Intel Imac - Dock Issues / Program Start Problem

Ive has my intel based imac for about a year with no issues. I got 1 Virus type of thing a like 8 months ago but that was deleted without issue.
I have a problem where I would click a program in the dock and it would not open.
Anyone have any idea what might be wrong. It eventually started working btu i am concerned as to what the issue is.
thanks.

I have no idea what the actual problem was but I can offer an observation my experience with WIndows switchers. When you launch a Windows program a window is opened that covers the entire desktop, this isn't true of a Mac program. If you close the last open window of a Windows program it quits the program, this also isn't true of a Mac program.
These two facts often cause switchers into confusion. Say you were using Word on the Mac and closed your last document window. Being new to the Mac, you think you have quit the program but you haven't, it is still running. Later, you click on the Word icon on the dock to restart Word - but Word is already running. You don't get a new document window so you think Word didn't restart and something is broken. But what really happened is that Word was forced to become the active application when you clicked on its icon. But that's all clicking on the icon does.
Two of my top pieces of advice to new switchers: A Mac program is quit by selecting the Quit menu or keying Command Q. Closing the last window doesn't quit a Mac program. (With a few poorly programmed exceptions.) And pay attention to the top left corner of the menubar. It tells you what application is active.
This is what I think you experienced, but I could be wrong.

  • Intel imac (white) will not start up, please help.

I have a 20" intel imac (white not silver) running 10.6.4.
I can not get it to boot up on its own, the farthest it gets is to the Silver Apple with spinning gear.
    I have tried:
    1. safe restart - the result is - I get a circle with slash and the a folder with ? and then the silver apple with gear spinning.
    2. booting from disk warrior and running it - the result I get is -"The new directory cannot replace the original directory because of a disk malfunction."
    3. reinstalling the OS from the start up disk, - the result I get is - "The contents of this disk can't be changed."
    4. starting from the OS 10.6 disk and running Disk utilities - the result I get is - "Invalid node structure, The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely. Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk." When I hit repair button I get this result, "Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
All of these methods have failed me. Can anyone please help me? I really need to be able to at least recover some files from the imac. That is my main concern at this point.
    Thanks in advance.

The problem is I can not get my HD to boot up, I can start up with the install disk but disk utilities can not repair the disk. I can not dragNdrop, it wont let me select files. I can not reinstall the OS because it says their is a problem with my drive. It sounds like I'm screwed but my business related info is to important to just give up.
I was able to make a disk image of a folder that had I few files I need and was able to copy that disk image to my external drive. So I may have to do that (tideous but I am willing to do that to recover the data).
Any other thoughts before I take it somewhere?

  • Intel iMac wireless issues

I've had a 20" Intel iMac for over a year now and have never had very good success maintaining a connection to my network wirelessly. I have tried everything, but nothing fixes it permanently. It would just drop the network sporadically, especially if it hadn't been accessed in a day.
My DHCP is set up to lease IP's forever so that's not the problem.
I also have an Intel MacBook that I bought last summer. I've never had problems staying connected to the network with that (though it takes 30-40 seconds to reconnect from hibernation).
The odd thing is that even when the iMac was connected to the network the MacBook could never see it. Couldn't share itunes, couldn't connect to the shared drive, etc. It was almost as though the iMac was invisible to the network. Trust me, I've got no firewall, everything that can be shared is shared, it's as open as it can get (behind my secured router of course). Nothing.
Now, I've added an Apple TV to the mix. I had no problems getting it onto the network and the first time it found iTunes on the iMac and connected, synched, etc. I could stream video from it. All was good. For 1 day.
Then, day 2, nothing, can't find the iMac at all. Just says to make sure iTunes is open. It is, doesn't show the Apple TV in the devices either. I tried switching channels on the router, moving the apple tv around, stopping and restarting everything. Nothing. Wouldn't find it.
I finally got so frustrated (I had gotten the box out to send the apple tv back) that I grabbed a long network cable, plugged it into my router and ran it out the room, down the hall and plugged it into the iMac and disabled the airport card.
I brought up Safari, no problem. Tried iTunes and voila, there was the apple tv. Turned on the apple tv and bingo, there's my library.
I even went to my MacBook and there's the iMac on the network. Brought up iTunes and there's the shared library.
So, suffice it to say, there is a serious problem (and I've seen this posted over and over again) with the Airport cards in combination with the new Intel iMacs that does not seem to impact the Macbooks for some reason, at least not mine.
I guess I will leave it plugged into ethernet and try to hide the cable under the trim or something. I'm frustrated by this whole experience but I'm glad I found a way to get apple tv working.
Both my iMac and Macbook have all the latest software updates.

