Intel, 7.2, BFD - Possible?

Has anybody been succesful as getting BFD and Logic 7.2 to run on an Intel machine? I know that 7.2 does not support Rosetta, and BFD only has a Universal for the VST version ... so am I out of luck until they put out a Universal for AU?
Intel iMac 2 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Logic 7.2, slightly below average IQ

Under the hood, 7.2 is compiled for Intel (Universal Binary is an app with executable code optimised for Intel and PPC macs). Versions prior to 7.2 are not universal and will yield poor performance, particularly for intensive and realtime apps. Logic is both. The performance increase will be significant. The difference is that there is a conversion between the 2 that must be made, realtime. Big CPU hit and response drops.

  • Installing libpng for Intel Tiger...possible?

    Hi OSX *nix folks,
I'm trying to recompile my PHP with GD enabled - I am following the instructions here http://developer.apple.com/internet/opensource/php.html.
The guide recommends using fink to install the graphics libraries. But I'm stopped at "fink install libpng." When I run this (as root) I get "Failed: no package found for specification 'libpng'"
Looking further online it seems that building libpng may be an issue on Intel macs.
Anybody installed this successfully? Got any tips for a relative n00b? Any help is much appreciated...thanks! I'm on 10.4.9, soon to be 10.4.10.

    Kurt--
Rather than re-compile PHP4 for your system, you could also just use the Entropy PHP5 distribution (unless you really want to do the re-compile). It's an easy install, and includes the GD library.
There are two "gotchas" with this package, though: First, make sure you download the correct package. He has a package for Apache 1.3 and Apache 2. Unless you've also installed Apache 2 (which I don't necessarily recommend), you'll want the one for Apache 1.3.
Second, if you've already enabled the stock PHP4, you need to disable it by commenting out the two lines in the httpd.conf file that you uncommented:
    <pre class="command">LoadModule php4_module libexec/httpd/libphp4.so
    AddModule mod_php4.c</pre>
Just add the "#" back at the head of each line:
    <pre class="command">#LoadModule php4_module libexec/httpd/libphp4.so
    #AddModule mod_php4.c</pre>

  • IMac intel core 2 due possible logic board failure how much to repair? 3 beeps problem

    Hi guys,
I have an iMac intel core 2 duo. I have the 3 beeps problem. iMac won't start up. I push power button, hear start up sound but screen stays grey &amp; beeps, Apple logo doesn't even appear. I took out ram &amp; memory to clean because it was very dusty down there. Still not working. If it happens to be a logic board problem, how much am I looking at to get it repaired? Or am I better off purchasing a new computer?
Or if I had to buy new ram &amp; or memory how much would that cost?

Three beeps indicates a RAM problem.
I would try cleaning the Ram slots with a little alcohol on a Q-tip to make sure that all the dust is gone. Then reinstall the RAM modules pressing real hard on each module with both thumbs to making sure that they are firmly seated in the slots.

  • Intel iMac Bluetooth problems - possibly a defective computer?

Hi there - we just got a new iMac and just took it out of the box to get it set up and the mosue and keyboard won't work with it. The bluetooth mouse will pair, but the connection keeps dropping. The keyboard won't pair at all. The bluetooth status icon on the screen altenately shows that it is not connected, that it is connected and that bluetooth is not available.
Has anyone else experienced this with a brand new iMac?
    Thanks

Does this basically means that NO BLUETOOTH connection is available between iPad2 and MacBookPro (5.5)?
Because I just posted a question since I don't seem to be able to pair the above mentioned devices: my MBP shows "pairing successful", whereas my iPad says "not connected" and doesn't even discover/"see" my MBP.
(not only the MBP, but my Mac-mini as well, although I set it to "discoverable"-my MBP sees the Mac-mini....)
If you know the answer, could you also explain why my iPad doesn't seem to "see" other devices that are discoverable like that example with the Mac-mini?
    Thank you very much!!!

  • Using Time Machine to backup a iMac G5 and restore to an intel iMac

Is it possible to use Time Machine to backup my iMac G5 and restore my backup to a new intel iMac?
The reason being is that I my mother-in-law's company bought her a new intel Mac and she wants to trade with me since she only uses her Mac for e-mail, photos and accounting software.
I was thinking of making sure her data is preserved by using the migration assistant to transfer her data to my iMac G5 and then using my time machine backup to restore to her intel iMac. I have concerns about this method after reading about the intel/powerpc issues with time machine. I also have concerns that perhaps the version of MacOS 10.5 installed to my iMac G5 will not be optimized for intel.

Well, not entirely. You cannot install or restore a PPC version of OS X to an Intel Mac because the PPC system will not work on an Intel Mac. You can copy your personal files, most preference files, and third-party applications (although it would be preferable to update all PPC-only apps to universal binaries which perform better on Intel machines.
Another possible concern is if your mother's company is transferring the ownership to her or simply purchasing the unit for her to use. In the latter case the computer belongs to the company, not your mother. She cannot then give it to you because it isn't hers. This problem should be resolved beforehand because the company may one day want the computer back.

