. I have added some contacts to it.
3.Then I tried to send an instant message and then I get the error:
Could not open a new instant-messaging session. All invitees are offline. Try again later.
I know that some configurations need to be done to be able to send the instant message.
Please let me know the configuration steps for the same or any relevant document.
Please help me with this.

Please check the collaboration contacts is portal users.
Make sure that other portal user also logged in the portal for sending instance message.
OR you can try to loging with two differnet portal userid and try to use instant-messaging functinality by sending message.

Is there any way to organize instant messages?

Today's generation, including our children, loves instant messaging. From my point of view, it has significant drawbacks. Why? Because it quickly becomes disorganized. Messages, photos, and other information is all in a jumbled stream. By contrast, email messages can easily be organized into folders and retrieved months or years later. Searching through email (or separate email folders) is a breeze. By contrast, finding something in instant messages (including wonderful photos) that is a week old, a month old, a year old, eludes me.
The other beauty of email is that when a message arrives by email, the recipient can keep it in his or her inbox as a constant reminder that it needs to be dealt with before filing it away in a more hidden location (an email folder). Instant messages, by contrast, pile up over time (often with a recipient in my generation not even recognizing that one has arrived) and there is no way to keep the significant action items visible while filing away the others.
Does anyone know of any tips or apps that might impose order on instant messages? If so, I suspect other members of my generation would be grateful to know about them. I feel foolish enough about asking this question that I wish Apple didn't require me to use my real name. :-)

Thanks Kilgore-Trout (love your name and love Breakfast of Champions). That is indeed the problem. Some day I hope these two tools will converge so that the recipient may easily move an occasional important instant message to email to establish permanence. Current methods for doing that are so primitive as to be useless.

How can I get my instant message icon to open? Seems to be stuck.

I wrote several instant messages this morning on my AirMac. No problem. Went back to read and respond to new IM, but IM icon will not open. If the IM comes in when I am on the computer, I can read it in the upper right hand corner of my MacBook Air before it goes away, but I cannot respond. Can anyone tell me how to open the Instant Message icon?

Try clicking on the apple symbol at the top left of the screen and chosing "Force Quit" and then close IM.
Once its closed it should reopen without a problem

Nokia 6300 - Instant Messaging icon/functionality ...

Hi everybody,
I'm from Canada, and just bought a Nokia 6300 brand new a few days ago. This morning, I went on my phone to change the wallpaper, and for a second, the phone blinked and changed back to the default provider theme. I then changed back the wallpaper, but when I go into the menu, my instant messaging icon is not there anymore. Obviously, restarting the phone didn't solve the problem.
I don't know if anybody got this problem before. I've seen other functionalities missing like Calculator and Email and such, so maybe it's a software fault. Anyone can advise how to fix this problem? Is this a good phone or I just see the problems with it?
My firmware version is 4.71 28/02/2007.

It seems like your phones software has gone a bit corrupted. Please update it with the Nokia Software Updater. This should solve your problem, if not then you need to take the phone to a Nokia Service Center.