  • Intel imac G5, Safari and Godaddy problems

I have an intel imac G5 with OS 10.4.5 with Safari 2.0.3 and can not access my GoDaddy hosted website directly or with forwarding (on or off)...
I can however access the GoDaddy hosted website with my imac G5 (non-intel) with the same version Mac OS and Safari and with a Windows computer.
I can only assume this is a problem with my intel imac?
Another weird problem...my site is still on an SBC webhosting.com hosting server and I can only access the SBC hosted site with Safari not the Godaddy site. SBC has not cancelled the account and has not taken the old site down as of yet.
I have tried clearing the cache, Firefox, and pinging the godaddy site ip address.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

very strange...right after I posted, I received an intel mac security upgrade...installed it and the problem was fixed...wow...
    sorry for the post...

  • Intel iMac Noise Issues?

I am considering the new iMac Intel Core Duo. My brother has the original iMac G5 and has always complained about how loud it is with fan noise (and it is loud!). I was curious if the Intel iMac has removed this issue? I've seen them at the Apple Store here in San Francisco, but in the retail environment of that large space there is no way for me to know what it would sound like sitting in my home.
    Thanks for the feedback ...

From all reports it would seem that Apple has corrected whatever caused all the noise in the first gen and ALS model G5 iMacs.

  • Intel iMac with Speedstream 5100 modem - problem with connection

I am running my internet/email using a Speedstream 5100 modem. My service is with SBC Yahoo (dsl line). My modem with stay up for a while and then at some point during the day decide not to work any more. I must turn it off and turn it back on (sometimes 3 or 4 times) to get it to work.
Is anyone else using this modem? Any problems with it? Should I call SBC and ask (or demand) a new modem???
    Thanks!

    rick,
Still having problems with my imac g4.
I called tech support today and I told them about all the problems that I was having. He had me put the current operating system disk that I was currently running on my computer and he had me run the utility file and nothing found.
Then he had me run the operating system disk that came with the computer but my computer froze up and I could not run it. He told me to take it in for service and that it was a hardware problem. After I hung up with the tech the computer started up and I ran the operating system disk and it said no problems with the hardware.
While the computer was still running,I got on the internet to go to the site that you listed above because I wanted to print a copy of the site to take with me tomorrow.
My computer froze up with 18 repeated lines of errors.
I will be taking it in for services tomorrow.
Will let you know what I find out.

  • 4gen Touch docking issues just started

Okay I've been using my 4gen Touch since it came out on a portable Bose dock and a Monster FM transmitter without any issue.  Now suddenly neither will work?  Want gives?

Remember that the % battery is not accurate. Apple does not provide a % batter for the iPod so do not put much faith in the changing %. What yo want to look at is how long the battery lasts after charging to 100%
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Just hear what they have to say.

  • Transfering from G5 to Intel iMac

Hi everyone. My first post here. I have a 20" G5 based iMac I have been using for a bit. I am about to upgrade to 24" Intel iMac. Since I started using OS X, transferring data from one to another has been simple, just attach a firewire cable and good to go.
However, now I am moving over from PPC to Intel, I am faced with either using that method or fresh install to take advantage of as much Intel based software as possible. Main programs I am worried about are MS Office X and Adobe CS3 Premium. I also paid for a bunch of shareware as well. I am fairly certain that when I do the transfer, program does not install the Intel version unless it's Universal. Do some programs tell you to upgrade to Intel version when you run the PPC version? Many questions...
So, what is your recommendation? Fresh install or transfer then individually figure out which ones replace? Thanks much in advance.

Hi, just to let you know, I transferred by saving everything but Apps on an ext HD. Then transfering to my new intel, Apps are best installed from the CD-rom. Shareware Apps, go onto the site and re download, you should have the "key" backed up in your computer.
I used this method for Image Tricks and a bunch of others...In real estate the motto is, Location, Location, Location, with computers it's Back Up, Back Up, Back Up...L

  • Intel iMacs and AirTunes (or possibly iTunes 6.0.3)

Are there any other Intel iMac users who are having problems playing music to remote speakers using iTunes 6.0.3 on 10.4.5?
Everything works fine for about 10 minutes then the music suddenly drops out. No error messages, no attempt to reconnect, nothing. My girlfriend can play music from her PowerBook (using iTunes 6.0.2 on 10.4.4) all day long without a hiccup, despite being further from the base station and usually getting a much weaker signal.
Amusingly I can play my shared iTunes playlists through the PowerBook to the remote speakers without any trouble.
I thought that my network setup might be at fault so I've tried turning off mixed b/g support, changing to WDS rather than having the AE join my existing network, turning on interface robustness, etc all to no effect.
Has anyone else got the same problem?