  • How to have Snow Leopard, Mavericks with built-in recovery, and Windows 7 (Bootcamp) on my iMac (Intel)?

I would like to have Snow Leopard, Mavericks with built-in recovery, and Windows 7 (Bootcamp) on my iMac (Intel).  Is this possible?  If so, how?  Currently, I have Snow Leopard and Windows 7 (Bootcamp) running on my iMac.  I have enough disk space to split my Snow Leopard partition.  I have read that if I split my Snow Leopard partition, clone my Snow Leopard partition to the new partition, and boot to the new partition, that I may have problems with the Maverick's upgrade because it may not be able to create the recovery parition, or that it may erase the Windows partition, or that it may mess up the Windows boot process.

Simplest is to install Mavs on an ext HD, using FW or TB. I don't do windoze, so can't advise about the Boot Camp and multiple volumes issue. Since there's no Boot Camp, I have four volumes running SL through Mavs.

  • Transfering from G5 to Intel iMac

Hi everyone. My first post here. I have a 20" G5 based iMac I have been using for a bit. I am about to upgrade to 24" Intel iMac. Since I started using OS X, transferring data from one to another has been simple, just attach a firewire cable and good to go.
However, now I am moving over from PPC to Intel, I am faced with either using that method or fresh install to take advantage of as much Intel based software as possible. Main programs I am worried about are MS Office X and Adobe CS3 Premium. I also paid for a bunch of shareware as well. I am fairly certain that when I do the transfer, program does not install the Intel version unless it's Universal. Do some programs tell you to upgrade to Intel version when you run the PPC version? Many questions...
So, what is your recommendation? Fresh install or transfer then individually figure out which ones replace? Thanks much in advance.
    Ben

Hi, just to let you know, I transferred by saving everything but Apps on an ext HD. Then transfering to my new intel, Apps are best installed from the CD-rom. Shareware Apps, go onto the site and re download, you should have the "key" backed up in your computer.
I used this method for Image Tricks and a bunch of others...In real estate the motto is, Location, Location, Location, with computers it's Back Up, Back Up, Back Up...L

  • What to buy? - G5 or Intel ? ?

Daughter #1 needs a new computer so I'm giving her my 1 year old iMac G5 17" 1.8 ghz. That means I can upgrade to a 20" iMac. I'm torn about buying an iMac Intel or a 2.1 ghz G5.
Outside of the iLife suite, Safari and Mail, I use the iMac with Office 2004, Photoshop Elements 2.0, and old Max Payne game (shooting bad guys relieves stress) and a fair amount of DVD burning.
The only thing I really hated about the current iMac was the sloooow DVD burning. I would only burn at 1x.
I think the latest G5 had taken care of CPU cooling issues, so...what do do? Intel or G5. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciate

The only app of the ones you've listed that I'd be concerned about is Photoshop Elements, and that's probably fine because things will simply run more slowly - not unacceptably.
Aside from that, there are little teething issues at the moment like Flash or video format plug-ins not working quite right, but if you're willing to wait it out those should be cleared up fairly quickly.
As such, it's more a matter of how future-proof you want to be. If you don't mind your existing apps running at less than peak performance until you upgrade to Intel-native ones (where possible), go with Intel. If not, go with the iMac G5; it's still a quick and useful machine, and it won't become obsolete that quickly.

  • Anyone use VMware to run windows on a intel macboon pro

I am looking for a reliable emulator to run widows as an application in my macbook pro.
Does anyone have any experience with the VM WARE player or such.
    Any help is appriciated.
    Happy Holidays All,
    Grant Parkis

I use Parallels to run Vista and XP Pro. However it is not nessecary to run emulation software any longer on the mac platform, since Intel processors make it possible to run these OS's natively.
While I do use Parallels to run Windows. For the few moments i really do need to do such a silly thing, Bootcamp is MUCH better to use because Parallels emulates windows, and Bootcamp literally lets you partition the HD for a space to install the OS for real. If anyone is wondering, IMO Bootcamp is a bit more of an inconvienant because you have to reboot into the other partition, Parallels is quicker because it can be opened in its own window, and boot very fast. BUT Paralells is a bit quirky in its operation/emulation of WIndows. BC is not at all and runs as you would expect it to on any Intel computer.

    It's a dual band (2.4 + 5 ghz) card
For $7 it is worth it to see if it works. The problem on some newer model laptops is that the only dual band card listed does not actually exist. This one appears to exist.