It looks like this is related to the problems people are having with AirPort networks on the new iMacs.

  • Intel iMac randomly relaunching Finder. RAM problem?

Several months ago I bought a new 3.06 GHz Intel iMac with 2GB of RAM. I also bought CS4 so I maxed out my RAM at 4GB with a 2x2GB RAM kit from Other World Computing.
I've noticed in the lately that everything will suddenly hang, the Dock won't appear when I cursor to the bottom, and then my desktop pic will change. I have my prefs set to choose a random one each day but this isn't happening at the right time, it's random. Not only that but if I open Dashboard after that it has to reload all of my widgets again. Plus any docked Finder or app windows pop back out to the desktop. It's like the Finder is being relaunched or something.
I'm wondering if this could be an issue with bad RAM or not having enough. With email, browser, FTP, time logger, and a few smaller apps going I can never really have more than a couple of the CS4 apps open without things getting sluggish. I try to avoid having more than 2 open at any one time. I've even dropped Photoshop's RAM usage settings from 70% to 60% to see if it makes any difference.
The problem is still happening and it seems to be happening more frequently. Things just relaunched and I went into Mail to minimize an email window. As soon as I clicked the yellow button things hanged again but not in the same way. No windows would minimize, the Dock wouldn't appear and I couldn't switch Spaces. When I went to restart, as soon as my cursor rolled over the Dock item in the Apple menu it stalled there for a short time before I was able to go down to restart. Then the restart sequence stalled and I had to force a shut down.
This is really frustrating as I was expecting a great new machine and software to replace my aging PowerMac G4 and older apps. Is there a way to test for bad RAM or does this sound like a known issue with CS4 or iMacs in general? I don't have the original 2x1GB RAM sticks any more, I sold them after installing my new RAM.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've been trying a few things here and there when I've had time, giving time in between to see if the problem reoccurs. So far I've done the following:
    1. Repaired Permissions. No effect.
    2. Used Onyx to clean the System, User and Font cache options listed by default. It also told me that S.M.A.R.T., startup volume, Permissions and Prefs are all ok. No effect.
    3. I removed the RAM, inspected the boards and the slots. Can't see any sort of damage to either. I replaced the boards but swapped slots. Both boards are firmly seated. Also no effect.
I'm going to try running 1 board at a time, swapping slots if the problem continues. If it does I'll try creating a 2nd admin account and go from there.
I've also noticed at times when the hang happens it seems to be when I click on an item in my Dock (usually a folder of items). There have also been times that after it happens I'll switch to another space and the windows for different apps will have disappeared. The apps are still open but if I try choosing the missing window under View or Window they still won't appear. Same goes with trying to use Show All under the Finder menu.

  • Intel iMac Power / Overheat issue?

    Hi there,
I have an Intel iMac from 2006. About 2 years ago it started to just turn itself off randomly as if there was a power failure. When it does, the only way to power it back up is to switch it off at the plug, switch it back on and press the power button (strangely) twice. I have noticed it seems to be temperature related - when my iMac reaches around 78C (which I'm pretty sure it should be able to handle fine?) it tends to be in the danger zone and at any minute can switch itself off.
I've got around this by using smcFan Control - which thankfully displays the temperature in the menu bar meaning when I hit around 72C I can whack the fans up to full blast to keep the temperature down. Being a sound studio computer - the hum of the fans really isn't ideal, but it at least makes my computer usable. However, I'm currently in the middle of a big project on Logic and I've had to turn my room into a fridge (window open-more clothes on) to be able to work on it as all the processing involved heats it up to 75C+ in no time.
I was hoping someone could shed some light on this or at least tell me if I am right in thinking that 78C is nothing really and the iMac should deal with it easily.
I have seen tons of posts regarding the G5 iMac power problems and similar problems with the intel iMacs - I've done all the hardware resets (PRAM, SMC, PMU) as suggested in these forums but nothing has helped.
I have had the power supply changed in the past (before this problem arose) as one day it just went kaput. Don't know if that makes any difference but I'm pretty sure that the problem started a little while after the replacement was installed.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Performance issue with brand new intel iMac extreme

I am at a loss to explain a problem I've been having and I thought I might put it out to you guys.
In September I purchased a macbook Pro (2.4 ghz, 4 GB RAM) to use in video editing with Final Cut Pro, and for the most part I've been thrilled. I use 1TB LaCie external drives connected via FW800, and perform Multiclip editing with 4-5 video streams at a time and only on occasion have dropped frames during the editing process.
In December I determined that I needed to have an additional system, and thought a 2.8Ghz Intel iMac extreme would be an excellent choice, since for the same price I could get a little more power in the processor, more hard drive space and a bigger screen to work on. When we picked up the new system in the store (The Grove Apple Store in LA), we had them upgrade the memory to 4GB.
Since day one we have had performance issues, including problems playing streaming and DVD video, severe delays mounting and unmounting drives (firewire and USB) and application images, and freezing while doing even simple tasks like printing or checking email. These problems occur even while there are no external drives are connected. I have none of these issues with the Macbook Pro, which has virtually an identical set of programs installed, and both running the same version of Leopard.
I already took the original iMac back to the store, and they exchanged it, but did not have 4GB sets of RAM in stock so they took the RAM from the original machine and put it in the new one. They said if I continued to have problems then it was most likely the RAM and I should come back when they got more in stock. I DID have the same problems with the new machine, and took it back to the Apple Store and they swapped the memory. It seemed to improve the issue, but now I'm seeing the same severe performance issues again.
All tech support can do is tell me to do a PRAM reset, which seems to improve things very temporarily (but that may be my imagination) or have me restart, which at least has the ability to make the printing of documents capable.
What I'm wondering is if it is likely that the RAM is the issue and I just got another bad batch, or if the iMac has some weird glitch that isn't present in the macbook Pro...?? Or could I have possibly gotten 2 bad systems in a row? It's extremely frustrating, and I KNOW it shouldn't be this way! It's so bad I get better performance out of my single-core G5 tower! How do I get a good working system that operates like it should? Am I better off getting another Macbook Pro? I'd rather not for several reasons...
I have xbench on both the MBP and the iMac and can provide test numbers if they'll help, as well as any other info.
Thank you so much for reading my novella of a post and also for any insight you have!
    Best,
    Travis

    Hi!
I got the same problem with my MacBook when it still was new in may 2006. It was supposed to be one of the faster Laptops around but it was soooo slow it drove me nuts. I can only advise to have a look if there is something hugging up your RAM and run some tests using these programs on your machine:
    Xbench:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10081
    MenuMeters:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10451
If they show any unusual results you might have your problem...
As to my problem with the MacBook: I did a complete re-install (writing the harddisk over with zeroes) and suddenly everything was just fine. (But be sure to back all your files before that, I learned this one the hard way.) I know it is just a standard answer, but it worked out for me this time...
Hope this helps in some ways.
    Cheers,
    Rene

  • Intel iMac SuperDrive (Matshita DVD-R UJ-846) DVD Burning Problems

    Hi there:
Having a strange problem burning DVD's now. I have a January '06 intel iMac Core Duo 2ghz, 2GB RAM. My DVD burner suddenly no longer will burn DVD's. When I put in a blank DVD-R, it just spins for a bit then spits it out, no prompt or error message. When I put in a blank DVD+R or DVD-RW, it gives me the usual prompt that a blank DVD has been inserted and asks how to handle it. But when I try to burn, it opens the session, then quickly finishes the session (without any burning) and spits the disc out with an error that burning failed because of an inability to calibrate laser power level for the media. Sometimes it says due to a media error. It also will not read a previously burned DVD data disc, including the OS install DVD that came with the computer. It will however, read and play movie DVD's, and also reads and burns CD-R's with no issues.
I've tried the following fixes with the following results:
    1) Change media. Have tried several different types and different brands. No success.
    2) Burn DVD's from an external firewire DVD burner. Works fine.
    3) Hardware Test via the install DVD (on the external firewire burner). No problems found.
    4) Did a fresh install of the Tiger OS onto an external firewire hard drive, booted from that, and tried to burn. No success.
    5) Tried burning from Disk Utility and Finder. No success.
    6) Put a cleaning CD into the drive and let it run. Still no success after.
System profiler says the drive is ready to burn CDs and DVDs. CDs work, DVDs don't.
Any ideas as to what could be causing this and how to fix?
    Thanks!