  • Qosmio X70-A-12X - changing Intel Wi-Fi card from

    Hi ,
I just bought new *Qosmio X70-A-12X*: Catalog number : PSPLTE-0CF062PL
where is factory instaled Wi-Fi card : Intel Wireless-N 7260 , but I want to change the Wi-Fi card from "N" to "AC"
( up to 867 Mbps) I think to choose between this model :
    http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/...oth-brief.html
    or this model :
    http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/...265-brief.html
(the second is newest model) , but I am not sure which card I can safe replace.
I do not know what kind of slot is used in my laptop : HMC ? or M2 (2230) ? M2 (2226 Solder Down) or maybe M2 (1216 - 1.8V / 3.3V) ? I want to instal the best , the fastest , the newest and the most modern Wi-Fi intel card as is possible in my laptop. Please advice me with the best and working on my computer solutions.

    >... but I am not sure which card I can safe replace.
Fact is that such upgrade is not supported by Toshiba and all you do is on your own risk.
At first I must say that such upgrade will cancel valid warranty. Qosmio machines are pretty expensive so I think you should think about that. Maybe you can talk with Toshiba service in your country and ask if they can do this and offer guarantee that you can use valid warranty in the future.
Second, and very important aspect, is that you will not find precise information about such upgrade. With a little bit luck you can find someone who done this successfully and your decision will be based on such non approved user-to-user information.
Try to contact nearest Toshiba service provider in your country and talk with guys about all this.

  • Intel 4500MHD / GM45 on Dell E5400

The latest update to the xf86-video-intel driver makes it possible to render 3d graphics, but it doesn't enable any shaders... it's supposed to be compatible with 4.0
is this an issue with the driver (read: Intel...) or do I have to enable something?

For the longest time I had mplayer looking great (no vsync/tearing issues) by adding this line to my ~/.mplayer/config file:
    vo = "xv:port=104"
or you can try it at the command-line:
    mplayer -vo xv:port=104
Unfortunately, after the  recent Xorg and intel driver updates, I get tearing with both the xv and x11 drivers in mplayer no matter what I try. Using the gl driver seemed to work first, but it can't handle high-def videos (they play really slowly, which was never an issue when I used xv:port=104 before). Also, I've had other videos crash my entire X session while using the gl driver mode. Maybe one of them will work for you though, its worth a shot.
When you say "lagging", what do you mean exactly?

  • 10.5 PPC - Intel migration

    Hi.
What's the best way to migrate a server from PPC hardware to Intel? Is it possible to use a backup of the PPC machine and restore it on the Intel?

What Isaac has said about the OD archive & import is not actually true.
Please see, "3 Migrating from Mac OS X Server v10.4" in Apple migration guide, available here:
    http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/resources/
    namely,
    http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/Upgradingand_Migratingv10.5.pdf
Note that - for example - you can't have an OD replica be differing hardware from the OD master in 10.4 (eg OD Master is Intel, slave is PPC = not supported), and with that in mind even if your 10.5 server would let you, I would not recommend trying to import an OD archive from 10.4
The Apple guide says you must export users & groups & then import them and so passwords will be lost. There are innumerable and important differences between 10.4 & 10.5, regardless of hardware (PPC or Intel) and this is going to be the cleanest way forward anyway.
There is also information about migrating DNS settings on p. 44 but I have not tried this.
It seems the GUI in 10.5 for DNS is not without its problems, see:
    http://www.afp548.com/article.php?story=20071031195155456
However, the service "pull offs" should work for some services - but please read the guide at least as your frame of reference.

  • Why are Intel updates always fat binaries

I don't understand. Why are all the updates for Intel based Macs fat binaries? Is there a reason that they're not Intel only binaries? Possibly Rosetta needs the PPC versions? If not it seems like such a of waste bandwidth and hard drive space.
    Chris

Possibly Rosetta needs the PPC versions?
Just guessing, but that sounds about right. For example, some Safari plugins (e.g. Shockwave) are still PowerPC only - Safari won't pick this up unless it's run in Rosetta mode.

  • Lightroom 6 / CC - Intel HD4400 (and others?) - fix for blue square in Develop module

Just a note for anyone using an Intel HD4400 GPU (or possibly other Intel GPUs) - I've found that I need to Turn Off the Conservative Morphological Anti-Aliasing in the 3D section of the Intel Graphics Control Panel to get rid of the blue square in the Develop module problem.

I'm one of the people who talked about how fast it is. BUT after a few solid hours of using it I'm noticing that the interface is still unbearably laggy. Certain things quicker, gradients for example.  One thing that was unbelievably slow for me today was waiting for it to draw a 1:1 preview - it took a minute from a d800 raw file (and it was doing nothing else). Other times its taking ~15 seonds (twice as long as previously).  In the develop module it takes 4-6 seconds before I can edit an image.
In the meantime my system has gone from a xeon x5650 to an i7 960. I expect things will speed up again when I reinstall the xeon.