If you guys did a search on the optical drives you'll discover that they have a rather extensive
history for failure. the failing optical drive process starts off rather slowly and worsens over time.
You could replace the internal optical drive but rather than performing surgery on your Imac
you would be better off going with an external optical drive.
If your IMac is still under warranty you can have it replace but I would still pick up an external
as well, I have read a couple of threads where even after having the internal replace the same issue
    happened yet again.
I ordered a LaCie that does rather well.
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001P5C9S0/ref=oss_product
I did however discover a couple of minor issues with my LaCie...
    1) When the mounts a disc , for some reason the mechanical ejection button
on the face of the enclosure is disabled. This is not a major issue right click and eject or, drag the
    icon into the trash
    2) if you are wanting to lightscribe be sure to go to the LaCie website and download the latest
lightscribe app, the one that came with mine was out of date and did not work in Mac OSX 10.6
    3) My lightscribed DVD's had a problem , the images where filled with rings from the center of the
disc out, I have discovered this is due to calibration , Amazon has shipped me a new Lacie that
I have sitting in a box next to me, I have not had a chance to test out the new unit yet.
You may also look at OWC's optical drives

Either way make sure that you go with an optical drive with Firewire.

  • Intel Imac Won't Start Up

Hello all, this is my first post here. Any help gratefully received!
My Intel Core Duo Imac (bought march 2006) is having some recurring problems with starting up (and sometimes awaking from sleep). It's a 17" Rev A, 1.83GHZ, 160GB, with an extra 512mb of Ram added by me, running OSX 10.4.8.
It has worked without problems for nearly a year but recently it just wouldn't start up. The power light would come on at the front of the machine, and just stay on with a blank/black screen for as long as I left it, until I force shut it down by holding the power button for 5 seconds.
I can keep going through this process in the hope that it will eventually start ok on its own, but it never does. When I take the ram stick out that I added about 9 months ago it will then start up ok. I can then put the ram back in and it will work ok for another few weeks before going weird again. In System Profiler it says that both Ram sticks are ok. So I'm not sure if it's bad Ram, and removing it makes the system work ok, or if just the act of removing Ram helps to get it going through the start-up process ok.
I have done all firmware updates for Rev.A Intel Imacs. Though I only did the IFE firmware update recently after the problem started in the hope that it would help. Before I did the firmware update and was trying to sort it out it once got a grey screen and made a high pitched electronic sound, as well as not starting up and just getting a black screen
I've also done a complete clean install of the OS, re-formatting the hard disk first. The machine worked fine for about a day after this but then I had to resort to removing the Ram again to get it to start up ok. So at the moment I'm running ok for a couple of days on the original 512mb module
Has anyone else experienced this or similar problems with their Intel Imacs?
Can bad Ram work sometimes and then act up?
    Imac CoreDuo 1.83ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1GB RAM , 160GB. And Powerbook G3 Kanga, Powerbook G3 Lombard.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
My advice would be to contact AppleCare now. As you have only days left on your included AppleCare best to start the ball rolling now.
Cheap RAM can manifest all kinds of issues, so running without it in the meantime may be a way head. What brand/spec is the RAM?

  • Help with re-starting my intel imac after 10.4.6 installation?

    Hey guys,
I am a UK intel imac user and I have a problem. I upgraded to 10.4.6 via software update this morning and everything seemed to be loading OK. On returning to the computer 5 minutes later I discovered an error message saying that update had failed. I then looked at the version tab under 'About this Mac' and it said 10.4.6. I then thought the best thing to do was simply re-boot. I now have a DOS screen with the following:
    Darwin/BSD (JOnathan-Baileys-Computer--2.loc) (Console)
    Login:
I have tried simply re-booting again as well as typing in my user ID and password to no avail? On typing in my user ID etc I get a blue start up screen and then I get the DOS screen again.
    Any suggestions?
Incidently I forgot to remove my Audio Interface from the Firewire connection is this what probably caused the machine to throw a major tantrum?
    Any help would be appreciated

    Hi boxlight,
No, you are not the first to mention the issues you are now experiencing with the 10.4.8 update...
Here's what I would try: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1048comboupdateintel.html - you can run the Combo Update and see if that "fixes" any issues. There have been posts re: using the Combo Update which ended up fixing some software glitches...
You can also go here: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/maintscripts.html#Anchor-Manually-49575 - I use the Terminal method to run the Maintenance Scripts and my Mac runs better than new...
    Good luck, Rick
